I have a friend in the SCA in Virginia that has been a Member since 1983. She has held Kngdom offices and even started Offices in new Kingdoms. So she Offered to be the Chatelaine in a new canton wich she did. Then when the Local Baronial Chatelaine was stepping down..she applied for the position...Never heard back, So at canton meeting the baronial seneshall was asked about it. He said..now get this...
" We would rather have a centrally located Castellan with in the Barony..not an Outskirts Chatelain..so as better to serve our needs:: WHATTT????
So does this mean to be KIng of a Kingdom only, "Centrally Located" Populace can fight in a tourney ?
Or maybee all the Guild masters and Masters and Mistresses of the pelicans and Laurals who do not live Centrally located to the kingdom should GIVE UP their Possitions to a more Geographical person.
Man this Club is getting rediculous.

Re: The most ridiculous thing I ever hear :::Latley:::!!!
Fri, June 29, 2007 - 8:03 AMWelcome to SCA politics. Sounds like either A) the Baronial officer had someone else in mind, or B) didn't want to have a subordinate officer with more experience/contacts/"juice" than they have. Or maybe they are not a good match personality/working style wise. If you think about it it's knida hard to get really worked up about not getting a volunteer position that comes with a lot of headaches (says the former Canton Seneschal).
After re-reading your post it sounds like somebody doesn't want new kids in the sandlot who could challenge the status quo.

Re: The most ridiculous thing I ever hear :::Latley:::!!!
Fri, June 29, 2007 - 8:07 AMWilliam,
I'm not from your area or Kingdom but I think your making a huge leap here. The keeper of the "stuff" versus running the kingdom is quite different officers and duties. I CAN see someone making this statement innocently & but not meant the way you apparently took it?
I know for a fact that most of our kingdoms Royalty has NOT been centrally located within our geographical borders. Simply because that isn't possible when you look at the geographical centers versus the population centers which are to the north and the south in the kingdom and there are complete areas that have no shires and no claim on the lands and the members within them. Some offices make sense to be centrally located so as to make travle easier. Some are not as importantna if the officers are willing to travel farther and haul more "stuff". -

Re: The most ridiculous thing I ever hear :::Latley:::!!!
Fri, June 29, 2007 - 9:25 AMWell maybe.
I just think that somone who was able to run a whole kingdom office..Not just "Keeper of the stuff," This Included, Security at events,Parking,Site cleaning afterwords,Paperwork and many other duties between helping with Outside security at event dealing with mudane things.Opposed to ,Getting and helping new members and doing demos..is a differt can of worms..I have been both a Castellan and a Constable and Constable or Sherrif is a far more dmanding job ,now concider it as a kingdom wide job with no computers only hand written missives.compared to a Baoronial position with a computer. Ther is no contest.
It seems to me it was just a pass up do to somthing else..I dont know..Just live the dream for me and I like to see fair play.

Re: The most ridiculous thing I ever hear :::Latley:::!!!
Fri, June 29, 2007 - 10:41 AMCan she realistically transport the 20 some totes we have locally in our shire of "stuff"? Isn't that what the office entails? Or am I confused (again)? now I can only imagine what a barony "stuff" consists of. Can she transport it to every event it's required? Are there other more "legitimate" reasons? Why do you care? In 20 years will it make a difference to any of us or our socially challenged behavior? Probably not.
From a totally different group (although I see parrallels) I see tendencies for people of "rank" to not let others do a certain job as they feel no one else can do the job adequately therefore no one else ever learns the job. Sometimes you gotta let the newbies do something! Especially if you've got newbies willign to do or learn the job. -

Sat, June 30, 2007 - 6:01 AMUsually one never finds their true talents untill one is under pressure to perform thoes duties. So with this thinking one would need to, especially if they want to, try out their wings, so to speak!

Sat, June 30, 2007 - 6:24 AMI'm a Castellan in Virginia, and I most certainly live on the "outskirts" of my Shire. Just out of curiosity, which group was it? Send it to me in a private message if you don't want to post it publicly. -

Re: The most ridiculous thing I ever hear :::Latley:::!!!
Mon, July 2, 2007 - 7:42 AMi am on the outskirts of my very large shire and at one time held an office or two. And nobody had a problem with me being on the 'outskirts' i just stopped doing it cause it was so expensive in gas and the politics were irritating.

Re: The most ridiculous thing I ever heard :::Lately:::!!!
Tue, July 3, 2007 - 6:48 PMWow, This story makes a lot more sense if we fill it in with the first person narrtive that it really SHOULD have.
As William (grammer corrected):
"I have been a Member since 1983. I have held Kngdom offices and even started Offices in new Kingdoms. So, I offered to be the Castellan in a new canton, which I did. Then, when the local Baronial Chatelaine was stepping down, I applied for the position. Never heard back. So, at the canton meeting, I asked the baronial seneschal about it. He said..now get this...
" We would rather have <someone active throughout the Barony, not just in their local group. The Chatelaine needs to work throughout the Barony,> so as better to serve our needs." :: WHATTT????
So does this mean to be KIng of a Kingdom ...
From Angus:
Yes - to be a King/Queen, you should be prepared to travel THROUGHOUT the kingdom. If not, then don't fight in crown. To be a good Chatelaine/Castellan, you should be travelling throughout the Barony - to practices, demos, etc. You are the primary recruiter. You SHOULD be making yourself available for newcomers everywhere, not just your local area. You should NOT be recruiting for your personal household. You should NOT be telling stories of how you get people drunk to our newcomers, especially underage newcomers. You should NOT be mis-representing yourself. And, you should NOT be changing stories to gain support of outside influences, and get the "sympathy vote".
The Castellan/Chatelaine is often the first face newcomers see. They need to represent all of the ideals of the society.
And, for the others out there coming up with ideas as to why this happened - it has NOTHING to do with the Seneschal being "scared" of, or intimidated by, people with more experience. (But, you probably guessed that already.)

Re: The most ridiculous thing I ever heard :::Lately:::!!!
Tue, July 3, 2007 - 11:45 PMI had rather suspected it was more along those lines, Angus. Thank you for satisfying my curiosity. (And for the record, I completely agree with you on all counts.) :) -

Re: The most ridiculous thing I ever heard :::Lately:::!!!
Thu, July 5, 2007 - 8:58 AMThank you very much Dulcinea.
And to set the record straight - for the masses. You don't need to agree with me. I'm all about people disagreeing and/or complaining. William has a right to feel slighted. But, you should deal with the people you have issue with. Dealing in the public forum, and behind made up stories only spawns bad feelings and divides groups. That's part of what destroyed Azurmont years ago. They STILL haven't recovered.
We've tried hard to squash rumors early on - before they become "factual". But, the internet makes that harder and harder every day.
