Join Us for an evening of bellydance and the music of Pink Floyd

The Gypsy Chicks, in conjunction with Flagstaff Cultural Partners, Troupe Shuvani, Sedona Modern Dance Co.’s Art of Motion and Al Rakasaat, will perform on Sat, Oct. 4 at 8 p.m. at the Coconino Center for the Arts, 2300 N. Ft. Valley Road. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door, and can be purchased through CCA. For more information, call 928- 779-2300 or visit www.culturalpartners.org.

The dance show will feature Floyd tracks taken from a variety of albums, including Dark Side (1973), The Wall (1979), A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987), Meddle (1971), and The Division Bell (1994). The show at CCA will feature two modern dance numbers, in addition to the belly dancing numbers, and is a part of the Night Visions III exhibit featured at the center during the month of October. The exhibit will celebrate Flagstaff’s role in protecting the beauty of the night sky. Night Visions III, organized by the Flagstaff Dark Skies Coalition, consists of galaxy paintings and photography. The exhibit coincides nicely with the dance production, which is appropriately titled “The Dark Side of the Moon.” The production is also in celebration of the 35th anniversary of Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side of the Moon.

Enter another place and time where world fusion bellydance company, NATIUM World Dance, known for Improvisational Tribal and Modern Fusion Bellydance, hosts Bohemian Cabaret Danse de Cirque Bellydancers, Tramps and Freaks.
This showcase of talent takes place August 16th 2008 at The Sets, in Tempe Arizona at 93 East Southern Ave, East of Mill.
As audience members wander in they are greeted with sights, sounds and scents evocative of exotic destinations, worlds away, and of times forgotten. From the lavish decorations of other countries and times in history, to the enticing sounds of worlds coming together under one roof, audiences will feel as though traveling to mysterious, foreign lands or eras long past. Wander through the mini bazaar to barter, haggle and bid on unique objects d’arte from artisans, vagabonds and tramps.
Bohemian Cabaret Danse de Cirque Bellydancers, Tramps and Freaks is brought to you and created by the same brainchild of Phoenix’s successful Romantasy Cababret, Lucy Morals. Her vision this time involves more of the dancing (who doesn’t like dancing girls!?) and brings you a unique showcase of cutting edge performance, bellydance tableaus, and theatrical dance entertainment. A blend of various aspects of vaudeville, historical and theatrical dance and saucy stage revues will bring Phoenix a unique entertainment event of the
summer.
Behold the mysticism of bellydance, the dangers of fire dance, the temptations of burlesque and the art of theatrical dance numbers as groups from around Arizona, Nevada and California come together to entertain you.
Prepare to enjoy 3 hours of entertainment followed by an after-show cast and crew dance party. After the show, we open up the dance floor for all to take part in the after party soiree. Performers from the show come out to dance and mingle with the audience and to do a meet and greet. The showcase becomes a party for all to participate.
This event is for people 21 and over only, as the venue serves liquor. Come hungry too as the menu has tasty treats from appetizers to delicious grilled burgers.

Indigo has won awards for her Gypsy Dance and will be bringing the secrets of Gypsy Dancing to this Workshop! We will work on understanding Romani 9/8, understanding the movements of 9/8 and incorporating Fabulous Skirt Work into 9/8. (We can add zills if wanted). Indigo will help you understand your core control, balancing and spinning which makes those beautiful 16 yard skirts flare out to their full passion.
Indigo has been a popular and sought after performer in the Puget Sound Area for the last 5 years. She is a Multi Award Winning BellyDancer. Her study of movement includes BellyDance, Gypsy Dance, Flamenco, Egyptian Cabaret, Ballet, Yoga, Pilates & Jazz Dance. Indigo fuses all of this knowledge into every performance and class; she is dedicated to helping students develop a Mind-Body Connection. Summit Dub Squad is a band grounded by reggae-influenced dub sounds, as a flux of hip-hop and spoken word are placed in the foreground of its music. This squadron is comprised of a dynamic group of musicians, who bring their own personalities, energies and creativity to the scene.

Belly dancers shake up Flagstaff dance scene

“Hungry, hungry hippo hips”, “bicycle legs” and “the armpit sniff” are just a few of the many moves one may learn while attending Sherry “Crimson” Hammond’s American tribal belly dance class. Sprinkled throughout the lessons are metaphors to help the beginner understand how the move should feel. After a good stretch, Crimson, as she requested to be called, pumps the modest Paul Moore Studios with ancient drumming music infused with new-age influences. The music and the tin ceiling, dimly lit by three small scarf-covered lamps, contributed to the move-your-body atmosphere.

“I am (also) the director and founder of Troupe Shuvani,” Crimson said. “Troupe Shuvani is a middle-eastern, gypsy and American tribal belly dancing troupe here in Flagstaff. We specialize in American tribal dance, which is a fusion of many dance styles in an improvisational format.”

According to Crimson, Flagstaff often gets overlooked as a belly dance community. However, lessons, studios and workshops are becoming increasingly prevalent.
“The belly dance scene has grown considerably in the last few years,” Crimson said. “It takes love, passion, hard work, and the appeal of our beautiful town to bring instructors here.”

Belly dancing is an ancient tradition; in fact, it is the oldest dance form that exists.
“It was developed by women for women to teach life changes, menstruation, sex, child birth and so on,” Crimson said. “It was entertainment and education for women by women. It is the life line of all other dance forms. It shares the same blood.”

In addition to being an ancient tradition, many say belly dancing can have positive psychological effects as well. Hilary Giovale, an NAU alum, did research on tribal style belly dance and body image for her thesis in the Master of Liberal Studies Program.

“There are so many pressures on women to look perfect,” Giovale said. “Tribal Belly dance promotes the feeling that we are each perfect in our own way already. It celebrates women’s real beauty.”

“I have seen belly dance change people’s lives,” Crimson said. “Belly dance can often get a bad rap of being a very erotic or sexually charged performance. I think it can also be overwhelming for some to see women in their most glorious power. The movement often tells a story of various emotion, earth elements, life cycles and spirituality.”

Unlike other forms of dance, there are not many confining limitations deciding who can or cannot partake in this often-moving experience.

“Belly dance differs from other dance forms because there are no limitations on body type or age,” Crimson said. “It is based on a sisterhood of support and encouragement.”
Freshman undeclared major Star Shannon says she has always had an interest in belly dancing.

“I’ve always been curious about it,” Shannon said. “I really like to dance and I was considering taking classes up here (in Flagstaff). What I like is that belly dancing seems really unique. It’s definitely not your everyday kind of dance.”
For many belly dancing is not just a hobby, but a way of life.

“Belly dance is a life style, no matter how little or much you have danced,” Crimson said. “Once you have belly danced I truly believe that it resides in you forever. It is a lifetime study and you can never know or master it all.”

“It is a spiritual practice,” Giovale said. “It creates community. It builds trust among women. It’s joy expressed in physical form.”

NATIUM World Dance & Kahlea will be hosting 2008's Bohemian Nights, a bellydance collection. The showcase will be a monthly or every other monthly showcase of all types of bellydance. Alterna-cirque bellies WELCOME!

Shows will take place at a venue in the Tempe area and will have an oldey timey, circus side-show, exotic feel. Bellydancers of all disciplines are welcome from:

Traditional : Egyptian, Turkish, Orientale, Persian, etc...

World dance: West African, Eastern Euro folk, Flamenco, Zambra, Folklorico

Each Bohemian Nights showcase kicks off with a free mini bellydance lesson to familiarize the audience with this art form and to incite excitement for the dance jam later. Then, Bohemian Nights becomes a two hour-long showcase of dancers, ranging from student performers showing off what they've learned in classes, to semi-professionals desirous of more exposure, to special professional dancer guest stars who will light up the night. Some performers will dance with props such as swords, Chinese fans, fire, veils, skirts and more. After each event, the dance floor opens up for all dancers, whether in the show or in the audience, to get up and take part in an open-floor bellydance soiree, into the night. Performers from the show come out to dance and migle with the audience and to do a meet and greet. The showcase becomes a party for all to participate.

These events are for 21 and over crowds only, as the venue serves liquor. Come hungry too as the menu has tasty treats from appetizers to delicious grilled burgers.

A portion of ticket sales will be donated to a charity or used to benefit a local business selected by NATIUM World Dance, with a different charity or business selected for each show. Raffle tickets sold will also benefit these select organizations, with all proceeds donated to that charity or business. Gratuities and tips are always appreciated, a portion of which may also be donated to the charity or business selected as well.

The *SiStars of the BoomBah* express a new form of Tribal Fusion. Belly
Dance now comes "Unboxed"!

Belly Dance is let out of the box in this workshop, taking traditional
movement and learning how to flow it through the body continuously. We
will drill basic technique and add on an interesting layer of transition
to snake throughout the body. We will do this by taking pieces of moves
and connecting them with other moves to make a whole new dance language.
We will focus on breaking and connecting layers of movement and learn a
short choreography.

About the Instructor:
Mia Donna was born in Ohio and raised on horseback. She spent her young
life rescuing and rehabilitating horses and working with Mustangs
brought into captivity. When she started college in 1999, she was
quickly drawn into the dance program and began studying African and
Modern technique. In 2001, Mia Donna became interested in Belly Dance
and set out for a teacher. She found three and studied intensely
through advanced level technique, teacher training, dance as a holistic
practice and performance etiquette. Through her college studies, she
was able to complete an intensive research project on the origin,
history and development of Belly Dance and create a fitness program in
dance. Today, Mia Donna is an active teacher in traditional cabaret,
tribal, aerobic, and her own style of Belly Dance, Liquid Fusion Break
Beat. She performs with Troupe Gypsy Soul out of Ohio and the
experimental dance project named Star Kids. Now living in Sedona, she
is directing her new Troupe, rightfully named *SiStars of the BoomBah*.
Mia Donna continues her love of dance by continuing to study new forms
of movement expression. Currently, she is studying cardio hip hop and
jazz funk to expand her movement language.

Saturday, March 31st we will be joining Syren Dance company at the AZ Renfaire-thank you Carrie! 11:30, 1:30, 4:30.

Saturday, April 14 Northern AZ Ethnic Arts presents the Flagstaff World Music and Dance Concert at the Orpheum theater in downtown Flagstaff. If you haven't seen our shows or even if you have, this is not to be missed!!!

Saturday & Sunday June 23rd & 24th- Flagstaff Renaissance in the Pines.......
Shows daily at Fort Tuthill in Flagstaff.... Huzzah!

(eastern Indian and Bangladesh), Babu is the son of the renowned Purna das Baul and grandson of Nabani das Baul, one of thegreatest of Baul saints. Babu is the 9th generation
of his family to perform. His collection of songs includes
traditional Bollywood to World Beat, Rock, and Fusion.

Yippee! Troupe Shuvani is proud to host The Durga Tour with Tempest and Ariellah
Thursday, October 19th. Tempest and Ariellah of Gothic Belly Dance will be instructing a two- hour tag team workshop on the heart and soul of Gothic Belly Dance.
The location will be Sapphire Studio (aka Paul Moore Studio) on the North Side of Phoenix Street between Beaver and San Fransisco in Flagstaff. Doors open at 12:30 for registration and shopping. Tempest will be selling her Gothic Goodies. Pre-registration cost is $ 30, day of cost is $ 35. Please be aware that if we receive a large response for pre registration the location may change.
