LAVA'S GROUNDED APPROACH ROCKS!!!!

I attended the July session of Lava's summer workshop series today and it did ROCK! It was an incredible day focusing on breathing, yoga, posture, strengthening and protection of the body. I loved the way you related all the poses to different bellydance moves and how you can improve them and take care of yourself.
So often when we dance, we can forget about our spines, hips and knees, and it was very helpful to have instruction on how to focus on all of these issues. I had an injured back this week and after today's class, I'm feeling sooo much better. I encourage everyone to take the next one on Sunday, August 17th. Dancing is a very demanding activity and our bodies deserve a little TLC! Thanks Lava!! Namaste everyone!

Hello, and thank you very much for the performance at TF8. I'm a student of Unmata's Amy Sigil at Hot Pot Studio in Sacramento, CA. Your performance was beautiful. It's entity was very moving and i almost lost my voice screaming your praises when you took your final steps off the stage.
I very much like your style of belly dance. Could you tell me more about it? For instance, what inspires your movements? I even went on youtube.com and watched the video: Alchemy Sisters - Take 2! It's very beautifully done.

Thanks for coming to TF and rocking my chakras ladies. Hope to see your brilliance again and SOON!!! You now have a dedicated fan down south. =-)

Announcement: New Studio in New Westminster! (cross-post)

EXCITING NEWS!

I am VERY pleased to formally announce that Ammara Dance Studio located at 40 Sixth St in New Westminster, is officially up, running and open for business!

Formerly Masabo Dance, Ammara Dance Company will continue the Masabo tradition of being a main center for West African Dance and drumming, continuing to offer classes with Internationally renowned performers and artists. In addition, we are offering Brazilian Capoeira, and we have added even more Belly Dance classes, fitness classes, and next month we begin our Yoga classes! Spread the news! :)

Ammara is now open for on-line registration and will be open starting tomorrow for in-person registration. Website is always being updated with new and exciting classes so check back often. Ammara offers all types of classes for ALL ages, there is something here for everyone! (And if there is a class you want to take that we don't offer, let me know and I'll see what I can do!)

Ammara Dance Studio is also available for rental during times when there are no classes scheduled.

If you are interested in running a class or workshop at Ammara, please PM me and I will give you the email address to send your proposal. We are currently open for submissions for summer classes and workshops and Fall classes.

I can't thank ENOUGH the people who have been so supportive and inspiring (and patient!) with me on this new endeavor. It is truly and exciting and every day that passes makes me SO thankful to be part of such a fantastic community.

Technique practice & Extras!

Next week - in between my winter and spring sessions - I am holding 3 special drilling classes!

Each class - Open to all levels.

these are for straight-up practice of specific moves that could always use more practice, and a chance for me to add in some of the special training tips that I don't always get to include in regular classes - deeper focus on specific movement - to help you develop muscle memory, and a greater understanding of why to do specific preparations for specific movements.

these will be yummy work-out sessions for those who like to work up a sweat, topped off with some wonderful cool-down poses, that you can (and should) take home to use after every practice.

* Thank you to MiMi's Cauldron & Witchazel Design for vending all their fabulous goodies - always new stuff, always great!

* And, I wanted to see how many people would be interested in a workshop that finished up both pieces of the 2nd track I gave out yesterday "Sekmetron", the choreography we worked on yesterday with finger cymbals, and "Love me, Love me" that I taught at my last tribal fusion choreography workshop in November 2007 (the one with the scream!)!

Please let me know how many of you would be interested in finishing/learning both pieces and put them together as they are in the 2nd track on the cd's I handed out yesterday (at the ZILLS DAT KILLZ workshop) - if there is enough interest, I would set up another workshop for this - to finish the whole piece and perhaps have it ready for the next Tribal Soiree!

"ZILLS" Workshop...

* just a note about the "ZILLS DAT KILLZ" Finger Cymbal workshop on Feb 17th - this pce of choreography is the *bonus piece* I was planning on using at my last tribal fusion workshop last November. So this pce follows the crazy "Love me Love me" pce we did that day. For those who attended that last one, we can try it all together at the very end of the workshop, if time permits.

This chroeography is still of course very adaptable to fit any style and really, who doesn't love 'MADURO'!?!

Level 1 class SOLD OUT!

Level 1 class - tuesday evenings is sold out for the winter session (goes till the end of Mar.), so for now, I will not have room for drop in, I'm afraid. So sorry, but I can't pack more people into this space, for the time being.

You can certainly check back in a few weeks to see what the status is on space availability.

* Students who have never joined the class before are certainly encouraged to register for a session for the first time through, since this class is based on dancing together, and following a format with a specific vocabulary of moves. If you are registered you are more likely to attend all (or most) of the classes and this allows the class to grow together and progress. If there are too many people who attend only now and then, it does slow the class down.

* These finger cymbal workshops are designed to be beneficial to bellydancers of any style, any skill level.

* Finger Cymbals are not only a wonderful accompaniment to Bellydance, but also it is a fabulous tool for learning musical timing and layering. So, whether you dance/perform with them regularly, or not, these workshops are meant to help everyone with hearing/feeling their music, their timing, and learn, practice & perfect the exciting art of Finger Cymbals. It is always a pleasure to experience someone dancing and using finger cymbals well, plus it is a wonderful talent to be able to make your own music, should you need it!
* This is also an excellent tool for training your body to layer movement - and many have found it to be a pivotal point in their layering abilities.

Tribal Soiree "thank you's"...

I just wanted to say thanks to everyone who came out to the Tribal Soiree last night! It was wonderful to see so many people show up and participate!!!!! That was incredible! I wanted to create an evening where we could all get together, all on the same vibe/wavelength, and just dance! I loved watching everyone - it was so beautiful, to see so many people dancing together, and see so many people smiling with each other and enjoying dancing together. *** Thank you all for totally participating "all out", "full-tilt", "bringin' it fully loaded", during all the "Everyone Dance" sections, you fulfilled the purpose and essence of the dance, and made my wishes come true!!! Thank you thank you thank you!
Thanks to Belly Belly Hip for performing and having an "Everyone Dance" section with them as well. It was gorgeous!!! and impressive to see so many people jump up and try a different style - Bravo to all of you! you all blended beautifully!
and also a big thanks to Audrey, "Wed-night-Allison", Gillian, Cathy, "Mon-night-Alison", Diane and Catherine (Patsy Stone) - for helping us out with the tasks throughout the evening. "Couldn't have done it without you!"
We truly appreciate your help, and the support of "everyone " who came out last night! I had a great night with you all. Hope you did too!

SOA's "Tribal Soiree"!

this is a head's up for all you lovely tribal students/dancers to save the date - Dec.17/07 - to come on out for SOA's "Tribal Soiree"!!!

Sisters of Alchemy's "Tribal Soiree" (Tribal Dance Night) is a night for students, tribal dancers and enthusiasts, practicing tribal lead & follow improv, to get together for a social evening of getting dressed up (in all your fabulous gear), having a few drinks/food, and dancing together with other students, tribal lead & follow dancers and mixin' it up together.
Lava's respective levels of classes will be presenting "demos", followed by 'open dance - lead & follow' with any other participants who want to join in and dance together.
A slightly informal evening for socializing and group dancing together to get some practice at what you learn in your classes, and get to know more people in this tribal community that we are trying to help build.

A more detailed description of the events of the evening will be posted closer to the date, plus, a performance by Sisters of Alchemy.
This is meant as a nice way to get together and finish out the year,doing what we love so much!

Pagan/Alternative Vancouver?

SOrry for putting this here, I'm just not sure where to find any Pagan information (bookstores, events, etc) in Vancouver. I'm from Halifax NS but I'm here for school. I want to know about all the alternative events here, there must be so many and I'm totally out of the loop and have not many friends here. Also Burlesque nights, Gothy fun, etcetcetc. Halifax may be little, but at least I knew everyone and how to get involved in things. Does anyone have any good ideas for becoming more immersed in the alternative scene here?

Finger Cymbals are not only a favorite accompaniment for bellydance, but also an excellent learning/practice tool for your timing, rhythm and musical instincts. Whether you choose to use finger cymbals in a performance setting or not, practicing finger cymbals will undoubtedly make you a better dancer by becoming connected with your music on another physical level.
Finger Cymbal Drilling techniques for a place to start for beginners and continued practice for those with some finger cymbal experience.

I didn't find this post on this tribe..but I am new to tribe so it is kinda hard for me to figure out : ) Anyhow, i am moving to Vancouver soon and I would love to find a new tattoo artist. I know people have recommended the Dutchman on other pages, as well as Infinity Ink, what do you think? Fave artists, places? I need some more ink once I can afford it, but I want to go to someone special. And preferably if they are good with colour, and flowers. I also relaly want a person who can do custom work, as I need their help designing a tattoo. Mwah!

Yard Sale Fundraiser - This Saturday!

Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls, come one and all to the Venus Bellydance Yard Sale Fundraiser 2007!

The students of Venus Bellydance have an opportunity to study in Argentina next year with the legendary Amir Thaleb! As such, they’ve been working their beads off to raise the funds needed to get there.

As part of our fundraising campaign for the year, we have organized a Yard Sale at 2253 Grant Street in Vancouver!

When: Saturday, August 18th (THIS Saturday, kids!)

Finally, Ala Nar is having their 2nd hafla!

Join Ala Nar in celebrating the talents of their amazing students and wonderful friends. It all happens on Wednesday June 27th @ 7:30pm at The End Cafe on the Drive.

Slinky Sunday!

Big big thanks to all of you who came out for my Tribal Duets "Black" Choreography workshop yesterday!!! Wow, we made it through the whole choreography in one afternoon!! and you all rocked it beautifully!!!! It was a fun choreography to teach and I was impressed at how well everyone picked it up!! Nice job!! I love that song and you all put some 'slink' into it!

The general skills intensive is a 15 hour course, usually taken at the FCBD studio, with Carolena teaching. With only 20 people in Toronto, you will have Carolena and Megha teaching and coaching. You will receive instruction in anatomy as it applies to dance, music theory, instruction in all FCBD steps and concepts, drills, critique and question and answer time.

In order to attend this workshop, you MUST have prior ATS knowledge either via class, workshop or FCBD instructional dvds. This is a must - not an option. Usually a dvd or in-person assessment is required in order to qualify for registration, but this has been waived for this event. Do not disappoint Carolena or Megha - be well prepared with the material. All volumes of FCBD dvds can be purchased through Cleopatra's Bazaar or directly from FCBD.

Once completed, you will receive a General Skills for ATS certificate. It should be noted that completing this certification does not qualify one to be an authorized ATS teacher.

Also included in the registration are gourmet catered vegetarian lunches each day, water and juice for all participants.

Tribal Fest 7 - Rocked!

I'm back from Tribal Fest - and still trying to process all that happened! I had a fantastic time and 'Rocked' the packed house while I performed!
It felt great being up there and dancing for all these fabulous people I admire so much! (an experience in itself!) Heather and Courage showed us a fabulous time - thank you thank you thank you!!!!
We met so many wonderful people (one of them being Tori!) and saw so so many great performances! SOOZ had the best hair ... and Unmata shouted the loudest!!!
Indigo charmed everyone and Urban Tribal finished us all off - breathtaking poses!!

I'm still running everything through my head and trying to make understandable sentences - tell you all about it soon!

Big big thanks to Shahrahzad for hosting me in a weekend of workshops and show in Kamloops BC, this past weekend!!! She did a fabulous job on the whole event (and danced several numbers in the show!) and to her lovely ladies (Banat Tariq) for helping out and keeping things running smooth - and supplying great food at the whole event!!! (that's always a plus!). And of course, a big big thank you to all the wonderful women who took the workshops and stuck it out all weekend (we did alot!). I applaud you all for jumping in and going full force both days!
I had such a wonderful time meeting you all and dancing with you! I hope your tired muscles are healing ...

The show was wonderful - completely full of high energy, and I throughly enjoyed watching you all!!

Yup, my stuff was stolen from my truck on Saturday night, April 14th, 2007 between 11:30 pm and 12:10 am in Sarnia, Ontario after the gala performance over the weekend. Window smashed and whole suitcase taken... Fuck me... The police feel that it was a targeted attack, meaning someone knew what was in that case and wanted it.

I just want it back if anyone knows where it is, who has it - PLEASE return it to me and I'll ask no questions. It's taken me years to collect all this stuff, most of it was purchased for specific reasons at specific times in my dance and regular life. I hate that I left it in the truck even thought it was only 30 minutes tops, but please......

My full costume including my turquoise & purple pin striped frilly pants, a black and grey striped skirt, my purple Mardi Love yarn belt and loads of tribal jewellery. My glasses, my make up, a favorite pair of leg warmers and arm warmers and all my make-up.

The jewellery includes
2 pairs of Miao spikey bracelets
3 pairs of large guage earring - 1 pair large heavy hoops is smaller guage, lots of danglies, a pair from bali also hoops and a pair of plain hoops large guage
1 modern choker with blue rhinestones center piece and purple small crystals (looks a little like a pooka shell necklace) that my hubby bought me for the birth of our last son
Large hinged silver bracelet that's a heavy thick bangle style with a flat rectangluar section on the hinged part
2 large afghani rings with burgundy stones
1 bangle style bracelet that's a heavy mesh metal with a long dangle
1 pair antique rajistani anklets with finely detailed chain and pin closure
1 antique flilgree and detailed piece that could be used for a belt or head piece
3 maio hair sticks

Duets Workshop

Thanks to all you lovely ladies that came out for my workshop - Tribal Duets & Slinky Sets, yesterday, I do hope you all had a great time! I did! And again, just a reminder that if you are interested in me holding another tribal duets workshop - to focus on the tribal fusion piece and finish it off - I could do that. It was looking pretty good - so if you would like to learn the rest of the dance - I can plan another workshop for that. Please let me know. I will be busy and out of town most weekends until June, but I can certianly set one up for June.

Good work to all of you - we actually did alot of stuff yesterday! It was a fun day - hopefully you got lots of ideas!!

anyone interested in taking the tribal duets workshop - even if you missed this one, please let me know - I can take more time to break down certain moves that some of you may have not been familiar with and fine tune all points.

"Tribal Duets & Slinky Sets" Workshop!

Sun. Apr.15/07 - "Tribal Duets & Slinky Sets" workshop (the 2nd workshop in my series this spring):

12 - 3:30pm @ Scotia Dance Ctr. - 677 Davie St.

This workshop will look at learning to dance in 2's and developing a connection. We will focus on both moves for lead & follow tribal, and tribal fusion - borrowing flavors from Indian style & Hip Hop style (cool, smooth moves), covering both styles - something for everyone. Intro to "energy practice and development" for ultimate presentation. Drilling specific moves & seqences with one or two combos, for each style. Smooth is the word & Slinky enough to make you say "oooh - aaaah"!
Workshop includes conditioning warm up, drills, and much practice in moves and presentation. Good for any level, or any style of bellydance.

Bring yoga mat, if you have one & lots of water!

$40 advance payment

I just wanted to say thanks to Amber, Allison, Audrey - (my triple A special!) - and Shelley (MiMi's Cauldron & SOA member) & Shana (Witchazel Design & SOA member) - for rockin' out their special skillz at my level 1 class last night - they gave a great demo together - great representation of ATS lead/follow format - Nice work ladies!!!

Thanks so much for being there and doing a great job! Plus, you all looked so nice!!! (Allison - you looked especially hot last night!)

CHANGES to Skye's Winter Hafla '07

Hello Everyone,

Well, it's one week from showtime and some unforseen issues have cropped up. Fortunately I have a plan B which may be even better than plan A anyhow! So, here's the long and short of it...

Things have changed slightly. The Aldergrove Kinsman Community Centre made some serious errors in their booking of our event on the Saturday Night, and now they are charging me just under $1000 to rent the space which I have to pay out of pocket, in full, by Monday. They never actually booked the hall (despite my numerous confirmations), and now in order to have any space at all this is what it is going to take... not to mention that the time of our performace wont be able to start until 8pm. So I have had to make alternate arrangements... as follows:

The Student night will now be on SUNDAY, MARCH 25, 2007 in LANGLEY. It will now be held at BELUGA BAR & GRILL: 21671 Fraser Hwy, Langley, BC, V3A 4H1. The phone number is 604-533-7223. This means we are no longer doing a Potluck, nor is there a ticket charge!! (YAY!!) Just come and enjoy the great food this fabulous venue has on their menu. (The food there is awesome and the prices are VERY resonable!! On Sundays, all their weekly specials apply, so most things are several bucks off, too!) The show will NOW START at 7PM and be done when it's over (no more than 2 hours I should imagine) and if you'd like to hang out and mingle or dance some more you are welcome to do so. It won't be a super late night for those working the next morning... by 9 or 10pm you will be free to venture home! Also, you will still be able to bring all your guests... BUT PLEASE CONTACT ME THIS WEEK WITH YOUR FINAL NUMBERS!!!! THE RESTAURANT NEEDS TO KNOW!

I am so sorry to have to alter these arrangements, but it was NOT in my control and I am not prepared to charge anyone more, nor was I prepared to pay such an outrageous fee for a 2-3 hour event! I think this will work out better for everyone as now you don't have to prepare any food yourselves, nor do you have to pay for tickets! Just come and enjoy a night out with some fabulous dancing and delicious food prepared just for you!

PLEASE, plan to be at the restaurant by 6:30pm so we can start on time (and you can order food...). Any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to email me back or call me. Thanks for understanding! It's gonna rock - this venue is wondeful and I think you will all love it!
