Last year I camped with a freind in a theme camp. That friend isn't going this year and I really didn't pick up on how camping works. Do I need to regiseter with a camp or are there "first come first serve" areas where I can just set up if no one is already there? If I arrive early enough this could work or will I find myself banished to the outer reaches?

Re: Where to camp?
Wed, June 27, 2007 - 7:31 PMTry googling "burning man theme camps" or ask around on tribe. There are so many camps that come in so many flavors! Usually, with a theme camp, you need to preregister and pay a fee to help cover community set-up. (our camp has a killer kitchen, includes three snacks a day, a community dinner, a kick ass heated shower, shade, and water) Great deal for $100.
Good luck!

Re: Where to camp?
Wed, June 27, 2007 - 7:35 PMI camped on my own last year. It's pretty much a first come first serve basis for those areas not already reserved for theme camps. I was sort of out in the boonies, but it wasn't bad at all and I met a lot of great people.

Re: Where to camp?
Sun, July 22, 2007 - 7:25 PMlast year we just went to the open camping areas. we found some empty space, asked our soon to be new neighbors if it was cool if we plopped down, and there we were. towards the middle of the week some people were becoming quite cranky about late comers, and we ended up welcoming in a lot of random people to camp next to us. we ended up making some good friends from all over the place that way. even though i think we're going to be camping with happy camp this year, if i had to do it over again the only thing i would do different with the open camping space is to find out where the large camps are. we ended up in a good spot last year but i think it would have been a lot different if we had camped unsuspectingly right next to the deep end or nexus, and ended up with more foot traffic than i think we would have been happy with. good luck.
