South Bay Santa Con - December 19th!

Last year our numbers were low, but our spirits were high! We started out in Sunnyvale, disrupting a holiday party or two at Tao Tao, then rode the escalators at Macy’s just like they do in Union Square… Singing our carols while waiting for the train, we got invited to join some revelers in Palo Alto, where Mrs. Claus rode the mechanical bull (and I’ve got pictures to prove it!). After another cup of cheer we took the train back to Mountain View for another dive bar romp, and ended up back in Sunnyvale.

This year’s route is being planned, and if you want to hear about the super-secret details be sure to RSVP to southbay@burningman.com

Volunteers needed for TRUE GRIT - Monterey Burners 4th Annual Day-at-the-Beach

Hello Everyone!

We are in process of putting the 4th annual m-pyre/monterey burners day-at-the-beach event together, and could use your help!

What it is:

Our 4th annual Day-at-the-Beach event - this is a community event, held on Del Monte Beach in Monterey, California. From 10a-10p we will have music, dancing, art, fire, fun, sharing, community, costumes and whatever you want to enjoy! This is a participation event, if you want to see it there, bring it! If you have questions, please feel free to email monterey@burningman.com to see if your art installation, art car, or theme camp would be a good fit.

These events are not free to throw, so to cover the cost of permits, insurance and to allow us to have future events, we are suggesting a donation of 10$ per person (you can pay via our website www.mpyreburn.com or at the event).

We have permits for full fire - this means if you like to spin fire or have fire toys you want to play with, please bring them! We also have room and permits for two burn barrels.

**For the junglebus that contacted me - please contact me again, your email was lost in a big mess of emails and I apologize for not getting back to you, PLEASE email me again**

Would you like to volunteer:

Right now, we could use some help. If you would like to volunteer we have the following opportunities open:

Fire Wrangler: this would oversee anything on fire - burn barrels, fire toys, fire safety, etc. if you would like to do part of this task, or want to do it with a friend, let me know! We have permits for two burn barrels, if someone would like to donate their barrel(s) for use. Also, we have permits for full fire toy play on the beach, and we need to ahve someone oversee this and make sure we have a safety station. Also, we have an effigy coming (thank you Root!) and will be burning this in a barrel as well!

Sand Artisan: this would be anyone that would like to head up a sand art/castles event

DJ Booth/Altar Decorator: let us know if you are interested. Ian did an incredible job last year, and has now thrown the guantlet for all mpyre dj booths! step up and take the challenge!

Greeters/Greeter Lead: Would you like to greet!? lead the greeters? set up the greeters booth? let us know - greeting is fun, essential and is the face of mpyre! let the community know what we are about and welcome them in. Its a great time and a lot of fun.

Rangers: We still could use some more Rangers for this event, and someone to step up as the lead ranger, please let us know if you are interested.

Green Beans: This is just a matter of keeping an eye on the recycling bins and trash during a designated time during the event. Mike & Nikki have been incredibly gracious to volunteer to do lead this up for us, and they could use some volunteers. If you would be interested in keeping an eye on recycling or helping out with that, it would be greatly appreciated!

If you have any interest in volunteering, or helping out. Please contact monterey@burningman.com and let us know!

Thanks in advance for your help and looking forward to seeing you there!

Register now! The www.southbayburners.org website is currently under construction, but it IS LIVE, and you can find out all the information about SoulFire, our camping decompression, at www.southbayburners.org/events.html . You can choose to arrive as early as 9am on Saturday, November 7th and stay through 6pm on Sunday, November 8th.

Fire permits have been obtained for burn barrels and ceremonial fire, so don’t worry about being cold … you can circle around the fire with your furry wardrobe and new playa honey to keep warm!

Art grants will be available for art installations and (stationary) art cars. If you want to bring sound or theme camps, or host an activity, send an email to southbay@burningman.com for placement. And yes, we’ll need greeters and rangers and LNT mavens, too, so volunteer to bring your finely honed playa talents to Lupin for decom!

Want to help out with re-creating one of the central features of this year’s Burning Man? The Culture Labs will be at the San Francisco Decompression, complete with petri dish and giant microscope! It’s a place to gather and find out more about the Regionals, Black Rock Arts Foundation, Burners Without Borders, and Black Rock Solar.

We’re looking for 2 20x10 carports, or similar shade structures, to help create the vibe. If you have some shade (the dustier, the better!) shoot an email to realgirl@southbayburners.org to work out the details. Thanks!

the HOTD tribe is not a related tribe. Did anyone have fun this year at Burning Man?

Burning man tickets *maybe* for sale....

I may need to be selling my two tickets to burning man this year (such is the life of a business founder these days :( I won't know for a two or three more days, but I wanted to get the word in case any one was interested. I think they still not selling tickets at the gate this year, so no prebought ticket, no entrance...

Anyway, I'll do $200 a ticket, or possibly less if you can convince me that you the tickets will mean something exceptional to you, and that you will use your time on the playa to make friends and connect to your self, your new friends and the universe....

Ping me if you are interested...

HELP! Need a ride share to the Playa...

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for a ride to the Black Rock Desert. I have a few bags and cash to put on the travel expenses. I'm an average size guy (a couple inches taller than Tom Cruise, ha) so, I don't take up a lot of space. I've entertained the idea of taking my own car however, that old & grumpy puppy would not survive the trip.

Thanks,
Alex

Ride or Rider Needed from Anywhere in SF Bay Area

I'm going to Burning Man after all. Yay!

However--will be needing to keep costs down. Looking either to ride with someone or find a rider.

I don't have a lot of stuff. Tent, cooler, chair, clothing bin or two. I'll be with a theme camp so I can travel a little lighter. I'd be more than happy to pay half your gas and share driving responsibilities. I'm not crazy or obnoxious. ;>)

If I can't find a ride, I'll be driving my s-10 pickup, which means I'll have room for one other person and their gear. Should only take a tank of gas each way, with is about $50 for my truck. So you'd only have to pay $50.

I'm pretty flexible on departure. I don't have early entry, so I'd like to get there late Monday morning--but really anytime Monday, even 12:01am is fine! Or I'll sit in line with you if you want to show up late Saturday night.

I need to be at work on Tuesday morning (new job) so I'd like to leave late Sunday (after the Temple burn perhaps? During??) or crack of dawn Monday.

Which ever works out first--to get a rider or to get a ride--will be the one I go with.

Drop me a PM and let's talk.

South Bay Burners Meet & Greet Picnic - Aug 1st, Baylands Park

Still haven’t decided where you’re camping yet? Would you like to meet other South Bay Burners and make plans to meet up on the playa? Although we’ve had tons of fun at Soulstance and on our Dive Bar Spelunking meet & greets this year, maybe it’s time for a family-friendly day. Bring the kids, bring the SO who isn't so sure about Burning Man yet, bring the neighbors and co-workers and friends who have been hearing all your playa stories!

Baylands Park, on the north end of Sunnyvale/San Jose (http://tinyurl.com/6el66), offers spectacular views of the South Bay, a great discovery play area, a huge meadow for hooping/practice poi spinning, or model airplane and kite flying, or a “fastest to erect a tent” contest, or a “capture the flag” game, or anything else we want to do! We’ll be meeting at the Owl Burrow #1 picnic area with 8 big picnic tables, a massive BBQ grill, and room for at least 65 people (bring your own comfy chair if you’re so inclined). Our reservation is from 9am-8pm, so we’ll light the BBQ grills at noon and play until it gets dark!

NOTE: Baylands charges a $5.00 per car entry fee, but there is plenty of free parking directly across Caribbean Drive if you would prefer to walk in.

Pot luck-y radical self-reliance encouraged … please post to our discussion group at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SouthbayBurners/ if you’re able to bring charcoal, hot dogs, potato salad, ice, etc. If we all bring enough for just one more person there will be plenty to go around! … and, please help us Leave No Trace, too!

A few of us got together last Tuesday at the Boardwalk for their 75 cent night and had a blast! We thought it would be fun to do get a group of us together EVERY week, on Monday, to ride the cheap rides and create general mayhem at the Boardwalk : )

We'll start meeting weekly for the summer this Monday at a designated place (TBD) and time (TBD).

I'll have more info on Monday but I hope to see some of you there!

Soulstance is a 2-day, 3-night official Burning Man Regional Event, and this will be the third year in a row that we’ve celebrated a burning solstice at Lupin Lodge in Los Gatos. If you didn’t make it last year, ask around … it was spectacular (300+ attendees, music and workshops all day and night, art cars and costumes and camping, oh my!) This year, we’re hoping to make it bigger and better than ever, but it can’t happen without YOU!

Gear up for the playa, do some practice CAMPING (shake the dust out of your tent, test your air mattress, see how warm your playa coat really is!), PARTICIPATE in the creation of a playa-rific experience for everyone who attends. Want to DJ? Practice your poi? Have a new ART project or EL WIRE creation you’d like to show off? Come to give to your community and BE DELIGHTED by your fellow participants!

You can now register on the website, www.soulstanceinfo.com, and chat with fellow burners about the event at http://tribes.tribe.net/soulstance. Pre-registration is $15, and helps the regions cover our costs for insurance, paypal, websites and such. Camping fees due to Lupin will be the same as last year, but the first 100 people to pre-pay their camping fees will get a reduced rate. See www.soulstanceinfo.com for more details!

Call for artists - Los Gatos

You might have noticed that there is already a lovely outdoor sculpture or two on the Lupin grounds, and a rotating exhibit of art and photographs in the restaurant. What you might not know is that Lori Kay, owner of Lupin, is a world-renowned sculpture artist who has had several major exhibitions in San Francisco, San Jose, and throughout the Bay Area. She's also been a long-time participant in the Hunters Point Shipyard and has numerous accolades for her large-scale sculptures placed in corporate, civic and gallery environments (see www.lorikay.com). Her creations are whimsical and structural, integrating elements of welding, recycled pieces, plasma cutting, and mixed media.

Now, Lupin has invited all of us to participate in the evolution of its new sculpture garden. Mardi Storm, whose fantastic piece "Hippocampus" has graced the main lobby at Burning Man Headquarters, will be installing "Twilight Anima Rising" at Lupin. This artwork first made an appearance at Burning Man 2005. Also, Bob "Wizzard" Marzewski, whose large-themed art is known to many South Bay Burners, will be installing "Intelligent Design" at Lupin, which he built for the Burning Man 2006 theme "Hope and Fear: The Future". Overall, there are 19 pieces currently slated for placement on the grounds, including a "sculpture walk" which is going to be a fundamental part of the new art & nature programming rolling out this year.

With Mardi and Wizzard seeding the new sculpture garden with some burner art, we wonder what else burners can grow there. The owners of Lupin are inviting all of us to install large-scale art (either an on-loan or permanent basis) to help enrich the flavor of Lupin. Do you have a favorite art project that came back from the playa a little dusty, and you can't figure out where to store it? Is it taking up too much of your backyard (which may be great for parties, but you *would* like to be able to sit out there, too, right?) Do you want to display it for the burner crew at Soulstance 2009, and let the rest of Lupin members and visitors enjoy it too? We have a great opportunity to contribute to the creation of a new art space right in our own back yard. (Lupin has over 110 acres to share with us!) If you'd like to list your art for sale, exposure to the Lupin community is a great way to gain an appreciative audience.

If you're interested, please contact lori@lorikay.com to discuss timing and placement.

BURNING MAN LIVE (Piss Clear Mag)

Hey Fellow Burners,

Do you all know about Piss Clear, the Burner magazine, that was around for 13 years? It’s been called “the Vice Magazine of the playa” – sharp and funny with an alternative view of Black Rock City. I found out that RE/Search Publications has published BURNING MAN LIVE, which has the best of all 13 years (1994-2007), including “Best of Black Rock City,” “Sex and Drugs,” “Playa Fashion Do’s and Don’ts,” “You Know You’re a Burner When…” “Borg Wars,” interviews with Larry Harvey (Burning Man cofounder) and Harley DuBois (Director of Community Services), and introductions by Brian Doherty, Adrian Roberts, and Malderor. This book is 320 pages, and HUGE (8.5 by 11 inches) of pure Burning Man history– highly recommended – with really great articles and photos.

Just go to the link below to check out the book or make an order:

http://www.researchpubs.com

Anyway, it's an amazing book and I suggest you all check it out, if interested.

NOTE: I found this message from another BM I'm a part of. I ordered the book -- loved it, talked to the woman who is spreading the word -- and now I'm spreading the word, too. This reminds me of the old BM days, as well as the more recent. It's great fun!
8-10pm
10-12am

What's better than getting that first initial drop of Burner love from the excited masses joining the camp?! Nada. So grab a friend or meet a new friend and sign up.

Be there or be square dancing.

The Alameda "My Bloody Valentine" Pub Crawl is this coming Friday the 13th to Park Street in Alameda! This takes the place of the usual East Bay Burners First Friday get together. We'll be starting out at La Pinata 3 at 1440 Park St., Alameda at 7pm. From there we'll make our way to several local establishments, including the Lucky 13. It's winter time and Cupid needs a drink!

This event is RAIN OR SHINE--bring your umbrellas and el-wired golashes!

Come early and have dinner at La Pinata first if you care to. Here's their website:

www.lapinata.com/

I would recommend you not try to park directly on Park St. but park in the parking structure next to the cinema on Santa Clara Ave (It's FREE after 5pm) The restaurant is less than half a block away. You can BART if you don't want to drive. Go to the Fruitvale Station and either take a cab or take the #50 bus down Park.

Dress in your cupid, valentine, Friday the 13th, gothic or playa wear and be prepared for a fun evening!

Let me know if you think you may need crash space.

President B.H.Obama needs to check RED DWARF, Season 7 Episode 5, and SING ALONG:

FED DWARF needs to review Season 7, Episode 5, of RED DWARF, and get back to us.

Only a complete RIMMER would front for energy inflation during wars, for an illegal 1882 Zionist invasion of Palestine, which has incited WWI and WWII, and it is headed for WWIII.

So naturally, President Barack H. Obama is going for the golden "H" on his forehead, like young Rimmer earned, when he caused an O-boom-boom on the mining ship, known among BBC folk as the RED DWARF.

Naturally, Israel is neither pure nor natural, and never kosher. Jews are from Ethiopia, see Isaiah 20:5. The star is from Egypt. The language Hebrew is from 'Habiru,' the language of the slaves. Rahm's tainted name is from Ra-moses, or 'son of the sun.'

So what are my and Chelsea's and Chuy's F-15s and F-16s and jet-X and phosphorous doing bombing Gaza, for illegal Israel, of the same 1882 invasion, which incited WWI and WWII, so young Obama gals go to private school, protected expensively, to fail to learn how their fees since 2001 are illegally inflated, with the costs of wars, illegally waged?

Obama invited the $100,000 toolbag to float away, with hundreds of offices and measures, through his deliberate mismanagement of all Democratic media, related to energy reform, BEFORE BAILOUTS OR STIMULI ARE PROPOSED. Yet these are to be enacted, in fraud.

Mr. Blagojevich can bring down the Obama White House, as soon as he sues for even enforcement of the law, including under Title II ADA or 42 U.S.C. 1983.

High crimes may constitute inciting riot in Pakistan, including the Black Friday massacre, inciting riot in Gaza, when the Palestinians shot rockets, concurrent with the Obama-ordered Blago-chase by the US Senate and the Illinois Legislature, and then cops shot a 22 or 23-year-old black man, per day, after Roland Burris called Blagojevich 'reprehensible,' without a hearing. What a price to pay, already!

Misdemeanors include the Mann Act, aggravated in California by CPC 404 infractions, including incitement of riot and failure to disperse, by evading review, with both Burris players, Senator Roland and despicable John at misconduct, leading to death and immininent further injuries, to classes for discovery.

A Rimmer would get his own stupid mining ship blown up by a radiation leak, Mr. President Rim-shot. Don't go there, and then enjoy sunny California. We have an Arnold Hole, already.

Somebody's DADDY is a President Rimshot, who needs to review Red Dwarf basics, and then see Soundgarden tapes, of BLACK HOLE SUN. But this Rimmer side is a heckuva hit:

-------------------------------------------------------
If you're in trouble, he will save the day
He's brave and he's fearless, come what may
Without him, the mission would go astray
He's Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer

Without him, life would be much grimmer
He's handsome, trim, and no one's slimmer
He will never need a Zimmer
He's Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer

More reliable than a garden Strimmer
He's never been mistaken for Yul Brynner
He's not bald and his head doesn't glimmer

Master of the wit and the repartee
His command of space directives is uncanny
How come he's such a genius? Don't ask me
Ask Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer

He's also a fantastic swimmer
And if you play your cards right, then he just might come round for dinner

He's Arnold, Arnold, Arnold Rimmer
No rhymes left now apart from quimmer
He'd better fade us out before we get to schlimmer
Fade out you stupid plimmer

Party Tonight at Urban Art Farm???

So I was looking for some info on the party at Urban Art Farm tonight (17th and Connecticut in S.F., space ran by Black Rock City Ballet)

Mostly, who's having it, theme (I think it's a solstice but not sure), cover charge, who's spinning, etc...

Anyone know that stuff. I know someone who lives in the space and oddly he has no clue, which is kinda funny! And I can't seem to find anyone who knows anything about it!

Can you help a gal out???

Mike Aquino, a/k/a Skid, one of the original founders of the southbay region and K-SVERT radio on the playa, has been quite ill with his diabetes and is in need of a kidney transplant. He is recently unemployed and without company-paid medical coverage now, and needs to maintain his medical coverage through COBRA (which can get quite pricey). His friends are holding a benefit for him … Sacramento Dave from K-SVERT writes:

Monday, December 29, 2008, a benefit concert will be held @ Britannia Arms, Almaden. (5027 Almaden Expressway, San Jose, CA 95118) to assist Skid with his medical expenses. He is currently unemployed, and his COBRA payments are over $400 per month.

The confirmed line up for the event is: '3 Dicks and a Jane' & 'Magic Wanda'. We will ask a $10 donation @ the door. The owner of the club has donated $500 up front, and with your help we can continue Skid's COBRA payments, so he can continue to receive the medical attention his so urgently needs.

SassyJill & PlayaMonkey have set up a 'Mike Aquino COBRA' fund (The MAC Fund) to collect other donations, For PayPal: Send money to; Mikeapalooza@gmail.com as Services/Other. To pay with a check: Make check payable to TOM SHERRY and mail your donation to:

Join local activists this Saturday in a peaceful demonstration to show KFC that abusing chickens doesn't fly.
Where: KFC, 250 N. Bascom Ave., San Jose

Southbay Santa Con - Dec 12th

Thanks to the lovely Esperanza for stepping up and offering to plan a Santa Con for the Southbay!

WHEN: Friday, December 12th starting at 7pm

WHERE: Meet up at Tao Tao in Sunnyvale, 175 S Murphy Street

WHAT: Santa Crawl up and down the peninsula, with a super-secret list of destinations to be visited. If you can’t meet up at Tao Tao, be advised that the “schedule” is open to liberal interpretation by Santa. There is no Santa to call the day of. Ask your friends if they are going, and keep in touch by cell phone to hear where the next destination is.

WHY: Because if you start out in the Southbay on Friday, you can crawl all the way up to the San Francisco Santa Con on Saturday

HOW MANY: Could be 4 or 40 Santas, that’s up to you now, isn’t it?

WEAR: Holiday apparel is mandatory!A Santa hat is not enough. Buy a Santa suit. Make a Santa suit. Paint on a Santa suit. Steal a Santa suit.
No money? Be creative! Glue cotton balls to red long johns. Make it purple. Make it pink. Already have a Santa suit? Make a spare so Santa can assimilate strangers. Don’t forget layers for being inside and outside, and most importantly GOOD WALKING SHOES.

BRING: Money for drinks, a water bottle (to pace yourself!), snacks if you don’t want to buy appetizers, toys/candy canes/holiday cheer to share with everyone we encounter. Be prepared to buy a $10 CalTrain pass between Sunnyvale & Redwood City (we’ll also stop at places in-between!)

REMEMBER: Memorize the answers to questions that may arise:

Who's in charge? "Santa"
What organization are you with? "Santa"
What are you protesting? "Shitty holiday parties"
How did you get here? "A sleigh and eight tiny reindeer"
Where are you going next? "Put on this hat, buy me a drink, then I'll tell" or “I'm just following Santa”

The "4 F**ks" of SantaCon
Don't *** with children.
Don't *** with cops.
Don't *** with security.
Don't *** with Santa.

More general guidelines at http://www.santacon.com/

Hey, Burners:

The snow is already flying up in Tahoe -- are your legs getting itchy for some pow-pow? Mine sure are! Put these dates on your calendars for a ski weekend up in Tahoe with our hosts, the Apres Ski Club in Kings Beach:

Friday, February 20 - Sunday, February 22, 2009.

By popular request, we're NOT doing it on a holiday/long weekend this year so as to avoid the long ski lines, but set-up helpers are cordially invited to come up a day or so early with me (additional bunk fees will apply but we can feed you for free). And, as usual, this will be an event that is open to both ski club members and Burners, and since the Apres Lodge only sleeps 30, you must sign up early to guarantee yourself a spot.

Sign-ups will begin on January 20th. I will send out subsequent notes with information about how much and how to pay. Per Apres Ski Club rules, I cannot accept money before that date.

The Apres Ski Club Lodge is in Kings Beach, CA, on the northern-most tip of Lake Tahoe, and is conveniently situated so as to be a short drive from North Shore ski resorts (Northstar, Diamond Peak, Mt. Rose, Alpine Meadow, Squaw Valley), 40 minutes from Sugarbowl and about an hour from Heavenly. The Lodge sleeps 30 in narrow, squeaky bunk beds and single beds. There are 4 rooms with 2 single beds each which can be pushed together -- these are laughingly called "Deluxe" rooms. The beds in these rooms are $5/night more than regular bunks, and are allocated on a first paid/first served basis. See later communications about the deluxe rooms and the sign up process for these.

The Lodge has an outdoor hottub that fits 8 -- it is working right now, and it should be working for our weekend (I apologize for last year's lack of a hot tub). The lodge has a fully equipped kitchen with 3.5 refridgerator/ freezers, 2 stoves, microwave, coffee maker, etc. It also has 2 full baths, 2 half baths and 2 showers. A single price, to be posted later, gets you your bed and all meals for the weekend -- Friday dinner thru Sunday lunch. Dinners and breakfasts are family style and lunches are self-packed bag lunches. Everyone contributes to the weekend by signing up for chores (no exceptions), everything from cooking to cleaning to fire-duty, and you are encouraged to sign up for these on-line before the event.

This is a really yummy, fun event, even with the rustic accomodations. In years past we've had thumpy music day and night -- fun! Let's do it again! If people want to schlep some sound equipment up, we can achieve maximum thumpiness. I'll put out the call for that stuff, as well as blacklights and other fun decorations, as we get closer.

On Saturday night, our tradition is to have a Burner Casino Hop, complete with wild fur coats and hats, stunned casino patrons, etc. -- we were invited by the casinos last year to let them know we're coming before hand so they can show us a REALLY good time so I'm on that one. Check.

OK, that's it for now. Start hunting thru your garages for your ski/board equipment and gear. Get your edges sharpened and your bottoms waxed (ooh, that sounds sexy!) and stay tuned for more details to come.

Burn on!

Dec 6th, 12noon - 10pm
Monterey State Beach, Del Monte Avenue, Monterey, CA
Across the street from the Dennis the Menace Park and McDonald's and next to Monterey Bay Kayaks.

Once again our community is coming together to play by the ocean...playa style. So get dressed up in your best playa wear, bring your art, bring some food to share, bring some friends, just bring it!

We'll be enjoying a full day at Del Monte Beach in Monterey from 12noon until 10pm on December 6th. There will be music all day (live and DJ), art, fire, fire dancing, and so much more. What more? Well that's up to you.

This is a family friendly event, so bring the kids, bring your grandma, you can even bring your dog as long as you keep them on a leash (all of the above should be leashed, Grandma goes nuts at these things).

We're asking for a $10 donation per person to m-pyre to help cover the costs of permits, insurance, and help fund upcoming events such as SoulStance on June 19-21, 2009.

That's right.. we're on fire. We almost have all the volunteer shifts filled. I knew there's a reason I belong to the MPYRE.

Here's what the schedule looks like:

12-2: Joe
2-4: Team Gibson
4-6: Chris and Dan
6-8: Blysse
8-10: D$

For the shifts with one person.. don't let them go lonely, make a friend! This is the easiest way to meet people and make friends. Literally. They come to you. You don't even need to go to them. It doesn't get any easier than that.

Much love,
Firecracker!

P.S. If you dont' know me.. I'm then one drinking alcohol from a boot.

3rd Annual Seabright Halloween Parade and Freak Fest -- and last boats and beats party of the season!

Start your Halloween weekend early this year with us on Wed., Oct. 29!

Where, you ask? In Seabright (on the cliffs overlooking Seabirght beach) -- East Cliff between 3rd and 4th Aves., Santa Cruz

Come join us for the 3rd annual Seabright Halloween Parade and Freak Fest! Like last year, we're kicking it off with the last boats and beats party of the season.

We have no idea how many people we can rally to join me and Frank for this event so, that means we need YOU to help us!

All you need to do is show up in your freakiest, most fun Halloween wear (layers are good for warmth), put on some blinky lights and stuff, bring some things to give away (candy, blinkies, fuzzy hats, treats of any kind, the choice is yours!) and drinks (and cups to conceal them in!) and prepare to march a few blocks. Come on, you can do it!

At around 5:30, we will meet on East Cliff between 3rd and 4th Aves. above Seabright beach for the LAST BOATS AND BEATS PARTY of the season! DJs will entertain us and please bring drinks to share (and a cup to put them in!)

From there we'll start the parade up 3rd Ave. We'll parade our bad-ass selves up 3rd Ave. and around the 'hood and will probably end back up at Brady's (what a surprise!). If you get down there and can't find us, call me at 831/419.2837 or Frank at 831/325.3255.

Along the way, and here's the kicker, we'll GIFT people things (again, candy or whatever) along the way! People answering their doors, people checking us out, you get the idea!

We want to see how many people we can get to do a renegae parade! And the fun part will be tripping people out when we try to give them something (rather than the other way around). Fuckin'YAY!

Join us, fellow Freaks, won't you? Let's fly our freak flags high and make this a freaktastic night!

You can find the Tribe invite for this here: http://sanfrancisco.tribe.net/event/3rd-Annual-Seabright-Halloween-Parade-and-Freak-Fest-and-last-boats-and-beats-party-of-the-season/santa-cruz-ca-95062/42d87a33-0d5b-4d3f-8ce5-5092d49b458d

Reminder: We’ve got a reservation for Friday, Oct 24th at 7pm at the Tied House in San Jose, 65 North San Pedro Street (http://www.tiedhouse.com/sanjose/) There have been no RSVPs yet, so this event may be cancelled unless *you* want to participate! Please RSVP by posting at southbayburners@yahoogroups.com, and check there on Friday to see if there has been any chatter before heading down to the Tied House.

Show up in your favorite costume (burner or spooky), and bring something for the Playa Clothing Exchange. Bring your photos of BM 2008 too, and share them with your neighborhood burners. If enough of us are there to take over the bar, they threaten to move us to the private back patio (cool!). Afterwards, we can take to the streets in a burner pub crawl. Get ready to show off your fuzzy best!

OAKLAND, CA –

In celebration of the creative expression and highly evolved concept of Burning Man, Free Run Pictures, is screening their documentary, “Burning Man: Voyage in Utopia” an immersion into a journey towards a new world, at the the Grand Lake Theatre located at 3200 Grand Ave Oakland, California on Thursday October 23 at 8 Pm.

Synopsis:
Every year, tens of thousands of participants migrate to the vacant heart of the Wild West, The Black Rock desert in Nevada to celebrate Burning Man. Without a doubt the experience is extreme in this lost world of huge heat, desert storms, no shade, and no shops. Everybody must survive by themselves by bringing their own food and hopefully their good spirit. These “burners” mix their urban culture with a certain type of improvised tribalism. According to Larry Harvey, the principals are simple. Radical self expression and creation are absolute. No money here. All is based on a gift economy!
Voyage in Utopia by the Black Rock Foundation.

http://blackrockarts.blogspot.com/2008/07/voyage-in-utopia-this-friday-at-castro.html

The purpose of this documentary, through an extraordinary voyage, is to analyze the conventions, commitments and syndromes of this event and how it became a movement. Carnaval, tribe or mystic retreat ? This big uproar for some will stay as a spiritual experience for the others. The film depicts the journey of artist David Best through the building of the “temple.” David Best dedicates this interactive artwork to the departed love ones and to the miracle of life. He’s offering his own creativity to the community. A clever anachronism, a miraculous idea and an exemplary symbol. The citizens of Black Rock City take ownership of it and write messages to their families, their friends, their departed love ones. The temple is full of tributes and becomes a sanctuary.
The frenzy turns into meditation in that lost desert where the world is reborn each year from its own ashes ...

“Voyage in Utopia” is a remarkable piece of storytelling. It does what our event is said to do. It evokes the inexpressible, it invites imagination to inhabit the unknown,” says Larry Harvey, founder of Burning Man.
Filmmakers/producers, Laurent Le Gall, Sandrine Di Rienzo and Gregory Martoglio, team-up to capture the true essence of Burning Man, a schizophrenic testimony of an American society where liberty, tolerance and individualism often live side by side with competition, totalitarianism and consumerism. Just as impressive, the original musical score composed by French recording artist, Nelly Mella, blends a marvelous melody of vocal chants and captivating rhythms.

Billed as one of the best films about Burning Man ever seen, “Voyage in Utopia,” is sure to inspire a society of cultural rebels and grab the hearts and souls of viewers worldwide.

Three Clips of the film
Documentary 85 minutes.

Carnival, tribe or mystic retreat ?

So we don’t have to call it a decompression, or even decom-ish. Let’s just call it a backyard playa reunion! Whether your tent is still dusty or not, maybe you just miss sleeping under the stars. Maybe you miss dancing all night, or didn’t get to wear all the costumes your brought. Maybe you just need to be around burners because your co-workers and family are starting to get tired of hearing about the amazing experience you had at dawn on Thursday, and the ideas you have already for next year’s art project. Come share it all with your community!

Right now we’re looking for a sound wrangler (equipment and/or DJs). Bring your theme camp, art project and favorite new playa stories to share over 3 days/2 nights at Lupin. If you want to be placed in a specific area, drop me an email and I’ll help to coordinate where the music and art goes.
ON-PLAYA - REGIONAL NETWORK CENTER and EVERYWHERE LANE

REGIONAL NETWORK CENTER and EVERYWHERE LANE

The Regional Network Center is a place to come and meet your friendly neighborhood regional contacts on-playa. This year, RealGirl from the Southbay and Jennie Kay from Monterey will co-host a Bingo Margarita party on Tuesday, August 26th from 2-4 pm.

Also, the Regional Network is joining forces with the other Outreach groups (BRAF, Burners Without Borders, and Black Rock Solar) to create something we are calling Everywhere Lane. All four Outreach groups will have their own shade and spot along a pictureque country lane in Anywhere America on the Esplanade at Center Camp.

We've been plotting and scheming to create an enticing and fun atmosphere to draw in participants and share all that is going on in the Burning world. Do stop by!

Synopsis

Carnival, tribe or mystic retreat? This big uproar for some will stay as a spiritual experience for the others. The film depicts the journey of artist David Best through the building of the “temple.” David Best dedicates this interactive artwork to the departed love ones and to the miracle of life. He’s offering his own creativity to the community. A clever anachronism, a miraculous idea and an exemplary symbol. The citizens of Black Rock City take ownership of it and write messages to their families, their friends, their departed love ones. The temple is full of tributes and becomes a sanctuary. The frenzy turns into meditation in that lost desert where the world is reborn each year from its own ashes. The original music score is as impressive as the cinematography.

This is what they're saying about the film:
“Voyage in Utopia is a remarkable piece of story telling. It does what our event is said to do: it evokes the inexpressible, it invites imagination to inhabit the unknown”.
Larry Harvey, founder of Burning Man

“Lovely interpretation of who we are!”
Artist David Best, temple builder

“ I watched your film last night and was very moved. The cinematography is superb and the editing very intelligent. You really capture the feeling of being on the playa, the emotional drama, and what we're really all about in terms of the community and our principles. Bravo! ”
Christine Kristen aka LadyBee, Art Curator of Burning Man

“One of the best films about Burning Man I’ve ever seen!”
Andie Grace aka Actiongrl, Communications Manager of Burning Man

"Forget John Ford or better yet Sergio Leone, Laurent Le Gall's “Voyage in Utopia” captures le coeur of the real Wild West: The Good, The Bad and The Otherworldly in the Black Rock Desert. Giddy-up!"
Jane Sullivan Director, Santa Cruz Film Festival
If you would like to be invited to the Lupin Burners tribe, let me know and I'll get an invite out to you right away!

There we talk about the goings on of the regular monthly Lupin parties.

Here's what Real Girl posted on her Silicon Valley Burners email list:

NEXT BURNER WEEKEND AT LUPIN

We’ve got the weekend of August 1-3 on the calendar as a “burner weekend”. If you fell in love with Lupin at Soulstance, come play with a smaller crowd in August. Or maybe it won’t be a smaller crowd ---- it’s going to be what *you* want to make it! Bring your theme camp, bring your sound, your costumes, your tent, your bacon …. it’s practice camping for the playa!

See you there!

The Art of Freedom @ Burning Man

Call for Papers and Presentations:

THE ART OF FREEDOM
An Interdisciplinary Arts Conference

August 28, 2008
Black Rock City, Nevada

How can we recognize, articulate, and navigate the politics of art and freedom? What are the roles of our communities, cultures, and societies in enabling or restricting arts and freedoms? What freedoms are needed to enable artistic expression? What limitations do we struggle against to achieve artistic freedom? How can freedom be experienced as a form of art? Can art create freedom?

THE ART OF FREEDOM is an Interdisciplinary Arts Conference that will take place on August 28, 2008 in Black Rock City, Nevada at Burning Man (www.burningman.com). Scholars and creative thinkers from all levels of education and experience are invited to submit proposals for panel presentations. Conference sessions will typically consist of panels of three 20-minute paper presentations, but we are also open to proposals with creative and unusual presentation formats (feel free to think outside the box!)

Possible presentation topics might include (but are not limited to):

* Inquiries related to Art, Freedom, and the “American Dream.”
* Considerations of Burning Man and its relation to culture, society, law, or politics.
* Discussions of specific Burning Man Art installations or projects.
* Presentations on censorship in relation to artistic freedom.
* Proposals for new directions in activism related to art and freedom.
* Explorations of the relationships between subcultural expression and “mainstream” cultures.

These are just a few sample topics – we are open to considering any presentation that offers an engaged and/or creative approach to the conference theme.

The conference will be hosted by Freedomcommunity at Burning Man, and all participants should be familiar with the unique conditions of the Black Rock City environment. Note that the minimum cost for attending Burning Man is over $200, so participants should already have plans to attend the festival or should be prepared to embrace the festival in its fullness.

For more information, please contact David Higgins, Glaukopis Conference Coordinator: (glaukopisproject@gmail.com).

Abstracts of 250 words should be sent to (glaukopisproject@gmail.com) no later than June 30, 2008.
m-pyre beach burn - july 26th - monterey, ca - 10a-10p

www.mpyreburn.com

m-pyre, the monterey regional burning man group is putting together a big community-centric beach burn for July 26th

this is going to be on del monte beach, next to whart 2, the window on the bay - this is a great time to bring art, community, free expression and LEAVE NO TRACE together to show monterey what its all about

we are going to be on the beach from 10a-10p - a full day of community, dance, art, performances, fire dancing, drummers, musicians, djs, random acts of radical expression, costumes and more!!

we are requesting a 10$ donation per person to help cover permit costs, insurance costs, etc - all 10$ donations get some really groovy schwag - to donate please go to www.mpyreburn.com and click the paypal link - there will be a will call list at the greeters station

i know many of you are unable to make it, but for those of you that can, this is a great time to come together as a community and enjoy our surroundings and each other and have a lot of fun in the process - everyone is able to participate whether that is just showing up and bringing some food to share or installing your art project on the beach for everyone to enjoy

please contact me if you are interested in participating at any level just send me an email letting me know what you would like to be a part of - fire safety, set up, recycling, tear down, greeting, etc.

love you all and even if you cant make it, spread the word and channel the good mojo for the m-pyre beach burn on july 26th!

m-pyre beach burn AFTERPARTY CONFIRMED!!!!! JULY 26TH - MONTEREY!

as if the 10a-10p beach party with your favorite djs, art, fun and nonsense on del monte beach (next to wharf 2, NOT the location we had last december) wasnt enough...now we have...

THE AFTERPARTY!!!

we have just secured the ol factory cafe (www.olfactorycafe.com) in sand city from 11p-4a

they will be offering a wine/beer bar, coffee/tea bar and midnight breakfast

this is a beautiful space, and as it stands, we dont have any issues with fire spinning in front of the venue - there is a residential house across the street, so if they get fussy with sound, that might be our only problem - otherwise, this whole area is industrial

lets support our burner-friendly businesses by taking the party to the ol factory cafe!!!

this is about a mile and a half from the beach burn, so its a totally walkable distance if you are too drunk to drive!!!

and dont forget - the beach burn is a suggested donation of 10$ per person to help cover all these costs

you can make your donation at the beach burn, or donate now at www.mpyreburn.com and save yourself the hassle!

all donations of 10$ or more will be given some really groovy schwag!!

Burning Man ticket Raffle is on!

Burning Man ticket Raffle is on!

That's right for just $5 YOU can get a chance at one ticket to Burning Man! Tickets to Burning Man 2008 are currently $295 on the web and there will be NO GATE SALES this year either. Yikes! So, here's your chance to get ONE TICKET for the ridiculously low price of just $5. How can we do this? We must be CRAZY to make this kind of offer! Dark Skies was gifted an extra ticket and we want to help a deserving burner and we're doing a fund raiser as well, so to tie it all in we're raffling this ticket off for $5 per entry. The drawing will be held on August 11th when we will announce the winner who will be selected by Peaches the Jack Russell Terrier rummaging in the ticket bowl.
Purely non-scientific but a lot of fun nonetheless!

TO ENTER: send $5 PER ENTRY via PayPal to darkskies@vegasartists.com
You may purchase as many entries as you wish, they are $5 each.
Each $5 entry buys you ONE CHANCE at winning this free ticket!
Good luck and have a great burn in 2008!

I wasn't going to go this year but after it began to hurt my heart at the thought, I am now working on making it happen. I unfortunately have very little to work with, so Im looking for a ticket between $200-$250? If anyone happens to have an extra ticket they would be willing to sell for that, please let me know!

My Newest Passion ~~ Beekeeping

Hello all you furry, firey, lovely friends :-)
I wanted to share with you that I am now the proud "honey mum" of 3 bee hives at my wonderful home and orchard in Scotts Valley ...

Did you know that bees pollinate about 80% of our fruits/veggies?
Have you heard that our bees are dying at an alarming rate of 36% last year? 31% the year before? I am doing something about this by taking care of my bees and giving them a safe place to live :-)

I would love to hear from any of you that have loved bees, cared for bees or are interested in learning more...
We need to start being sustainable and taking care of our planet and its lovely little buzzy inhabitants are a HUGE part of it...

Hope to hear from you~ Well, I'm off to tuck them into their little hives...

huggs to you all
