Through 21 interviewees the film presents the philosophies that fueled the creation of the festival, and its evolution from a small gathering of friends to the largest “counter-cultural” event in North America. It offers a new perspective of the meaning of the event, and questions whether its organizers are more concerned about making sure the show is ready when the gate opens or if they still truly engage in building a community and fostering art.

Ok... I did Soulstance. Soulstance was the litmus test to see if I can handle camping, road trips, regionals, etc. The only real hitch I had in going was dialysis. I asked my dialysis center a month and a half notice for an early Friday time so I can be early on the road. They told me right off that are are full and most likely can not accommodate me.

No Problem....

One of the jobs my Social Worker is to place me it I want to go on vacation. Usually they ask for a month notice. I have her a month and a half notice. A week after asking I got a Google map of dialysis center in my area. The left the map while I was a sleep. I sorta figured she was showing the centers in my area.

Two week later I asked her on her progress. She said that it was up to me to find my own center (in actuality it is her job). She said she has over 300 patients and let her abled (me) patients to do the work. I was like FUCK!!!! So she gave me the number and I called.

I told the placement service my time and day. I told the the earliest time as possible. They told me they will place me in a week. After a week had passed they did not call. So I called them. They said they could not find a place for the FIRST SHIFT. First shift was at 6:30 am. That would be grand but I would take anything early. I told them that I wanted the earliest time possible but they put down first shift. I told them to change it. They said they would get back to me in a week.

A week later (two weeks before Soulstance) I called the placement service again. Once again they messed up. They still had me looking for first shift on the computer again. They never made the correction. They said they will pass the matter to the head coordinator and to call back in a week. So I did... but I asked the nurses and NOT the Social Worker for a early placement. They said that they will see what they can do for me but no promises.

Another week later I called the placement people. Once again they still had me for first shift. Finally I got someone who knows what they were doing. She fixed the time and broaden in my area to 25 miles. Apparently they were only looking in town. I did not mind going a few miles away. They said they will call me ASAP.

On the Monday before Soulstance I talked to the nurses at my dialysis center. They said an early person is now in the hospital and I can have his time. It was at 10:15. They also said that if he is discharged I would loose that slot. I told them go for it. I was going to talk to the Social Worker but she was not there.

On Tuesday before Soulstance I got a call from my Social Worker. The placement people called her and said that they had a spot. The problem was she did not know where or when.

On Wednesday I got another call my Social Worker. She said they found a spot in Benicia. The problem is that Benincia is across the bridge and too far away. Never mind the opposite direction of Santa Cruz!!! Plus I wanted to rest after dialysis. I told the social worker to hold on to the spot for the nurses (doing me a favor) was trying to get me a spot.

On Thursday the Nurses finalized the spot.

Friday I got my dialysis but 45 mins late.

This worries me for my next vacation. The question is that can I get the time and place I want. Will I have to place a vacation around dialysis rather dialysis around vacation. Home Dialysis was going to get me around this. However instead it really prevented me from going anywhere.

Time for this Sidhe to think out of the box!!!
I was invited to Dirt Camp but I could not find them. Then was my first trip to Soulstance. I never been to Lupin before. So Thor (my truck) and I drove up those back trail roads to the camp ground high on the hill. The problem was that there was no lights and all the camp sites seems to be filled. As I go to the upper lever two girls came out yelling that there is a spot near them. So I walked up the hill to check the sight out. When I got up there I was greeted by this most righteously beautiful girl with great tits (no... I am not objectifying she just got them!). She said to me...

You know I really been through a lot. I have helped people, nature and the universe a lot too. I REALLY deserved this!!! I really did. I never get much but I finally did. This weekend will be one if not "THEE" most memorable weekend I had in my live.

Hey all...
Just a note about directions. If you are traveling south on 17 you may want to take Bear Creek Road (Alta Bridge exit) instead of Idlewild. The traffic can be heavy making that left off 17 onto Idlewild and scary.

If you take the Bear Creek road exit, you will just cross over the freeway and take the road right (parallel to the freeway). It's a divided road there. You will pass the Fire Station. Just keep going on Old Santa Cruz road. You'll pass Lexington School and a wood shingled water tank...(just to give you a few landmarks). Then you will see the left turn onto Aldercroft.

It's almost here!!! One of the best kick-ass parties of the summer. Dust off that burning man gear; okay, maybe don't dust it off, it's just gonna get dusty again soon! This is going to be a GREAT weekend of fun, sun, friends, music, dancing, etc. etc. AND one of the ways this event is so awesome is from all you guys pitching in and making it happen. This is your event, and in true burner fashion, you bring the fun! So let's welcome all our friends with some fantastic greeter fun!

If you can donate a few hours of your time to welcome your fellow burners and friends, please contact me (Yvonne, aka Ynot!) directly at
yescause2002@yahoo.com and let me know your preference of when you are available. We need greeters from 9 am on Friday through Saturday night/Early Sunday morning 8 am ish.

If you are on the fence about attending due to finances, this is a good way to defer some or all of the cost with greeter shifts in those wee hours of the morning on Friday/Sat and Sat/Sun from 2am-8am (2-3 hour shifts depending on how many people sign up)
East coast burner here, super excited that I have stumbled across this seemingly smaller regional event that may not be shoulder to shoulder? Although the community here is beautiful in all of its blinky-glory, I have found that it is difficult to find an event that isn't super crowded, being so close to the 'hub' of the burner community (I am probably not on the right mailing lists either :-/ )

My main query into this wonderful looking event, is what sort of music is usually blasted through the sound pumps? I know that the west coast is thriving off of the whole mash-up, breaks, glitchy, etc. business, but are there going to be some DJ's who would be spinning some minimal tech. tech house, dubstep, or even, dare i ask, psy-trance?
If you haven’t registered yet, don’t put it off! We will sell out at 500 registrations. So far we’ve got over 20 activities, theme camps and art installations … come on, join the party! soulstanceinfo.com/registration.html

Camping fees are in addition to the registration (see soulstanceinfo.com/camping.html) Remember, work exchanges are available to completely cover your camping fees (please contact Lupin directly at 408-353-9200 about those).

GATE OPENS at 12:00 noon on Friday, June 19th. RV and tent sites will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis unless you are a registered theme camp.

CARPOOLING is strongly encouraged, as parking spaces are limited. If you’re tent camping, you’ll want to unload your gear near a tent site and then move your car to one of the parking lots.

LIVE MUSIC Friday night and Saturday afternoon on the restaurant lawn. DJs all weekend at the Dirt Shack. Pink Floyd & Green Tea, Naked Twister, Burning for Beginners, and Erotic Fetishwear Making are just a few of the activities on tap! The list is growing daily … add yourself to the what/where/when!

And, this event can’t happen without everyone volunteering and participating. We’ll need greeters, rangers, gate, parking and LNT helpers. If you do it on the playa, bring it to Soulstance! Send an email with the subject “Participate” to: info@soulstanceinfo.com

Are you one of those people who’s been chomping at the bit to get a place at Soulstance 2009 (being held June 19-21)? Well, we’ve been working hard behind the scenes to get the web site ready for you (many thanks to our webmaster, Sparkinzi!)

Soulstance is a 2-day, 3-night official Burning Man Regional Event, and this will be the third year in a row that we’ve celebrated a burning solstice at Lupin Lodge in Los Gatos. If you didn’t make it last year, ask around … it was spectacular (300+ attendees, music and workshops all day and night, art cars and costumes and camping, oh my!) This year, we’re hoping to make it bigger and better than ever, but it can’t happen without YOU!

Gear up for the playa, do some practice CAMPING (shake the dust out of your tent, test your air mattress, see how warm your playa coat really is!), PARTICIPATE in the creation of a playa-rific experience for everyone who attends. Want to DJ? Practice your poi? Have a new ART project or EL WIRE creation you’d like to show off? Come to give to your community and BE DELIGHTED by your fellow participants!

You can now register on the website, www.soulstanceinfo.com. Pre-registration is $15, and helps the regions cover our costs for insurance, paypal, websites and such. Camping fees due to Lupin will be the same as last year, but the first 100 people to pre-pay their camping fees will get a reduced rate. See www.soulstanceinfo.com for more details!

I heard about the June Burn from Burning Regions. Question

Is this like other burns with theme camps? I had a great one planned for Flip Side (Austin) but due to the economy and my studies I can't make it this year. Would love to do even part of it for another burn.

part of this South Bay Community for many years and anything anyone
can do to help, no matter how small, please consider - his kidney's
are failing and he needs dialysis three times a week.

In our year-round nature of giving, please consider this on your list.

********

To all Burners,

I am writting this request, for fellow burner, my friend, Mike
Aquino, aka 'Skid'. Many of you know Skid very well, for those of you
who don't, let me introduce you.

Skid formed K-SVERT 106.5 FM in 1997 with his childhood friend, Tom
Sherry (PlayaMonkey). A humble one watt of radio broadcast,
entertained Black Rock City, and was coined the "One watt
Flamethrower". Skid pioneered Burningman radio, and in 1998 was
responsible, for assigning broadcast frequencies to other camps, who
wanted to followed his lead, and desired to start their own radio
station. To this day, to broadcast @ BRC, you must receive your
frequency assignment from Skid.

In 2002, He co-founded Burning Silicone, the south bay's own region.
(name changed to South Bay Burners in 2008). Skid served as the first
Co-Regional, with Sandra McBride (Gidget), until both retired in 2006.
His leadership and guidance, enable his region to grow into the major
contributor to the Burningman project, that it is today. Meanwhile,
K-SVERT grew into the largest & most powerful radio station on the
playa. Building our landmark tower in 2002, and adding our performance
& shadow stages in 2003. Since 2003, K-SVERT been a presence on the
Esplanade, with a 60' high flashing beacon, guiding the masses home
during whiteouts. Skid is the Mayor of K-SVERT, and serves on our
Board of Directors.

Skid's had his hand in helping others with their projects. He
designed the mini-golf course for 'Lawngames' in 2002 & 2003. In 2001
he designed & built 'Betelguise the Flaming Art Car' . Skid was a
major contributor to Burning Silicone's collaborative project the
"Pagoda of Infinite Reflection" in 2004. When in 2005 we were placed
next door to Deathguild's Thunderdome, Skid proposed we build our own
version, only smaller, and with rabbits. Thumperdome was born.

In June of this year, Skid's life took a turn. He was admitted to the
hospital with anemia and kidney failure. (Skid has had type 2 diabetes
for the past ten years). His condition was dire, he received blood
transfusions, and suffered a very bad seizure. For 72 hours, it was
BAD. We thought we might lose him. His short term memory was gone.
Those of us who visited him, were forgotten once we left the room
(this scared me the most). It took weeks for him to be strong enough
to leave the hospital. He will endure receiving dialysis 3 times a
week, for 3 hours at a time, for the rest of his life. Or until he
receives a kidney transplant. He is currently on a transplant waiting
list.

He was determined to attend the burn, whatever it would take. He was
there for two days. We shuttled him to Reno, Saturday morning for
dialysis, and got him back before the burn. He was very thin & weak,
but he was so glad to be home, even if only for two days.

Once back in the default world, Skid had two stints placed into his
heart in October (in preparation for the future transplant). Things
were starting to falling into place, then, Skid lost his job. Along
with his job, Skid lost his health care. He has sent out hundreds of
resumes, but received only one interview. Until he can secure another
job, (hopefully with health coverage that will cover his pre-existing
condition), he continues to receive the care he urgently needs through
COBRA. His COBRA payments are over $400 per month.

To help Skid make these payments, a fundraiser, "Mikeapalooza" has
been scheduled for December 29, 2008 @ Britannia Arms, Almaden, San
Jose. Skid's close friends, PlayaMonkey & SassyJill, (Tom & Jillian)
have set up a "Mike Aquino COBRA" fund (The MAC Fund) to collect other
donations, For PayPal: Send money to; Mikeapalooza@gmail.com as
http://www.evite.com:80/pages/invite/viewInvite.jspinviteId=OMRJNSKXLYFGBGTXHBFY&li=iq&src=email
On a personal level, Mike has always been there for me, my brother
from a different mother. Come out & help us celebrate & help Mike
continue on his road to recovery. Mike has devoted much of his time to
helping others (and Burningman), now it's time for us to be there for him.

Thank You,

THE AFTERPARTY!!!

we have just secured the ol factory cafe (www.olfactorycafe.com) in sand city from 11p-4a

they will be offering a wine/beer bar, coffee/tea bar and midnight breakfast

this is a beautiful space, and as it stands, we dont have any issues with fire spinning in front of the venue - there is a residential house across the street, so if they get fussy with sound, that might be our only problem - otherwise, this whole area is industrial

lets support our burner-friendly businesses by taking the party to the ol factory cafe!!!

this is about a mile and a half from the beach burn, so its a totally walkable distance if you are too drunk to drive!!!

ALSO!!! dont forget www.mpyreburn.com to make your donations - or just bring 10$ per person to the event - the more people that do their donations ahead of time, it helps us plan on how many people are going - all 10$ donations get some REALLY GROOVY SCHWAG!!!

this is going to be on del monte beach, next to whart 2, the window on the bay - this is a great time to bring art, community, free expression and LEAVE NO TRACE together to show monterey what its all about

we are going to be on the beach from 10a-10p - a full day of community, dance, art, performances, fire dancing, drummers, musicians, djs, random acts of radical expression, costumes and more!!

we are requesting a 10$ donation per person to help cover permit costs, insurance costs, etc - all 10$ donations get some really groovy schwag - to donate please go to www.mpyreburn.com and click the paypal link - there will be a will call list at the greeters station

i know many of you are unable to make it, but for those of you that can, this is a great time to come together as a community and enjoy our surroundings and each other and have a lot of fun in the process - everyone is able to participate whether that is just showing up and bringing some food to share or installing your art project on the beach for everyone to enjoy

please contact me if you are interested in participating at any level just send me an email letting me know what you would like to be a part of - fire safety, set up, recycling, tear down, greeting, etc.

love you all and even if you cant make it, spread the word and channel the good mojo for the m-pyre beach burn on july 26th!

I was hanging out with a certain young lady (her name will remain unspoken) on Friday night and we went to visit Hotel do Amor and while we were talking one of the people partying there started fondling this girl's bottom. I know for a fact that he had never met her before and just felt it was his right to put his hands all over her ass. I had to smack his hand away three times.
If you don't know somebody and they haven't asked you to, you have no right to fondle their bottom. Have some effing respect, please.

From BWB web site:
http://www.burnerswithoutborders.org/bwb-call-to-community-action

“For the past three years, regional groups all over the world have been bringin' it and making a difference by taking initiative and volunteering their efforts in BWB's Cinco de Playa Clean Up Day. This year, volunteers removed over 2 tons of debris from the parks and beaches across the world and had fun doing it! But the impact goes beyond just this one day. After these events, people inevitably want to do more and organize ongoing projects with their community that continue to make a huge impact.”

~~~~~~~~~PARTICIPATE ~ BE A PART OF THE COMMUNITY ~ GIVE BACK~~~~~~~~~
Let’s work together as a community and participate! We are so fortunate to have such a unique place like Lupin to be together & share our creativity!
There are some things that are in need of attention on the grounds, so…LET'S GIVE BACK & BRING IT! BRING YOUR ENERGY! BRING YOUR POSITIVITY! BRING YOUR PARTICIPATION!
WHAT: Bring your self! Bring your friends! Bring your yard tools! OUTDOOR CLEAN UP/LEAF BLOWING/FIRE CLEARING
WHEN & WHERE: Saturday, June 21st, we will be meeting on the lawn by the restaurant at 9:45am. Heading off to work together for an hour from 10am-11am. THE MORE PEOPLE THE BETTER! WE CAN ACCOMPLISH A LOT AS A GROUP IN AN HOUR!
NEED: Hand Clippers, Hedge Trimmers, Weed Whackers, Hand Saws, Gloves, and water. SOME TOOLS ARE AVAILABLE, BUT WE NEED MORE.
SEE YOU THERE!!!
***We are also planning a much bigger clean up event that will take place this year. Most likely a beach clean up in Santa Cruz or Monterey Bay! Stay tuned for more information on this soon.***
