Hello, everyone:
Has anyone ever heard of SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives)? If so, have you taken any of their workshops, and were they helpful to you starting your own business?

Re: Opinion on SCORE & the SBA
Wed, May 27, 2009 - 4:43 PMI approached 'em once years ago., Useless hardly says it.
But the entity may be more aggressive and active where you are. -

Re: Opinion on SCORE & the SBA
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 7:07 PMMy local chapter always has workshops going on, but they seem to only cater to businesses that are already up and running. I'm interested in raising money or capital to start a business, and how to determine how much might be needed for whichever venture or idea. That's where they seem to be lacking. -

Re: Opinion on SCORE & the SBA
Sat, May 30, 2009 - 8:32 AMWOW that's way far more than what I experienced.
I was in the Bangor Maine area. I contacted SCORE and this guy called from them, said he'd meet us and talk. He wanted me to buy him drinks and lunch and that was it. I mean that was fucking it. -

Re: Opinion on SCORE & the SBA
Thu, May 28, 2009 - 7:53 PMSCORE is very uneven across the country but, having been to two good chapters, I found their advice and help was the turning point for my business. The SBA, not so much for me. Your mileage may vary.

Re: Opinion on SCORE & the SBA
Wed, July 29, 2009 - 1:42 PMThe SBA where I am is not very helpful at all. Mostly it's like a retirement club for older local businesspeople who sold or closed their shops. -

It's too bad that there is such bad history with SCORE/SBA.
Here in Seattle, the quality of the coaches are amazing, and the professionalism is equally impressive.
That said, it's a beginner's game with them for the most part. As soon as you reach past the first few levels of what they do, they push you to a professional contractor. -

Re: Opinion on SCORE & the SBA
Fri, May 21, 2010 - 8:31 AMI have been a consultant with the New Jersey Small Business Development Centers, which is another part of the SBA. Recently the centers have been trying to target businesses beyond the startup phase. More established businesses may be willing to pay a higher fee for workshops devoted to specific needs.

Re: Opinion on SCORE & the SBA
Sat, November 14, 2009 - 10:07 AMI've had decent experience with them. I found that you have to search around a bit through their catalogue of coaches before finding ones that you gel with and will give thorough and good advice. But, it didn't take that much looking and contacting of their coaches before I got ahold of a couple really informative gents. I've not gone to a meeting/seminar of theirs though. They don't seem too badly priced, but as a new business owner, I was interested in several of the topics; And that adds up.
Maybe I just totally missed the local chapter, but seems like the closest location to even go to the seminars (from Los Angeles) is San Diego. Which is about a 3 hr hike.
I'd like to establish something in Los Angeles that performs the function of networking and learning from other business owners, but for a much lesser cost. I put this up for suggestion in a tribe-a-doo that I just posted ("female business owners"). What yall think?

Re: Opinion on SCORE & the SBA
Sun, June 6, 2010 - 5:06 AMMy general experience with SCORE and SBA is that you will get "some" good information -- but most of what I ever learned from them I either already knew from personal experience OR I found on line.
