MYTH #1 you can't insure a skoolie. we all know what a load of crap THAT is. most skoolies get hiers from GMAC through thier membership in the good sam club. as do I . mine is $112 bi-annually. the key to this is getting your schoolbus re-titled as a MOTORHOME. THEN NEVER EVER EVER refer to it as a BUS again.
how do you insure your skoolie?

well, I can tell you that I made about 20 calls after I called my own company and they gave me an outrageous quote. All were very high until I found a small farmers mutual company that was willing to take me on for 300/6 months. My record is spotless and claim free. This has been my experience (Ontario, Canada). I had no trouble registering it as a motor home but the insurance co's don't seem to care. They can't see past the possibility that you will be hauling dozens of people around for hire. I would love to find insurance for 112$.

if you will goto groups.yahoo.com/group/sch...versionuts and look at the left hand side of the page you will see DATABASE go look at the insurance folder.
if your bus has been re-titled as a MOTORHOME the QUIT CALLING IT A BUS!!! it's NOT a BUS! thats where you been making your mistake. as you will see in the folder that many are paying similar. JOIN GOOD SAM. then apply as a member for insurance from GMAC. you'll get respect that way.

Problem is...when I give them the information, they ask for the VIN etc. and then they can't find it on their system for obvious reasons. The questions then come...what the hell are you supposed to say. It looks like a bus, different colour.....no seats, I mean, I'm getting frustrated here..

sorry i didn't see your post. what do you mean??? it didn't show up on thier system??? for what obvious reason??? who's SYSTEM are you referring too??? every VIN # in existance is in EVERYONES DATABASE that i know of!! did you get it correct??? of the HUNDREDS of skoolie owners in OUR DATABASE none reports any such situation as you describe. maybe you should do like we advise and try insurance companies who do insure skoolies. thier catagory designation is BUSC. is your skoolie LICENSED and TITLED as a MOTORHOME???? if so then it is a MOTORHOME. if not it's a BUS. you can't put the cart before the horse. either way if the vin# was correctly entered it would show up on anyones database. sorry you're frustrated. we often see that it is a matter of ATTITUDE as to how much trouble insurance is. whenever this subject is brought up i try to get insurance on my skoolie under an assumed name. they ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS insure me. they also ALWAYS ALWAYS catch that my alias is not the registered owner of that skoolie. so i bet you didn't get it right.

since i live in the midwest, andin a tiny town to boot, i had a heck of a time finding anyone to cover me. tried gmac goodsam, they never replied to my request. so, on a wild hair, i connected to my local farm bureau. they insure everything from your life to your crops and anything in between. they quoted me at 350 per year including membership fee. this membership helps with hotels, sherwin williams paint, plus loads of other stuff that i probably will never use. however, my bus (oops..., my motorhome) is now insured, and my wife and i can drive it around. beat the heck out of seeing it sit in out front like a great big yellow lawn ornament.

too bad you didn't CALL goodsam on thier TOLL FREE number. while your $ quote seems fair you illustrate what i just said... ATTITUDE has a lot to do with it. if you HAD called good sam you could have been insured long ago. in MINUTES. for maybe $100 less.
p.s. good sam also has fringe benefits.

one more thing i thought it worth mentioning. GMAC has LOWERED my premium TWICE. when i first used them it was $127 x 2 after a year no claims they lowered it to $119 x 2. couple years later they lowered it again to $112 x 2. i suppose it reflects the lowered value of the skoolie.
