MORE ABOUT SILVANUS:
Silvanus is the Roman god of trees and the forest, particularly the area which borders open fields, petitioned before clearing wooded land or pruning trees. Silvanus also had some connection to hunting and harvesting fruit. He is often accompanied by a dog, wild animals, and three tree-nymphs known as the Silvanae, or the Motherly Ones (Matronae). Silvanus was also honored as an ancestral god of the Roman household alongside the Lares, the Penates, Janus, and Vesta. He was popular among the plebeians (common folk), freed slaves, and soldiers of the Roman Empire, along with Diana, Apollo, Ceres, Hercules, and the Dioscuri. Mars Silvanus was associated with both cattle and crops. It is possible that Silvanus, Mars, and maybe Faunus are all different aspects of a single Italic numen (nature spirit). Some modern-day saints, such as Fiacre, appear identical to Silvanus. Although similar to the Green Man, Silvanus is not represented with the same leafy features which combine tree and man.
