What makes you scared? Given our world climate situation, given our increased # of diseases, and food risks, given our alarming rate of weight gain the US, and given the presidency of the last 8 years, does anything in particular shake you in your boots? Does it start as anger, and end as fear? Or the other way around.

I'll start.
What makes me scared is that we will eat this planet to death in the next 50 years. What scares me is the growing # of abandoned children due to overpopulation. What scares me is growing old, and not finding a partner that wants to adopt.

What makes me angry is how complacent western society has become, and not demanded more thoroughly an alternative to oil consumption for cars.
What makes me angry is when I am generalized by those who don't want to know my thoughts further, but prefer to judge.
What makes me angry is when others will say "Let me just triple check."

**PS, I know its alot, but its sooooo valuable, please read entire thing!!***************
__________________________________________________________________

Dear Golden Gate Audubon members and volunteers:

After the devastating oil spill yesterday, Golden Gate Audubon is interested in helping to put volunteer energy into aiding oiled birds. We are looking for leaders to take volunteers to areas and document any oiled birds or mammals and report this information to the Oiled Wildlife Care Network.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES should people touch or approach an oiled animal unless they have HAZWOPER training and are properly equipped. If you see someone doing this, please remind them that this is highly toxic material (the oil is not motor oil but fuel oil).

Calls from the general public wanting to volunteer outnumbered oiled bird reports yesterday by about five to one. Volunteer opportunities for untrained members of the public are very limited currently but here's a critical need: please make a special effort to look for oiled birds in places where the general public doesn't go. Don't approach or touch the birds, but call the Oiled Wildlife Care Network at (877) 823-6926 and provide information on the attached form. The faster they can get these birds stabilized and washed, the higher their chances of recovery and survival.

Golden Gate Audubon is looking for people to lead small groups of volunteers to monitor and report any oiled birds to the OWCN. Things we need our volunteer leaders to do:

- Identify the species and location of birds along San Francisco Bay (form provided)

- Use binoculars and spotting scope if you have one

- Use their own cell phone or home phone to report birds to the Oiled Wildlife Care Network

- If you have GPS, please use it to help pinpoint the location of birds

- Photograph birds or marine mammals if possible and save to associate with data sheets

San Francisco locations where leaders are needed:

I started an "Anti-Sweatshop, Pro-Style tribe" (feel free to join if you're interested!) and I posted the following topic there today. Since we Women Evil Geniuses are dedicated to creating a Better Tomorrow, I figure I should post it here, too...

Living sweatshop-free is hard. I've complained time and time again that most sweatshop-free clothing is not "mainstream" fashion. What about those of us who are passionately against sweatshops but who don't want to wear hemp parkas? I recently started giving up hope, but I thought I'd give it another try. So I did some research and here's what I've come up with for sweatshop-free clothing that won't make you feel like everyone's staring at you:

1) Lucky Brand Jeans
www.luckybrandjeans.com/
The Good News: More mainstream clothing. Not my style, personally, but a refreshing change from a lot of the other stuff I've seen.
The Bad News: They're owned by Liz Claiborne, which has been involved in a series of of sweatshop lawsuits. So, if a line of clothing is sweatshop-free, but the bigger company that owns them isn't, does that make it bad? I guess that's a personal decision...

2) Carlisle Collection (I haven't been able to find any "dirt" on them, but that doesn't mean they're sweatshop-free.)
www.carlislecollection.com/
The Good News: They have clothing that is business-world appropriate.
The Bad News: It looks like you have to buy their clothes from a consultant, and I get the feeling they're really pricey.

3) Ted Baker
www.tedbaker.com/
The Good News: They're sweatshop-free, and they have a store finder on their website, where you can find stores in the US.
The Bad News: The pricing on the website is in pounds, and it's expensive. Hopefully the US prices aren't so high...but I doubt it.

4) Soul-Flower
www.soul-flower.com/
The Good News: They're sweatshop-free and affordable. They have a lot of fun, casual clothes.
The Bad News: Most of it isn't work-friendly...that is, depending on your job.

I hope this helps anyone who is looking. If you have more suggestions, please share!

I am masturbating with pictures of the White House in front of me and creating a Sex Poltergeist to haunt the Bush administration. I intend to aim every orgasm I have for the next week at George Bush and his cabinet. May they drown in desire until it takes over their every waking thought, may the Sex Poltergeist infect everyone in the White House with primal lust until the sex scandal for this administration that finally breaks out in the media... makes that moment with the blowjob in the Clinton administration look pretty fucking tame indeed.

Yes, I realize I'm karmically asking for trouble here... the karmic backlash of this action might keep me mad with desire for the rest of my life. So be it, I'll take one for the team and trust that the sex I have for the rest of this mortal life will be excellent.

Do whatever you feel inspired to in terms of adding to this project, I think we should hit them with lust bombs....

And don't forget to aim your orgasms at trouble spots all over the world, too, fuck your sweetie on a map of the world, for example. Rub your orgasmic juices all over Ireland on a map, spray a load onto Iraq, etc. You get the idea, participate as much or as little as you feel inspired.
Hello, ladies!

I've been giving some thoughtful time to my noggin lately on why I hear from some _few_ women online about cultural questions.

I know lots of cool women. We talk about it over coffee, the phone, crafting, walking, hiking, and even hot tubbing.

So I wanted to create another space for us to keep rapping about things that we observe that is making an impact in our tomorrows. Cars, family, parents getting older, friends and the changes we see there, etc. You know?

It can seem like a handful! So feel free to share anything in particular~ I am very curious about how the Modern Woman fares among the seas of Life.
I've never reached that point, but I have some ideas on where mine is.

If my life was in danger, I would be physically violent to protect myself. If the life of someone I love was in danger, I would be physically violent to protect them.

If someone raped my sister, my mother, my best friends, I would want to cut his dick off. But would I actually do it? I'm not sure.

At what point would you reach violence? Have you been there? What is it like?

(Promise... I posted this for you because we needed a topic, and because I find it interesting.)

I will post about ideas for things to do, but the DATE is often more challenging than the activitiy, and will help determine what we CAN do. My calendar, at present, is a bit scarey.

But, I have the evenings of Monday, April 17, Wed. April 19 and Thurs. April 20 free if my mom and sister can come along. Or I can do something on Sunday, April 23. I am free on Monday night, April 24, or I could do something during the day on Saturday April 29 or Sunday April 30. That's my availability.

I know it won't be possible that everyone will have the same free days, but what works for you? Do you prefer and evening after work, or would you like a weekend daytime activity? Let me know - April approaches and a better tomorrow awaits!

Your feelings are exactly that=YOURS.

Last night, I was trying to explain to someone that they “hurt my feelings, but I understood how at the time that my feelings were colored by a need that couldn’t be met by anyone else.”

In my effort to share my experience of how I perceive things, my friend only heard…”YOU hurt my feelings, blah blah, blah blahdy blah”

Fascinating. He flew off the handle, got defensive, and we had to hug in the end, each of us saying something utterly inane like “I still love you anyway.”

I couldn’t get him to understand at all what I was talking about. How did this happen? I was trying to explain that he doesn’t, couldn’t EVER, actually own my feelings. But he heard what he was programmed to hear, “IT’S YOUR FAULT”
For instance:
I am good at creating good spaces, telling stories, baking, singing, looking after myself, knowing when to stop (insert situation here), recognizing fate, and paying attention, at nearly all times. I am good with polite conversation/table manners, customer service, hauling heavy things, trying new stuff, asking lots of questions. Pesky probing questions. I stay in touch with friends, even if they are flaky. I am extremely devoted.

I am *not* good at always listening, being patient, pushing myself, compromising, ballet, cooking, gardening, and acrobatics. I am sometimes inconsiderate to my friends, though I may not catch it right away. I am not good with heights, or people who rush me. I do not argue well. I am not good at politics;understanding them, or being interested in them. I am not good with people who complain a lot. I am extremely devoted, which can make me blind.

There was this moment years ago when I was sitting, sipping a glass of wine, writing in my journal at this poetry reading in Portland, OR. It was Cafe Lena's and many of my friends were testing the literary waters at this open mike. Up walked this bold red-head, asking me if I was going to read tonight, talking to me about what she was going to read, and asking if I'd like to go shoot pool with her sometime. I thought she was coming on to me.

We exchanged numbers and saw one another at the readings weekly. We became friends. Then we weren't friends. There was an echo in the world when we walked away from one another.

I'd drive by her apartment, her work, the cafe's we would go to together. I would go for long walks thinking about the awful things we had said to each other. I'd think about the times we laughed together. I'd cry.

One morning I decided it was over. This world and this life is not meant to hold onto the hurts, we're here for the healing. So with my best summer dress and straw hat, I walked into her work, walked right up to her with the biggest grin on my face ever. She stopped dead in her tracks. Poor girl- she didn't know what hit her. We talked, we hugged, and over the years, we've gotten better about disagreeing.

She is my love, my life, my sister, my best friend. Today I honor her in my heart, miles away, saying thank you a million times for her place in this world. She makes tomorrow and today a better place.
'Pockets' of women may miss breast cancer wonder drug: oncologist
Last Updated Thu, 20 Oct 2005 18:42:06 EDT
CBC News
Herceptin is highly effective against an aggressive form of breast cancer that tends to strike younger women, but some may not know they could benefit.

Thursday's issue of the New England Journal of Medicine confirms Herceptin (Trastuzumab) can cut the risk of cancer recurrence in half, and prolong life for women with advanced breast cancer.

The drug works against HER-2 positive breast cancer. In Canada, it affects at least 3,000 women a year, or about 20 per cent of breast cancer cases.

FROM MAY 13, 2005: Breast cancer treatment hailed as 'breakthrough'

Nathalie Le Prohon, 43, is one of them. "I have two young children, 12 and seven," said Le Prohon, who began taking Herceptin in July after completing chemotherapy. "To double my chances of survival in my case means a lot."

Le Prohon said access to the testing that determines whether women have HER-2 positive cancer is an issue.

"There are pockets within provinces, particularly rural areas outside academic centres, where we have information that not everybody gets HER-2 tested," agreed Dr. Joseph Ragaz, director of oncology at McGill University Health Centre.

Given the published evidence on Herceptin's effectiveness, HER-2 testing should be automatic for every women diagnosed with breast cancer, Ragaz said.

Le Prohon got her first two infusions of Herceptin in the U.S. before her home province of Ontario agreed to provide the treatments, in July.

Most women across Canada now have access to the drug, which costs about $40,000 a year per patient, depending on weight.

Some provinces provide it on a case-by-case basis. In Newfoundland and Labrador, so far it is available only for women with advanced cancer.
Grocery chain pulls Seventeen magazine because of vagina info:

Albertsons stores in Oregon and other states have removed copies of the October Seventeen magazine from its shelves due to concerns about an article titled "Vagina 101."

The article discusses yeast and urinary tract infections, vaginal discharge and pubic hair. It also has a detailed illustration of female genitalia and small photographs of two vaginal areas with the caption: "These are both normal."

Danielle Killpatrick, public affairs director for Albertsons division in Oregon, said the Boise-based company pulled the magazine from 2,500 stores. She declined to give other details but said, "This has certainly gotten a lot of media attention."

In a statement, Seventeen defended the article.

"Seventeen reports on every aspect of our readers' lives, including health and body issues, which our readers write to us about frequently. They see this magazine as a trusted friend, so we talk about subjects that are important to them in an open and objective way and provide basic information and resources for them to find out more." -- Gabrielle Glaser

As recent as the last couple of years, I've now had 2 close girlfriends, and 2 other not as close, pursue the following:

A) Find a man, one that they are attracted to physically, but not necessarily matched with emotionally
B) Marry him, or settle down and commit
C) Lead this man into believing she is in Love with him (conscious deceit)
D) So they don't have to worry anymore about paying bills, taking care of their young, car payments, pay student loans (popular one), or finding the One, etc.

Literally, these women are telling me that they are done "surviving", and that they "can't take it anymore". So they are basically netting a man who will provide for them at the cost of an authentic relationship. ( I know, I have alot of judgement here...)

I am not saying that relationships are not mutually beneficial. Many of us, who love each other, use each other for our strengths, and as long as it's understood or at least reciprocal, then I get it. The word 'use' to me doesn't always have a negative connotation.

But this seems really fucked up to me. What's with the free ride? This isn't sustainable behavior! How can these women think that eventually, the guy won't find out, and be devastated!?

Thoughts, ladies? What kind of behavior is this? Have you ever done this? What do you think is the inevitable future for any children involved?

Am I seriously crazy for thinking that love can be bigger, more complex, and more honest than all that?

Do couples mostly get together, or stay together these days, just to avoid being alone?

Do any of you actually enjoy being alone, or do you endure it?

I pose the following question~

When in your life, has a strange woman come to your rescue? Some one unexpected, who has helped you in some day-altering way? Or, when have you offered that to a woman in need?

I am not talking about friends. Or the occasional spare change for a homeless mother, though they are often worthy. I am talking about something that you still remember, months or years later. And if you haven't, why don't you try it sometime?

My own example-
At the Temple Burn at Burning Man this year (Which is a quiet and meditative release of alot of emotional baggage, in short--by the way, I _seriously_ just underspoke of it's reverence and value to thousands, but you kind of have ta be there...) I released several letters, poems, and drawings of my father, who passed away in December, and I had a tumultuous relationship with, at the best of times. I was curled over in the fetal position, howling and racked with sobs.We are talking outer limits here, people. I was in a space I'd never been in my life, and I am not anxious to return to.

A completely strange woman, and her boyfriend, came over and held me and rocked me. They steadied my breathing. They stayed with me. Slowly, we looked up at each other. We were all soaked with tears.
And I've written an EPIC thank you letter to her, and she is now on my Tribe friends. I hope to know her more and more. But in at least one long instant that lasted and lasted, we imprinted on each other the need of a stranger to hold us. To steady us. To stay, with us.

Hallelujah, to strange and evil women!

Today I remembered an article I read a few years back (I think in Utne Reader) about an exhibit in New York by a femal artist which I think was called "Truism". If I remembered well she had rented quite a few poster space etc and posted on them truisms.
I remember two:

"sometimes fathers hit too hard" and "abuse of power comes as no surprise".
In the last year of my grad work I had actually made a T-shirt (just a white T-shirt and a perrmanent black marker) with that truism during a struggle between faculty and grad students.

I was dreaming of doing something like this in my town (but there is no way I can afford to rent most of the poster space in town) with my own truisms.
Something like:
"some children want to die"
"right now a child is dying alone"
"I don't know the name of my neighboor"

Wouldn't it be nice to be able to rent all the poster space for a week or so and use it to post truisms.

Just a dream that I wanted to share.

by the way english is not my first language so bear with me and my "original" spelling and my awkward grammar.

Sooo. I took myself to lunch the other day, and grabbed a Bay Guardian, because I've already read the new Harry Potter, and everthing after that for a few months seems so blah.

As I was flipping through, I was astounded to see an ad for Marina Optics (?, need to check that on the clipping at home) that said,
"The evolution of the Marina Woman"

Let me see if I can describe it,
I was a cartoon, with three frames of the evolution of the Modern Woman:
It showed a woman in the first frame, slumped over and dressed down, ponytail hair, wearing glasses and looking like someone had taken the cayenne pepper out of her Indian Food. ( My way of saying she looked bummed *OUT)

The next frame was a woman who had dressed up,hair down and longer, and was wearing makeup, with a dog, a boyfriend, and more importantly to the ad people, sexier glasses.

The next frame showed the same woman with a husband, pushing a baby cart, dressed to the NINES, long air-flowy hair, with no glasses whatsoever.Talking on a cell phone.

This ad is the kind of thing that makes me stop and wonder what we are all racing towards in our lives.I mean, obviously the quote evolution end quote of a typical woman who lives at the Marina is supposed to be sexier, confident, empowered, loved, and bearing kids, all according to these folks.

And I don't necessarily think of those things as bad. But something about this ad really struck me as wrong. As though it is my 'duty' to behave that way, all the time.

Annnyywayy.

Just sharing.

If we believe everthing we read in the news its no wonder we closet ourselves up inside with our toys and pat ourselves on the back for being a great country. Michael Moore covered this in Bowling for Columbine - about how the US has developed in to a country that is scared. The TV whitewashes our brains.

I wish we could do more to make the media less biased (take out Murdoch?) and go back to a time when stories were less biased and more informative. Where people were educated about issues and not just shown flashy pictures. I'd love to know how we could do this..any ideas? Is it an education thing? If we educate our kids to ask questions will they demand more information?
Ok, I know that most of you are younger but I really could use some advise. I am 41 and have reached my "stuff dreams" of a house and paid off cars and a new bedroom set! I have worked my ass off for 18yrs to get to this point and now that I am here I am happy about being here but....what do I look forward to now? I feel like I am stuck, not knowing how to proceed, what to focus on. I feel soooo blessed that I am at a point right now that I have so many chooses but I'm so confused and frustrated.

Cheers!
