Any of you read "The E-Myth"? I thought it was a pretty good book, but I've never run a business, so what the hell do I know? How about some suggested reading from some of you successful small business owners...

Subscription Based Video Pod Casting?

Hello all:

Does anyone have any knowledge about Pod Casting? Specifically creating a Video Pod Casting Subscription base, i.e. The end client pays a monthly fee for access to Video Pod Cast (Vodcast) of a training program!

-Do you have a server you use that manages the subscriber database and monthly fees?
-Do you like them?
-Who do you use?
-What problems have you encountered?

I'm doing the research to put together a business model and any input or actual experience with this would be helpful! Apple has an immense amount of usefuly information in the actual creation of the end product. But it is a realatively new business development in terms of the Video market, so as usual, there are hundreds of start-ups out there that "specialize" in this. I'm trying to weed through the "specialist" now.

Thanks in advance!

Hello,
My husband and I are starting our own landscaping service. He has worked in landscaping for over five years, and we recently decided it was time to take the plunge into the small business pool. It is a bit icy! Can anyone offer any advice, or even just encouragement. We have put everything we had into this, and it would be very crappy to watch it fall apart (not to mention the whole paying the bills thing) I appreciate positive takes, please don't be negative, I have enough doubt floating around my head as it is. Thanks!

Does anyone here have any experience with any company that provides this service? If so, can you please share the pros and cons of such?

Looking for investors…

Here is the concept a counter cutler B&B , to server our tribe members.
There are areas were this concept would work very well , I am not talking about a commune or an artist colonial but moor to the liking of an Bed and Breakfast with a deferent feel more organic and green thin main stream. To open several in certain areas like Reno, Oregon, Taos, Santa Cruz and the Bay Area, with some of the profits going back in to the community supporting organic farmers.

I putting this out there to see if yall like the idea 1st , thin I’ll seek out properties in the above mentioned areas, if I get good feedback then well ……you may see AD’s here only for Organic B&B’s. So let me know what you think.
Or if you have good size house or a apartment building ,land and or a farm that you’re trying to sale and would take a limited interest in a B&B for a down payment.

Let me know….thanks and blessings to you.

Translation Software?

Hey Does anyone know anything about this software?

http://www.systransoft.com/translation/translation-products/desktop/systran-premium-translator/features

or this one:

http://lec.com/listProduct.asp?product=World&family=Power-Translator

I am thinking of using it for my SmartSpine.com website since we are now selling in Japan, Germany, Holland and France. Additionally, I have promotional material to translate and it seems one of these would be good. Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks!

Legal Advice Freebie

Computers and businesses and law suits and crime – your worst nightmare - I mean worst~!!

If a company has a policy that all data is to be destroyed on some schedule – and it is followed they can not be faulted in court Just so long as they had no knowledge of a litigation. If they have knowledge of a litigation they may find it wise to preserve data.

I advise my business clients to:

1.) Disallow computers from being used to communicate sensitive information. This is hard because most employees cant understand why a great many things should never be made digital and permanent. They just don't get it.

2.) Back up needed data and physically destroy hard disks replacing them every six months. Yup destroy them as in a shredder or fire. There is no known data erasure method that can prevent the police form recovering deleted and over written data. Nothing can do it. Nothing. Ya gotta destroy the disk in the drive.

Most larger companies have made all their desk top PCs dumb terminals again. Some don't allow hard drives at all (this is the best solution).

The reason I make that advice is simple. People misbehave.
Sometimes they don't know it.
Sometime they don't know how damming the material they are making digital - and permanent - can be.
Sometime the people who are misbehaving are not associated with that computer or company at all but, invaded it from outside.

Examples of what can go wrong run the gamut from employee e-mails talking about company business or fellow employees later being subpoenaed and used in a lawsuit -(whenI subpoena computer information I subpoena everything on the company computers having it imaged by a service – I get everything on every computer- period) - all the way to the far far end where some poor bastard logged onto a site (such as a Peer to Peer site that has interesting video or music or games) and ended up getting infected with a stealth-bot program that used the company computers to warehouse and transmit child porn ( yes it happens exactly like that). One particular company in PA had this happen. The horror is that the company is small and not publicly traded. This meant that the prosecutors went after the poor SOB who owned the company - even though he didn't use that computer. He is defending - right now- felony charges of trafficking in and possession of child porn.

Or the small business which uses shitty security and a radio router who gets hacked from the parking lot VIA laptop and used to do the same vile thing.
Once the police find evidence of kiddie porn it makes no difference whether you knew of it or even had the technical savvy to decrypt it and see it. It's like heroin - if it's on you, it's yours.

This happened to two kids that I know of, one in the S. West (http://tinyurl.com/yzvass) and another in PA. Kids on P-to-P networks got their boxes turned into stealth bots for child pornographers and the prosecutors were didn't care that the kids never knew and couldn't have discovered it 'cause of the high level encryption. They were implacable. Both of those kids found a resolution but not until after they each spent maybe a hundred thousand dollars on legal defense fees, incurred ruined lives and reputations.

So I advise all my clients to make it company policy to remove and physically destroy all hard disks every 6 months.

Legitimate wholesale suppliers

Hey all,

I've been trying to research and look for legitimate wholesale suppliers. I don't mean the E-bay people and I don't mean the ones online who "claim" to be wholesale or dropshippers and I don't mean the liquidators that you have to purchase by the pallet or more.

I live in Los Angeles and have gone downtown a few times but since I work during the week and our retail venture is still really small and very new within the retail store that my husband works at I'm only available on the weekends and the Gift Mart and Cal Mart are not open on the weekends.

I like handcrafted items, gifty items, small colletibles, and such. I've found a some crafters that will sell their wares at discounted/wholesale but usually even those prices are slightly high for our market.

Also, our space is very very limited; we have about 60 - 75 sq ft within a store with total (including storage, counter, bathroom, & office) of about 750 sq ft. We cannot afford $wise nor space wise to have to purchase large quantity of items and often I find $500 minimums, occasionally $250 or $300 minimums but still that is usually too much quantity for us as well as straining our budget right now.

If anyone has ideas or suggestions or links I would appreciate your suggestions. Thank you.

Question: Web site redirects...

I'm reading about how to do website redirects. I think I understand how to do this but I have one (in my opinion) very important question.

Here's the situation. My website is long: www.SacredEarthAncientWays.com
I've purchased a shorter site (www.se-aw.com) to use in situations where the long site is not practical.

I would like to redirect clients to www.SacredEarthAncientWays.com immediately when they go to www.se-aw.com (I don't want a 301 notification - I just want it to redirect immediately).

My question is: Do I need have have www.se-aw.com hosted? I would assume yes. I use Netgate for my hosting (I don't have my own server).

If someone could advise me, I would appreciate it. I'm not locked into Netgate, they are just nice guys over there and are local.

Thanks in advance.
Hello - new member introduction

Hi, I'm Stefanie and I have a small home based business selling (primarily) hand crafted natural body products as well as hula hoops and belly dance costume pieces. This is a side business so it hasn't had my full attention. That has has some positives and negatives...although the positives are that it's given me some time to see what I actually *need* based on how my business runs.

I've spent the last two years focusing on stabilizing the prodcut line, manufacturing, and aquiring or building equiptment.

At this time, I am learning how to do web-pages. In the meantime, I have my crap-ass (that's a technical term) text website which has worked for clients in the past (at least it's out there). I am moving, as an interim, to etsy.com for a cart/checkout system since it has all the features (except that it has competitors - he he he) I am looking for/want to try out at this time.

I have some business experience with a previous partnership...and it was invaluable. I learned *a lot* about taxes...and we even got audited! Which was - all in all - a piece of cake.

Hello! And check me out at www.SacredEarthAncientWays.com (although the web page will tell you it's under construction!).
Tax Question for SF biz

I have a question about "amount of 2007 gross receipts from sf sources". I'm a yoga teacher and I had bought equipment for my classes and marketing materials all online. So I didn't buy them in SF, but I used them here. I sometimes get VERY CONFUSED with how IRS words these things. does anyone know what i'm talking about? I want to know if I can claim some of these things as a business expense. Ahhh!

thanks,

I can buy a vendor canopy tent for $50 - used but in good shape - good starter tent. However the iron rails that attach to the tent seem to be really expensive so I was thinking of using white (to match the tent cover) Lattice

trade show attendance

for some reason, I cannot find out what the attendance is at an industry trade show I want to attend.... and as a result, I am not sure how much collateral I should take to hand out.

Since it costs so much just to have a booth at the trade show, I want to take the opportunity to pass out as much as I can... the difference between 5000 pieces and 10000 pieces is only about $300... BUT, having an extra $300 could determine whether I eat for the duration of the trade show... heh.

Any idea how to find out how much literature to take to an industry trade show? I have searched the web for previous notifications, etc.

Hello Everybody,
I have a small business. I sell Indian imports and Belly Dance costuming. I have a small store, but had also plan to sell online. I do not have web design experience, nor do I have the funds to hire a web designer. I am looking for a web site hosting company that I can go with. I need a company that will allow me to design my website, perhaps with templates, but some sites I see with free templetes are cheap/cheesy looking. I have looked at Go Daddy where I have my domain name held and I have looked at Yahoo as well. I had been sent some links and looked at them. They are way cheaper than Go Daddy or Yahoo. Almost dirt cheap compared to the two above. Anyone have any experience with DIY hosting companies that can suggest where I might be able to go and what to look for/look out for. While I am web design illiterate, I am pretty good with the computer as a whole. I am hoping for unlimited caps on my items to sale. One of the above websites that I mentioned charges in increments of items sold. Help! I would be greatly appreciative.

Retail Sales Feedback.

Hi all,
Just wanted to reach out to other retailers out there. How is post-christmas sales going? How do you feel the fear of recession is affecting sales? Right now we are experiencing a severe slowdown. Sometimes it is hard not to take it personal. I have found it to be very comforting sharing with other business owners and getting out my feelings of concern, and seeing that I am not alone. What I do to give myself some sense of undeerstanding is that I started paying attention to the business section of the newspaper and reading about the retail industry. Even though I am no Macy's, Target or Walmart, it gives me some sort of clarity in understanding what is happening in the market based on the reports on these big stores and other sales news. It is raining bad here. We are in the San Francisco Bay Area and had a severe storm a little while ago (I know, I know.. this is nothing compared to other parts of the country...) and it is forecasted to be raining for the next 9 days. This is the reason I had hoped to have an internet presence as well. People don't get out to shop in this weather, but don't mind shopping from the comfort of their home. Anyway, what is your perception of the sales market and those of you with more experience than me (this is my second winter in a fixed retail location) how do you battle the winter slowdown?

I will be opening a lounge that will serve gourmet coffee & pastries... basically a coffee shop w/ SOME alcohol. Definitely not a full bar or anything but there will be the classic "coffee cocktails" & such. My question is, would this still put me in the same category as a BAR or is there something else my place would be considered? Anyone else have experience w/ this kind of lounge/ cafe?

Money. Getting it & keeping it.

I really think everyone should read two books on investing before they start:
1.) Jason Kelly’s little book “Neatest Little Guide to Stock Market Investing” is an entirely worthy read because it’ll quickly bring you up to speed on much of the jargon and odd quirky things about securities and offer you a brief introduction to the most successful schools of investing. It’s a little book and an easy read.

2.) Benjamin Graham’s book “The Intelligent Investor.” It is the single most respected work on the market.

Then start building your future. Like Graham, I suggest you look at all the best of the American Companies and do the fundamentals in ‘em look at the numbers and learn a little about the business models and the market the sell to. Wouldn’t it be nice to land a few ten baggers? Don’t look for it. Slow and steady is the path to meaningful personal wealth. You may hit a ten bagger that way but, you won’t hit a slew of losers.

Don’t worry that you will lose money in the stock market. Of course you will lose money - - every one loses money~!! But, you only have to be right some tiny fraction of the time. If I could be right just 50% (yah 50%) of the time I’d be a Billionaire by now. If you haven’t got an investment portfolio that you manage and grow you should start one – AFTER you read Ben Graham’s book.

As an aside: Jim Cramer’s books are so totally worthless and disappointing that I used mine for starting fires in my fireplace. Do not purchase anything written by Cramer.

On the flip side of you are so leery of investing that you just won’t - or - can’t scrape up the $5 – $10-Gees you need to start, there is a supremely good alternative.

Open an ING or HSBC (or whoever) account. They are high interest accounts yielding as much as 5+ percent which is pretty damn good~!! I know many people who earn substantial money trading and investing in the stock market who think that a 5% year is a good year.

This account is one that you will NEVER take money from. It is how you are going to retire.

Put $100.00 a week in the account like it was the single most important in the world to do(and it is). If you haven’t got $100.00 then figure out what you have and put that away and do it every damn week.

Increase this sum by a fixed percent every year. I suggest 5% but if you can do more then do it.

So the end of the first year you will increase the sum you put away to $105.00 - Etc.

At the end of 20 years you will have well over a million dollars more like one-million three-hundred thousand.

Start now and make it your first priority for the rest of your life and you will retire well.

Hi - My name is Ahna and I am an artist with my own business. One way to help promote is to exchange promotional materials. How it works: I send you some of my promotional materials such as my postcards, and you include one in with your sales packages and I do the same for you! I am looking for businesses outside the art market, I make jewelry, candles, perfume, makeup, stained glass and paintings so anyone not working in those fields would be great. You can send me business cards or whatever you have to promote your business. If you are interested, please contact me directly with your name, address and amount of promo materials you think I should send. Thank you!!

Help me find the business productivity tool(s) for my consulting practice! (not Daylite)

Hello Tribe peoples, I am trying to find the tool or tools to run my sustainable business consulting practice, which I started in August, and I've been going a bit nuts with too many choices. I've been looking all over, and am getting near hits, but all "not quite there"s. Highrise sort of works, but has some quirks that that it doesn't hit the mark, and it's missing some of what I want to do. Daylite looks interesting, but...well I'll explain below. Basecamp, same thing. Copper, ditto. Help me find the needle(s) in the haystack!

To give some background, I am a sustainable business consultant who at the moment works solo. I imagine I'll be collaborating with others on some projects, but not necessarily regularly, not as the same company, and definitely not in the same office. I work on a Mac, from my home office. I imagine in my business I'll be working on site at some places.

I asked a friend who knows me well for advice. They said get a tool that works for the near term future. They said that as my business unfolds, it will become clearer what the needs are then, and that I’ll have the funds to take action on any new tools needed. I asked about Daylite, and they said it would be ok, but their sense is there’s something that will work even better, last me longer. I named off others, like Basecamp (doesn’t work enough how I think/work, they said) Copper Project, Contactizer. All No.

They’re bad with names sometimes, but she said she got the hit that it might be something/some company that starts with “Ser...” she also got that it may be a series of interlocking tools, rather then one. I'd agree with that, it seems the invoicing part in the all in one apps is lacking, generally. She had me search on the web, name off what I saw, and these were the maybes, that I in looking at them didn’t get that they would be it:

Zoho
1st Manager
Teamspace
Goplan
Vertabase

When I told them later that they weren't hitting the mark, she said that Daylite might be it, that there is the possibility that what they may have in mind isn’t something that I’ll recognize/believe I’m capable of using yet.

I'm not afraid of something being complex and feature rich, as long as I can make use of some of its capability early on, and grow into it as my practice grows.

Overall, I want project management and CRM in one tool. Daylite seems to be most of the way there, but I'm concerned about its Mac only and software based (as in every user needs to buy it, at $185 a pop) model. If only there were something like it, that was web based. Anybody?

~~~~
That said, I'm looking for some thing or things to do the following:
<> Manage my contacts, and be able to associate emails, files, and tasks with them, make them actionable, rather then just another name/company I have on file.
<> Have a calendar that I can visually see what I (and future collaborators) are up to
<> Organize tasks and steps around projects
<> Day to day tasks, not necessarily around a project (as in not all geared to group collaboration, projects. It covers the “me” things.)
<> Invoicing, time tracking
<> Something to associate the various components of my business together, so information doesn't just get lost in the void, in a place where it's not going to get action taken on it.
<> Be able to collaborate with others on projects, but not require them to have a specific computer platform, or buy expensive software, since we may not work together more then once.
+++
That's what I want to do, and here's the qualities I want in the tool(s) I use:
<> Computer based (no handwriting for me)
<> Friendly, human interface, rather then cold, hard, mechanical
<> Geared to the creative/business minded, but works on a practical level
<> Preferably web based (to allow easier, more malleable collaboration, without need for others to have the same software/platform)
<> If software based, still allows for others in projects that don't have software to get meaningful, actionable information to work on the project.
<> Mac style interface, as in well designed aesthetically and functionally, intuitive to use, robust in features, and useful ones at that.
<> Mac tool integrated, or at least open to any mail client, not Outlook/MS Project/etc linked/dependent. I do have MS Office (Word, Excel) so that’s fine.
So that’s what I’m looking for, I look forward to your suggestions! I imagine for invoicing that I could use Billings, but if your suggestions incorporate it in some other tool, fantastic!
If Business is a numbers game …thin have you looked at the number of members here?
If Business is a numbers game …thin have you looked at the number of members here?
I mean wholly shit …we know our selves and we are our own market, so thin we are the best people to advertise to, we are buyers and sellers of our culture.
How many of you have web site all ready were you sale a product that you create or a site were you charge for a membership, but your product and or services are Non-main stream?
Ok think about it, your on the road and looking for a place a hotel or some thing , thin you remember that you saw a tribe member that had a B&B, you log on and bam you find it , and then you see that if you’re a tribe member you can make a reservation online and when you do a percentage goes to tibe.net, you also know that when you show up all painted in blue with bug eyed sun glasses with a pink tale and a poke-o-dotted turtle under your arm, your not going to get turned away for this is a place for your people you know your home.
Or you find your self in need of a sarong, but the town were you live is not up on the latest fashion, but you saw an ad on tribe were a fellow member who has a shop, so you log on and next thing “Bob’s your uncle” your New sarong is on its way.
Or you’re traveling to Australia and you’re looking for stuff to do but not the normal “shat”, your more of a bohemian so you want to experience the counter culture, again you remember that you saw on tribe a member that offers down to earth back country walk-a-bouts.
Now I could keep going but I think yall get it, but here’s the rube, all this is done with a percentage going back to tribe.net, were only tribe.net members can advertise!
By doing it this way tribe could keep its non-commercial counter culture image, so my question is …..If you could advertise here, would you?
Here is the idea, I just sent Windy whom works here at tride the idea of offering AD space to its members. Yah there is Goggle AD’s, but their for a main stream market.
And the last time I looked yall did not look main stream to me, there are folks here that have clothing design business, holistic centers and so much more. So if it was put to yall the opportunity to help tribe stay counter culture and not go the way of sites like MySpace and others would you?
If so make your comments here, thin I’ll forward it on and just maybe….we as a tribe can be that change we seek…here and in our world.
Best Tribe I have visited in a while -  Questions, feedback, suggestions
Okay. All the advice I have been reading is fantastic. So I hope no one mines if I spill a little a get some feedback.
Here are the basics of my plan for my business.
I have a website that will go live soon.
1)	Blog
2)	Store
Hopefully both will be open December 1st.  On January 1st I will be traveling from west coast to east coast. My hope is that I can find places to set up vendor space where the organizer will take a percentage. I also want to promote the website and just generally have some fun.
Has anyone done anything like this? If yes, how did it work?
Any suggestions? I’m working on a 99 cents store budget
Any ideas on how to find organizers that will take a percentage not a rental fee in different states?
Other?
Hello,
I’m an Entrepreneur and I have some ideas and questions I would like to get feedback, opinions and or suggestions from other Entrepreneurs. I’ve tried opening other businesses and have learned most of the “don’t do that again” lessons. Now I have a soon to open business that I’m very confident will succeed but want to bounce ideas off others.
Background on the business
Two parts to the website
1)	A blog community of 4 women
2)	Online store
Selling
Custom Playa (Burning Man) type clothing / accessories
Thrift store finds that I call Treasure Hunt Treasures
Revamped / reconstructed clothing
Clubbing toys (Neon, LED, blinking items)
I will be traveling from coast to coast for both personal and business. Business promoting the online store and hopefully set up a vendor booth at different events.
I was thinking of having a grand opening give a way kind of contest. However, the server I am using doesn’t allow email newsletter subscriptions. The goal is to get people to my website and grab an RSS feed. I could use Tribe or anther service for newsletters.
The site is still under construction but do you think this could be a good promotion?
anyone had dealings with BMI?
yep, the giant music licensing corporation. I am involved with a small cafe with about 70 seats and have now become large enough to be noticed by BMI. My business partners all agree it's a load of crap and don't want to give them a red cent for their "licensing fees". We play music  mostly by DJ's, International artists and such, and try not to play anything too mainstream.
i am wondering if anyone else on here has had to deal with their shit and if there is any way to get around them?
Any suggestions or comments?
Greetings!
I am trying to move from the print one off invoices in Excel to keeping track of this stuff in a database. I created my customer list, my product list, a couple of forms for easy data entry; now I want to create the invoice.
Without going into the whole story to bore you, does anyone have any ideas, starting points, tutorials to take me through it? I can't seem to find one out there. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.
Thanx for your help.
Hello All,
I'm a new avatar, though I'm not new to Tribe.  I signed on to network with other people in the same general business, shmooze with prospective clients and advertise my services.
However, it seems that the business related tribes are jammed up with gunk.  I see lots of abandoned tribes filled with spam and very little genuine content.  I'm interested in doing something about this.
(It doesn't help that Tribe's own search engine is basically down right now, and one can't search for tribes effectively.)
I believe that a lot of these spam tribes should be simply deleted.  A lot of crappy tribes filled with spam will drive away genuine interest.  I believe I can get some of this clean-up work done, with a little support from other interested tribers.
Please post a response here, or send me a message or a friend request.  Let me know if there is anyone here.
Please post links here if you know of any business-related tribes that are well-moderated and worth spending time in.
Thanks!
Hi Cliff and others,
I have put together a large bid, larger than what I usually deal with and for the first time I am representing a group of people, with higher expertise than me.
This is something that could provide us with work for years to come.
How are such things usually managed? It was sent in last week but I haven't heard from them since. The person in charge was away.
When I finally reached him, he told me that I would get the O.K. in a week but also that he was not the final decision-taker.
I have not been able to reach the final decision-taker and I do not want to come across as frantic but keen.
Any advice?
Any good books on leading negotiations.
One very good piece of advice was to come across as very reassuring and not leave any doubt on the final performance.
Hello,
I'm thinking of changing my business name  only because I feel like the name I came up with just this last week describes it all in 2 words.  I was always "okay" with the one I have now, but this one I'm inlove with! I live in San Francisco so I downloaded the forms. I'm not fully established yet so I think I'm okay since I filed my biz name this past March.
Has anyone out there changed the name of their business that's filed? Was it a total hassle?
I would like to know your thoughts and/or hear your experiences with this.
Thanks,
I am interested in what people have going for businesses or business ideas.
I am opening an online coffee distribution business.  I work for an amazing roaster right now and I'm finishing up in a couple of weeks.  I am moving then to Oregon... this is partly due to how easy it is to have a business in OR and how little regulation there is for such a business.
What are you guys doing?  How is it going for you?
I run an art supply store, and have alot of difficulty finding reputable vendors for alot of the merchandise i want to carry, especially with some of the more specialized materials, like encaustic paints, waxes (both as binders, and for candling), and different clay and sculpture materials that the big name vendors dont carry. Internet searches have proved to be very unhelpful.
Have any other small retailers  run in to this? How have you worked around it?
I often feel like there is some big directory that i should know about.
Hello I'm new to the tribe and very new to owning my own business.  Prior Biz Dev Mgr at HP in Silicon Valley now gone
wind tunnel owner...
It's a totally cool, safe and INCREDIBLE business to experience human flight WITHOUT the danger of skydiving!  Check us out at: www.iFlySFBay.com   We fly everyone 3yrs to 93yrs!
Here's the question...how do I promote it in the internet space?  MySpace?  Google Ad's, Yahoo postings?  Mass emails?
I am working on a limited budget (like everyone I know...) planning printed ads, news events for the launch, VIP tours, etc but am really not sure about what the "best practices" are for internet publicity?
Any ideas?
Thank you,  Kent Sessions
So, I have designed a product. It’s a nitch market item that I designed simply to make my life easier, but now I am thinking that I should consider developing it.
I am not sure under what conditions a patent is advisable (this is a really simple design), or what steps to take at all as far as contacting a manufacturer, and getting things rolling. I am going to go down to the local SBA for starters but if anyone has launched a project like this I would love to hear from you.
I am NOT endorsing, recommending, or suggesting this site - in fact - I'm very suspicious of this kind of information and I was wondering if anyone knows what the general concept behind a program like this is.  I've heard of many people say "taxes are illegal" - but it sure seems to me like they are part of the law.  I was in a bit of a disagreement with someone about this and so I guess I thought I might try to see if there is something I really am unaware of.
Do they exist for individuals wanting to start or purchase a small business (retail)?
How does one find them without paying someone who specializes in grant searces?
I have found lots for organizations, agricultural, Indian, education, disaster etc.
SBA has loan programs and very limited grants for individuals which are geared toward growing a business that is alredy owned and established by the individual.
Thanks in advance for the suggestions.
I've been a computer programmer since 1998. In my spare time over the past few years I've developed a reasonably unique piece of software with a wide range of applications. This is not a "get rich quick" plan, it is a solid customer-oriented business for the right person who can attract funding and manage a sales team. Please contact me off-list for a six-page document explaining the statement of benefit. Please note that I am not a sales person, so I am expecting a partner who can refine this and other sales materials to present to investors and clients and plan the business.
A warning: When sued be careful
When your corporation is sued do not assume that you may defend it just because it's yours.
In many states NJ among them:   No person may put any papers before a court or make any appearance on behalf of a corporation except a licensed lawyer.
The Way this works out is:
You have a limited time to answer a complaint. So you do and you do it pro se because it's too small to be worth the $5 or $10 Gees an attorney will cost you.
So you answer the Complaint, serving it on the plaintiff or their lawyer.
The time to answer expires and suddenly the Plaintiff is moving for a default judgment against your corporation because you never answered.
But you did you did  you insist.  NOPE~!!   Not if there's a local rule that prohibits the pro se representation of a corporation you are shit out of luck.  Your answer is unacceptable and doesn't count. The other guy  gamed you and played the game of rules better 'n you.
In NJ, that rule  addresses the unauthorized practice of law and it's a hard rule.
In theory the court could cut you a break and give you some period to go get a lawyer  but  - - do you really want to risk it??
How to market an itty bitty business?
Hi!  I have a small design/crafting business creating costumes for belly dancers.  My website (which I created myself, by the way) is http://www.auralynne.com  It's part time now, and I'd like to make it full time.  Trouble is, none of the normal marketing techniques will work for me since my range of possible customers is so limited.  I've discovered tribe.net is a great place for getting the word out.  When I make a new batch of hairpieces for ebay, I'll post a photo and a blurb about them in several tribes where belly dancers like to hang out.  Best part is, it's free!
I know there are dancers outside of tribe.net, possibly even dancers that do internet outside of tribe.net.  I did once write an article for a bellydance magazine where I plugged my product.  Got a grand total of one customer from that.  I've also made a couple of squidoo lenses, which show that they're getting hits, which is good.  Anyone have any ideas that might help me?  I prefer things that take time rather than cost money, since I have much more of the former.
Training seminars
I have an effective workbook and training method for training the fashion industry on computer graphics. I have trained many dozens of individuals with this method in group and individual sessions. My material is good and it does work.
So, now I would like to start offering training seminars, but am unsure of where to start. My market is professionals in the fashion industry and fashion school students. Potential clients who aren't familiar with my work said they would pay $75 for a one day (6 hours) seminar. With 10 people that is only $750, not quite worth it. People who are familiar with me would pay $200 for a one day seminar with no more than 6 people (if it didn't cover material they've already seen). A bit better. My ideal is a dozen people for $200 all day (with breaks, and lunch provided). Saturdays are identified as the best day for individuals. Companies have wanted half day workshops during the week, onsite for under $500 and I can sell books and CDs to individuals.
- Do I have to put up all the money up front, booking a room, buying computers, software and then hoping that people will sign up? Maybe I could offer "bring your own laptop" workshops?
- Are there companies that offer the rooms/computers that I can rent to host my seminar?
- I would like to publish my tutorials in a book method, and I would use something like lulu.com and hope to sell them at the seminar and/or provide them at the seminar.
- How should I price this?
- How should I get the fees from them?
- Do I ask for all the money up front?
- Do I offer refunds if they cancel? If they had an emergency and didn't show up?
- Do I overbook, just in case?
- Should I offer it in Vegas for the LA crowd and Reno for the SF crowd?
- Are there other fees that I just haven't thought about?
- Is this even a viable money-making industry?
- Is this not an end in itself business, but rather a "giveaway" for some other product/service that I am not thinking of?
- I have enough  material to offer a variety of seminars... should I offer a selection?
- Is there some other way I can use this mterial to make a living that I haven't thought of? I hear there's no money in publishing, especially not books.
How to begin?
I'm a private music teacher and I have all of these great games that I made and my students love them. I've decided that it's time to make them pretty and try to market them.  I haven't the faintest idea on how to start.  Should I try to sell to local music stores? Do I try to contact toy companies?  I know I could start by selling to my students.
Since I basically sell education, I've never had to market a physical object. Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
My husband has been doing some free lance design on the side (mainly brochures, business cards, etc) and wants to do this full time, for himself.  He is taking classes on web design and will eventually be doing this as well.  He has put me in charge of figuring out all of the details such as should we register the business, finding an accountant/cpa that might be able to give us some advice, should he start an LLC, etc.  Does anyone have any recommendations on where I can start looking for this info?  We currently live in Georgia but are planning a move to Florida once we sell the house.  Would it matter if he does business in various states?  In the past he has just received a 1099 and we just  owe taxes when we do our personal taxes.  He hasn't been making enough for us to change this but once he starts this up, he will hopefully be making a lot more.  Also, he will be working from home at the beginning.
Thanks for any advice!!
I just sent in my application to register my business. Yaaay! But how does one know when to leave their normal, everyday job? i'm starting a yoga business and getting teaching opps. i've also saved money.  In a way, I want to stay a little longer so i can save even more but this week I've been itching to get out of this M-F 9-5 crap.
Any comments are welcome.
Thanks,
Sold the business.
The family business has been sold to a much larger company after 19 years trading. We have been sold to a much larger firm and in a couple of weeks we’ll all be working for the new company. Effectively, we are going into liquidation, which just sounds awful. I see it as an achievement as we have been able to realise our investment, and also we must look an attractive package to the new firm, or else they wouldn’t have bought us over.
So, I won’t be developing a small business anymore but a much larger one instead. However, I really want to remain a member here on this tribe. My boyfriend is setting up his own business at the moment, so we will still be needing advice from time to time!
S Corporation is a totally separate entity?
Back in my favorite tribe with a question...   A long time ago I was asking about incorporating.  It seems that for my purposes the tax advantages of an S-corporation (because I would then avoid the Self Employment Tax which is twice the amount of normal tax) seemed the wisest way to go.
So - I think I understand the idea - but I want to make sure....   For about 10 years now I've done Schedule C's which listed all my expenses (employee payments, costs of equipment etc. etc. etc.).  From the time I incorporate - I would suddenly keep a very very simple 1040 for myself and all the write offs would go onto a totally separate tax submission?  So, essentially, the corporation is it's own person which I now have to do taxes for in addition to my own.
Then - the corporation pays me... but in order to do that I need to have a payroll company?  That payroll company could also pay my employees if I so choose (if I want to have worker's comp for example).
As for liability.... It seems like the LLC provides more liability protection - is that true?  Does the S corporation provide any?
Does anyone have some basic figures of what it costs (in addition to the 800/ year minimum in tax) to run the S corporation.
What about my car?  I mostly drive for business.  I walk for personal things - so I'm like 70% business driving.  Does that go on my S corporation taxes or my own taxes?  If my own, would I be back to Schedule C or would the Schedule A(?) or some other one let me take tohse off.
Can I rent a portion of my home to the S corporation instead of doing the home business form on the schedule C?  Does that seem odd to the IRS if I'm paying rent myself and then renting to the company?
Thanks!
Cooperative Business Development
I am on the board of a newly forming cooperative grocery and am looking for folks on Tribe (or tribes) that have experience with such entities, particularly in the startup phase. For folks who are not familiar, a cooperative is a business which is organized in accordance with basic principles of democratic control, member benefit, education and community give-back. These are not charities but real businesses (usually not-for-profit or profit corporations) that organize differently.
Does anyone here have experience and recommended resources for such things? I am familiar with such things as the CGIN website, the Co-Op 500 and so on, but am curious if there are other tribesters who have been blooded in this particular arena since some things (such as member loans, share pricing, governance and so on) seem to be particular and peculiar to cooperatives. Any suggestions or feedback?
Hi everyone,
I've been teaching (private music lessons) at the same rates for 2 years now, and I want to raise my rates. I am sending a letter out to my clients this week, but I need help. Any links to a sample, or just some advice on what to write? How detailed do I have to get about why I am raising the fees? This is my first time doing this so I don't really know what to do. Thanks in advance for your help.
Five Top Tips for Starting Your Business
1. Define your business by writing a detailed business plan.
I'm amazed at how many people continue to start and/or operate a business without one. Then they wonder why they are failing. Guess what's more amazing. Business owners who think they can attract investors without this important step.
2. Find a mentor or two.
You can ask an old buddy or call a local office of S.C.O.R.E. or a Small Business Development Center. Get trained and take classes from a veteran in your field. You really need someone to be honest enough to "smack you up the side of the head" when you are out of touch with your market. Check your ego at the door and get an expert's help.
3. Get business insurance.
We are such a litigious society, that it's become a requirement of doing business. You're a consultant and you think you don't need it? Come on! Who knows how someone will interpret your omission of key information, even if it occurred after the fact? Cover yourself. Get insured.
4. Network, network, network.
Join the local Chamber, business clubs and national associations. No one ever became rich in a vacuum. No matter what your age, gender or business model, you need to listen to and talk to others to bounce ideas and share resources. Besides, you'll save yourself a ton of legwork if you know who and what to ask. And you might even find a future business partner. Imagine that!
5. Share your knowledge with others.
Give back to the community. Speak at conferences and local business meetings. Spend time with an undergraduate business student or even a high schooler involved in Junior Achievement. It's what good citizens do. If you can't do it for others, do it for yourself. You never know when someone you help today will be in a position to help you tomorrow.
software for artists question.
A friend told me about thia software for Artists.
Workingartist ----  $99.00 -- www.workingartist.com/
they will send you free a partially limited cd (which you can obtain full features by buying it and getting your password.
I got it. It looks like it does a lot, expecially if you have a large inventory of handmade items.
It does not do the accounting but keeps track of all your inventory.
Anyone using this?
Is there something better?
I'd like to hear some comments.
thanks.
small claims court - who do I sue?
I've called the small claims court people twice now and they were not able to answer this relatively simple question.
I was hired to do some work by a woman who has her own company.  She was hiring for another, larger company.  After over 100 emails and going way beyond what I specified I would do - they ended up not paying.  Now, the invoice information I was given was for the larger company.  However, in discussion she made a personal guarantee that I would be paid.  Now - apparently, eventhough everyone else has been paid, she is also owed money by these people.  Not my problem.  My problem is that I'm  owed a small claims amount of money and armed with a witness who will testify and my 100 pages of emails detailing the fact that this work was very much done for hire - I am going to sue.
The questions I can't get a straight answer on are:
1.  who
2.  where
I would think I'd sue the woman because she hired me.  But I was asked to invoice the larger company.  The court phone line at first said sue the woman, secondly said sue both and let the judge decide.  At first they said must be filed in the defendant's area, second time they said could be filed where the work was performed (not local to the larger company) - we're all in California though.
Anyone have any thoughts or experience which would clarify this?
Oh - the woman actually has said I definitely am owed the money - but insists I'm owed it only by the larger company.
Thanks.
Because I deal mainly with languages, I have not purchased Excell yet.
A research on Google reveals many free softwares that could fulfill the same role for a small company.
Any idea on one that works well.
AGLOCO - New Free $$$ Opportunity...a must see!
Hello Fellow Entrepreneurs:
You don’t often hear from me, but when you do, you usually receive very useful information related to the growth of your business. And sometimes I offer you an opportunity for improving your financial situation.
I have two such opportunities to send your way. The first one is in this newsletter. And in a few days, I’ll be sending you the second opportunity.
Please read what’s below with earnest care – as I did when I received a similar message from Gary Ambrose.
I just joined a new company called AGLOCO that is changing the way regular users -- like you and me -- are rewarded for their use of the Internet. Instead of just a couple people making all the money while users get nothing, AGLOCO rewards its members for using the Internet like they always do.
One feature I really like is that the early people who help build the company get greater rewards (which is why I am sending you this email). Click on this link to go directly to AGLOCO (with my member id# BBBB6705) and join my network
http://burkeshire-reports.com/agloco
It's free and easy to join -- so don't miss out on this new company.
I joined when I received the following email from Gary Ambrose:
“A new company, Agloco, launched just about a day ago, and it has the potential to be even larger than the company it was originally based on.
The original company, AllAdvantage, reportedly paid out over $100,000,000.00 in commissions ( that's one-hundred million dollars ), to its membership of over 10,000,000 ( that's ten million ) members.
How'd they do those numbers?
Here's the short version ... Basically, you downloaded an AdBar that displayed advertisements when you surfed online. The advertisers paid the company, the company paid you a part of the ad revenue and you got paid by the hour for just surfing with the AdBar turned on.
Throw in 5 levels of referrals, all paying out a portion of surfing revenue earned ... and you can see how this became hyper viral.
The problem, and why the company fell apart back then was due to a lack of advertising revenue. This was around the time of the dot-com bust ... bad timing.
This time around online advertising is actually proven, technology is light-years ahead of what it once was, and the online marketplace as a whole is bigger than it has ever been.
In the late 1990's into 2000 I was paid several thousand dollars as an AllAdvantage member ... and I got in nearly 6 months after it launched.
The first time, I hesitated .... I'm not making that mistake again. It's free, no-risk, and has absolutely huge potential. I hope you'll join me as a member of Agloco.
Thanks & Good Luck,
Gary Ambrose”
Well, what more can I say? I recommend you follow this link and sign up. It’s free and so new the AdBar isn’t even ready for use yet. So, click here and get started:
http://burkeshire-reports.com/agloco
Cheers for now,
Vitae
