Hey all i am new and got some questions...

Alright i have wanted to make a skoolie for a while now but the problem is i can't find any cheeps buses in my area... if anybody knows where to find a cheep old bus either school or city in the san diego area let me know... i tried calling the Transit system down here but they were not very helpful. Was thinking of calling the department of education to see if i can get a bus through them. Any ideas would be great :) i tried e-bay but all the ones i have seen are either mid west or east coast and i am in the military so i don't have a ton of money or time to fly some place and drive the bus back... also a person i saw in one at a campground who owns a skoolie said that you can drive them with just a regular class C licenses is that true or is he just pulling my chain? Also can you bring them into state parks and national parks... i know that a lot of national parks have a size limits on the size of the RV you can bring in so was wondering about that as well. Thank you for all your help in advance =)

Howdy folks

My name is Patrick. I buy and sell buses and bus parts to fund my non profit work. You can check it out at http://www.fresnoalliance.com/wheelchairproject

I have sold many buses to tribe folks, and others doing creative things with the machinery.

It is one of my nicest buses, a 1974 Gillig that is almost flawless. It has a healthy 3208 CAT diesel with a 5 speed, good rubber, and EVERYTHING works like all buses I sell.

If you wanna see it or pass the info onto a friend, it's on Craig's List, here is the link

http://sfbay.craigslist.org/eby/car/435500436.html

Ok that's it. Anybody got any questions, just give me a call. My number is at the end of the ad.

Veggie bus on Ebay

We've been hit with financial trouble like crazy and are selling our school bus to get out of debt again. Although we poured over $20,000 into the interior, upgrades, and SVO system, we listed on Ebay for $5,000 item #220074616955 . It's a steal for a converted school bus with great SVO system, the veg system alone cost us over $5,000. Even to buy an older bus and convert it youself would cost more and the nice thing about Ebay is that you can make payments.

Can you tell we're desperate? Pass on the info, we would love for her to go to kind people.

Howdy folks

I just got some more buses. All diesel, nothing over 4500 dollars, all with warranty.

Two have automatics, all the rest are 5 or ten speed manuals.

Just give me a yell if you know anyone who needs a bus or any bus part

2-story skoolie dwelling, greenhouse, or...?

Ok, since the tribe description said "anything", off-topic posts welcome,etc... . ;)

I've always been intrigued with those redneck "2-story" structures that are made of something-weird-sittin-on-top-of-something-else. You know, a mobile home (excuse me, I mean "trailer") sitting on top of a house, a car or other vehicle stuck on top of a structure to form a 2nd floor, even cars welded onto giant signs or to the roof of the building to advertise junk yards, etc. Haven't seen many of 'em, ever (maybe a couple of dozen in my lifetime) but they always make me laugh, and I really do appreciate the ingenuity as well as the overall "F*%$ you if you don't like my taste!" mindset. Over the years this fondness has evolved into a plan, i.e. "I think I might do one of those". I like the idea of art-meets-recycling-meets-dwelling. I liked school buses as a kid, and have always wanted to own one. Somehow the notion of climbing up some steps to get to a "school bus room", with a view of the trees, and all those windows... . Makes perfect sense to me. :0

Seems like an older bus would be great as a 2nd floor art studio, sunroom/plant room, meditation room etc. [I have a secluded spot for it, and what-the-neighbors-think is a non-issue, as are building codes, I think---- they'll never know it's there]. For whatever idiosyncratic reason, I prefer that my future skoolie be "up high" rather than just sitting on the ground (I know, I know, whatever I can do to make my life more difficult....). The idea is for the first floor area to be storage, or maybe open (sort of like a carport or shed), or maybe enclosed. That part of the plan is flexible. Whether the bottom floor served as another full room (fully enclosed), or was sort of open-patio-like, etc, the main focus of the structure would be the bus, accessible via a short set of stairs. I'm thinking that the bus would only need to be raised enough for minimal headroom underneath (7-8 feet would be just fine), and for it to feel like it was truly "off the ground" a bit.

Anyone ever see anything like this anywhere? What sort of foundation/structure could I set the bus on for this purpose? How much would an average size bus weigh, minus engine, transmission, axles (?), and tires? 70 to 80 foot mobile homes are routinely set pretty high in the air (4-5 feet is not uncommon) on nothing more than unsecured stacks of cinder blocks. They're tied down via a few metal straps anchored into the ground. Yes, they blow all over hell in tornadoes and hurricanes, but so do lots of other structures...and I'm not in tornado country. There must be a fairly easy and totally safe way to do this...yes?

I see buses going for $350--$700 all the time on Ebay-- running. If I don't need the bus to run, I'm sure I could get one ultra-cheap. How much do you think it would cost to get it hauled? Do rollbacks handle these things? Of course, there's the matter of getting a crane to set it, but I recently found out there's a crane service near me. Surely it's be a straightforward job, a no-brainer for a crane crew.

Ok, feel free to poke holes in this idea, or tell me what would/wouldn't work. :)

hello. i just bought a skoolie and am staying with arkansascajun right now here in eureka springs, arkansas. we're having a great time and sharing ideas. i bought my bus from greg (at http://www.floridachurchbus.com). he gave me a great deal and i am excited to turn it into my home. my plan is to tour around and do archaeology gigs and save the money. the bus is a huge 84 passenger rear engine 1989 bluebird all american with a cummins 8.3, a brand new automatic allison transmission, air brakes, power steering, and drives like a gargantuan steamboat. it is huge and i am afraid that i might get lost inside with all the room. i think it's about 40 feet long. please feel free to ask any questions or share advice. safe travels, -dean

i bought another skoolie. i got it from greg.he made me an offer i couldn't refuse :)) it's a 1989 thomas saf-t-liner. it has 3208 cat, air brakes. it only has 25,xxx miles. good tires. the last three years it was used to convey spectators to/fro the pits at indy.
although i knew i had another skoolie in me i thought it was a couple years in the future. i just couldn't pass up the low mileage. it may set a couple years before i can get around toit. of course i'll convert to wvo as well as convert to motorhome. goto greasebus and see my innovative ideas on the subject.
it seems that the grease community is populated by a buncha rube goldbergs just like the skoolie movement. mostly crooks complicating a simple subject so they can sell thier complicated solutions.
i have simplified it greatly. i'll post photos when i gettem.

MYTH #1 you can't insure a skoolie. we all know what a load of crap THAT is. most skoolies get hiers from GMAC through thier membership in the good sam club. as do I . mine is $112 bi-annually. the key to this is getting your schoolbus re-titled as a MOTORHOME. THEN NEVER EVER EVER refer to it as a BUS again.
how do you insure your skoolie?

bieng totally new to tribes i am still investigating them. i have a lot to learn. like how do you connect/disconnect connected tribes. i have already started a few and joined several. i cannot seem to fathom how the tribes connect. for instance i wanted this tribe to link to other tribes beside the one shown. anyone have instruction?
it seems to me that one of the distinct advantages of tribes is thier graphics capacity. since i can find no FILES the CLUB PHOTOS will be used for "COVER PHOTOS" of members skoolies. you know what i mean? exterior quarter shots. put your name in the title so interested parties can find your personal album. put ANYTHING YOU WANT in your personal album. and apparantly as much of it as you want. PLEASE POST a PHOTO to your profile. it can be ANY PHOTO of ANYTHING. i am sure you notice the difference in acceptable content here vs. groups.
another plus for tribes is that when you search it ALL instants of the word appear. boy do i wish groups had that. SOOOOOO it appears that if we are going to build any how-to capabilities HERE we will have to START THE SUBJECTS NOW! NOW!
THATS where YOU the members come in. help me by thinking of the most asked questions and posting NEW SUBJECTS so the the threads can get going. instead of WAITING for questions lets make this a pro-active tribe. lets hear what YOU DID in any particular area of your conversion. i'll get some started. tell us what you did. the subject matter can be ANYTHING. if you have ideas about how we can make this tribe better please post them.
i am really counting on the membership to build this TRIBE !
thanks for joining.

I saw the Jacuzzi Skoolie listed on E-Bay a couple of months back. In the description it said "Driven once from Michigan to Reno, Nevada". Sounds like Burning Man to me! Did anyone see it? Any comments if you did?

if i can help just ask.
