another Spinagogue update

hey Spinagoguers,
we have made a few changes based on which classes got the most signups.

1) We are canceling the 1:30 class on saturday (Double Staff II with
Noel) and replacing it with another section of Poi II which was
scheduled for the same time so there is still room for more signups.
2) We are also changing the 4:30 class on Sunday (Partner Poi II) to
another Partner Poi I with Greg and Margaret.
3) The Poi Dance class with Ian on Sunday at 2:30 is FULL as is the
Partner Poi I with Noel and Jordan at noon on Sunday.
4) There are still spots in all of the other workshops so you can
still sign up for more!

ALSO:
On Saturday night there will be a night of performance, music, and
spinning at the Prop Box Studio.

Performances come from groups and individuals that use the Prop Box to
refine their art:
Vulcan Crew(http://vulcancrew.com) performing their latest creation.
Laura Stokes of ricochet circus on aerials(http://www.ricochet.name/).
Bliss Butterfly(http://blissbutterfly.com)
Performances by Prop Box residents Ian
Smith(http://ianmichaelsmith.com), Brian
Thompson(http://www.circusconspiracy.com/), and Bri Crabtree.

This is the Saturday night of Spinagogue, a weekend spinning intensive
held at the Vulcan, so there will be a ton of people people here
already, if you aren't attending the Spinagogue be sure to come to
this event to join the fun.

This is a free event and a fundraiser, donations accepted at the door
and a raffle will be held.

i've been spinning for about a year and a half now....but i've been meditating off and on for years. it only recently occurred to me to deliberately to take the trance state i find in spinning and push into active meditation. it blew me away...the most intense and peaceful sensation i've ever experienced.

i'm going to keep posting the results of this journey in spinning to my youtube....feedback/critique/hugs are always welcome, in no particular order ;-)

Surprize! July Spinagogue Weekend!

July 11-13th Spinagogue Weekend!

In celebration of the 1 year anniversary of Spinagogue we will be hosting another weekend poi intensive. If you liked poi back then, you probably like poi even more now! Just like the first Spinagogue this one will be totally dedicated to poi.

What is Spinagogue? Check out our past events:
The first Poi Spinagogue: http://youtube.com/watch?v=fYZP_K575rI
The Spinagogue staff weekend: http://youtube.com/watch?v=7s32VKyXfXo

Spinagogue is a weekend intensive designed to radically improve your skills while immersing you in the Bay Area fire scene: 21 workshops, three days of food, and it’s all happening during the Crucible Fire Arts Festival (featuring the Vulcan Crew).

This time around we are trying something new. We have designed the schedule to fit the needs of spinners at all levels. There are 3 tracks you can sign up for: Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced, each designed to improve many aspects of your spinning including dance and movement, tricks and techniques appropriate to that level, and even working on choreography with groups and partner moves.

The Vulcan is a hotbed of fire arts located in the hear of “lovely” industrial East Oakland. In addition to hosting the east bay’s beast and brightest spin jam, the Vulcan is home to over 100 local performers and artisans of all types. Three workshop spaces and living are inside the Vulcan will host our festivities. Free lodging (sorry, couches only) will be available Friday though Sunday for participants from outside the Bay Area. Additionally, hotels are available locally starting at about $50 a night.

A typical day at the Vulcan:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=HpjnvqKeoHs

Schedule of Events

Friday, July 11: Meet, greet, and eat

We begin the weekend with a welcome dinner at the Vulcan. Dinner will begin promptly at 7. Feel free to stay after and spin with us. The Spinagogue instructors will be on hand to asses your spinning progress and help you set goals for the weekend.

Saturday, July 12: Workshop, workshop, workshop, Fire Arts Festival!!

3 workshops, an hour and a half long, begin at 10AM and run until 4:30PM. Breakfast and stretching start at 9AM. Lunch is at 11:30 and dinner at 5. After dinner, many Spinagogue instructors are performing in the Crucible Fire Arts Festival (www.thecrucible.org/fireartsfestival). You are all encouraged to come and enjoy the festivities.

Sunday, July 12: Workshops, dinner, collapse!

4 workshops begin at 11AM and run until 8PM including a viewing of some of the best object manipulation videos the internet has to offer. Breakfast and stretching start at 10. Lunch is at 12:30. Stay for dinner at 7 and relax. You’ve had a long, hard weekend.

Class Descriptions

Poi Dance Technique and Improvisation w/ Ian
This class will explore how the body and poi can interact and learn some drills to help improvisation skills.

Strange Planes (beg/int) w/ Ian
This class will present some basic plane bends along with an introduction to atomics and the answer the question, why does a butterfly work?

Strange Planes (adv) w/ Ian
This workshop will be an examination of the limitations 2-D thinking and then a more advanced introduction of 3-D/atomic/plane bending theory.

Dance Dance information (beg) w/ KT
KT will take you through a series of exercises exploring different elements of dance and choreographic tools to help close the gap between movement and spinning. This class is mostly guided improvisation with some dance/spin tricks to learn.

Dance Dance Information (int) w/ KT
Using choreographic dance tools like space, speed, quality, and time explore and expand your artistic process. Through guided problem solving assignments you will develop your own movement phrases and get to discuss and readdress your solutions.

Poi fundamentals w/ Krissy
In this beginning class we will learn all the basic fundamental poi tricks including 3beat weave, butterfly, and chase the sun. We will cover moves in all 4 timings and directions.

Intermediate tricks and transitions w/ Krissy
In this class we will learn flowers, anti-spin flowers, stalls, and many more exciting moves. We will also learn how tricks are connected and how to create flow and connection in your spinning.

Poi Basics w/ Noel
Get down with the basic moves in all timings and directions. This poi class will cover the fundamentals of weaves, extensions, turning, buzzsaws, butterflies, lock-outs and separations.

Beg Antispin and Isolation w/ Noel
This class will cover the fundamentals of isolation and antispin. By using the horizontal plane as a starting point for drills, we will uncover how to integrate antispin and isolation into all of your preexisting and future technique.

Int Antispin and Isolation w/ Noel
Take your understanding of isolation and antispin to the next level. Learn the basics and beyond of antispin flowers, isolated buzzsaws, antispin/isolated weaves and more!

Adv Antispin and Isolation w/ Noel
In this class you will learn basic unit circle theory and its relation to antispin and isolation. All the while learning impressive tricks such as linear isolations, extensions and cateyes.

Beginning T&D: The Essentials /w Greg
Timing and Direction are the two most important elements in the modern system of poi instruction. Learn the two basic timings and combine them with the two directions to create the four combinations of timing and direction that are used to understand almost all contemporary spinning technique. Then get started on transitioning fluidly from one to the next.

Intermediate T&D: Stalls and Transitions /w Greg
Strengthening your fundamentals is the easiest way to improve your spinning. This class is designed to find the "holes" in your technique by comprehensively reviewing the essentials of timing and direction, then exploring the nearly infinite number of connections between them. Learn a variety of stalls

Advanced T&D: Atomics, Insides and Super Stalling /w Greg
Take your understanding of spinning fundamentals to the next level in this class designed to broaden your understanding of spinning. We will explore the relationships between combinations of timing and direction with a variety of stalls and stall combinations. Next we challenge our mastery of T&D by taking it to the inside planes. Last, we explore the frontier where T&D breaks down as we leave behind the two dimensional conception of spinning.

Insides Polyrhythm and Atomics /w Greg
Explore three topics in advanced poi. Insides open up a world of tricks that mirrors the one you know
but exists inside the space that you create. Polyrhythm gives a whole new look to old technique by switching up the speed of your circles. Atomics opens up the world of clashing planes and breaks down the system of timing and direction that informs most modern spinning.

Intermediate and Advanced Partner Poi w/ Silence
This class covers technique and choreography in relation to poi duets. Technical emphasis will be on two-person interactive moves, rather than simultaneous moves. How to choreograph a routine from scratch will also be discussed. Bring a partner or find one in class.

Dance Dance Information w/ KT
A set of poi can make a great dance partner. Explore poi manipulation from a dance based perspective with an emphasis on integrating body and prop.

Video
We’ll show you all the best object manipulation videos the internet has to offer.

I'm glad I got to hang out with you guys and watch you do your thing! Sorry the turnout was so dismal, I was surprised that even the firejam was very sparsely populated. Must be the freak weather and time of year.

I had a blast though, and will hopefully have a vid of the firejam out soon (or at some point).

Peace,
- Sui

By exploring how a few simple tricks relate to one another, an understanding of poi emerges that will make future learning easier.
2. Intermediate/Advanced Poi Spinning- Jordan Campbell

The goal of this class is to teach you how to develop all the skills necessary to transition from an intermediate to an advanced poi spinner and how to recognize what gaps remain in your spinning repertoire. We will explore concepts including concepts like spin and antispin flowers, isolations, linear isolations, 1.5 beat weaves, hyerloops, polyrhythms pendulums, inversions, insides, introversions and hybrids. After the class you will likely not be able to do all the moves we went over but you should know what you need to learn and how to go about learning them.
Explore various types of staff movement, develop technique to control the staff and learn to move your body in graceful unison with the staff. After this class you will be able to spin confidently in a variety of ways and will have a clear understanding of how a staff moves and how you must move with the staff.
5. Intermediate/Advanced Staff Spinning– Jordan Campbell
In this class is designed to fill out technique: we will take a quick tour through different ways to pass the staff from hand to hand, work on some pendulums and non-linear planes and then learn technique that uses the body like learning to use your body as a lever to move the staff and how to use the momentum of the staff to initiate body movement.

Join us at The Vulcan Spinagogue for a weekend of intense object manipulation of ALL KINDS including poi, staff, double staffs, hoop, whips, juggling, contact, and more.

What is Spinagogue? Check out our past events:

July 2007 Poi intensive: http://youtube.com/watch?v=fYZP_K575rI

Nov 2007 Staff intensive: http://youtube.com/watch?v=7s32VKyXfXo
Spinagogue is a weekend intensive designed to radically improve your skills while immersing you in Bay Area fire scenery: 28 workshops, three days of food, dinners are prepared by our master vegan chef Joshua the Traveling Chef (http://joshuaploeg.blogspot.com/), a fire jam and a special sneak preview performance by the Vulcan Crew.

The Vulcan is a hotbed of fire arts located in the heart of "lovely" industrial East Oakland. In addition to hosting the east bay's best and brightest spin jam, the Vulcan is home to over 100 local performers and artisans of all types. Five workshop spaces and living areas inside the Vulcan will host our festivities. Free lodging (sorry, just couches) will be available Friday through Sunday for participants from outside the bay area. Additionally, hotels are available locally starting at about $45 a night.

A typical day at the Vulcan? http://youtube.com/watch?v=HpjnvqKeoHs
