So, just thinkin' of starting a new thread and the thought came to mind, that it'd be nice to hear what kinds of work people have done in the capacity of a social worker. I'm only 6 years out of grad school.. so i haven't done a whole lot.. but i've done....
medical social work (home health)... did home visits, doing assessments, assisting with resources/referrals, providing brief counseling (primarily re: new diagnoses and coping)... adult/older adult population
social worker in outpatient mental health clinic... individual/group therapy, intake assessments, (also was the computer go-to for social workers, which was fun).. veteran population
suicide prevention coordinator (current)... mostly administrative, doing presentations/trainings, participating in root cause analyses (looking for system problems that led to suicide attempts/completions), some minimal clinical work, meetings, meetings and more meetings, policy/program development, care coordination (though mainly with other clinicians, not directly with client), chart reviews and monitoring high risk patients, consultation for staff.. veteran population
of the 3 i've most enjoyed working in the outpatient mental health clinic.. it is what i've always wanted to do and hope to return to doing clinical at some point
oh and as an intern i worked at a homeless shelter doing groups for the children and case management.. and did assessments in the psychiatric emergency services at a hospital (I enjoyed this alot).
I really like to hear what other social workers do, especially when it's very unique and something i never thought of... i met someone recently that does alot of grant writing and community development
this can also give ideas to folks who are looking for work and are not quite sure what or where to look... :) actually i've mentioned i'm going to Peru for a year and traveling thereafter... when i get back i'm thinking i want to work with children... but not sure in what capacity.. so if people have worked with children let me know where and how that's been :)

Re: Where have you worked?
Mon, August 11, 2008 - 9:13 PMMost of my work experience has been in a county social services agency.
Currently, I am a Program Manager over a staff of social workers working with youth in foster care & kinship care. I just started in the position a few weeks ago.
Before the job I'm in now, I supervised the training function at my agency, training incoming staff, coordinating in-service, running an intern program and assisting staff members in obtaining their hours toward professional licensure.
Prior to that, I worked in a family preservation program at the same agency. I worked in our family reunification program before that, as my first job out of grad school.
During grad school, I completed internships counseling children at a day treatment school and providing case management at child protective services in a different county in a combined Emergency Response / Family Maintenance unit.
Before entering grad school, I worked for a couple years in a residential treatment facility for boys who were under the jurisdiction of juvenile probation.
During college, I volunteered for a year on a suicide and crisis hotline.
Thus far, I think the position I'm currently in is my favorite of all that I've had, but I also really loved the job I had before this one, and the one before that, and...
I guess I came to love each of the jobs I've had, although several of them were really tough at times. -

Re: Where have you worked?
Tue, August 12, 2008 - 12:03 AMThanks for your response!
Oh, I forgot to mention.. well it's more 'volunteer' than 'work', but I'm on the Mental Health Branch of the Emergency Services Department at Burningman... doing that for the first time this year (tho 3rd yr attending BM)... I'll post later on what that experience is like, but it seems I'll mainly be responding to domestic violence, sexual assault and psychotic breaks.... they have a different group of folks (Sanctuary) that deals with 'bad trips'...
should be interesting!!
