This is the result of the voting:
    1. SoBay Flambe - 20 votes
    2. Out Of The Dust - 15 votes
    3. SoulFire - 14 votes
    4. RadiCal - 13 votes
    5. Burning Valley - 7 votes
    6. SoulDance On Fire - 5 votes
    7. SoulBorn - 3 votes
    7. (tie) BurnerFest - 3 votes
    7. (tie) Ethos - 3 votes
    8. PlayaTribe - 2 votes
    9. FreeDome - 1 vote

But, the regionals are discussing and feel like we need to disqualify #1 for two reasons: (a) It's not just a South Bay event, and we don't want to exclude Santa Cruz and East Bay from the name, and (b) All of the San Francisco burner events are called Flambes, and we don't want to be confused with them.

Sharkbite, someone else was doing the initial review of submissions, and I'm not sure how the "...into Eaden" got left out. As you can see, "Out of The Dust" was the #2 vote-getter, but I personally feel it would be more appropriate for a decom, rather than precom.

We can keep the discussion going here. We really did want it to be a community decision, but didn't expect to have to disqualify and/or come up with names other than what got submitted at Soulstance!

    Tawk amongst yourselves ....

Wow. I like the whole list. With that in mind, here's another name - Lupin Nite or Lupinite or LupinNite or however it would be spelled, with equal emphasis on the first and last syllable. Of the names already listed I like 'Souldance' as that's my favorite activity at Lupin. At least all the names aren't sexist like Burning Man.

I didn't know there was voting! But then again, I put my glasses away before I reached the front gate so I didn't catch any of the fine print.

Why are we ditching Soulstance again?

    Anyhow, I vote for SoulFire.

Soulstance as a name was suggested last year when Monterey was involved in the event, and we ran with it. But, we quickly found out that the name was already widely in use by self-help groups, artists, musicians, etc. (Google Soulstance and you'll see what I mean). And, we couldn't get the domain name Soulstance.com, Soulstance.org, or Soulstance.net.

When Monterey passed on participation this year and the East Bay stepped up, they suggested that the name be retired and not used for any future regional events. But, it was kinda too late to come up with a different name for 2009 so again we ran with it. We really liked the idea of asking the community to get involved in naming future events, so there was a suggestion box and a voting activity while we were all at Lupin this past weekend.

We can keep the voting open, though, for another week or two if we find something that makes everyone happy!

          Keep the names coming!

I am so partial to SoulStance though, I was there when the name was created and it is SO perfect for this event! SoulDance could work perhaps. I know that there will be something amazing that we all come up with -- yay and thanks for participating!

Also, there is already and event called Fire Mountain.

I guess I got there too early to see the voting board at the gate. I might have suggested:

        - Silicombustion
        - Silicon Semicombustion

Ok, but remember anything too "Silicon" or "Valley" needs to somehow include Santa Cruz and the East Bay, too!

Thought I would share with you something just posted about Alaska's first regional:

Those who attend this first Burning Man event in Alaska shall not only enjoy a great time in the moment but also will have glorious bragging rights forevermore. As (with apologies to Shakespeare) King Henry V said:

This day is call'd the feast of Holos.
S/he that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam'd,
And rouse him/herself at the name of Holos.
S/he that shall live this day, and see old age,
Will yearly on the vigil feast his/her neighbours,
              And say 'To-morrow is Holos.'
Then will he strip his sleeve and show his/her tattoos,
And say 'These I had on that first Holos day.'
Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot,
              But s/he'll remember, with advantages,
What feats s/he did that day. Then shall our names,
Familiar in his/her mouth as household words-
Harry the King, Raul and Funky Duck,
Stevendalf and Dorandalf, Daisy and TomTom-
Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red.
              This story shall the good parent teach his/her child;
And Holos shall ne'er go by in Alaska,
From this day to the ending of the world,
But we in it shall be remembered-
              We few, we happy few, we band of brothers 'n sisters 'n freaks in general;
For s/he to-day that parties with me Burning Man style
Shall be my bro, be s/he ne'er so vile,
              This day shall gentle his/her condition;
And nobles in England, Anchorage, and Fairbanks now-a-bed
Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not there at Holos,
And hold their manhoods, tatas, and other parts cheap whiles any speaks
That reveled with us upon that first Holos day!

              Burn on!

        Hmmm....

Thanks for the background on why we are renaming. I happened to be quite attached to Soulstance. I like what it implies.

Not that "Dust Booger Boogie" couldn't be a great name. It doesn't excite the best qualities in me like something from the soul. Falling on solstice is pretty huge too.

"Fire on a Roll" isn't so bad.... As long as it isn't in the hole.

Just adding some suggestions, but I'd still vote for Soulstance.
        • Re: New Name

          Tue, June 23, 2009 - 9:58 PM
Hmm, ok wait. I hate to be the one to throw a wrench in the works, but I like Soulstance. Who cares if it's taken? I did a google search and got 40,800 hits, which sounds like a lot, but in the world of 'net it's really not. Also our event is the 4th (tribe) and 10th (soulstanceinfo.com) entries. Not bad. As long as people can find it, why are we changing it again?

Also, did anyone check the new names. Woa, check out these google hits:

          Out of the Dust 334,000
          SoulFire 892,000
          RadiCal 6,900,000
          Burning Valley 6,400
Souldance On Fire 0 (but 296,000 for Souldance)
          SoulBorn 69,000
          BurnerFest 232
          Ethos 7,790,000
          PlayaTribe 769
          FreeDome 835,000

Sorry, just don't see the critical need for our own URL. Looking at these names on the list, it's obvious we can't get Eithos.anything, and probably a lot others. So the logic of changing the name to get a URL does not hold.

I vote for keeping it SoulStance. At the very least, it should be one of the options.

Some supporting points for Not The Playa.

                  1. Only 8160 google hits for the name.

                  2. It is NOT the Playa.

                  3. South, Bay, Santa Cruz, etc is less exclusive. Especially Soulstance covers the East Bay, South Bay, SC, SF, and other areas.

                  4. A name referring to fire is a advertisement. Since no fires are allowed at Lupin (I think). I mean one of my camp mates was called on by Cindy for smoking. Cindy says no smoking for it is a fire hazard and pointed out the helicopters.

                  5. In case we lose our regional status (it has happened before) we do not have a BM name.

                  6. We do not burning anything (well you know... wood or a man). We are in a forest on a hill. We have running water and toilets. A good restaurant. A short hop to Scotts Valley. Swimming pools. Plus unlike other regionals our event is being shared with non-Burners. Lupin advertise Soulstance as a Lupin event and not a BM event. Hence you have Lupin people (They are very welcome to come) attending.

So it is more then just a regional. Plus it is really not the Playa or like other BM events. What do you say?

                  =:)

                  C-

For what it's worth, there are no Google hits for "SolsLips"

It does invoke the sun, and lips, has no regional baggage, and does not mention fire.

                    • Re: New Name

How did Lips become part of the mix?

NOT the Playa is really cute. It evokes baby dinosaurs and gently refers to all those things we have that the Playa does not, as Cross suggested. And it hasn't been taken.

Lest people forget, I'm getting a strong sense that the Monterey regional folks have requested that the name Soulstance be retired since they had a hand in generating it and now they've removed from the event. Don't we have any responsibility to respect that?

Thanks for restating that point, Blysse.

One more comment: As long as our event is associated with the summer solstice, we won't be able to have fire. Two years ago we had fire, but on the topic of fire permits we asked forgiveness instead of permission (you can only really do that once!) When talking to the Santa Clara County fire chief about fire permits this year, we were told that they usually declare high fire season on June 1st (but this year, it was one week early). Once high fire season is in effect, there is no open flame permitted within 200 feet of "wildzone", which is basically anything south of the city of Los Gatos.

If we had the event in May, we could have burn barrels and an effigy. On the other hand, the very first Burning of the Man on Baker Beach was on the summer solstice. Just a little more "fuel for the fire" on coming up with a name .... :-p

I can see why. Cindy pointed out the helicopters doing fire drills. Burning a Man is good. Burning down a forest is BAD.

Let us not forget all the non-Burners who joined us. Many of then did not know or very little of Burning Man. Me and other Burners educated them and showed our good hospitality. One thing i did when I meet a non-Burner who was real cool was that I gave them a some Marti Gras beads I like to give out. I told them that gifting was a BM tradition.

Another group who joined us was the residents of Lupin. They were real cool. Matter of fact I tried to get breakfast while the restaurant was switching over from breakfast to dinner. They could not cook anything. However they had food left over from the buffet. They let me and anther Burner I met, Adam (different from the one in my camp), eat the buffet free!!! They even brought out brownies, cake, fruit, and stuff. They were way cool. I gave them all beads and a very nice tip. I told them gifting was a BM tradition. Later that night I met the residents of Lupin again at the Dirt Shack. They all gave me a hug. I told them what BM was about. They said we were cool and enjoyed the party. I gave them some more beads.

So Soulstance is more then just Burners. It is Burners getting together with other people. Yet not excluding anyone.

alot of events go on during May..I hesitate to change the date. There are really trippy names out there for other regionals that are pretty unique. I am not attached to Soulstance per say...my understanding is it was named to coincide with the solstice.

is there anything wrong with Solstinox..yeah over used I bet.
When I first the name Soulstance I stopped and thought okay what are we trying to communicate. my Soul is taking a Stance was what came to mind for me. Sol is spanish for Sun so it was perplexing with I heard that Soulstance was named for the solstice when I did not see the association. You could go with

              solstance
              sunstance
              sunsol
              sunfire
              sunflare
              Sunman

              to commicate the solstice

Actually, given that it's Lupin, and a naturist resort, and summer solstice, I think Sunburn is INCREDIBLY appropriate. I mean, I can't really get the sight of all those naked burnt bottoms playing water volleyball all weekend out of my mental eye (somebody pass me a long pointy stick to poke it out, pleeze).

                  Brilliant, Sunburn, really brilliant.
