"From Funky Fusion to Cutting Edge Cabaret (C)", Yasmine, who has an extensive background in ballet, tap, jazz, & Middle Eastern dance, is the studio owner of Mid-East Dance by Yasmine. Yasmine spent much of 2004 touring with the Bellydance Superstars performing in major cities around the United States as well as Barcelona, Spain and after touring teamed up with Master Tabla Player Issam Houshan in offering Drum & Dance workshops. Yasmine is well recognized for her dynamic and precise movements and her ability to portray the music, which she carefully extends to her students - grooming them for their own spectacular performances. As well as being a sought after instructor due to her personable and fun teaching approach, Yasmine's distinct performance style is often referred to as "Cutting Edge Cabaret."

Featured on the cover of the May/June 2007 issue of Zaghareet, Yasmine also appears in IAMED's Bellydance-O-Rama vol. 3 DVD and appeared as a featured artist for Dr. Samy Farag's 2008 CD Release Gala Show in Texas. Got “Magic” Hips? Rhythmic Hips = “Magic” Hips! (2 hours) SATURDAY (12:15 - 2:15)
Dancers will learn to interpret the sounds of the drums by drilling some of Yasmine’s favorite techniques and movements to Middle Eastern Rhythms to accentuate the “Dums” and “Teks”! Drilling dance movement to these rhythms will help the dancer gain more control and to feel the rhythm. Then we will put these techniques to the test with “The Rhythmic Soul Train” Exercise and “The Battle of Rhythmic Hips!”

Zills & Drills (2 hours) SATURDAY (2:30 - 4:30)
Drills for combining finger cymbal work with dance movement and working with various rhythms. This class also leads into a Full Zill Drill routine that can be used for practice or group performance using the method of set Patterns to accompany music mixed with dance movement combinations!

Funky Fusion Combos to Choreography (4 hours) SUNDAY (10:00 - 2:00)
The combos presented in this class includes some cabaret technique mixed with a spicy blend of tribal style and alternative belly dance fusion topped with Yasmine’s own Funky Flare that can be used for a variety of modern routines! Funky Fusion blends the power and the beauty of tribal and cabaret! This class will include technique & drilling several combinations for the first portion of the class and then applying these combinations to lead into one of Yasmine’s own Funky Fusion routines.

Columbia is proud to be a stop on Tempest's Durga Tour! This workshop will take place in the place of our normal basics class at 711 E. Tempest started her exploration of dance in early 2000 on the East Coast. She quickly found belly dance to be incredibly rewarding not only physically, but spiritually and emotionally, as well as a source of inspiration for her visual art.

Although she enjoys what tradition has to offer, Tempest loves exploring the dance through unusual music and creative costuming, pulling on her visual arts background to "paint a picture" with the dance. By working (playing) outside of the box, Tempest engages the audience through dramatic embodied storytelling , passionate expression, and sensuous, mezmerizing movement. She particularly enjoys performing Raks Gothique, also known as Gothic Belly Dance, and sacred-fusion forms of belly dance.

Strange Presence – 7:30-9:30 PM, $30

It’s all about bleeding your soul out to audience, serving it to them on a platter, and then eating THEM for lunch instead. A truly successful performance does more than show how well you can do the moves—it should really speak to your audience and exude expression. You CAN learn how to have a stronger personality on stage and channel that energy for a more dynamic performance. Discover the key aspects of capturing your audience with your stage presence and develop your own onstage drama! We’ll particularly focus on improvisational technique, character development, and learning to be more “in the moment.” This class is especially for any dancer who is ready to perform or is considering it.

Asharah and Mab, Just Mab workshops in Columbia

April's Alternacirque show will be graced with two of Washington D.C.'s finest alternative performers: Tribal Bellydancer Asharah is returning to the Art Bar stage, and we are absolutely thrilled to have dancer, fire performer and sideshow queen Mab, Just Mab bringing her vaudeville hilarity along for the ride. On Friday, April 24th, both performers will join us at Art Bar for our 9:30 show. 1211 Park St. in downtown Columbia, SC, no cover, the bar is 21+ but we're hopefully performing outside, barring bad weather.

And since they'll be in town anyway, we figured we would pick their professional brains about their craft while they were here. In other words, WORKSHOPS!

Workshops take place on Saturday, April 25th. We're in the process of confirming location, but it's likely to be at the Lexington Old Mill. More information as it comes.

Join Asharah for three hours of intense practice aimed at polishing your bellydance technique and building strength and stamina. She will also share with you a few of her signature robotic movements to add spice to your bellydance movement vocabulary.

This class covers how to build a "bit", and then how to take the bits and build a set and a show! We will also develop a toolbox of elements to get the most out of your audience, heckler handling techniques, and much much more. All performers welcome, not just bellydancers. If you're a sideshow artist, fire eater, hula hooper, host, emcee, poet, magician or improv comedian, come along and improve your presentation.

Onca and August had so much fun playing at Art Bar with Alternacirque last July, they are coming back and (I've been told) bringing more musicians. Founded in 2007, the Society fuses diverse elements such belly dance, cabaret performance, Romany music, foppish occultism, unapologetically pretentious Belle Epoque café living, goodwill, bad behavior, misappropriated pop songs, and the horribly misguided notion that one can try and squeeze an entire Balkan brass band into one accordion. And if all of my previous experience with the Mezmer Society holds, they will play and create mayhem all night long. Crazy kids.

Raquy and the Cavemen in Columbia THURSDAY

We landed something really, really amazing last minute. Raquy and the Cavemen are a new school middle eastern percussion and music group out of Brooklyn, New York. Raquy was supposed to be in Asheville this Thursday, but the stars aligned for us and we got them instead. WOOT! If you've not seen Raquy Danziger and her crew, they're highly skilled, high energy and highly entertaining, one of the best live acts I have ever seen. Intrigued? So! Delirium Tribal has the honor of opening the show and performing with Raquy and the Cavemen Thursday, Nov. 20th at 701 Whaley St, Columbia, SC 29201. We'll start at 8 PM and the door charge is $10.

For those of you that haven't heard, 701 Whaley St. is across from the Gramby and Olympia mills, and is an old brick building that used to be the community store. It's been reconfigured into huge, currently empty storefronts, a gallery, a contemporary arts center and live work spaces for artists in residence. If you take the Huger exit on I-126, follow it across Blossom and across the railroad tracks, it will curve around to the left in front of the mills and become Whaley St. It will be immediately on your left on the corner of Olympia Ave.

ABOUT LISA ZAHIYA
Lisa Zahiya began the study of bellydance in 2000, and immediately fell in love with the dance, it's history, and the large and diverse bellydance community. Before beginning her study of bellydance, Lisa studied ballet, jazz and hip hop dance. She was a member of the University of Maryland dance team.
Lisa began her career in the Baltimore/DC metropolitan area, where she had the privilege to study with Autumn Ward, Laurel Victoria Gray and Artemis Mourat.
She moved to Baltimore and studied intensively with 2nd generation bellydancer, Piper Reid Hunt. Lisa was a member of the Daughters of Rhea performance troupe and is certified LEVEL II dancer in the Piper Method of American Belly Dance.
In the end of 2005 she moved to Asheville, NC. She joined Baraka Mundi, one of the south east's premier tribal bellydance troupes, in March of 2006.
Lisa also teaches and performs hip hop dance. She is known for her fusion of hip hop and bellydance.
In 2008, Lisa travelled to Long Beach, CA where she won the title of Tribal Fusion Bellydancer of the Universe. She also recently completed a week long professional and teacher training program with Aziza of Montreal.
Lisa now teaches and performs as a soloist. Lisa is an in demand workshop instructor and is grateful to be able to travel and teach bellydance.
Lisa lives in downtown Asheville, NC where she teaches bellydance and hip hop dance.

ABOUT SAMITE'
SamiTe' is a world-renowned bellydancer and teacher.
Blending traditional and modern forms, SamiTe' has brought her versatile style to audiences across the globe. In 2008, she won second place in the Bellydancer of the Universe Competition in Long Beach, Calif., as well as winning the Miss Congeniality Competition there.
She currently is the artistic director of Elysium bellydance ensemble in Asheville, N.C.
As an instructor, SamiTe' has traveled throughout the U.S. teaching the art of bellydance, and currently teaches both beginning and intermediate classes.

Natalie and Ashley workshops in Columbia, August 2nd

We are happy to announce that we will be teaching a workshop day in the Columbia area on Saturday, August 2nd. We'll be at our old faithful location, the Center for Dance Education in the basement of the Old Mill, 711 E. Main St., Lexington, SC.

We'd like to continue our tradition of skipping the choreographies and going straight for hardcore technique and tools for you to use in your own fashion.

12 PM to 2 PM: Per popular request, Natalie will be teaching layering technique. We'll talk about the popular shimmy layers of course, but there's a whole host of other stuff we can layer in both the fast and slow vocabularies.

2:30 PM to 4:30 PM: Ashley is our go-to girl for smooth and gooey tribal fusion combos. She'll be giving advice on how to construct tribal "sentences," long streams of standard moves, cut, spliced and smooshed together that are perfect for solo work.

Workshops are $30 each (we understand the economy is crashing around our ears, so we're trying to keep it reasonable). “Classical Egyptian Technique and Combinations” - Take your dancing to the next level with challenging hip technique that will enhance your performance. Focusing on personal style and music interpretation, each dancer will bring out their “dance personality” and put it to use in each dance combination. Special attention to body language and facial expression will take place in this unique class, with exercises to help dancers unleash new ways of interpreting the music.

"Reaching New Heights” - Bozenka will give each student specialized attention on transitions, execution of movement, aesthetics, and musicality (what Bozenka likes to refer to as (T.E.A.M.). To take your dancing to a higher level, awareness of all these elements is essential. Let Bozenka guide you through exercises (dance combinations) that will help you project better posture, strengthen your articulation of movements and put a spark into every performance. This challenging class will also incorporate improvisation to unleash self-expression and will focus on musicality.

Sunday:

“Latin/Arabic Fusion Combinations By Bozenka” - Learn how to put your Salsa, Cha-Cha and more into your belly dancing. This moderately paced class will teach you simple and flavorful combinations to incorporate a Latin dance flare into your own dance routine.

“Facial Expressions and Body Language” - This is one of Bozenka’s most popular workshops among dancers who are at an advanced level but is encouraged for dancers of all levels. This workshop focuses on the interpretation between Dancer and Music as well as the communication between Dancer and Audience. Bozenka uses creative methods to encourage dancers to interpret the feelings caused by the music and to learn to convey those feelings to the audience. Dancers learn how appropriate body language and using facial expressions take their performance to a higher level. This workshop is recommended for groups of less than 50 participants.

Tribal classes are coming to Greenville!

Over the past two and a half years I've been in South Carolina, I've received countless emails from all over the state asking about Tribal classes. Though interest in Tribal is growing rapidly, there are only three instructors in the state, and Ashley and I are two of them.

Therefore, I am pleased to announce that I will be teaching monthly tribal classes in Greenville, SC. The first one will be Tuesday, March 11th, after which time we'll be holding them on the first Tuesday of every month. I'll be teaching tribal and tribal fusion technique - literally a month's worth over a two hour period. This class is $35 in advance and $40 at the door.

Classes will be held at the Carolina Ballet Theatre on Woodruff Road from 7 to 9 PM. Please contact Brandy at bmlw@whiteclassics.com for more information on venue and purchasing classes.

Attendee feedback, and made several changes and upgrades accordingly. Please

Some highlights include: We have added a Specialty Class room to focus on our
regions specifics dancers needs - including classes specifically geared toward
advanced and professional dancers, prop classes and specialty topics. These
classes are limited to only 15 participants, space is limited, so register early to
reserve your spot.

We have also changed our location to Athens, GA to ease our attendees' experience.
The new location is at the Athens Classic Center, with easy access to parking, food,
hotels and all SFF 2008 events.

This year we have increased our instructors with many options gear specifically to
tribal and cabaret attendees. Expect a weekend packed with classes, shopping, great
shows and a ton of fun!

In this class you will learn the basics of shimmying from the muscles used for different shimmy styles to the timing and variations of basic shimmies. Hello Ladies of Southern Djinn!

I have just signed up to participate in Shimmy-a-ton 2006 event in the Atlanta area that was designed to raise money for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Last year Shimmy-a-thon raised over $16,000.00 and this year we have set our goal at $30,000 to help families living with and fighting Cystic Fibrosis. The event is set up so that the dancers raise money by shimmying. We will all get together on September 23, 2006 and shimmy until we can not shake it anymore. Our friends, family and coworkers have an opportunity to sponsor us in this event by making a flat donation. To help them exceed their goal, I have set a personal donation goal of $100. Hopefully, together we can help the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation defeat this terrible disease.

Cystic fibrosis is a genetic disease affecting approximately 30,000 children and adults in the United States. A defective gene causes the body to produce an abnormally thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs and leads to life-threatening lung infections. According to the CF Foundation's National Patient Registry, the median age of survival for a person with CF is 36 years.

Spring Water Festival

Southern Djinn took the stage Saturday with the help of Marcus and managed to "steal the show"! We learned a valuable lesson.... how to survive when your cd won't play and you have no music of your own... the "music people" were very helpful asking if we could dance to other music. "Sure...what have you got??" We settled on a hip hop cd. "What songs ae you going to play?" " We don't know..it is a mix...." so we climbed back on stage hoping for something we could dance to... and we got it!!
When "My milkshake" started up we started shimmying along...The crowd started dancing too .. we had ton's of people hop on stage wih us..several " break dancers", teenagers, belly dance enthusiasts male and female...it was a fun way to spend the day!
They envited us back to perform for the Christmas event and maybe even have a float in the parade...
I am happy to feel so welcome in a small Southern town . It is a belly dance break through!!

hi all,,,,, i have a couple of questions .
My new troupe is doing a festival in Spartangurg
called the International Festival in Oct 6th.
well, the coordinator contacted me today with the paper work to fill out and i read through it
and they want us to do a 45 min set non stop, and a 30 min set nonstop....
is this the norm for performance slots?
i ahve never danced anything for 45 min and am fraid of falling down dead of exaustion
or my troupe members having heart attacs!!!!!!!!
Is anyone else doing the International Festival this year
is Spartangurg South Carolina, that can give some advice
on how to handle long sets?

Southern Fusion Fest

We had an awesome time....The Gypsy Caravan workshop was great. Those ladies know there stuff! We are not tribal dancers but it did not matter...the instruction was great and applied to us as well!
Time management in Atlanta is a thing unto itself...we managed to dash about and be on time despite several wrong turns...
Ponce on Paris is so interesting...the decor is fascinating. You could stay for days and still miss things (like the lady on the striped elephant in the corner)..
Last but not least, the ladies who put this together did an amazing job. Thanks Liora, Fatina, Sukari and everyone else....it was fun!

July 7th, 2007 is supposedly a lucky day. The amount of weddings taking place has tripled according to some statistics. Las Vegas is going nuts with wedding chappels being booked from 5 am to 11:59PM let alone their casinos according to an article in Time magazine. So my question for this group is: what are y'all doing for 777?

I will be dancing my butt off at Awalim's Tribal Carnivale event at Red Light Cafe...hopefully we'll have a palm reader and fortune tellers to tell us how lucky we'll be on the luckiest day of the century!

totally cross-posted, but what do you think about

doing the "out of the box" workshop on Saturday, July 14th??? If there are too many people who can't make it, maybe we can fanangle something else.

Also... Most of us know that this particular workshop is to help with soloing....I've been thinking more about subject matter covered. I'm afraid it'll turn into more of a seminar. In a two hour workshop, I'm going to try to squish in:

*yoga (duh - I like da yoga)
*delicious drills (yum)
*stage presence (which is what Delirium will be covering in their advanced workshops this month - thank you, Natty)
*traveling (I'm a closet-cabaret-choo-choo-shimmy fan.... also really into gawazee - did I spel that right?)
*gettin' into it (I'll try to work this into a practice without embarassing myself!)
*combos (there are a few that I've strung together for various performances - combos are always nice)

*also... if anyone is really interested in learning how to construct and really fitful (couldn't think of a better word) drum solo, I think I got some good stuff for ya..

uh. Now that I'm looking at everything, this will probably either have to be cut down or stretched into a three-hour shindig.

That's all I've got so far. If anyone else can think of stuff they think I can help them with, let me know. If I don't know, I'll ask Natty and will hopefully have it figured out by then. Hahaha!!

I don't know how much Delirium-hosted-two-hour-workshops cost.... Natalie can get with us about that, and also confirm the date.

Again, I ask if anyone really wants to make the workshop, but the 14th is no good, let us know and I'll see what I can do.

I'm really sorry to rattle on like this, but Natalie and I have really gotten into the whole after-event-house-party-throwdown thing, If you're interested in performing at a mini-hafla, our "Duplex of Doom" is well-equipped. And if anyone needs to camp for the night, we've probably got room for you, too.

This'll be FUN!

Venue Change for Blue Moon Hafla April 28th!

Due to unforseen "electrical problems" at Theatre Nervosa, the hafla will now be held at the Kimah Healing Arts Center in Greenville--the same site as the fan workshop that afternoon. Spread the word!

Announcing the opening of Ma'at International Dance Arts, Greenville, SC's first dance studio dedicated to the art of Middle Eastern "Belly" Dance! If you don't have some already, you'll need 2 fans for the first ever "ATS" Fan Workshop on April 7th in Columbia, SC and for the Fan Basics Workshop in Greenville, SC on April 26th.
Here are your ordering options:
Tai Chi Fans: Red w/ red translucent slats (made for right and left hand!): $15/pair
Black Dragon Fans: $10/pair
Black ribbed fans in Red, Yellow, Hot pink, Fushia, Black, Royal Blue: $20/pair

I will post pictures of each style of fan (and hopefully all the color options, too) into the photos section of this on Bastets Fusion Fan tribe .

To order: 1) Go to www.paypal.com, send money to eve6570@hotmail.com, indicate your name, e-mail address, phone #, which workshop you are attending (the date), and fan style/color in the notes section. I will send you a confirmation e-mail once received.
