Alien Jon POI Workshops in Seattle THIS weekend...

Alien Jon Workshops HERE in Seattle!!! Please help spread the word about this fantastic workshop that Luxotica is helping to host…

This will be his first time visiting Seattle and don’t miss it! We will be offering 3 workshops over the weekend. Attend 1, 2 or all 3…we guarantee you will learn something new in every session.
<br>
RSVP’s are required as there is limited space. Please email: erin@luxotica.com.
<br>
***********************************************<br>
1st Workshop: "Learning to spin from your Body" <br>
There is a tendency amongst both beginners and advanced spinners, playing at the edge of their technical ability, to plant their feet, lock up their body, and put all of their focus on what their hands are doing with the poi. This workshop gives you the foundational elements, forms, and understanding you need to increase your freedom of movement. You'll develop the tools you need to easily take that move you're learning and move your body freely with it. <br>
1st phase of class: Miming poi <br>
•	Footwork basics
•	Footwork Drills (expect to be a little silly)
•	The Hallway and keeping your bearings
•	Timing and direction with your arms: the 4 modes
•	Move your feet and your arms at the same time!
•	Focus points and transition points for the 4 modes wile turning!! <br>
2nd phase: getting poi involved <br>
•	4 modes with poi
•	Footwork drills with poi!
•	pinpoint your problem areas and polish them
•	Where can we push it: Pirouettes and other silliness!
<br>
******************************************************************<br>
2nd Workshop: "Spinning Geometry with 1 and 2 poi: Time Sculpture" <br>
In this workshop we'll take a look at the fundamental geometric attributes of poi when spinning , as they relate to you and the space around you. We'll explore how to move circles around your body, touching on basic building blocks that even advanced spinners have missed. Then we will explore the relationship and symmetries of 2 circles. Finally we will move beyond the circle into expansive and contractive orbits, and the patterns you can make with them.
<br>
1st phase will be: The Geometry of a circle from 2D to 2.5D <br>
•	Anatomy of a circle <br>
•	Figure-eights and Cross-Points <br>
•	Pushing and pulling the circle <br>
•	Move through zones around your body <br>
2nd phase: how the poi dance together <br>
•	Symmetry and Harmonic Proportion
•	Stalls
•	Loops and Arcs
•	Linear moves
•	Continuous Assembly Patterns (CAPs)
<br>
*****************************************<br>
3rd Workshop: Tech poi and group requests
In this workshop, we will delve deeper into the space surrounding your body, the frames and negative space your limbs and body can create, and how your poi interact with it. This is an an elegant and more easily understood take on some rather technical poi spinning. Then we will open up the class to participant directed questions and request for technical and advanced moves and patterns.
<br>
1st Phase: Advanced use of Body Space
•	Framing your poi
•	Insides
•	Inswings
•	Introversions
•	Inversions
2nd Phase: Group questions and exploration
The group can explore more advanced moves they want to learn!
<br>
<br>
Jonathan Everett AKA Alien Jon, has been spinning things since childhood, starting with himself, and expanding to socks with tennis balls in them and sticks found in the woods of Maine. Starting with his first pair of devilstix in 1995, he officially entered the world of object manipulation. In 1999, from a foundation built on devilstix and drawing inspiration from T'ai Ji and Aikido, he began spinning glowing objects on strings or in socks at "all night dance parties". After meeting other spinners he learned that objects had been spun in a similar manner for millennia by ancient cultures from around the world. This gave rise to the discovery of fire spinning, and his dedication to the art of contemporary poi began.
<br>
From devilstix and poi other object manipulation quickly followed: Sphereplay, staff, meteor, diabolo, and astrojax to name a few. These talents have been melded with a love of music and dance, including liquid, illusional, and funk styles. Jon loves to play and lives for the spark of innovation and creativity, while further honing his skill through diligent practice.
<br>Jon has performed at the Fringe Benefit for the 1st Annual Boulder Fringe Festival, the 1st Annual Boulder Juggling Festival, Ratuva Circus performance and workshops, COSM Fire, the 2007 Burning Man Conclave, and with the ExtraTerrestrial Circus Experiment. He has taught classes around the country in poi, sphereplay, and devilstix at the Double Rainbow Ranch, Boulder Circus Center, 1st Annual Boulder Juggling Festival, Shepherd Valley Waldorf School, SphereCamp East and West, Domba/Mystic Jewell dance Studio, Wildfire (CT), Florida State University, and at Renaissance Festivals country-wide. He also teaches private lessons.
<br>
<br>
**************************************************<br>
When: <br>
•	Friday March 27th 7-9PM - Intermediate<br>
•	Saturday March 28th 7-9PM – Intermediate<br>
•	Sunday March 29th 7-9PM – Advanced<br>

Fire dance lessons?

Me and some members of my roller derby league are looking for an instructor to teach us the basics of fire poi, fan, staff, etc. I know the basics of poi and staff but would like to expand my overall knowledge of fire dance. I am new to Seattle and do not know of anyone offering fire dance lessons.

If you do, please message me directly. Please note that as a league we do not have indispensable amounts of cash but will happily compensate you if your rates are within our means.

Thank you.

You hear about the Winter Solstice?!

For the last three years, various Fire Artists from around Seattle have created a performance in the International Fountain at Seattle Center for their Winter Solstice Celebration (December 22nd and 23rd this year). Happy with the results over the last three years, the folks at Seattle Center have decided they would like to turn this performance into a festival and we need your help.

The plan this year is to fill the grounds around Fisher Plaza and The International Fountain with fire sculpture, fire performance, pyro and more. There is opportunity for daytime activities as well as evening time programming and events.

We have some amazing sculptors and performers lined up but we still need performers for the collaborative performance that takes place inside the Fountain. We are also looking for help with fire safety for the event.

If you are interested in participating, please contact me ASAP – we have already begun rehearsing but we are about 6 people short of what we need to properly fill the fountain with fire.

Requirements: poi skills – plus one other tool – fire hoop would be awesome (we have 2 hoopers now) – staff or double staff/batons also really great

The choreography is somewhat basic – the impact comes from the volume, placement and pattern of the fire

Rehearsals are Thursday evenings on Capitol Hill – the shows are on Dec 22 & 23 and there will be a tech/burn rehearsal the weekend before.

You’ll use your own tools for the most part – fuel is covered – costuming is your own but is pretty basic/cheep & easy to get.

camp in Tuva

Dear Friends

Thank you for your interest to our music.

Last summer we held a throat singing camp in Tuva.

We had 14 students from around the world - 8 of them were from the US, 2 from Australia
2 from Denmark, 1 from France, 1 from England.
After arriving in Tuva, the students spent 1 week in Kyzyl, the capital city.
They were able to see many tourist attractions, see a Tuvan shaman,
and attend the Naadym - National Harvest Celebration.

The students then went on to spend 1 week in the deep taiga, with members of the Tuvan throat singing group Chirgilchin,
learning various styles of throat singing, traditional Tuvan instruments, as well as the Tuvan language.

This summer, we are trying to get 2 groups to go to Tuva again, in either June or July.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Please check our photos made by Russell Roesner - our student.

Ang and Ian will be attending a PURE Cirkus performance till around 11 but I will be on hand form 8:30 onward for anyone interested in general drinking and screwing around with fire.

I have some new fire-breathing to show off, and would like to learn some new double-staff technique if anyone has some. We have a few fire-toys to play with - poi, fire-nunchuks and double staff.

As usual, I'm willing to safely teach anyone willing to learn how to play with them.

I might even give a lesson on fire-breathing...

Fire-play at our house Thursday evening 6-21-07 with special guests!

So because our weekends are filling up fast we'd like to change the weekly fireplay at our house to Thursday (in true F.U. fashion), plus it's hard to get up on Monday to go to work, when whatever happens Thursday night I only have one last day at work before the weekend instead of just starting the week out.

So.... this Thursday in south Seattle about 9pm or darkish. Bring what you need and come have some fun with fire!
message me if you need directions.
~peace~

PS - This Thursday we will be having special guests Guitar Doug from the Seattle Sinner, Rob from RJB Photo (doing a fire photoshoot for next month's Sinner magazine cover!!) and last but not least...... PANTERA POLES Seattles top rated exotic dancer!

Message me for directions if you haven't made it over yet.

Hi All,

I'm takin' the reigns-- here's yer spin jam. Fire Spinners and Hoopers are all welcome here!

Sunday, 4/22, Earth Day!
2pm til 5pm (later if y'all want to stay)
Gasworks Park
map: tinyurl.com/3xdgyb

Rain or Shine!
I chose gasworks park this week because there is a 60% chance of rain this Sunday and Gasworks has a covered area that we can spin in!

If anyone is coming from the Central Area or Capitol Hill, I have room for one + equipment in my truck.
Buses suck to Gasworks Park-- if you are bus bound, let me know and I will organize the spin jams in a more accessible park when the sun starts to shine more.

Much Love,

Ms.Fire

Who wants to learn rare Gypsy dances?

Hey my name is Sarah and I am a member of the Bay Area dance force Ultra Gypsy. We're invading the Pacific Northwest on April 13-22nd so watch out! Just want to make sure the peeps up north take advantage of the crazy knowledge our members have. Privates are available with bellydance legend Jill Parker, Ultra Gypsy's Co-Director Rose Harden, Sarah White (me) and Debra Rubin (for yoga).

My thesis was on the art and culture of the Romany people, so I have a wealth of first-hand in-the-field experience living with Gypsies being the first ever to document certain dance styles from India, Egypt, and Turkey. Want to learn? We're excited to meet you, so contact us at ultragypsyrose@hotmail.com to schedule your privates. Check out www.ultragypsy.com (tour page)

Sarah White is a San Francisco native with a degree in Performing Arts & Social Justice from Friends World Program. She has completed detailed ethnographic research documenting the arts of Romany people spending a year with the Kalbeliya "Gypsies" in Rajasthan, studying with a Roman ("Gypsy") family in Istanbul, and the women of the Zar (a trance dance) in Cairo. Sarah has an extensive performance background with training in 25 different dance forms, martial arts, gymnastics, and the flying trapeze. Growing up Sarah was in the Destiny Arts Youth Performance Company, a diverse group who addressed pressing social issues through dance, theater, and spoken word. She was the star dancer in Neil Young's internationally touring movie and rock-opera 'Greendale' and has been a member of Project Bandaloop Youth Group (an aerial dance company) and Ultra Gypsy Dance Theatre Company since she was 16.

Hi! I just relocated to Seattle and would like to get in touch with other fire-breathers, but will settle for anyone who wields fire. Any suggestions as to a weekly practice or something I can get involved with?

I moderate a couple of tribes that pertain to fire (fire-breathing and Fire University), but would rather join someone elses troupe than start a new one in a city full of fire-dancers.

Hiya folks,

Just so you know....

Looking for fire action in the South Sound? I've recently started hosting spin jams at my house in Olympia. It's weather permitting, in a spacious and welcoming back yard. 8 p.m. til whenever. Steady or pouring rain cancels, but a drizzle won't.

1009 Puget St. NE, Olympia 98506. Send me a message if you want to hear more!

**repost**
Date: Saturday, May 20th, 2006 (Rain or Shine)
Time: 1:43pm
Place: Seattle Center - on the lawn to the north of the fountain. (If you are facing the Key Arena entrance the fountain is on your right, the lawn is to the right of the fountain.)

Remember- Listen for the whistle. I'll blow it at exactly 1:43pm. It's another 5 minute free-for-all (We can do it!) I'll blow the whistle to signal the end of the fight, please STOP FIGHTING AND LEAVE THE AREA right away.

*Important* - Please conceal your pillows, and tell your friends to conceal their pillows. We don't want people hanging around before the fight with pillows in their hands. A shopping bag or backpack work well. Mike belted his to his stomach (under his coat) pretty successfully.

AFTERMATH GATHERING AT LIBERTY - immediately following the fight. Come have a drink and maybe some sushi with your pillow fight family! Please, oh, please, I want to meet you all!

MOST IMPORTANT (!!!) - Pass this along to absolutely EVERYONE. Fill your cars with pillow fighting friends :-)

REMINDER-

Velocity, this Saturday 4-6pm.
Remember to protect your sharp bits. I invited the Velocity administrative assistant (the girl that I rent the space from) to join us for some playtime, so make me look good eh? We're back in the HUGE space ("MainSpace" on the 2nd floor).

Bring something to play with. Bring mats to roll around or to crash on. Leave stilts at home unless you are absolutely sure they won't scratch the floors.....uuuhhh...what am I forgetting?

See you there!

Looking at Lakota Fire sites tomorrow...

Greetings to my friends of the flame,

I am going up to the Pine Ridge reservation tomorrow - Monday - to further plan out our May tree planting event. While there, I will be looking at possible fire sites and talking to people about their ideas about a fire workshop and/or demonstration.

Hopefully I will also be throwing some torches with some Lakota friends while I am there and I will likely pull out my fire staff. The poi I am still pretty novice on... and it might not give the optimum first impression of poi... so I may hold off on that and let those better trained bring them that particular magic.

We have had preliminary discussions with our Lakota partners regarding different possible activities and events in May. We should get firm plans made this trip including some clear definiton regarding a possible mini-powwow on late Saturday afternoon... after the tree planting is done.

The Lakota have been dancing for thousands of years... so this will give me the chance to meet Lakota drummers, singers, dancers and those that organize these folks into local powwows on a regular basis.

I hope to find a few among them that might be interested in some fire work.

There are about 8 or so of my fire friends that are now starting to plan for a fire dancing workshop and/or demonstration performance on May 19 & May 20 on the Pine Ridge reservation. If YOU are interested in doing this with us... send me an email and include a direct email address (i.e. NOT via Tribe.com)... and we can bring you up to date on preliminary thoughts and developments.

Also please let us know if you would specifically be interested in doing a May fire workshop at Pine Ridge?...or just a demonstration/performance? or both?

What would you see YOUR role being in any demonstration, performance or workshop?

If May is not feasible... anybody available to possibly do some earlier preliminary work up there in South Dakota in April?

More soon...I travel with the morning tide to another land far away...:>)

Reposted from Cb on Slinging in the Rain, in case you didn't catch it:
-----------------------------------------------

Next open practice: Saturday January 14th.

What: open practice - no fire
When: 3:30-5:30pm
Where: Velocity - Studio 3 (3rd floor) 915 E. Pine in the big building across from the park
How much: $1-$5 donation goes toward space rental

Notes: This will be in a different room than last time. If any of you ever came to the KAOS practices a couple of years ago, it's in the same room. This one is smaller than the theater we had last time, but still huge. There are mirrored walls, stereo access and marley floors. Marley floors are non-slip rubber/vinyl floors intended for dancers and although it appears to be a protective cover, I don't want to risk scratching it. So please remember to protect your sharp bits (fire staff ends, nuts/bolts, studded belts, etc....). There will be no shoes allowed on the marley floor. Bring whatever you feel you need to practice on. Fire practice tools and hoops are most common but don't let that stop you from bringing more. Stilts are ok, but if you are not experienced with them please bring a spotter and stay far away from the big windows.

Be there on time as we'll need to start cleaning up for the next renter at 5:20.

I got me a staff over the summer, and Edie was kind enough to get me into the palm torches. I am still not really deft/gracefull w/. the staff, and I'd like to get good. Who gives lessons? Where can I practice? How much do I need to practice to get good?

I love the fire, would like to be able to play more.
I'm interested in going to see different kinds of dance - like Balinese, for example - in order to get good ideas for performance moves. Anyone know any good shows or cultural arts festivals coming up? I'm going to look a little online and ask around, and if I find anything, I'll post here.

I also just saw the most amazing, sensual, sexy fire eating performance over the weekend. I must gossip about it in person - gorgeous, the whole crowd just about grinding on their neighbors while watching. HOT stuff.

Hi all,

I just caught word of another video that includes footage of our fire drumming:
(we are at about 2/3 of the way through the video if you're too impatient to watch all of it :)

BTW-- this site is awesome. Peruse it if you haven't had a chance yet.

Naming a Fire Troupe

In light of our recent name change from Ignis Devoco to Spinergy Arts, I thought this bcwa post was HI-larious...
Once I saw this matrix of how to pick
a fire performance name. In one column you chose a "sexy" name and in the other you chose your
"fire" name, put them together you get a fire performance name like Sinewy Ember or Boobies
EnFuego. I think its the same thing with Hippy Ravers, only the two columns are Techno and Hippy
so you get names like PsyberTribe here. Other possible names are Robo Wizard, Level 12 Roaming
Warrior.
boobies en fuego! ROFLMAO! I'm glad we don't fall into that category!

Wow, what a combination-- poi moves with yoyo moves. Now I have to figure out all these moves AND figure out how to set this on fire...

Lovely name... deviations of synergy have been becoming an odd theme of my life of late. Hope to see some of you at the decompression party, and if anyone knows of a group forming for this year's BM with room for one more (got a driver's license and will have money to pitch in), please let me know! Thanks Ms. Fire.
