Check it out!
Stiletto 2.5 Workshops the afternoon of Saturday, July 21, 2007 - WOOOHOOOO!
Come one, come all - you will have THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE! :)
Workshop pre-reg form is in this tribe's photo gallery, ready for you to download and print...
since the website pre-reg form link (www.spiralhappens.com) is busted and won't be fixed until Rachel gets back from Europe... :(

See you all @ Stiletto 2.5 - The Great American Burlesque!
Show info: http://www.spiralhappens.com/stiletto.html

Workshops:

VENUS DEMILLE
~ PASTIE MAKING ~ 11am - 1pm ~ $25
Learn how to make your own pasties just like the ones worn by yesterday’s (and today’s) burlesque stars! Tired of the limited selection of
sequined pasties available at your local “Novelty Store?” Would you like to make your own customized pasties that match any outfit or
have a unique shape? Learn a no-sew technique to make custom pasties that fit you, match your costume, and include a tassel on it that
really spins! We will make the basic fabric-covered and finished pastie in class, then discuss various methods of embellishment. We’ll also
discuss the ins and outs of wearing pasties, and if you’re willing, try them out in class and give them a spin!
All basic materials are included in the workshop fee, but bring your own fabric if you’d like to match your pasties to an existing costume.
*Spirit Gum and rhinestones available for an extra fee if desired.

JEWEL OF DENIAL
~ BEGINNING BURLESQUE CHOREOGRAPHY & PERFORMANCE ~ 1pm - 3pm ~ $40
Curious about burlesque, but don’t know where to start? Well here’s your chance to show us what you’re workin’ with! In 2 hours you
will learn a simple, 2-minute burlesque routine that you will actually perform that night at the show! Jewel of Denial combines 7 years of
retro dance study and 4 years of burlesque experience to guide you through striptease, staging, and choreography techniques. We will be
shimmying and shaking (NO NUDITY) our way through the 1960’s go-go rhythm of Chick Habit featured on Quentin Tarantino’s newest
movie: Death Proof. All levels are encouraged—no dance, costuming, hair or make-up experience required. Live the fantasy!
Costuming requirements: *Souvenir Stiletto t-shirt and black gloves—provided by Stiletto!, short black skirt, any danceable black boots
with a heel, black full coverage underwear; *Stiletto t-shirt size: S M L XL (circle size t-shirt you would like for this workshop)
Optional: black fishnets, jewelry, hair flowers, etc.
If in doubt, just bring a bunch of stuff to choose from!
Make-up and Hair:
Make-up artist Jennifer Taylor will be there ready to glam you up! But you will be expected to do your own basic make-up, so either
come ready, or bring everything you need to get the job done. This may include false eyelashes, curling irons, etc.
Hair will be a simple ponytail on top of the head. If you have wigs, falls, or other fancy hairpieces or know how to do a 60’s do, bring it
on!

APRIL EXOTIC BLEND - CANCELED DUE TO RAIN

Hey everyone -
So sorry to say it, but I am canceling tonight's (April) Exotic Blend. :(
The rain is supposed to last all day and even if it stopped this afternoon, the patio @ the coffee shop would be a big puddle - not so fun to dance in.
Stell Coffee & Tea is much too small inside to move the showcase indoors, so unfortunately that is not an option. :(

There is no EB in May due to Tribal Fest, but June 15 EB is ON!
The theme is DISCO - YAHH!
Hopefully the gorgeous gals I had lined up tonight will join us then...

Thanks everyone for your support of Exotic Blend!
Until June...
XOXO!

Hello,

My best friend recently got engaged and said something about getting a belly dancer for her wedding. So I told her about all the shows I attend so she left me in charge to find a belly dancer. So here I am. I'm was wondering if anybody could find me someone who could dance for about 20-30 minutes in Glendale on May 26th.

If interested, please email me, Mandy, at Sweetheart1678@yahoo.com with your type of dancing style and your costs. Thanks!!

Lamenting

Greetings

After driving to the ends of the earth (yes Palmdale is really far from San Diego) for another fine belly dance event; I am lamenting the lack of events in my local area. Inland Empire has undoubtedly some of the finest events around. But it seems we must drive for hours to go to wonderful events. When I find myself driving down a desolate road forever long, I think, “and why is this event held here?” Tribal Fest is a perfect example. It’s lovely but it’s really far from everything unless you already live there. Hwy 138 to Palmdale is really only perfect for a CSI episode.

So how do you kids do it? We have a plethora of tribal dancers, teachers, and vendors in San Diego. We have a myriad of choices for venues suitable to hold such a thing as a festival. Hell our weather is near perfect most of the year. So what gives? What is the one big factor we are missing?

Funding? Are we just missing the big Sugar Mama to open the wallet up front?
Organizer? Someone/small group that really puts these things together?
The name? Are we lacking the fabulousness that is you?
Are we just cursed?

What is it?

Some of the members of Oojam invited me to the Punk RAQ performance last night and I'm very glad that I went. It was different, interesting, refreshing and unique (at least for me). I had a great time watching all of the performers, and every one of them alone was worth the price of admission.

So thanks for the great show.

I took some pictures: http://www.renaissancefaire.net/punk-raq.htm

Hope you enjoy them.

The oh so enchanting TEMPEST will be teaching a workshop at Punk Raqs this year:

The Workshop:
"Dancing Darkly - Introduction to the Art of Gothic Belly Dance"
For all level dancers – conceptual meets performance – understanding the key elements of what makes a performance truly Gothic, and focusing on the fusing of the dance, attitude, and aesthetic to create a new entity. There will be a heavy emphasis on presentation and presence, ethics and style, and learning to look at your dance as a work of art from beginning to end.

About Your Instructor:
Tempest is an artist, designer, dancer, and writer currently based in the Bay Area of California. Although she enjoys studying what tradition has to offer, Tempest loves exploring the dance through unusual music and creative costuming, pulling on her visual arts background to "paint a picture" with the dance; engaging the audience through dramatic embodied storytelling, passionate expression, and sensuous, mesmerizing movement. She finds inspiration for her dances in many eras, places, and faces, from ancient cultures and spiritual myths worldwide, to the work of silent film star and original vamp Theda Bara, and turn-of-the-century dance goddess Ruth St. Denis. She is most well-known for her Gothic Belly Dance performances and instruction, and is featured on the first ever GBD performance DVD produced by WorldDanceNewYork entitled “The Darker Side of Fusion.”

EMP Releases Two CDS at Punk Raqs

Hey all!

Exciting news! Eventide Music Productions (the home of Solace) will release two CDs at this years Punk Raqs event. You can pre-order and pick up your copy there, or it will ship Monday June 26.... Here's more info:

secure.infinities.com/commerc...main.cfm

You can pre-order Maduro's new album Shimmer Sustain (will ship June 26 OR you can pick up your copy at Punk Raqs, which will feature Tempest as a workshop instructor). As I've said, this record is a brilliant cross of Pentaphobe and Kraftwerk. Twisted sounds, funky beats, and plenty of dark bits with a playful edge. Play with me...

You can also pre-order the long awaited Gothic bellydance inspired compilation Strange Flesh. This hot little number has hot new material you are sure to love. Here is a partial track listing....with more songs being finalized as we speak. Please note the beautiful models Melodia and Sa'Elayssa. Delicious!

Solace: Bloodgoldoil
Shiva In Exile: Khundas
Karma Sutra: Prana
Tim Rayborn: Cask of Alban
Angels of Venice: Sin of Solome
Blind Divine: Love Is All We Have and Honeysuckle Vine

We will have a sample of both CDs available for a listen at Tribal Fest, and we hope to have some sound clips on the site in the next couple of weeks.

Blue Damsel will be performing to a track from Maduro's album for your viewing pleasure...

Well, if you missed Stiletto and are bitter, don't worry, cause we'll do it again real soon. But for now, we'd like to rub the sting out of your cheeks with a healthy dose of The Toids. Fantastic Balkan music meets jazzy coolness. But don't worry, we won't let you freeze. We'll keep the fires burning high with hot performances with Rachel Brice, Mardi Love and Elizabeth Strong.

Not enough, well then sign up for workshops with Turkish dance vixen Liz Strong teaching more livelyness than you can shake a skirt at, or percussion guru Tobias Roberson for Zilz, Zilz, Zilz! Registration forms can be found in in our photo album here on tribe.

Here's what I know.

1. People who do not know you and have not actually seen your work, but are ready to pass judgement upon you, are shallow.

2. These same people often lack self esteem and get by in life by tearing others apart. After all, if you have a perceived flaw, then they can't be all that untalented.

3. When these people say nasty things about you, especially to the point of excessiveness, they are telling you more about themselves than they can about you. It is actually an insight to thier true behavior patterns.

4. People who want to limit your creativity are threatened by the lack of their own.

5. When you exhibit leadership, there are those who will do anything they can to bring you down. They aren't willing to step up and fill your space, they just dont want anyone having more glory than they can achieve alone.

6. People who talk about you have uninteresting lives. They must pick on you since they have nothing to share from themselves. It gives them a perceived sense of meaning.

7. These people are sheep, believe what they hear and read and are easily lead by the mob mentality. If they were apes with sticks, they would join in on the beating of the weakest one to avoid being lowest on the pecking order.

8. The world is full of assholes. We need to find a toilet paper large enough to wipe them away.

9. Women have been oppressed since the beginning of time. We intrinsically believe lies told about us, think we are not worthy, believe the lie that we are somehow all sluts and ugly and flawed. It would be a revolution if women believed in themselves, knew their power, acknowledged their beauty, and held their own power. It takes so little to take away our truth.

10. No good deed goes unpunished. Meaning if you volunteer, do a good deed, help others, or simply add to the beauty and joy of the world; there will be at least one person to shit all over it.

Now the trick is to find someway to rise above this. To hold on to your beliefs and be true to yourself. To find a way to ignore or let slide the nastiness of the world. To know you are strong and beautiful and right. To find it a game in psychology instead of an attack on you.

Hiding behind a computer screen has only advanced the power of the bully. Take your power back instead of reacting to the nonsense. This is not an easy task and the road is bumpy.

Little minds have little hearts. Fill yours with love and joy. Give that to the world and it will be a brighter place.

Peace,
Laura

Feminism+Burlesque=Psycho Bellydancers

Just kidding! Here is my final post-really-on the now winding down inflamitory posts on bhuz:

"Ishara, I am one of the officers of MECDA who also happens to be producing this show. I am currently the Treasurer of the Inland Empire Chapter in California. I am following this thread as time permits.

I think its interesting that people believe that because I have an interest in both forms of dance, that I am somehow less of a woman or bellydancer, and not fit to be an officer. I don't have to have the same opinion as you to do a good job at organizing ground breaking events in my chapter. At some points reading this thread I have felt like its us who have taken ourselves back 100 years, not the general public.

I think the most convoluted fact about this thread is that we aren't interested in fusing Burlesque and Belly Dance. We aren't interested in assiciating the two in general public forums or performances for the general public. We aren't interested in ruining anyone's job at the county fair. We aren't interested in being treated like less than dancers either.

What we are interested in is marketing to women who are adventurous and likely to try something out of the normal realm of activity. We are also marketing a show that it intended for adults and clearly states that. Don't come if you don't want to be a part of it.

Yes, Princess Farhana's workshop states: Burlesque for Belly Dancers. No, we aren't trying to make dancers use burlesque moves in their belly dance. However, as TribalDancer stated, bellydance doesn't hold ownership over a miriad of sensual movements either. In fact, this workshop may further clarify the difference between similar movements.

Yes, Venus de Mille is teaching a workshop about strip tease costuming. I'm not sure what is offensive or related to belly dance in this

Another point that has been overlooked is one of feminist concern. Because I'm naked I'm a whore or slut? Furthermore, because I choose to revel in my sexuallity I'm the above also? I'm sorry ladies, but I can be as suggestive and naked as I want, that doesn't mean that I have to have sex with anyone, nor does it mean that I'm likely to.

Like several people have stated, I feel that these threads are important. For the 20 or so folks that have posted, there are 100 or more who have read this thread and have come away with a clearer idea of what they think or believe about these issues. I think that is priceless and the best possible thing for the growth of our community."

So, I've been thinking a lot about the hoopla and censorship and trying to examine myself to find any corner where I might be trying to stifle people who don't agree or are different, and this is where it led me:

How sad it must be to live a life so frightened by variety, and so insecure of yourself that you must force other people to conform to you in order to validate your own choices.

I am so grateful to my parents for raising me to be open-minded, yet know my own mind. Though admittedly I am not always successful, I know it is behavior that I wish to encourage in myself, and there are many things that I love in my life that I may have been frightened of, or disapproved of, or otherwise thought I had no interest in. But through contact with very interesting people, my life is richer for the experiences. Some things I was right about. But now I *know*. Some things I'm just not ready for, but that doesn't make them wrong.

It seems that when people insist on everyone agreeing with their position on things, it's because they cannot handle being challenged on it themselves. And people don't want to think for themselves; they want to be told how to think, and then get up in arms if they've settled into one way and someone else comes along and say, Well, heck! What about this? (My favorite quote from Wag the Dog keeps popping in my head: It must be true! I saw it on TV!) It's easier to shut someone else up, or prevent them from doing things than it is to examine one's self. Growth is often painful.

There are some activities that are bad, but that's because they are physically or emotionally dangerous. But we must seek wisdom to know when that is the case, or if something just simply makes us uncomfortable. If we never stretch outside where we are already comfortable, we will never grow, and we might miss out on some really groovy things.

And that is really sad.

Below you will find my last post to bhuz for the time being. It has brought up some concerns about what is acceptable and not acceptable to put in the MECDA Happs, but also it has brought up concerns about officers and their involvment. Some healthy conversation would be great here. I'd really like to discuss this in an intelligent non-inflamitory way...

quote:
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Originally posted by zumarrad
I've also read elsewhere on the net that the organisers include people with fairly high-up MEDCA involvement, which may or may not be true, but which would, if true, or even widely believed, account for some more of the concerns.
------------------------------------------------------------------------

I can see why the advertising of our event might be of concern to some people. And MECDA certainly has the right to limit anything that it publishes or includes in its mailings. However, at this point there is no regulation (that we are aware of) that prohibits the inclusion of flyers that are not specifically related to belly dance. Furthermore, this publication goes to who? To belly dancers. Not to the general public, not to the mayor, but rather to dancers who are all adults and can make choices for them selves.

I don't believe that censorship is any way to educate other dancers or the general public about the differences between the two arts. Hiding or keeping information 'secret' is a control mechanism. I also believe that being an officer of MECDA is irrelevent to this event. I think that implying that any organization has the right to limit your personal activies is dangerous. Taking away peoples choices is a dark road indeed. Pretty soon people will be saying that performing Egyptian Shaabi is indecent, then maybe we'll prohibit the midrift from being exposed, and on down the line...

As we've seen on this thread, people who are smart enough to be able to read the flyer are smart enough to go to the dictionary and find the definitions of burlesque and belly dance if they are confused about the difference. After that adults are free (in this country) to make their own choices about what to attend and not to attend.

It is worth it to join Bhuz (for free) just to read this thread...
Basically, folks are up in arms about the "Burlesque/Bellydance" connection... With LOTS of not so nice comments and slams from one *FORMER* MECDA Desert Chapter President... Hmmmmm...

Anyway... Enjoy! ;)

The Gig in Hollywood, California, hosts “The Gothmare Before Christmas,” a fantastic line up of dark music during the Advent.
