Waltz the night away in a beautiful candlelit ballroom with the San Francisco Bay Area’s most glamorous Undead at the 16th Annual Le Bal des Vampires.

Suggested costume is evening dress of the century and country of your “rebirth.” This may include dress uniform, period costume (authentic or fantasy), vintage attire, or modern evening dress. There is no dress code for the ball (We certainly don’t expect Spike to attend in black tie!), but you will see some of the most gorgeous and creative costumes of the social season at Le Bal des Vampires.

This year there will once again be simultaneous dancing on two separate floors:

Our band in the elegant upstairs ballroom is the stylish but always dashing chamber ensemble Bangers & Mash. As usual, haunting waltzes dominate the program, but the evening will feature a variety of dance music from across the centuries – from 18th century Baroque contredanses to 19th century Victorian rotary and Viennese waltzes, polkas, and mazurkas; to elegant early 20th century tangos, blues, and fox trots and even some classic rock and roll Swing. Please note that the band’s first dance set will start at 7:45 pm sharp – 15 minutes earlier than usual. The dance sets will be unusually long, even by Bangers & Mash’s high standards, so if you do plan to dance, please be certain to wear shoes or boots you can actually dance in.

For those preferring a more modern style of dance music and free-style dancing, join us downstairs in Le Bal des Vampires’ Dracula’s Daughter’s Discotheque for a wonderfully varied repertoire of music to stir the blood and spirit from 6:30 p.m. to Midnight. Hosted by our principal DJ, Dark Moon, the disco also features a no-host (cash) bar and light refreshments for our mortal guests.

Our half-time show in the ballroom is a performance by the celebrated Le Theatre des Vampires. Not recommended for the faint of heart but highly recommended for fans of the genre.

This Sunday at the Box: A Tribute to Sean Keily

It has been a year since the passing of our friend Sean "Gobo" Keily,
and the Box will be holding a small benefit this Sunday in his honor.

We will be starting the night off as early as we are allowed: 9pm, so
those of you who cannot normally make it out on Sunday nights can come
in for at least a quick visit.

There will be an altar with candles for you to light if you wish,
pictures of Sean, a book for his friends to write in (which we will be
giving to Sean's family). Suggested donation of $5 at the door - all
proceeds will go directly to Sean's family to help them pay for some
of the debt that remains, and hopefully help get him a tombstone.

We hope to see you there!

I'll be demonstrating the LOOPERLATIVE this coming Friday, Saturday and

I would like to thank everyone who came out to Tuesday Night GOFFee this year! We had some great times, some sad times, some hardcore drama and gossip, but always the boots. We have teh sexiest boots ever! And boobs. And Rob's jello. And brownie bites nomnomnom..

GOFFee officially ends when the weather gets cold & unpredictable. We tried sitting outside in December a few years ago, freezing in our parkas and fishnets. Not a good idea lolz.. Of course, there will still be Goths chillin' at the Pruneyard Coffee Society on Tuesdays, but when it's cold & rainy be prepared to sit indoors and not smoke (as much). Oh noes!! Can it be done?!? :P

Rather than let the weekly GOFFee spirit languish, this year we are planning some wintertime mischief! Some of the Winter GOFFee Events in the works:

Sir Percy and Lady Blakeney and her grace, Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, request the pleasure of your company at a ball in honour of His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales. M. Chauvelin, the witty but ruthless French Ambassador, will be there. Will his arch-nemesis – the daring superhero and master of disguise, the Scarlet Pimpernel –
also make an appearance? And what will the beautiful Georgiana wear to the ball? Only time will tell.

The Duchess decrees that late 18th century, Directoire, or Regency costume is admired but not required (The year is 1792 but she won’t hold you to that) and, as usual, modern evening dress is also welcome (Sir Percy has just invented it, after all!).

The celebrated chamber ensemble Bangers & Mash plays an evening of gorgeous waltzes and dashing but elegant 18th century French and English country dances. There will be a pre-ball workshop in 18th century country dance and early Waltz – highly recommended since we’ll be teaching some of the ball dances during the class. Those of you planning to arrive fashionably late, however, can be assured that all country dances will also be briefly taught and called during the ball.

Punch and a complimentary light buffet of French and English snacks will be served (As always, your potluck contributions are much appreciated).

The original “Scarlet Pimpernel” novel by Baroness Orczy is a fun read and available both online and in most good public libraries and there are several sequels still in print.

I, along copious lyrical collaborations with the Santa Cruz Goth/Industrial community
wrote a tongue in cheek and loving homage to our scene called
"Put On Your Stompy Boots". I'm finishing up the recordings of the instrumental tracks
and...........

This coming Sunday night, January 11th at STATIC at the BOX (at the Blue Lagoon on the Pacific Garden Mall
in downtown Santa Cruz) directly at MIDNIGHT I will be recording the final CHANTED CHORAL VOCALS
for this piece of music with anyone who wants to show up and be on the recording.

I'd love to encourage anyone who wants to , to come down and lend their vocals to this recording which we'll release
officially at the 10th Annversary of the BOX later this spring.

You just need to sing (or chant) lustfully and at the top of your lungs...........I'll conduct us all.............we'll do it
in five minutes and then drink copious quantities of alchohol and celebrate together.

These will be the microcephalic words that we'll record as a huge chorus.

Photoshoot at Evergreen Cemetery?

So... it is dreary, rainy, foggy and wet outside.

That is PERFECT weather for a moody photoshoot at my favorite cemetery.

I am now the proud wielder of a Nikon D40 camera that I will gladly bring with me... but life is too short for self portraits and stumbling through my brand new (and very first) DSLR on my own. Anyone else care to join me?

I set my own hectic schedule, so weekdays are fine for me. Open to a weekend, too, but I don't know how many of those anyone has to spare before the holiday hectic reaches its zenith.

This time, the cover will be $5 at the door or $3 if you bring us a cool piece of broken electronics to be used for display/play time...:) The more interesting the better, I'm thinking computer guts, grinding gears, and things that one might find if they were walking through the "Event Horizon". This is your chance to really be a part of the event, make your own decor, and hellish suits. Extinction, should feel like a abandoned, angry, gutted spacecraft, left in the guts of Hell.

I'll be performing the show that I performed in 8 countries in Scandinavia, Northern Europe and the UK
this coming Saturday, Dec 20th to open up CLOCKWORK at the Seabright Bar and Lounge
(529 Seabright, Santa Cruz)

I'll play directly at 9 p.m. and then would love it if people would come join me for dancing
to Goth/Steampunk and Swirly Industrial directly afterwards.

This will be the first time I have performed the entire Dayglo Orange Plastic show in Santa Cruz .
I will only use Dayglo Orange Plastic as a source of sound in an hour long show that is very
unusual and, hopefully, very creative.

I hope you can come down and check it out.

Admission is 5 bucks but you are let in for FREE if you are attired in goth/industrial and/or steampunk attire.

WHEN: Friday, December 12th starting at 7pm

WHERE: Meet up at Tao Tao in Sunnyvale, 175 S Murphy Street

WHAT: Santa Crawl up and down the peninsula, with a super-secret list of destinations to be visited. If you can’t meet up at Tao Tao, be advised that the “schedule” is open to liberal interpretation by Santa. There is no Santa to call the day of. Ask your friends if they are going, and keep in touch by cell phone to hear where the next destination is.

WHY: Because if you start out in the Southbay on Friday, you can crawl all the way up to the San Francisco Santa Con on Saturday

HOW MANY: Could be 4 or 40 Santas, that’s up to you now, isn’t it?

WEAR: Holiday apparel is mandatory! A Santa hat is not enough. Buy a Santa suit. Make a Santa suit. Paint on a Santa suit. Steal a Santa suit.
No money? Be creative! Glue cotton balls to red long johns. Make it purple. Make it pink. Already have a Santa suit? Make a spare so Santa can assimilate strangers. Don’t forget layers for being inside and outside, and most importantly GOOD WALKING SHOES.

BRING: Money for drinks, a water bottle (to pace yourself!), snacks if you don’t want to buy appetizers, toys/candy canes/holiday cheer to share with everyone we encounter. Be prepared to buy a $10 CalTrain pass between Sunnyvale & Redwood City (we’ll also stop at places in-between!)

Waltz the night away in a beautiful candlelit ballroom with the San Francisco Bay Area’s most glamorous Undead at the 15th Annual Le Bal des Vampires held once again in the Alameda Elks Lodge, a stately neo-Colonial mansion with a stunning Edwardian ballroom, a photogenic Edwardian parlor and staircase, and a film noir style discotheque.

Suggested costume is evening dress of the century and country of your “rebirth.” This may include dress uniform, period costume (authentic or fantasy), vintage attire, or modern evening dress. There is no dress code for the ball (We certainly don’t expect Spike to attend in black tie), but you will see some of the most gorgeous and creative costumes of the social season at Le Bal des Vampires.

This year there will once again be simultaneous dancing on two separate floors:

Our band in the elegant upstairs ballroom is the stylish but always dashing chamber ensemble Bangers & Mash. As usual, haunting waltzes dominate the program, but the evening will feature a variety of dance music from across the centuries – from 18th century Baroque contredances to 19th century Victorian rotary and Viennese waltzes, polkas, and mazurkas; to elegant early 20th century tangoes, blues, and fox trots and even some classic rock and roll Swing. Please note that the band’s first dance set will start at 7:45 pm sharp – 15 minutes earlier than usual. The dance sets will be unusually long, even by Bangers & Mash’s high standards, so if you do plan to dance, please be certain to wear shoes or boots you can actually dance in.

For those preferring a more modern style of dance music and free-style dancing, join us in Le Bal des Vampires’ Dracula’s Daughter’s Discotheque in the hall’s Ratskellar for a wonderfully varied repertoire of music to stir the blood and spirit from 6:30 p.m. to Midnight. Hosted by principal DJ, Dark Moon, the disco also features a no-host (cash) bar and light refreshments for our mortal guests.

Our half-time show in the ballroom is a performance by the celebrated Le Theatre des Vampires. Not recommended for the faint of heart but highly recommended for fans of the genre. I got a cool pair of purple goth pants (brand new) that I want to give away for free to someone in this scene

I bought a pair of dark purple, skinny legged pants here while back at hot topic.

They were a sized 15 woman, but my wife accidentally shrank them in the drier
when I forgot to take them out as I was planning and they shrank down to about
a size 13.

They're really cool pants and I'm heartbroken, but I won't be able to fit into them in this lifetime.

They have small cute little skeleton rivets and they would fit a
Size 13 woman or a size 34/32 man (and they are unisex in a slime cut)

They are brand new!!!!!

SF/MONTEREY BAYS Annonymous GOTH/INDUSTRIAL CARPOOLING project announced

The impact of a radically slowing economy and high gas prices has effected everyone in our scenes
which have all scene some attrition in the past couple of years and have reduced the number of
people travelling between scenes in the two Bay Areas (Montery/SF)

So instead of just allowing inner city transport between scenes to just dwindle to nothing,
We want to be proactive about encouraging carpooling between cities in an effort to increase attendance
and lower people's costs.

Santa Cruz has moved it's long running (almost 10 years now) Goth club to Sunday nights, specifically
to make it possible for people in SC to visit Death Guild or B.A.G.G. in SF and people in the Bay Area to visit the BOX in
SC without there being a conflict.

Consequently, There are now at least three weekly goth events and several monthly goth/industrial events in the TWO BAY AREAS for people who want to get their goth/industrial on and several

To save increasing travel expenses between cities we would like to propose
an EMAIL CARPOOLING scheme that is ANNONYMOUS , so that people
who want to participate can send their email addresses (and transportation needs and capabilities)
to one central location that is both ANNONYMOUS and hence ENTIRELY NON-SPAMMABLE.

In Defense of the BLUE LAGOON, Freddy, it's owner and DJ YUMA from a former sceptic

I had a really good, long talk with Freddy, the owner of the BLUE LAGOON (as well as Yuma) today.

In that talk I changed most of the angry assumptions that I and most everyone in our scene had made about the current switch to Sundays; conflicts with the pre-booked live rock bands and Yuma's theme night, MAYHEM.

This will take a bit of explaining, but please bear with me.

If you don't want to read the long explanation of why almost all of our assumptions were initially incorrect, please let me assure you
that

1) Freddy really values our scene and considers us to be family as we come close to celebrating our tenth year being hosted by the Blue Lagoon.
2) He also said that he agreed with Grey, myself and the current DJs in our reasons for wanting to move the BOX to Sundays so that it would cease to conflict with DEATHGUILD in San FRancisco.
3) He also said, unequivocally that there is not to be a continuing and potnetially competing theme night (MAYHEM) on Mondays as we had
assumed initially
4) Several bands had already been contracted to play on Sunday nights, a committment which Freddy felt compelled to honor. They have been booked for months before we made our request to change nights.
5) Freddy has assured me that once those final committments are honored that we will have Sundays as our own without fear of double booking.

Essentially, we got every single thing that we had hoped for.

Because of Sean's passing; the passing of the guard to the people he put in charge of the club (Julian and Brynn); lagging attendance and
changes in our entire goth/industrial scene (all over not just California but the whole planet), most of us were really insecure when these changes occured.

I, myself, assumed that YUMA had engineered the change to launch a competing club (untrue as it turns out and in an email message I recieved from him, he assured me that he was fully committed to the BOX's continued existence and really happy that we are at the club and has not intention of trying to 'take over'......I believed him, completely and appreciated his taking the time to write me and to have Freddy call me personally)

I realize now that we all made a lot of assumptions that were reasonable to make without communicating with the principals:

I, like most people, assumed that we were of grave danger of losing our home at the BOX. I was wrong as it turned out.

I, like most people, assumed that the first conflicts with live bands playing indicated an insensitivity by Freddy and the Box to our entire scene. I was wrong as it turned out.

I, like most people, assumed that when Megabyte Mike posted about Yuma's MAHYEM even of electro clash on the previously abandonded Monday night, represented an attempt to take over our scene.
I was wrong as it turned out.

In conclusion, I can tell everyone that I think we could not have had a better turnout of our situation with the BOX.
It shocked me to be completely honest, but Freddy was extremely
sweet when he talked to me today. I did not in any way, have a sense that he was being disengenuous, either.

He said that he loved us and considered us family.

That's quite a thing to say by any club owner, and it is backed up
by the fact that we've had the longest running home for our Goth scene of anything in the Bay Area (except for maybe Death Guild).

So, as much as I dig Cynergoth, I do NOT agree with her that the Blue Lagoon has fucked us over and needs to be abandoned.

On the contrary, I think that given diminishing numbers at the club in the last couple of years, it's pretty damned amazing that
Freddy, Yuma, Sal, Meghan and all the people at the Blue have such affection for us and actively want to see us succeed.

Our whole scene is facing a challenge. I was just in London and the scene there is not NEARLY as good as it is here.............They have gone to Rave/Techno half of the night in the remaining weekly Goth club in the city (that's of 9 million people, folks...........the UR location of Goth in the world)

So, do we have work ahead of us if we are to try and increase our attendance and breathe new life into our scene...........
YES, by all means.

And that dialogue, I believe should exist here on this forum and also
at Tribe.net where there are several hundred SCGoth members (and I'll cross post both places from now on).

So, I'll see all of you beloved people Sunday at the Box with bells and whistles on.

And to the people who have been very vocal on this list but haven't been to the club in a really long time, I would highly
encourage you to come back and become active again in this
community.

Let's put aside our past hurts and be what this community has always been: Dark, Sexy, Creative, Friendly, Passionate and Stompy Boot
Dance Crazy.

I have just returned from headlining 15 live looping festivals and events
in 8 countries in Scandinavia, Germany and the British Isles during
a long 2 month tour.

On that tour, the TRANSPARENT DAYGLO ORANGE PLASTIC tour
I came up with an unusual found sound/live looping show that
utilizes a lot of Dayglo Orange Plastic under
black lights (and bells and tuning forks
and vibrators and trumpet and overtone flutes and extended vocal
techniques and beat boxing and and and......

I will be performing this show at the very final performance at
the HIDE GALLERY in Santa Cruz, tonight (FRIDAY, July 11th)
from 10-11 p.m.

The HIDE , in case you don't know, is in the 2nd block
of FRONT STREET just South of LAUREL STREET downtown.

FRONT STREET curves to the right as you approach the hill
and that's where I'll be performing along with an amazing
electronica/pop band from LA, WOVEN (11 p.m.-12 a.m.).

They are one of my very favorite musical groups and they rarely
play in Northern California.

There will also be painters and airbrushers and dancers all
performing and creating while I play so it should be
a wonderful send off to one of the most creative institutions
that this town has seen in a long time.

Satori news for July-August

Hey everyone!

The Blank Club, the venue we hold Satori at, has some scheduling conflicts for the month of July. As of right now, it looks doubtful that we'll have a Saturday night date in July...HOWEVER!...we're pretty sure we'll have Wednesday, July 30th for Satori. We'll know more in the next few days, but I didn't want anyone thinking we weren't going to have a night in July. We're hoping this is just a one-time thing, as the Blank Club has been wonderful to us the past 2 years we've been there.

We've already got our August date, though, which is Saturday, August 30th. This will be an extra special night, though, since it's our 3RD ANNIVERSARY! That's right, as of August, Satori's been around for 3 years! Some of you might remember our first year at the Savoy, a small dive bar in Santa Clara. It was a fun little venue, but obviously doesn't have the draw the Blank does, and Tuesday nights sucked compared to Saturdays! We're very fortunate to have gotten a night at the Blank, and we hope to stay there for a long time! We hope everyone can come out and celebrate with us.

We can really use your help in Santa Cruz this coming week

The Box, the longest running Goth club in this area (over 10 years now)
is fighting for it's life with it's home, the Blue Lagoon.

Diminished attendance has made the owner loose confidence in our scene
(though we've made the club a lot of moolah over the last ten years).

We've moved the club to Sunday nights (from it's long running Monday night time slot)
so now, for the first time, there is no conflict with people wanting to attend Death Guild
in San Francisco.

So, if you have felt at all like going to a fun Goth/Industrial event over here but have put it off, we'd love it if you would 'invade' us as we have done several times with South Bay
Clubs in the past.

The Box, now on Sundays!

As many of you may have heard, starting this Sunday, June 29th, The Box will be moving to Sunday nights!

Some of you might have mixed feelings about the move, mainly thats it's a break from tradition. This is going to be a good thing. We will no longer be in competition with Death Guild, several weeks out of the year the following Monday is a holiday which makes Sunday a weekend night, and it's generally more acceptable to be tired at work on a Monday than a Tuesday.

The timing is strange, with The Box moving to Sundays and Revenant losing it's spot at the Blue coinciding with Sean leaving us. We were told we were being moved the Monday before he passed, and Revenant the week before that. So in defense of Fred (who owns the Blue) who is shuffling things to make the most of the declining economy, these changes were not due to Sean's passing.

We had requested this move about six months ago, at the same time we took away our cover, so when we were given the choice between sharing the Club on Monday nights with a different set of normal DJs in the front room, the choice was clear. However, we will still have to share the night occasionally with off-genre touring band, but if we get the crowd large enough and they protest these bands loud enough we can probably get the Blue to reconsider.

This next month is going to be a period of adjustment for everyone, so we ask you all to bear with us through the transition. Nobody want's the SC goth scene to die, and this is a good opportunity to breath new life into it. We would love to hear ALL of your thoughts/suggestions about improving The Box.

We need you, all of you, to make this happen.

So what are we fighting for you ask? For what we hold dear. To continue on, to show that we will survive. Saint Simon's Church - this will be a mass as well as a time for people to speak about Sean.

The church is located at the corner of Foothill and Grant in Los Altos

Sean's ashes will be placed at the Gates of Heaven Cemetery immediately following the mass (directions will be passed out at the mass and there will be a funeral procession).

A reception will be held at Serena's immediately following the cemetery service.

The Save Gobo Committee: A message to all

It is with an unbelievable heavy heart that we regretfully inform all of you that Sean passed away this morning (06-13-08). He had his family by his side and was in no pain. It is an understatement to say that Sean will be greatly missed.

At this time no funeral arrangements have been made. Once we have details on a service we will post them here and on the forums. Please do not contact the family at this time as they need time to sort things out.

Sean 'Gobo' Kiely: RIP

I'm very saddened to tell you that our inteprid leader in the SC Goth scene, Sean 'Gobo' Kiely
passed away yesterday after a long and valiant fight against the cancer that took him from us.

Sean defined our scene and led us through some of darkest times and some of our very happiest ones.

Always concerned with the community he put an amazing amount of tithed energy into trying to both grow and
nurture the Santa Cruz and the South Bay Goth scene.

Always intense and funny, he would always take time to listen to you if you had courage to talk to him about
ways that you thought the community could grow.

He was also passionate in fighting for the things he believed in and even during times when people disagreed with his
passionate stance on things, he always commanded a tremendous amount of respect.

His passing leaves such a deep whole that it's hard to fathom what our community will be like without his presence.

Sean 'Gobo' Keily is dancing somewhere, in that sexy military uniform he wore so frequently....................graceful, intelligent,
sensitive and fierce.

We will miss him.

I have a great friend who has never heard of goth, industrial, electro, not even trance. he's big into bluegrass (grateful dead style) and rock, hip hop, general bar music etc..

he has no idea real idea about NIN, KMFDM, although he does know rammstein & ministry :)

So, two questions for you:

1) how would you describe the music?

2) what should i put onto a sampler for him? which artists, songs, whole albums, will get him interested without scaring him away lol?

The original and best-loved line-up of famed post-punk icons Gang of Four reunited in 2005 to great acclaim and success, unfortunately all good things must come to an end. Bassist Dave Allen and drummer Hugo Burnham are moving on, although singer Jon King and guitar-player Andy Gill will continue, focusing on writing and recording new music as Gang of Four. Burnham last performed with the band at All Tomorrow's Parties in the UK in December 2006, while Allen played a few shows alongside a session drummer in 2007, and recently worked on new material with King and Gill.
