Hola Bob, listeners...
Is there such a thing as a Six Degrees store in San Francisco?
If one were wandering from their side of the continent to visit ::coughcough:: where would be a good place to snag Six Degrees of goodness in one place?

Re: Six Degrees Store in SF?
Fri, June 27, 2008 - 3:52 AMThe only 6D shop I know is the one online shop.sixdegreesrecords.com/app ;D
However, when folks visit the city by the bay, a music shopping day at Amoeba's is usually in order www.amoeba.com/ Talk about a well-stocked store, one should easily find all current 6D releases and older stuff there.
When I'm in SF, I usually shop at the Virgin Megastore at the corner of Market & 4th, right downtown, cuz it's right across from where I stay. They also feature 6D releases prominently (on the topmost floor/world music section) and also have weekly sale prices.
6D is pretty well-distributed at major retail outlets across the country. I just picked up my copy of the new Niyaz at FYE in Miami and it was on sale too! :D -

Re: Six Degrees Store in SF?
Fri, June 27, 2008 - 8:41 PMJacques, I live in Toronto which seems to stock two of anything Six Degrees. Once it is gone, you're SOL.
I actually wrestled with another guy for the last copy of Backbeat at HMV in downtown, because I knew there wasn't another one in the Toronto area.
I was just hoping Six Degrees had a store so I could see all their offerings at once. I'm totally an impulse buyer. :/
I believe I went to Amoeba the last time I was there. Is that near the Haight?
Thanks for the directions on where to buy stuff. -

Re: Six Degrees Store in SF?
Fri, June 27, 2008 - 10:56 PMHiya Valizan, I know what you mean about stores that only stock two copies of Six Degrees stuff, unfortunately that seems to be the rule rather than the exception.
The FYE in South Beach, Miami, also only had two copies of Niyaz's Nine Heavens on their shelves. Luckily, I went there on the very Tuesday the album got released. The first question the store attendant asked me when I mentioned Niyaz was "is that the Hawaiian guy?," to which my response was "No, it's a trio that plays Persian fusion music." LOL
Amoeba's is indeed in the Haight. The last time I went there was actually with a very dear Tribe friend of mine, DJ Lady Ra of Vancouver, BC, when we came down to check out the Wordly event featuring Six Degrees artists Cheb i Sabbah, the MIDIval PunditZ, and Karsh Kale back in September of 2005 (Incidentally, I just saw KK and the PunditZ at SOB's in NYC this past Thursday; they also have upcoming shows in Toronto and SF if you're interested). Anyway, Amoeba's is definitely for the impulsive eclectic music buyer like so many of us :)
I haven't been to Amoeba's in a couple of years now tho I know I'll go berserk the next time go there and spend my entire music budget for two months easily. Btw, last time I was in Toronto was two summers ago--got to see the musical version of Lord of The Rings (with music composed by A R Rahman and Varttina) and Chebiji's show at the Gypsy Co-op the same night! -

Re: Six Degrees Store in SF?
Fri, June 27, 2008 - 11:13 PMUnfortunately, Gypsy Co-op is gone. Too bad, I really liked it there. They had bellydance on Sunday nights and coolness happening all during the week.
Problem is, they didn't seem to like paying their rent! :-/
Gotta love store attendants without a clue, eh?
I'm interested in Karsh Kale's Toronto concert. I just missed Nitin Sawnhey's concert. He played with the Toronto Symphony! I had to work, so I couldn't go. :(
Last time I was in Amoeba I dropped $250 U.S. (which is half a year's music budget for me) but I kept finding stuff I knew I'd never find at home. I think I bought my first Six Degree's album there. Hm. :) -

Re: Six Degrees Store in SF?
Fri, June 27, 2008 - 11:30 PMKK along with the PunditZ and Vishal Vaid perform in Toronto on July 24, a week before their SF show
sixdegreesrecords.com/tourdates.php
Too bad about Gypsy Co-op, I enjoyed dancing there the night Chebiji played. It was at the time his La Ghriba album came out, so lotsa Gnaoua tunes mixed in with the bootiful bhangra. And yes, there were some tribal belly dancers in full garb in attendance that night :)
Yes, I wanted to go soo bad when I heard about Nitin's TO show! Only time I've seen him was a triple acoustic-full band-DJ set (and we were dancing in the rain) at WOMAD Singapore five years ago, so I can't complain. Speaking of HMV stores, I bought Nitin's Philtre at the HMV in Van four years ago, so they do their best in stocking our kind of music I guess.
When one goes to Amoeba's after an interval, one can expect to shop $200 worth of CDs at the very least :) Amoeba's is def an SF institution just like Six Degrees Records. -
