A call to all! My friends the time is nearing, this is the final countdown. Thevision for our day is a glorious one that brings laughter to even themost hardened of hearts. Take Courthouse Square for example, the“Heart of Downtown Santa Rosa,” we shall warm it with food,face-paint, graffiti walls and more! The plan of action is to meet in Railroad Square at 12 noon andcollect our numbers a bit off the beaten path. From there we willmarch to Courthouse Square taking 3rd St. underneath the 101 overpassand mall. We must give the cops as little reason possible forharassing us, so as we pound the pavement we must make sure thatindividuals stay on the sidewalks, while art cars and bikes flood thestreets. We will strike at the “heart” and take it hostage as our“base of operations.” But we want more than just the heart . . . giveus the whole enchilada! My friends, I hope we all can envision the electrifying effect we mayaffect through our actions. When I close my eyes and imagine how Aug.8th will unfold, I get a big old shit-eatin’ grin stretched across myface from ear to ear. Picture in your mind’s eye a downtown that islively and festive, teeming to the brim with all the beautifullybizarre oddities that make each one of us who we are! (Never forgetthat variety is the spice of life.) I see strangers enjoying thecompany of other strangers, striking up conversations on a whim orbeing bedazzled by the abilities of their fellow neighbors. I seecostumed bicyclists by the hundreds whimsically riding around incircles, a colorful mob careening back and forth disappearing andreappearing, then disappearing, then reappearing again. At everystreet corner, in every nook and cranny, be it bike path or backalley, there are people playing music, people dancing, singing, painting, juggling, weaving, acting, clowning, sculpting, laughing, and laughing, and more! Down this street walks a man dressed like afish carrying a sign that reads, “72% of the world is water . . . nowwho’s the dominant species?” while across the way is a woman walkingon stilts in the opposite direction. The idea is for everybody tobring to the table whatever their wildest imaginations can conceive, but we must keep it “radio friendly” please. Oh yeah, and all areencouraged to wear costume -- the more panache we can muster themerrier! And as it is already expressed above, we must give the cops as fewreasons possible for harassing us. We’re out here to celebrate andset a good example, not be confrontational or riotous. We will notask them for permission, but if all is done right we won’t need to askfor forgiveness either. A few simple things we must follow: • Once we hit the downtown we can not block the sidewalks and dam-uppedestrian traffic, we’ll fill-in all the empty spaces though. Wewill takeover Courthouse Square, but a square is where people aremeant to hang out. Art cars and bikes . . . well those puppies arelegally obligated to remain in the road, so if they just happen tofill up the whole street, how’s that any different than a ToyotaTacoma or Honda Accord?• Be respectful of the businesses. One of our messages is that itdoesn’t need to be “community vs. commerce,” let’s recognize that astronger community compliments commerce.• Please, we can’t have people getting intoxicated in public. If youwanna drink, smoke, or whatever, just go somewhere private like ahouse or a bar.• And finally, leave no trace. Pick up your trash, pick up otherpeoples’ trash. If all is done right we should only be breaking 2 laws, playing musicand playing with a ball. For what law says it’s illegal to dance inpublic? Show me the law that says it’s illegal to paint or draw, readpoetry, perform puppetry, wave flags and sing. Show me the law thatsays it’s illegal to wear a costume while riding a bike or walkingdown the street. I’ve never heard of any, have you? So my friends, the time draws near. The word has been spreading tothousands upon thousands. There’s an article about the Renegade ArtRevival in the new Northbay Bohemian that just came out Wed. 7-29.We’ve got all sorts of groups onboard networking from Northbay BurningMan, to the Nor-Bay PyratePunx, Sonoma County Bicycle Coalition,Sonoma County Arts Council, Free Mind Media Center, and many manymore!! And words are fine and words are dandy, but all of our effortsmean nothing unless we act. This event, this protest of sorts is100%reliant upon the participation and gumption of us all. We needeveryone to come out of their shells on Aug. 8th and congregate inRailroad Square at 12 noon. The city will be ours, if only for a day.Keep spreading the word -- see ya on the 8th!! Cheers! -- Aaron Milligan-Green P.S. Forward this message to all you know.

From the many word-of-keyboard messages being passed around already, I would think this is going to be an exciting opening. Plans are in the works for fire performance and other fun Playa-style events both inside and out of the gallery.

At the gallery while shooting picts, I was able to chat at length with Graton artist Tony Speirs. He coordinated some large-scale collaborative works for the Burning Man base exhibits and is installing them again for this show. Some of the featured artists are Will Smith and Todd Barricklow among dozens of others who submitted work from around the globe. I've heard much about Tony's work and love what I've seen online: http://tonyspaintings.blogspot.com/

I'm sure I'll see tons of Burners there for the party evening on Friday, February 22nd, 6-9pm, 2008. I can't wait! There is an official afternoon opening on Thursday, February 21st from 4-6pm as well.

P.S. There was also talk of a need for an after-party on Friday night... Anyone have ideas on where to go about that...? This could be a very fun evening!

GALLERIES & SHOPS

Most every gallery and shop were open late and offering fun and tasty treats. I was excited to find a back alley gallery and studio spaces plus a new vintage shop with a 50s rockabilly style called Skirt Chaser on the corner (more guys stuff pleeeze!).

Also, Barbara Elliott's studio was open which included her studio mate, Mary, and her resin paintings.

http://www.barbaratransfers.com/

STREETWISE

Our good musical friend and tribemate, Amber Lee Baker, was busking too with her fiddler and a song or too with Miss Choklit singing backup.

http://tribes.tribe.net/amberleeandtheanomalies

In the 50s pin-up vein, Tibidabo Photography studio had a little window display with a lighting kit and a live model. She was all dolled up and many gawkers stood around while she struck all the cute pin-up poses for the flashing camera. See much better shots of people off the street in the studio at their blog page:

SECOND WIND

There was even a late night, somewhat frisky, impromptu tango explosion with some very sexy gals. Too bad all the sleepy people missed the even better second wind that ended at Russian River Brewery with the amazing Steve Pile live music and to drink the better of beers in town:

SURPRISE!

I was pleasantly surprised at how many people showed up! Let's hope it represents a rise in fun and arty folks in Santa Rosa and beyond. I look forward to the next big event. Perhaps more people will show up next time for all the fun... (Hint, Hint! :-)

Since I have a bit of a love / hate relationship with graffiti (love talented street artists who lean towards smart commentary and new style / hate the other more common "bombs" that resemble a dog's territorial piss on a wall), I thought this report card idea is in the long-time-coming category.

The idea is to humorously bash the trash while giving credit to the talent in the hopes of reducing the former. Not sure that would work, and I wonder about the noise these critiques add to the public space, but I like the idea.
Spring set up a superb show of about 12 or so crafty artists who presented a wide variety of goodies in all shapes, sizes, and colors (and fabrics too of course).

I spotted Heidi McIverson who says she is set up in a new and better studio space. The new plushies are most desireable. She's got a show coming next at Maude's in Petaluma (after Phoebe Stewart Washer's show). See a somewhat recent piece here:
William Smith and Tood Barricklow were selling wall art and plenty of affordable mugs and glasses.

Jacquie Smith was attending too with a growing selection of odd and interesting polaroid transfers.
I love the dream-like and odd situations Phoebe's unique characters find themselves in. What *IS* going on her mind...? Strange and lovely things are in there, with a wink and a mild twist of the grotesque. Rumor has it Phoebe completed most of these pieces within the last week!

I was disappointed/delighted to note that within about 20 minutes of opening, 3/4 of the works had been snapped up by greedy Petaluma collectors!

A Street Gallery and Boomerang hosted two stellar receptions last night!

Some highlights for me, besides seeing all of the great works of course, were as follows:

1 - Walking into A Street and, within 30 secs., being asked by Eric Bostrom, "Are you Stache?" I was looking forward to meeting him and enjoyed chatting and seeing his gorgeous drawing in the show. See more of his stuff:

http://tribes.tribe.net/sonomaartcast/thread/af286ba3-7177-43e7-9daf-e30137a570a7

2 - Choklit and I finally picking up an original William Smith Time Slip drawing:

http://killingtimestudios.com/William%27s%20Stuff/Wm.%20Image%20Pages/Time%20Slips/demonalcohol.htm

While this particular piece seems the least "Will-like" compared to others in the series in terms of character look, it is, according to Will, the first drawing in the series. Perhaps more will come our way soon...

3 - Seeing Spring and Todd with little Souji tucked warmly and snoozing in Todd's zipper jacket. And later running down the street screaming with their older daughter, zany Djuna.

4 - Meeting up with our good friend Barbara Elliott and dragging her along (quite willingly) with us to Boomerang. See Barbara's work:

5 - Entering Boomerang and being greeted by a very jolly Jack Haye (Husband to owner gallery Drew Washer) with a glass of wine in one and hand and big hugs for all.

6 - More great art to see at Boomerang as curated by Jiri Jacknowitz:
http://tribes.tribe.net/sonomaartcast/photos/c28bbe24-7237-4d09-b526-986890d0f481

7 - Chatting with Michael Garlington and him being so impressed by the Sonoma ArtCast tribe that he signed a gifted book of his wonderful photographs to me! His photos and his big generous heart moooove me...

Some Garlington photos shown here at Petaluma's Barry Singer Gallery:

http://www.singergallery.com/gallery.cfm?artistID=151

And listen! I didn't know he has recordings like "Gettin' Drunk With Mikey Garlington!" Brilliant!:

http://www.last.fm/music/Michael+Garlington/Gettin%27+Drunk+With+Mikey+Garlington%21

8 - Yet more fun with friends at Bricks Pizza joint over slices and sloshy vino until the wee hours. What a night!

9 - Lastly, but not leastly, special thanks to tons newbies who graciously received many Sonoma ArtCast Moo Cards. Let's hope they join up and check out / participate with their own art news in the near future:
122 Fourth Street (in Railroad Square), Santa Rosa, CA 95401, (707) 575-5123

I'm really impressed with the space at Daredevils and Queens. Travis, the owner, seems to be highly enthusiastic about local art in a large and spacious, open-lift style venue that doubles as a salon by day! Love it!

Victoria's opening was made better by the removal of the salon chairs and other furniture, creating a tall-ceiling open space feeling with plenty of room to mingle.

Travis also is interested in branching out to many art forms including graffiti in an ideal back lot area with huge walls as well as providing live or DJ music and good food. Actually, Travis informed me shows have been hosted there for over a year. Had I known!!

I'm looking forward to many more amazing shows and performances in the future. Stay tuned...

Jack Haye from, Boomerang in Petaluma, was kind enough to show me around the gallery before their upcoming annual Valentine's exhibit this Saturday, the 10th, 2007.

The exhibit was titled "Postcards from the Apocalypse" and was currated loosely around artists' comments on what Apocalypse means in today's world.

As usual, there were a host of far-flung influences showing from about 17 artists. Much of the work seemed to center around current global issues such as war, famine, various corporate greediness, and, of course, oil.

See the images from the show in this tribe's photos section. Hopefully, we'll get to see more of these folks in the future.

I was reading an interesting post by one of the SAC members, Brino, about the Underground Garage Gallery Groupe:

http://people.tribe.net/brinoism/blog/0c16de10-7787-495f-bea1-55f6941a3f07

With this group, Brino seems to be forwarding the idea that traditional ways of art viewing and acquisition are perhaps obsolete. Or, at least, can be viably circumvented by artists taking management into their own hands for the betterment of artists and viewers/collectors (that is, the local art community).

The local garage as gallery is a great idea that both empowers artists and enhances community. Also, the virtual or online garage gallery at the single artist (or small group of artists) is now in full swing.

An example is Santa Rosa artist, Meredith Hamilton, whom I recently helped set up a gallery and blog Web site with an e-commerce plug-in installed for her to rapidly and easily create a simple shop: http://meredithmade.com/

Also, see Tiny Showcase that is a site featuring a growing selection of well printed underground pieces at affordable prices: http://www.tinyshowcase.com/

Are traditional galleries' days numbered...? Or is that too simplistic. I'd like to hear what y'all think about the present and future of art making, viewing, and selling.
