Hi there! So I know Michael and I don't get on here very often, but life is so full of family, play, work and everything else we do that I find it hard to keep up on the online stuff. That said...here are ALL the SphereCamp Texas details.
Thanks and we are really excited to see so many old friends and make a bunch of new ones : )

SphereCamp Texas is a three day camping festival for playful people. It features over 20 playshops on over 12 different toys and skills lead by inspired and talented teachers. It's also got sphere games, fire play, the raffle, special guests, a talent showcase, fire circles, drumming, live music, a dj and countless other ways to encourage your inner superhero.

Connecting and playing, learning, sharing, teaching, performing and silliness too...Welcome to SphereCamp!

SphereCamp TX officially starts on Friday, December 4, 2009, but...
on Thursday, December 3, we will have intensive learning sessions with Alien, Burning Dan, Greg, Margaret, Noel, and Michael.
Our intention with this is to really delve deep into the arts with extended sessions for people who want to level up on sphereplay, poi, contact staff and maybe hoop. There are limited spots available for this, so first come first serve, because we want to keep each playshop small enough for every one to get individual attention as needed. Gates open at noon.

Camping
This is a camping, rain or shine event. Please come prepared for all types of weather, it can get chilly at night so make sure to have a good sleeping bag or enough cozy blankets.

There are a few camp & RV sites with water & electric that are an additional fee, just contact us about this and we'll fill you in. There are also several hotel options within a 35-45 minute drive.

Garbage & Recycling
It's pretty simple. Make as little waste as possible and recycle as much as possible. We’ll be packing out the garbage for the whole event ourselves because it maks it less expensive for everyone. Please keep this in mind and try to take as much of your own garbage and recycling out with you as you can. We’ll provide trash bags, just ask!

A word about food...
Here's the meal deal: it's six meals. It averages out to $8.333333 a meal. Both Vegetarian and Carnivore will be fed simple, yummy and nutritious meals by the Lovely Lunch Lady Crew.

Friday - Dinner, Late Night Soup
Saturday - Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, Late Night Soup
Sunday - Brunch

We'll also have Coffee, Tea, Fruit and light snacks throughout the weekend.

We suggest that you bring your own water and anything else that you like to have. Or bring your own food. Or buy one or two meals. Whatever...

This kitchen is set up by us, so any help with a stove or any other kitchen appliance you think might be useful, would be appreciated.

Other important stuff to know
This is a bring your own stuff kind of event. We really discourage plastic forks and spoons because they create so much waste, so please bring your own plate, bowl, mug and utensils. And if you want your dishes cleaner than your tongue can get them, there is a dish washing station.

There is also a body washing station. Also known as the showers. Please conserve the hot water so everyone can benefit.

Well-behaved dogs are welcomed, there is a $10.00 entry fee to pay at the gate.

Well-behaved children are also welcomed. (just kidding...but, really children are welcomed)!

Arriving: Gate opens Friday, December 4, at NOON.
Departing: The gate remains open 24 hours until Sunday, December 6 at 6:00 pm.
If you are attending Thursday's Intensive Learning Sessions the gate will open at Noon and Close at Midnight.

Good things to have: tent, cozy blankets, towel, garbage bags, drums, fire toys, fuel, smiles and toys.
Bad things to have: judgmental attitudes, ego-driven behavior

Our domain name got bought out by a company in Russia! It's pretty lame and we're trying to buy it back, but it is taking a really long time. hello all!

i have been CJ'ing for a couple months and have learned some basics...i would really like to get together with some other "ballers" and expand my horizons! i'm wondering if there are any meet-ups in for CJ in Tucson or Phoenix...if not-lets make one!

i live about 2 hours from Tucson and 3 hours from PHX so i'd be limited to a bi weekly or monthly meetup. i offer good company and positive vibes to any fellow CJer who would be interested in supporting this micro-community. if your an absolute novice i have a couple dvd's that i'd be willing to share...then we can create our own AZ CJ group from the ground up! :) Thanks in advance for your time!

TX SphereCamp08 a great sucess!

Hey everybody,

Spherecamp was an amazing success this year, we had almost 100 people who came out and played! The new venue (Recreation Plantation) is fabulous and we have reserved the space for 1st weekend of December 09! Yippee we found our home.

Some of the highlights this year included: over 30 different Playshops with over 12 different skill sets, performances by Sensei Strange,Caught Listening & The Extraterrestrial Circus Experiment & Brothers of the Flame. The fire play was great, the people were amazing and the whole tone of the weekend was FUN(with a capital F).

Thank you all who came out and played with us, for those of you who missed it, well there is always next year!

We will be working on the 08 video after the Holidays, if you have footage that you would like in it, please send it along.

Also, if you have pictures from the weekend please e-mail them to us, we are working on some photo albums for our site.

Thanks again for a rockin' Spherecamp!

I just spoke with Michael Glenn and it is official. Spherecamp is going to be held December 5-7 at Recreation Plantation in Dripping Springs. Alien Workshops at Spherecamp Austin 2008

Hey y'all!
It turns out that I will be coming to Spherecamp after all!... and I'm bringing Zan Moore!! While we are there, we will be shooting footage of Sage and Arashi (if we can find him) for our upcoming poi instructional and motivational DVD!

So naturally, for my workshops at Spherecamp this year, I'd like to turn you guys on to some of the stuff that will be on our DVD.

My 1st work shop will be rather interesting. Here is a description:

Spin-fu: spinning without the props.
We'll start out with some warm-ups that will get your shoulders, spine, and lower back ready to spin... and conveniently teach the 4 basic spinning modes. We will then explore turning and pirouettes. From there, the sky is the limit! We will play with turning and dancing around, while waving the arms about in the 4 basic modes!

This is a great way to learn the foundation body mechanics that will give you more freedom of movement wile spinning poi or staff. Of course it also applies to other object manipulation arts... and pretending you are a kung fu masta is fun!

Let's use this thread to coordinate travelers leaving after Spherecamp Austin 2008 or staying in the Austin area.

Rides to the Airport, places to stay if your flight is a day or two later, etc.

Zan and I fly out of AUS on the 11th at 6:50am (arg). >_<
We will be shooting DVD footage during and after Spherecamp, so that is why we are staying a few extra days. We may need to work out a place to crash for those extra days, and a ride to AUS!

So we always do our best to make SphereCamp affordable because the more the merrier, right? Here's what we came up with this year.
Sphereplay.com will have pre-reg in the next day or two.

The Date:
December 5 - 7, 2008
The Recreation Plantation charges $20.00 per person at the gate. These prices include that fee. If you get your tickets online or by phone, your name will be on a list at the gate. If you wait until you get there to get your ticket just be ready to pay $20.00 at the gate and the rest when you get in. Here's an example: Show up at Camp, pay $20 at the gate and $80 at registration. Get it?

Weekend Ticket: $100.00
Get ticket by November 30: $90.00

Weekend Kids Ticket: $50.00
(same price if you pre-reg or day of show)

Day Ticket: $40.00
Get ticket by November 30: $35.00

Day Kids Ticket: $30.00

Weekend Meal Plan: $35.00

Individual Meals: $7.00

There are a limited number of RV spots with hook-ups for an additional charge at the gate.
Electricity & water - $20.00 per 3-day weekend
Electricity, water & sewer - $30.00 per 3-day weekend

What is the Meal Plan?
It's Friday Dinner, 3 squares on Saturday, Breakfast and Lunch on Sunday. Plus late nite snacks, smores and more. It''l be yummy food with veggie options. We'll post the menu as soon as it is ready.

This is a camping event, so bring your tent and everything you need to be comfortable. More on this later...

Interesting Video

I don't know if anyone else has seen this video. I like to research things when I get bored and I stumbled upon this video of Michael Moschen from 2002. It's almost 40 minutes long. I watched the whole thing through once and then the section labeled 'shape' again because I thought it was pretty interesting.

Last month I was down in Plumtree hanging with Will and took some footage of the Toe River Lodge and Campground. The Sphere Itself:

The sphere has been one of my great teachers and friends. If one seeks a more vivacious existence, observe the sphere alone and you may learn much.

It will stand serene and shining... waiting patiently for the next beautiful adventure. It is a beacon of kinetic energy. A content mirror for the outside world.

If some force of the universe gives some modicum of it's energy to the sphere, off it goes... It rolls, as it rolls it effortlessly forsees the flow of destiny and in harmonized motion it follow the chaotic contours of whatever surface it encounters.

It adapts to the good and the bad equally. A witness to them being instruments in the same orchestra. It tastes the flavor of each. If it plummets from a foreboding height, it bounces! Though it may be scratched, it emerges from injury moving at a more energized pace. It does not linger in the cauldron of pain and destruction. It appreciates destruction as the fiendishly painted mother of a creative new reality. It rushes eagerly into an infant sea born of the galaxys ever-morphing imagination.

The Sphere and a Human:

In order to sphere dance a wonderpiece of movement you must treat the sphere with focused reverance. You must fail to take for granted even one cell of your body's contact. Cradle it in your transforming embrace like a lover. Once nestled in love the sphere stays relatively constant in it's physical nature. Through this consistency it teaches us to love and embrace change. Life and change share a symbiotic bond. Without change it would be improbable to notice that you are alive. Without life there would fail to be spunky philosophical beings such as myself to be conscious of change and thus think it into existence. Those who fear and fight change are the handmaidens of death and as death is merely a form of change, they are only fighting with themselves. If one immerses themselves in the waterfall of change, their soul will vibrate in harmony with the universal note and being becomes an unplanned wonder drizzled story..

When your whole body works as one with the sphere, ..Sometimes you will manipulate it's flow and sometimes it will manipulate yours. Quickly it will show you which parts of your physical body you are well aquainted with and which ones you have taken for granted. Let go of yourself, clear your mind of prejudice-tainted wordly thoughts, and surrender yourself as a grateful instrument of destruction-laced creation and you will unconsciously rip blinding art from the very fabric of the void... Sometimes the art will stay with you, begging in it's beautiful vanity to be painted within the universal canvas over and over. Yet, if it seems to have sunk resolutely back into the dark waters of nothingness, refrain from fretting. Like a flower that blooms alone in the vast abyss of space.. Although never a being may ever see or affirm it's beauty, There is no shadow cast on it's life.

Final Thought:

True, infatuated love for an object, creature, or manifestation tattoos your soul on the eternally gasping breast of pure beauty.

Austin, TX - Meetup

The last weekend of June(28-29) I am trying to organize a sphereplay meetup in austin. If anyone is interested please post. We are still determining what park/camp to have it at, so if you have an opinion on that post that as well. Not sure how many out-of-towners will be driving in, but the more that want to come the more likely we will be searchin for campgrounds(mckinney, perdenales) or needin some hosts. FIrst Burn

Spherecamp West 2008, was inspirational to me. I have been greatly energized, in ways I did not expect.
I greatly enjoyed all of the playshops I participated in, but one of them challenged me in ways which surprised me.
Gregs basic poi playshop surprised me in that I found it impossible to turn both ways without interrupting the spin.
After Spherecamp, I returned home, and soon made myself a set of practice poi. I am certain that on MOTS place, he
refers to the "Nutcracker phase," in learning poi. Been there done that. :) After a few days, the turns just started working,
and I found myself obsessed.

So, this video shows the progress I have made, from a total newb unable to turn, to a first burn without setting myself or anything else
on fire. Thanks Mike, and Jen, and Greg, and all the rest, for providing an inspirational weekend.

this is soooo much fun

I must say, after five wonderful years of play with Michael and Jennifeairie and the rest of the try out toys family, I am awestruck and amazed. there are soooooo many of us now! it is always great to see people year after year, growing, playing, sharing and loving life. I have just left AZ, and wow! those kids in the hot sun are really holding it down. mad love desert people, I'll be back next year.

Right now Micheal Thom Lora and I are up here in Oklahoma at the midevil fair in Normond. I am totaly floored by the sheer number of shereplayers in this town. I mean it, this place is cralling with ballers! Thank you all for coming out to the fair and sharing your wonderful play energy and inspiration. It really means a lot to this monkey. and to all of you who we see all over the place, there are days went the lowest common denominater really make you wonder why we do this. You are why we do this. New play tribe for central TX.

My name is Dan. I have created a new tribe called Aggieland Skill Toy Club to help get people together in my surrounding area. I am currently hoping to have get togethers 2+ times a month at a local park. The purpose of this is to help each other develop and hone our abilities with skill toys; such as Diabolo, Poi, Spheres, Staff, etc.. I am also hoping that by having a larger group of people participating more attention will gravitate torwards it and there by create a larger community of players. So, If you have any interest in joining the tribe please do. Anyone can join the tribe even if you wont be able to attend our gatherings, just keep it a place of possitivity.

This was my first year at Spherecamp, and it was *amazing*. We all made so many great connections through this, and had great new experiences.. Fun Story

I'm a member of my town's Human Relations Commission and we had our holiday party this evening. I'd gotten bored after about the first 15 minutes, so I took out a sphere and was just playing around. I was in the middle of working out how to sphereplay the electric slide (I will get it and it will be thoroughly amusing) when, as usual, I felt everyone's eyes one me. "What's Laura doing with that ball"! That turned into a bit of an 'intro to sphereplay' in front of the whole group. I also had a stage ball with me, so I passed that around and whoever wanted to got a chance to play a little bit. It was amazing! That then became a bit of a talent show. Someone sang a song, we had a group cha-cha lesson, a kid showed off his breakdancing skills. So my messing around with my sphere wound up bringing some life to the party!

My roommate and I were at Ren. Fest the weekend before thanksgiving. It was here that she was given a card inviting us to play (with no experience needed) at SphereCamp 2007. We are both very excited to play, but are not sure exactly where to meet everyone, or what we should bring. Coordinate camping and save $$ at Spherecamp texas

For those of you into communal camping: Each $12-per-night Tent site at McKinney Falls State Park allows 1 tent. Each tent can have no more than 4 people.
Each $16-per-night camp site w/ electric hookups and water allows 2 tents instead of 1.

I'll have to check on the square footage of the electric sites, but as long as they comfortable fit 2 good sized tents. Up to 8 people could be splitting the $16-per-night cost. So, lets coordinate tentmates and save $$!

coordinating arrivals and departures

A couple of things on arriving at McKinney Falls State Park:

There is a gate. It is locked between 10pm and 8am, but they give you the combo so you can leave. Anyone planning on a late-nite arrival should call us, so we can get you in!

Also, please just let us know if you need to be transported to and fro the airport and we'll make arrangements. Maybe we could coordinate flight times here too.

Making his second appearance at TX Spherecamp is Sensi Strange, if you aren't familiar with him, he does an amazing job combinding spheres with illusion. It is spectacular to watch, I'm blown away every time I see him.

Another confirmed special guest is Elijah Whippo from Clan Tynker. He is an amazing juggler, performer and sphereplayer based in Sante Fe, NM.
