I had a novel thought. How about sharing some actual MUSIC in this tribe?

I liked this video so much I watched it twice! Aside from being confined by the small television stage, the high energy performance is very similar to the way they appeared the first time I saw them live (in NYC at Forest Hills Tennis Stadium - 1969 or 1970). Legendary popular NY radio dj Frankie Crocker was in the first row. I had fifth row seats! (very sweet memories, I can tell ya').

Oh, a comedian, eh? :-) It's cool. I enjoy comedians.

I used the link to visit Amazon.com and listened to preview samples of a few songs. I've never really felt Erykah's music. What I heard was no exception. Thanks for the recommendation, though.

I have found music that I LOVE through the recommendation of a friend, in the past.

i think that if you didn't like her music in the past this album probably won't change that. i've always liked her as a talent even if i didn't like the album out at the time. i need to go back and listen to "mama's gun" which i didn't get when it came out.

i've really been into a lot of dance music (work-related for me) and been going backwards in time, too. i'm sorting thru a 70s period miles album for stuff i can play or just dig on. most of his stuff from that period is (frankly) weird, but there are moments of funk & beauty that sneak thru. i've also been trying to get "classic" 70s stevie too. i used to have it on vinyl (until i moved) and i need it on digital. annoyingly, a lot of the stuff i'm looking for isn't really that obscure, but not as easy to find on cd out here in spain. they seem to be pushing the compilations and often they'll edit tunes, like my wife's cd that has "living for the city" that is only about 3 or 4 mins long (the original is about 7mins.)

I have practically all of Stevie's 70s releases on CD, except for "Journey Through the Secret Life of Plants" (which I used to love) and "Talking Book". I've been slowly rebuilding a CD collection since ALL MY CDs (and loads of other things) were stolen in 2004. When I get in the mood to hear something I used to own is usually when I order it from Amazon.com.

[I don't know diddiley squat about how Amazon conducts business in Europe. Over here, their Amazon Prime plan is a REAL DEAL! For $79 a year, all your purchases are shipped to you via UPS Second Day Air at no charge. Since I just joined in April, that investment has already paid for itself.]

Do ya'll remember the "Sisters in the Name of Love" television special (1986) featuring Gladys Knight, Patti LaBelle and Dionne Warwick? My friends and I were all riveted to our television sets - just waiting (READ: expecting) Patti to turn the show out. For YEARS after that, all anyone could talk about was how Gladys Knight had turned the show out with her heartfelt cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive".

For those too young to remember, those who missed it or those who wish to relive a spectacular moment from the past, check out the video: youtube.com/watch

i have to admit given those names i would also have expected it to be patti's show. gladys has SERIOUS skillz though--peeps sleep on her. listen to "thank you falettin' me be mice elf" (original) and afterwards check gladys' version. i think it's hard to deny she improves on sly's take.

You've gotta give a brother LINKS, man. Were you referring to audio or video?

YouTube's search engine needs to be scrapped and started from scratch. There are several videos of Sly doing his "thank you falettin' me be mice elf". I couldn't find any video of Gladys Knight's cover (and have never heard it).

I learned something interesting on YouTube just now. Did ya'll know that Michael Jackson own's the rights to Sly's music? I knew he owned the Lennon-McCartney catalog, but dag! How can he own all that and STILL be $495 million dollars in debt (...and part of the country is crying 'cause they think Hillary Clinton has serious debt issues...sheesh!).
  • The Temptations (lead vocal by the late, great Eddie Kendricks) - You're My Everything - www.youtube.com/watch
    • From: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/You'...Everything (additional links included on original page)

"You're My Everything" is a 1967 hit single recorded by The Temptations for the Gordy (Motown) label. It is the first of three singles (and four songs) to be co-written for the group by Motown songwriter Roger Penzabene. It reached number three on the U.S. R&B chart and number six on the U.S. Pop chart. It would be the third single from the group's 1967 album The Temptations with a Lot o' Soul.

This is one of the small handful of a-sides lead by Eddie Kendricks since David Ruffin (who leads on the bridge and ad-libs on the outro) became the Tempt's lead singer, the last one was 1966s Get Ready. As the song's main narrator, Kendricks tells his girl just how much she really means to him.

"Now, I was blessed the day I found you,
Gonna build my whole world around you,
You're everything good girl, and you're all that matters to me"

There is real sentiment behind the song's words, as lyricist Penzabene wrote his songs as personal statements to his wife, to let her know how much he cared about. Later he would find out she had been unfaithful to him and publicized his pain in the songs, "I Wish It Would Rain" and "I Could Never Love Another (After Loving You)", to show her how much he was hurt by her. After both of those songs were completed and recorded, Penzabene committed suicide.
