Full Moon at CoSM - Passing the Torch

For the last 3 and a half years, Mz. imani has facilitated the Drum and Dance at CoSM's Full Moon Celebrations. She has chosen to step back to 4 times a year, because she has been called by the elders to study and her students to teach. Her other plans include music, writing, and spending more time with her husband as they move to Baltimore.

Kiana Love and I are stepping up to coordinate the team that will help to hold the logistic and energetic needs of the Full Moon Drum and Dance. We're looking for people who are familiar with the Full Moon Drum and Dance, and the spiritual traditions of this community. Please come early to help co-create the space, and/or maintain it through the night. We're also looking for enthusiastic drummers and dancers who can uphold the joyous rhythms and ecstatic movement that the Full Moon at CoSM has become known for.

If you have participated in Full Moon before, on any level, we welcome you back. If you have never been to Full Moon, we invite you to join us.

Free admission for those who are willing to help with set up and take down.

The Process:
The unique and eclectic elemental approach of Sacred SoulFire invites
you to go deep into your heart as you go deep into the night. In the
afternoons, you are invited to join an Elemental Group to explore one
of the 5 topics offered. All Elemental Groups support the sacred all
night fire circle. Whether thru the expressions of drumming & music,
dancing and chanting, spoken word and visual art, or the manifestation
of harmony in our lives and in our world, the all night fire circle
and the Elemental Groups help to guide us on a mystical journey that
rhythmically re-awakens our potential.

SoulFire Props, a community finding its way HOME.

Greetings!

I hope you are all well.

The DC local SoulFire crew has developed a most harmonious relationship with each other surrounding the concepts of intentional music making, sacred space defining and transmutational shamanic healing, thru esctatic dance, art, rhythm and community. The ease and the grace with which we set our events up and take them down is truly a blessing in my life. This is mostly true cuz it is clear that there is effort and attention to detail by all of us, and that means that there is sustainability in this model. The content that shows up, with invitation is amazing. The Potlucks are more and more delicious, and the take downs are being done in under an hour! There are children, adults, "tweens", teens, folks from a plethora of different paths, and joy in the eyes of all.

i wanted to send a shout out to this collective of fire circle folks to announce that we have found a local site for Sacred SoulFire! YEAHHHHHH.

For the past 3 years we have been doing SoulFire Inside at Seekers Church in DC, developing the experience and intentional community based values of a sacred fire circle. We have wafted around looking for the right place for us to develop a longterm home for our outdoor Fire Circle work and play. While we have been told we "should" go to the same place and "should" be at the same time of year, we have not been able to deliver on that. In principle we agree with the suggestions, but previously we have not found the right spot for us that will enable and support our longterm growth and viability, as one of the many styles of fire circle magic available to those who seek it for themselves.

A few months ago, i sent out some requests to friends in the Frederick area, looking for sites for Sacred SoulFire. I got a couple interesting leads, but it took me a minute to follow thru on them. Recently Bellavia, Leah and myself took a ride up to Hawkwood Farm, and as soon as we arrived on the land, we all felt how things were beginning to fall into alignment. By the time we rode around on the land (it was cold and wet that day) and were sipping on a beverage in the farmhouse, with Erin (the guardian of the land) it was very clear to each of us, that it is well worth running the experiment of Sacred SoulFire at Hawkwood Farm, this summer.

There are so many synchronicities, they are too many to reflect here, but the 2 biggest are the name similarity of our home in the Southeast (Hawkwind Earth Renewal, Alabama) and the fact that Hawkwood is in HARMONY, MD.

It is our hope that Hawkwood Farm will provide the stability we desire. Yet we know that we have to follow our hearts, with no attachment to the outcome. Whatever happens, we have entered into this communal experiment, by accepting Hawkwood Farm invitation for us to come there. Clearly, Hawkwood Farm is supporting the sacred all night fire circle movement and appears to becoming a sanctuary for surburban and urban folks like me. This land calls out to us to bring our music, motion and mojo to work with the spirits of the place, the nature, community, self, other with a focus of helping to bring more light to the world. It is a place that will welcome you with open hands and encouragement for who you are.

Details on presenters, cost and offerings to come soon, but here is what i know now.
Sacred SoulFire-Maryland
Dates: Thursday July 3rd to Sunday July 6th, (Core Collaborator Days are Weds and Monday)
CONTENT: 5 Elemental Groups (teaching & sharing circles) that will focus on deepening our relationship with self, other, spirit & the Fire Circle Itself. Community Ritual, Community Art Projects, Gratitude Tree, Ceremonial Tattoo work with SMS, All Night Fires & more.
FOOD: We will have an AMAZING Meal Plan headed up by Darriel Park (just ask anyone who was at SSF-WV how the food was)
CHILDREN: Child Centered Programing will be instigated by Tammy (Darriel's wife)
LAND DETAILS: 91 acres to find the perfect spot for camping, woods and open fields, a pond to swim and fish in, a barn to have an inside circle if we get rain, or have a movie night in. Several Fire Circles already developed, an hour from Baltimore, and hour and a half from DC, with plenty of parking.
COST: as low as we can make it.

Hawkwood Farm is home to Erin Aylor, an amazing artist and kind person. He has welcomed us with open arms and an open heart, and all involved feel a resonance of sustainability and growth. With our (Owen and myself) plans to develop a space in Baltimore, and Erin's plans to develop his land for events like SoulFire, it seems that the universe is presenting us with an opportunity to work with the Urban/Rural model of collaboration.

FUTURE NEWS:
Long Term Event Horizons include the possiblity that we will begin Full Moon Drum and Dance events, with the colder months being at our space in Baltimore and the warmer months being at Hawkwood Farm. Time will tell us, and as soon as we have a plan for that phase, we will let you all know.

We hope you will join us, especially if you are a local to DC/Baltimore on July 4th weekend.
With that said, we all know it is difficult to schedule without conflicting other fire circle dates. My "polling of peeps" reflected that 99% of us felt that this is a good weekend for Sacred SoulFire, as the content of our work is so different from each of the other events (we know of) being offered on that weekend. We recognize the good work that each crew of folks delivers, Earth Drum Council (AHO) and 4QF (Drum and Splash). We trust the process of the interconnected, diverse Fire Circle community members being able to choose the event that most supports their personal preference of Fire Circle style.

If we do not see each other at SSF-Maryland, may the spirits weave our paths together at some other juicy event, and very soon!

Gratitude and Full Moons

For the last 3 and a half years, i have traveled from our home in Rockville, Maryland to NYC, every month to instigate, facilitate and nurture the drum and dance community surrounding the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors. When I arrived at the Prayer Gathering for the first time, it was held in Brooklyn, at the Grey's home.

It was a full moon lunar eclipse (harmonic concordance). It was Saturday November 8th, 2003. I arrived with my mentor, Nicki Scully and 3 other girlfriends. On Friday night, I had facilitated an all night "indoor fire circle" at Saint John the Divine, for youth of the diocese, and on Saturday morning, i co-taught an Alchemical Healing class with Nicki Scully, where I received empowerment to teach Alchemical Healing. Obviously a full day, but wait, there’s more!

After class was over, we learned that Alex and Allyson were opening their home to the community for the Full Moons with the intention to build energy for the Chapel of Sacred Mirrors. Still only a glimpse in the hearts and minds of a very few folks, the Chapel, as home to Alex’s work, was already a force to be reckoned with; a force that clearly called out for the health of humanity and called me to support the manifestation of its vision.

Between the journey work that Nicki initiated in me, the lack of sleep from the all night event with the kids and being completely lit up by Alex Starke's call to service, I knew that life had made one of the momentous concoctions of chaos and grace to completely change my life. I left with the knowledge that i had to come back and figure out how to plug into helping to build the Chapel.

Just before this trip to NYC, I had received an invitation to join Body Temple. I was asked to come to the city weekly to rehearse, but that was a bit out of my reach. While I offered to come monthly to explore the music and synchronicity, this was not what was destined for me. Yet it led me to make room in my heart to travel once a month to NYC. I knew it was time to take my work to the next level; outreach into an urban community (that really was just beginning as a community). I wanted to see if this "technology" we discovered around a fire in Western Mass could translate to the city.

The art work of Alex and Allyson Grey, speaks directly to the primary mystical experience, and, for me, this concept is the most important experience of the sacred all night fire circle. I have learned so many things about myself, about community and about how to instigate a collaborative model of sacred drum circle (inside) by showing up every month at the Full Moon. I learned to let go of expectations and to come in service. I learned what it means to hold space for freedom of expression, and how to hold the responsibility of tending to the details of setting (and maintaining) a sacred container.

While at times it was a challenge, I feel that we met the challenge as we have always provided a space for chants, community art and spoken word poetry. We have always been able to provide a supportive environment where we can open our hearts, and deepen our connections, thru collaborative rhythm, art, spirit and dance.

I am so proud of what we have done together!
Truly GRATITUDE OVERFLOWS FROM MY HEART.

By dedicating myself -thru my actions-, and you dedicating yourself -thru your actions- i feel very clear that we have co-created an altar of authentic expression. I feel we have developed a way to come together where the love of the universe can teach us about rhythm, life, art, collaboration and shamanistic principles of intention, sound, gratitude and healing.

Remember, this is ALL in the midst of NYC.

As I come to my new year (Sam Hain), I look to the only consistent thing in life: Change.
As all things change, change has come to me.

Between the September and October Full Moons, I have discovered it is time for me to chose to step back to 4 Full Moons a year, and it is time to call in the next generation of SoulFire Guardians to tend to the Full Moon Drum and Dance at CoSM.

Please know that life is so good for me.
What I share with you here is a deep, deep, deep blessing.

I feel that Allyson and Alex Grey and the CoSM Community have helped me to mature my nature, and distill the nature of my medicine path. I am eternally grateful and will always remember this.

My reality is that I have been called to step up in different ways. I am called to teach more, explore more subtle expressions of rhythm (thru the Hang, Shruti boxes and voice) record more music (of the acoustic and electronic blending genre) and to spend a lot of time writing this winter. My reality is that - i feel ready – and I feel that my experience at CoSM has held up a mirror that has shown me my strengths, challenged my weaknesses and loved me thru it all!

This medicine path i have walked a long time, she continues to hone me thru my experiences, continues to teach me this accumulated knowledge and continues to humble me by the beauty we have co-created and shared together.

My reality is that we have made the decision to move from our home in Rockville, MD to the Baltimore area. Been here 10 years, raised 2 kids, and I feel ready to (metaphorically) take this temple down, and prepare to build another temple. Perhaps a building in the city, perhaps a farmhouse, a place just outta the city, we don’t know yet. What we do know is that an hour and 10 mins is too long for Owen to commute to his new job. We know we are on the move towards a new home. A place where are art studios are bigger and connected, and a place where we can do the community work and play that calls to be done (SoulFire, Full Moons, Classes, etc, etc.).

NOW is the time for the next generation of SoulFire guardians to step up to nurture the nature of the CoSM Full Moon Drum and Dance. I FULLY BELIEVE (100%) in the local NYC communities ability to respond, and to support the growth, evolution and sustainability of the CoSM Drum and Dance Community. If you are interested and willing, please contact me so i can help to coordinate you with the crew that will be co-creating the sacred container and attending to the responsibilities of freedom of expression.

I have learned that Freedom of Expression, does in fact entail, quite a bit of responsibility. Holding space for these responsibilities for the CoSM Full Moon Drum and Dance has been one of the greatest joys of my life.

It is my hope that the CoSM Community will continue to find value in setting up the Full Moon Drum and Dance space with intention, collaboration and inclusivity. It is my hope that the drummers will continue to listen to each other, and share the notes that are available, so that each voice is heard. To share this sonic space with the poets, singers, hang players and quiet voices. It is my hope that the dancers will connect with each other and the drummers, smiling and offering blessings to the earth, to the ancestors, to each other and to CoSM.

I am always here to support the visions of authentic expression thru collaboration and kindness. Look forward to seeing you all soon, either in Maryland (2nd Saturdays of the month) or in the ethers.

Hi All!
Just back from an intensely wonderful ForestDance weekend...and I was so inspired to bring the connection back to my own community I have started on the path of organizing the following event in beautiful Warwick, NY.

There is an incredible
historic horse farm in this town situated on 230 acres of land called Borderland Farm which
has generously allowed us to hold space on their property for a Sacred
Fire Circle.

The name of this place may sound familiar to you because just this past Mothers Day 2007,
the magnificant 1800's Victorian farm house which was a landmark in
this town burned to the ground taking the life of the farm's barn
manager. What many people do not know is that on the same site the
original 1700's Colonial farm house also burned to the ground many
years before. Oddly, the barns which are right next to the homesite
housing dozens of animals, where never touched by the fire on either
occassion. It is many people's thought in the community that some type
of harm was done by people on this land maybe to Native Americans
which is why this tragic history keeps reliving itself in an effort to
remove the human presence but never harming the animals in any way.

It is our intention to do a ritual on the spot of the old homesite to
clear/cleanse the area...remove the destructive aspect of fire from
the spot...and take it to a new place on the property where we will
use it for good and celebration and honor it's power to heal in a
place where it has done a tremendous amount to hurt in the past. It is
our feeling that a tribal ritual on these lands will honor the spirit
of those who may have perished, release them and thusly bring a
harmony and balance back that is obviously very much needed.

This event will be held Saturday Night, October 20th. We will begin
with the opening circle and cleansing ritual at the homesite promptly
at 7:00...and then move to the Sacred Circle site to drum and dance
until 12:00 midnight...when we will celebrate the new day's arrival
and hopefully a new energy brought to these grounds. Everyone is
welcomed to stay and continue on drumming and dancing until the
morning...and of course you are welcomed to camp out overnight as well!

It is our hope to use this place next year for a weekend festival and
to continue to use it for years to come for this higher purpose.

Please, Please, Please come join us...we will be opening this up to
the community in general so that they may participate and heal as
well. There will be many people there who have never experienced a
Sacred Circle and so it would be great if as many people could come as
possible who are "veterans" so that these new people feel the power of
our beautiful tribal spirit!!

Any suggestions would be GREAT as I am literally putting this together
starting today....I would love to hear from a Shaman or
Priest/Priestess who would have advice or words of wisdom on our
ground cleansing ritual.

Forestdance Mass. and Costa Rica Updates

Hi folks,

Registration for Forestdance Costa Rica is officially open. Come and do the sacred at the foot of Costa Rica’s largest waterfall, the Diamante Falls. Our hosts there from the Art of Union came to the very first Forestdance in Georgia during the Harmonic Concordance in 2003. The gathering in Costa Rica will be the 10th Forestdance since that magical week. This gathering will be Feb. 19th-23rd. Registration includes meals, and people are welcome to come a couple of days early and stay late for a small fee for lodging and food.

To check availability and rates for flights I suggest trying Spirit Air. You will need to fly into San Jose, and from there either rent a car, take a $3 bus to Musoc and a $12 cab ride to the town of San Salvador, or book a space on a shuttle van from the airport. The retreat at Diamante Sanctuary is called Heaven on Mother Earth, or H.O.M.E., and it is indeed a lush and immaculate taste of paradise. We will be truly blessed to be together on that sacred land, doing what we love to do.

Forestdance Massachusetts is just around the corner over the week surrounding Labor Day. There will be 8 seed groups to choose from. Read more about what the seed groups are about on the main site. The gathering runs from Aug. 29th- Sept. 4th. Wednesday and Thursday we will be settling in together, with a short fire on Thursday night. We will do all night fires for three night in a row from Friday to Monday morning. Monday and Tuesday will be integration days with connecting, heart sharing, entertainment, and community building exercises. Seed groups will run every day, and will run at different times, so each attendee can be part of more than one. Here are your choices with the name of the hub facilitator:

Success in Blending SPices, CoSM FIRE 2007

Hello...

I am sitting here in the afterglow of a radiantly successful event!

major props being sent out from my heart to all of the folks that staffed CoSM Fire! There were moments of amazing grace and beauty, some temporary, some firery, some fluid, some static...all carved deeply into my psyche and sensory memory bank. images i will be depositing and withdrawing for years to come!

we began this merger of "acoustons and electrons" at SSF-NY last year and over the last year i have invested major amounts of time and energy so that i could educate myself about the electronic music scene in NYC (Freek Factory, Sub Swara, CoSM, Grand Space events, etc). my goal has been to be in service to the dance and to discover the similarities and diversities of our scenes that are dedicated to expression, dance and entrainment. I have found that the best DJ's i have come in contact with always read the energy of the dance floor. This is very similar to my experience of the folks in our fire circle scene who read the energy of the circle, before offering some piece of music or poetry or art in action.

we had 150 folks participate at CoSM Fire and i have heard that we met most people's needs of entrainment, entertainment , art and expression. For those folks that did not get their needs met, i hope we can dialogue and learn from your experiences on how to make it better event. i do feel that we have found a sustainable model for CoSM Fire, at CSS, as we were able to make music all night (even tho i had to remind all the drummers "playing with one finger means we get to play all night" over and over)....

just a couple reminders about up coming events:
The Rhythm Shamans next go to starwood for an all night fire on Thursday and a performance on mainstage Saturday night. we will run the SoulFire Electrique model for our all night fire there, so if you missed CoSM Fire and want to check out the blending model of sacred fire circle work and play, please join us there...

and if you wanna check out the acoustic experience of SoulFire, we are gathering august 9-12 at Abrams Creek Campground, near Elk Garden, WV. ping me off list, or check consciouscollaborations for more info...and we plan to get back to soulfire@cosm, and soulfire inside in September...

I was going to just post this on the thread about Soooz's and Imani's birthday party....but then I said "nnnnaaaahhhh, it needs it's own thread".

Yesterday (dah birthday bash) was so powerful for me, in so many ways. First off...lemme say, all of your love brings me such comfort, and takes me so hhhiiiiiggggghhhhhh. I find peace and bliss with you guys. I've been so blessed with you.

I'm amazed at what you guys bring out in me with my Zills....wwwoooohoooo I had fun, I just surrendered to your beats of the drums and let it rip.
The sunset was amazing, it brought tears to my eyes and my heart overflowed.

I also feel my bonds with you have deepened, Imani, Soooz, I just love you girls even more, we share such magickal times together. I've missed you Moshe, your drumming gets me so high....the one who's responsible for bringing this bellydancer to the circle in front of the drummers. Stay this time? Yust....you just make me giggle, you've got such a way with words....and all my other beloved friends, we have so much more love to share, with each other, and with the City of New York.

Thank you all for such an amazing day....I look forward to all that we have to share in the future. Imani...what we're aiming for, we shall accomplish.

An instigation invitation for you to join us at SoulFire@CoSM on Fri 5/11, NYC and/or SoulFire Inside on Sat, 5/12 in DC.

I teach a drum class in NYC from 8:30-9:30pm, followed by an opening circle at 10pm. We hold open the ceremonial space with the
intent to explore our rhythmic conversation skills and artistic improvisation til 3am.

The class i offer at CoSM, is a basic intro on how to utilize the opportunities available in the SoulFire container. While not a
technique class, it is a way to gain deeper insights into what we do and how to receive all that SoulFire events offer for our
transformative individual and collective experiences. If you are a dancer, drummer, artist or interested witness, this time can help acclimate you to SoulFire and help to effectively cocreate a landing zone for the mothership.

Before SFI (in DC) Debby Sugarman will host an introduction to the Heart of Now from 1-3pm. Here is a description of that work:
"Heart of Now (formerly Naka-Ima) has been taught at Lost Valley Educational Center in Oregon for the last ten years. It is primarily a practice of honesty that encourages participants to be fully present with themselves and each other. The practice focuses on breath, body awareness, trusting our emotions, identifying limiting ideas, and living in our vision. By becoming aware of how we are feeling and what we are thinking in each moment, we can interact with others in a way that allows greater honesty, connection and intimacy. While the practices taught at Heart of Now nourish the individual, Heart of Now has been a powerful tool for creating and nurturing community."

Cost for SoulFire@CoSM is $20 (including the class) and Debby is asking for a sliding scale donation of $1-$20. Cost for SFI is $10,
kids and elders by donation.

June 30/July 1 -The Divine Feminine Alpha Birthday Celebration

Dear Friends, Freeks, and Faeries,
With great forethought and luck, and a little help from my friends, I will be throwing the birthday party I've always wanted. The lovely gracious and talented Miz Imani and Dana Divine and I have birthdays in July. Our most beloved brothers Mikio and Haj have agreed to DJ for this celebration.

June 30 is Full Moon at CoSM - and it is a BLUE Moon! We begin there at 7:30pm for CoSM’s prayer/polytheistic variety program. Full Moon Drum & Dance with Mz Imani will run from 10pm-midnite.

After midnite, the party moves just across the river, to my house in Long Island City - with backyard and rooftop views of the Manhattan skyline, and neighbors who are cooperative to the notion of a 24-hour throwdown. The revelry will proceed as long as anyone cares to spin and dance. A cuddle puddle (my carpeted, unfurnished living room) is available for crashing. The jacuzzi may be open for your soaking pleasure-there is a 4-person max.

Sunday, July 1, we plan a Church-type vibe, in the magnificent model that Haj has created at Grand Space in March and April, all day and evening. Open fire is out of the question, but fire spinning/hooping is cool. Instruments very welcome, including drums. And any other toys/games you can share.

Donations of food/beverages graciously accepted—please bring YOUR favorite dish to share. I will provide some food and paper goods. My next-door neighbors have volunteered to share their gas BBQ, so meat and veggies can be grilled. Decorating will take place noon-11pm Friday 6/29 and noon-6pm Saturday 6/30, any help is welcome.

Full Moon Drum and Dance & SoulFire @ CoSM, May 2007

Weds Night, May 2nd is the Full Moon.
We gather at CoSM (CoSM.org), in the chapel for the first prat of the
evening (7:30-9:30) for an ecclectic prayer gathering of mystics,
poets, musicians and friends.

Then from 9:45 to midnight, we are in CoSMosis (the dance studio) for
the drum and dance. energy tends to be full and big (like the moon)
and is a fun ride...

Quakers & Shakers...headbangers on the nu era?

Hello,
in response to someones question about different traditions in Shamanistic dancing I wrote the following to another tribe. Thought you'd might like to read it too.

I think there may have been a difference between what Westerners call dancing (in the past) and what the anthropologists observed indigenous people doing.

North American Indians had a dance for just about everything. Two examples which come to mind is the Buffalo dance of the Sioux/Cheyenne tribes, and then the more recent use of the Ghost dance. The Ghost dance was invented by a Navajho Medicine Man, and it quickly spread to other tribes. There were other examples of this type of spirituality spreading between Reservations for several decades later. That is well into the 20th century. One aspect which also was transplanted between different Tribes was the use of Peyote. The dances spread (and peyote) through various tribes by "Roadmen". These "Roadmen" were travelling Medicine men who would bring these sacred dances and substances from Reservation to reservation across the US and Cananda. This practice gave part of the conditions which were the basis of the formation of the North American Indain Church. I myself have been to sacred dances in Oklahoma, were substances and dance was used to create an effect. The focus of that effect depends on what the dance is for.

For the last several years I made an effort of studying African drumming. My Drum Master Amidou Djoup is from Sinegal. He had told me on more than one occasion that dance/drum was used as a dominant form of social interaction....and it goes hand in hand with the music. They did not have TV, so the social gathering is where everything form News to Entertainment occured.
And as well in their culture, there are dances for everything. In fact the rythyms are well known, and all it would take is a couple of drummers to begin playing a specific song. The people would begin to gather....and the dancing would ensue. I should mention as opposed to the free form existentialist dancing we do in this country...dancing in many other cultures had a set form. Though there was a point of "leading" in which a person could explore their own uniques style of expressing the moves. On top of this there were particular social dances that Woman would perform, and then some for the men. The energies that these dances raised can be seen as being the bridge between Spirituality and real Life. We tend to seperate these two....where as other cultures did (do ) not.

To be just I shoul dmention the Shakers and Quakers cult of the 19th century. In the case of the Shakers they maintained sexual abstinance and focused this energy into their dancing. I guess one could call them the 'Headbangers' of the 19th century!

I guess my point finally is that all dancing was (is) spiritual. It's up to the individual to realize it. The fact that we question this truth shows how far off the West is from it's natural roots.
A lot of this has to do with a major difference in Western Music and Indigenous Music. The West has a current tradition of breaking away from the "One beat" which is heard in Indigenous Music, where as tribal Music (from Africa to India) holds onto the 'drone' of the "One beat". I believe this also shows how Westernes(City living, SUV communters) had been raised to be a part from nature....where as Indigenous societies are a PART of nature :)

Freek Sista Props! Soulfire, DC

the Freek Sista's (of Sefirah and Tiggrr) are workin' it and takin' their magic of movement to a whole new level.
the level of teaching...

clearly guided by the core creatrix archetypal prowess, and powers, that run thru her, Sefirah stepped up and held space for the DC Soulfire community to become better acquainted with ourselves thru Esctatic Dance. Couple this with Tiggrr's style, perspectives, skills and gifts, they mirrored what was naturally rizing up in people, and (imo) met their shared intention to create change thru dance.

these women (in collaboration with Haj, Mikio and myself) built a solid container that pulled people into themselves, and guided us (a shamanic and acoustic drum and dance scene) thru many levels of esctatic engagement. They pushed us to play in shadows of self and soar in the zones where the eagles, the raven's and the hawks dance.

Sefirah and Tiggrr gave us maps and tools to return here anytime we want.
the streets of our daily exprience, r no longer the same...
tho they will return to Brklyn later today
.... the bass, and the shaking our of Badass BOOOT-TY....will remain.

CoSM FIre is an all night fire circle that invites you to participate in community ritual, vocal improvisation, fire dancing, performance art, collaborative art, acoustic musical offerings, drumming, dancing, chanting, story telling and so much more.

CoSM FIRE is a hybrid fire circle.
where we will drum and dance, but not all night.
where we will perform, teach, and play.
where we will offer classes, discussion forums, performance art and experiential playshops.
where we will build community and share food for the body, mind and soul.
where we will support the manifestation of the Permanent Home for the Chapel through Art in Action.

An Exploration of Radical Movement
with Sefirah and Tiggrr (Freek Factory, NYC)

I am offering a two-hour ecstatic dance workshop in Washington DC next weekend, Sat. 3/10, from 4-6pm. The class is open to anyone interested in changing consciousness and creating space for revelation and renewal. No prior dance training is needed; ecstatic dance has been used for millenia to help access our power to heal and to celebrate the sacred. This is a chance for all of you who have asked if I could teach you how to dance, to journey inside and find new ways to express your personal truth through movement. You will move with more attention and beauty both on the dance floor and in daily life.

This workshop is a collaboration with Mz. Imani, facilitator of SoulFire Inside in DC and SoulFire at CoSM in NYC, and Mz. Tiggrr, my fearless partner in Free(k) dance. The class can be taken on its own or in conjunction with the March 10 SoulFire. Come with an intention. Bring your badass self. The workshop includes an introduction to contact improvisational dance with Tiggrr. Radical movement led by me. Recorded music provided by Freek Factory. Live drumming by Imani and friends.

Thoughts from 2 years of Soul Fire DC

Greetings!

I am Katy, a co-instigator with MZI down in DC for SFI. Last night we celebrated our 2-year anniversary! Yeah us! I am *amazed* at how much our community has grown in the past 2 years...both in maturity and size. When we started SFI, it felt like we had created the container and the shell of the fire circle, and while many of the ingredients were present, they weren't fully activated. We had the fire, the drums, the dancing, the amazing beauty of the space, some chants and spoken word...but for the first year, it seemed like the magic of the fire circle was playing peek-a-boo with us...it would show up in powerful moments and hang around for a while, or it would be fleeting...it was ephemeral...and when it wasn't there, it almost felt like we were going through the motions, tilling the soil, tilling the soil, working the seeds with conscious energy, not knowing just when they'd rise up and bloom...but certain that at some point that it would.

Well, 2 years later, I can see that our tilling, our constant attentiveness, our openness to trying new things and experimentation, our communication with the community about what we're about and what we want/need to grow, and our conscious collaboration, has given bloom to an exquisitely beautiful organism that is fully activated. For me, WE'RE THERE. In our 3 hour circles, the "authentic" magical energy of the fire circle consistently shows up and is firmly PRESENT.

What I love is that this energy weaves its magic with everyone in the circle. In year 3, I look forward to the rise of a diversity of collaborations and instigations throughout the whole community...where the regular instigators (MZI, me, Gryffyn to name just a few) can step back a bit and allow room for the precious "Quaking" moments in lots of other folks. It's happening already...I just wonder if the fire circle container that we create at Soul Fire Inside could be a place where the magic is so potent that folks who think they'd never offer a public sharing, or lead a chant, or start a dance movement, find themselves doing it! Either through the leadings of the spirit and they are so in the flow that they're not even self-consicous about it, OR, the magic is so potent that even though there is some self-consciousness, they step out anyhow...and take a chance to share a thought/chant/prayer/whatever...and then see that moment set off an incredible chain-reaction of beautiful sharings and unfoldings. It happens already...I just look forward to it happening more! (I'm a glutton! ; ) And yeah, I'm open to the fact that maybe the Spirit is working on our behalf in ways we don't even know...and all is welcome...which means that NOT offerining a specifc sharing is totally welcome...BUT if you're reading this right now and this is resonating with you just a bit...like, 'you know, I've wanted to share something but....' well, all I've got to say is that you are WELCOME, SO WELCOME to share your bliss...and you've got support. In me, literally! Come find me...I'll hold your hand or watch your back or sing along... : ) YEAH!!!

I also want to say that our drumming has come a loooooong way, baby! I so enjoyed the grooves I was hearing last night. We really kept it together all night long. Even when the dununs weren't being played. There were a few moments that I thought the roof was gonna come off the place...seriously! Goes to show you what winter cabin-fever does to folks...whoah, the energy was incredible!!! And I REALLY enjoyed playing the djembe and dunun too...it'd been a while and I had so much FUN!!! : )

So...Happy 2! Happy SFI-DC! Happy THANKS to ALL who've made it happen -- especially Mz Imani ~ the Heart-est Working Woman with Fire Circles!
