My name is Dominic, I go by Decaf, I contact juggle with Tucson SpherePlay, a juggling and fire arts group in Tucson and I have been contact juggling for nine months. This video is to show tricks that I can do, kind of like a basic overview of what I've become in nine months time.

Please watch, comment, give me some advice. I know where my main flaws are, like speed and dropping -grins-, but artistic advice is cool to. Or just give me a congratulations if you think they are in order. I'm pretty pleased with it, considering it is the first video I have edited. Thank you.

Re: My nine month contact juggling anniversary video
Mon, December 8, 2008 - 12:14 PMYeah, the speed (particularly of your isolations) could be moderated, but really as far as the hand-flips etc. . .I recommend incorporating more movement to the "tweens" (the pauses in between the moving segments of a butterfly/handflip etc).
When people first learn, there's a tendency to keep all the motion restricted to the actual flip, then it stops when it gets to back of hand or palm of hand. The only difference between the "windshield wiper" and the "butterfly" (to use the oldschool CJ terms) is adding a rest phase once the sphere reaches a control point, the hand moves and continues the motion and adds fluidity, instead of it being all segmented into move-stop-move-stop-move-stop.
Looking really great for 9 months though, keep playing!
PS. I like your music selection. I used some of the same music when first did my contactjuggling/sphereplay vids -

Re: My nine month contact juggling anniversary video
Mon, December 8, 2008 - 4:22 PMThank you very much. I know what you mean. On the raw footage, you can hear my friend Emilie tell me if I want to perform that I should dance more. My reply was, I'm not doing this to show off or be a performance. I'm doing this video as an update of the tricks I've learned to do and how well I do them. I can't wait to get a video from one of my actual performance peices, where there is movement and dancing. Now that I know the quality of Pedro's camera, I think I'll make him back up and actually do a routine. I think it is partially why most contact juggling videos you see, the person doesn't move, is because you kind of can't see what is going on unless the person is still and head on.
Thank you so much though. I agree wholeheartedly. I need to not get nervous before a camera. -smiles- You know how that is, reight? -

Re: My nine month contact juggling anniversary video
Wed, December 17, 2008 - 5:24 PMIn my humble opinion, what you are doing at nine month is definitely huge. we like! high five! as far as "how" you are doing "what" you are doing, I would advise an emphases on fun! I know you were making the vid... whatever! if you aren't having fun, what's the point! and if you are having fun...then why can't I see that you are having fun...hmmm?
but, still awesome!
as for the standing still thing (and this is where I tend to piss folks off) I find (personally) that the distinction between Contact juggling and Sphereplay is the movement. when you see a CJ performance it tends to look static and generally like the "artist" has spent lots of time "practicing". whereas, when you see a Sphereplay show, what you tend to see is a person "engaged with an object" and, like all good engagements should, eventually, this leads to a marriage. A point at which the two merge and there is just one. The movement. The dance.
also, the "they can't see the sphere" issue is easily solved with bigger spheres!
So no offense meant to anyone! But think less and play more. As Yoda says "do, or do not, there is no try" -

Re: My nine month contact juggling anniversary video
Wed, December 17, 2008 - 7:47 PM-chuckles- Why thank you so much. Part of the reason it looks like I'm not having fun, sad to say, is cause I got nervous from the filming, and also I had a friend telling me I need to dance more. It was annoying considering she didn't get the point of me filming, and it was annoying, cause then I had to cut the sound out of it. But thank you. I'll try to look like I enjoy it more. I get a serious face when I concentrate, and some of those tricks I seriously have to concentrate on.

Re: My nine month contact juggling anniversary video
Mon, December 8, 2008 - 5:18 PMThat's ok. Thank you. I'm working on my palm spins. Part of my problem was the camera right in front of me. I kind of freaked out and speed up a bit. And you're right...I never even noticed I was holding the non-active ball in that way. I'll pay more attention to that. Thank you.
