Last year I camped with a freind in a theme camp. That friend isn't going this year and I really didn't pick up on how camping works. Do I need to regiseter with a camp or are there "first come first serve" areas where I can just set up if no one is already there? If I arrive early enough this could work or will I find myself banished to the outer reaches?

Hey guys, my name is Lisa, and I'm from Mammoth Lakes, CA. I did my first burn this year and it was awesome. I was lucky enough to camp with veterans, so we had a lot of shade, food, and good people to be around. I definetly learned a lot about myself and how I react to certain situations, and going with my boyfriend was a challenge but in the long run we are closer. Coming back to the default world was certainly interesting, esp. coming back to work today.

Anyways, everybody introduce yourself! :)

Peace and Love,
Lisa

Man, can you guys believe how fast this year is going? So what is everyone up to in regards for preparing for this year's Burning Man? Anybody got any cool gifts they are making or have ideas for? My boyfriend and I are slowing acquiring little things here and there that we will need out at the Playa this year so that we're not stressing out at the last minutes like we were last year. As for gifts, I've gotten into crocheting this year, and I'm making beanies and scarfs for people. I also got a new digital camera last month, so I cannot wait to be out on the Playa everyday taking awesome pictures!

Hi everyone. Ive just started a tribe for the New Mexico burners, which i was sad to see didn't exist. Anyways, all are welcome to join up and talk, we're mostly just trying to get the various NM groups, individuals, and ex patriots in touch with each other and offer mutual support. Its a little empty right now but hopefully not for long.

What the playa did for me....

Hullo there fellow sophomores,

Here is a post from copied from the other place I like to blog.

Seemed appropriate to share it here. In fact, I'm excited to do so. I suspect many folks here will admit to having "sophomore playa fever" like I do. Whether or not that feeling is transient--and I suspect it will die down as more of this stuff becomes more deeply integrated in me--this stuff is real. As are its effects through my life and my being.

I invite you to share your own thoughts & experiences!

Oh--the blog starts with my saying I'd better check in with my regular readers. 'Cause I been runnin' around havin' fun with my Burner friends, hence much less time to write!!

***************
All right...
I figure I’d better check in with y’all or you’ll start to worry, or somethin’.

I could easily title this entry, “How the Playa Cracked the Walls Around My Heart.”

Going to Burning Man 2006 was an intense experience for me. It brought me face to face with some of my fears and other issues, all while providing me with new friends, deepening old friendships and having one hell of a lot of fun. Some of you will remember this; I blogged about it under a different account. I’m tempted to go into that tangent right now, but I won’t. Anyway, it was definitely transformative, in the most positive and empowering sense.

Now that I have been away from the playa for four and a half months, the transformation continues. The magic of the community continues to reach out and swirl around me. I find myself part of a community where everyone I’ve met “gets it”. Deep parts of myself are joyfully roaring to life, vibrating and humming with long overdue recognition.

What is this “it” that everyone seems to get? Hard to say. The Burning Man experience is well known for being extremely difficult to describe or convey. Perhaps “it” consists of things I’ve held dear all my life, some of which I hadn’t even been able to articulate or put a name to. It’s kind of a shedding of all the crap and falsehoods society makes you wear, like a coat of armor that you don’t even realize after a while because you’re numb about it.

As you can probably tell by my writings, I’ve never been an “in the box” person. Never. Not even close. It’s always been more difficult for me to fit into narrow, restrictive societal confines than it is for most people I meet. (So why is it that I “have to” act like a girl? or not put my feet up on the table? or say “bless you” when someone sneezes? or hesitate to put skates on my feet and wheel around the neighborhood at midnight? or overlook the beauty and character in a homeless person? or not reach out and say “hi” to a stranger on the street? These are things I never quite “get”.)

So I traveled 12 hours by car (and that was pushing it, nonstop driving) to connect with this community of people from all over the world, many from Southern California. Now, when you first enter Black Rock City (the temporary, one-week-a-year city of 40,000 people that is Burning Man), they say, “Welcome Home.” At the time, that didn’t resonate with me. Not at all. It was foreign. Foreign and scary and exciting.

This sounds totally cheesy, but the “foreign” part was emanating from within me. Not from the playa. Not from the people. It reflected my fear of rejection and not fitting in, ground into me by years of being an out-of-the-box person in a very boxy society. In one sense, Burning Man is a big old energy vortex and it reflects whatever is emanating from YOU.

Now, I feel I have come home. Here’s an example, and why this is all on my mind today.

I cleared my calendar of work today, and drove about half an hour to meet a woman who wants to barter these incredibly beautiful playa coats for fitness training, which I have a good handle on. I didn’t know what to expect, but I immediately sensed that this was a kindred spirit. No doubt. We had a wonderful conversation and arranged a deal that is going to be really beneficial and fun for both of us. It’s going to help me with my YOGA, too, as she knows a really good yoga studio that works on a donation basis, perfect for my fluctuating income. So she and I will be doing that together about once a week.

Then I spent some time speed skating with an old friend I recently reconnected with. In addition to the workout (my 3rd in 24 hours!), I find myself learning a lot about interpersonal interactions through this friendship. Fascinating....and definitely a part of my ongoing personal growth curve.

So then I went to another burner friend’s little gathering. Oh my God, the people there were so cool! Like everyone I’ve met in this community, they are just really warm and open and accepting and loving. They naturally talk about the things that are very dear to me: natural environment, self-expression, interpersonal dynamics and energy, internal/personal growth, wonder, awe, pushing one’s own boundaries and restrictions. I felt totally at home. I gave my friend a back rub and he loved it. No one shies away from human warmth, contact, connection here.

Oh, and a bunch of them were talking about natural health and cleansing. I have known for a few months now that I really very much need to start cleansing my physical body. They are doing it, fasting and master cleansing and all this stuff that is starting to sound very attractive to me. Nourished by human connection and other fun stuff, I feel that I can give up my emotional addiction to food and run for a little while on the slight excess I’ve built up over the years. (burning fat cells is good because that is where our body stores toxins!!)

One of the parts within me that is opening up and just soaking in the joy, has to do with feeling completely accepted and understood. Another part has to do with the inner child. This community knows how to play!!!! (See my hula hooping picture from New Year’s.) Another has to do with the wonderful opportunities that just seem to be falling my way. The coat, the yoga, the gatherings (there’s another this coming Saturday, and another next week). The friendships. The hula hooping for core strength. The cuddling, especially useful for utterly single folks like me.

So my one big problem with all of this is, I need to make myself settle down and do some WORK!! I have never before in my life been a “party girl”, and hey, I’m living proof that one can do this completely sober. Well, except for the coffee, which I am considering kicking again! But I’m self employed, and so my structure is whatever I create for myself. And for a lot of my life I was too attuned to structure, having been too scared or otherwise not ready to explore the rest of this stuff outside of school and career focus. So now the pendulum has swung the other way; and a little discipline is in order!

Righty-o, speaking of which, I need to get some sleep here.

Much love!
