The Somatic Experience

public - created 02/06/07
A tribe for students, practitioners and the curious. Somatic Experiencing (R) was developed by Peter A. Levine, a medical biophysicist who has worked for NASA and the Hopi Guidance Center. He wrote Waking The Tiger in 1997, and has received academic support from many experts in the emerging field of traumatology. Books and theories by them can be recommended as well.

By studying how animals process overstimulation before it becomes trauma, he has found a drug-free method for trauma resolution in humans. Our culture has trained us from the very beginning to favour brain wisdom over body wisdom, and to distance ourselves from our animal nature. Since many of us now live in artificial environments, our survival mechanisms have become atrophied and inefficient, making us vulnerable to stress, trauma and disease. This can now be readily reversed by simple practices.

Somatic psychologists and bodyworkers welcome! Please share your perspectives and experience.

DISCLAIMER: This tribe is intended to discuss and describe the basic theories of SE and is not a substitute for training. Treating complex PTSD requires the skilled precision that can only come with training and plenty of practice.
