Aniruddha Knight is the ninth generation of professional Indian dancers. But he's the first of his lineage who is half-American--and male.

He is tall, slim, and strikingly long limbed. Dressed in jewel-colored silk tunics and antique ornaments that are family heirlooms, he looks more like a handsome young maharaja than a traditional South Indian dancer. But at 27, Aniruddha Knight is the ninth generation heir of a 200-year-old family of professional dancers and musicians from Chennai, India. He is also half American. His father, Douglas Knight, married into this artistically rich family when he studied classical drumming on a South Indian mridangam at Wesleyan University, where Aniruddha's late grandmother--T. Balasaraswati, India's prima danseuse--and her two musician brothers had taught since 1962. This spring, Knight is touring the Northeast with his six-member musical ensemble (including his father) and new works in a program entitled "From the Heart of a Tradition."

That tradition is bharat natyam, one of India's six major--and distinct--classical dance styles. It is taught to every middle-class girl in India and now, with immigrant teachers and establishment of dance schools across suburban America, it is vigorously practiced by Indians and Americans alike. However, the version that Knight dances is stylistically unique. It originated as a temple offering performed by young women who were dedicated to serving God by retelling ancient Hindu myths through music and dance in the temple courtyard. It was art in the service of religion, an act of worship, not popular entertainment. Eventually, some of the dancers were inducted by local princely families into becoming court performers. A stigma attached to the professional dancer that only disappeared when dance was recognized as a national art form at the time of India's independence in 1947, when the patronage of all dancers and musicians was taken over and sanctified by the secular government.

It was in this climate that Balasaraswati was recognized as the greatest Indian dancer of all time. Dance for Knight, as for his grandmother, is spontaneous, not rehearsed as the music is: as the ensemble sings a composition, he improvises movements; he follows the music, even joins in. He takes the lead, giving his accompanists a cue to move to the next line of text. In short, there is constant communication between dancer and the accompanists. The star of the show is first the music, then the dancer, who still uses the old compositions handed down as prayer, a love song to God. As Bala describes it, the aim is to create joy through beauty--a transporting ecstatic experience that is shared by dancer and audience through melody, rhythm and mime. Done right, the dancer could transport the audience through a near out-of-body experience into a rapturous state.

Knight's mother, Lakshmi, Balasaraswati's only child and longtime vocal accompanist, died of cancer in 2001. A highly trained singer, she did not learn to dance until late in life when she realized that this rare art would die out if she did not carry on the tradition. She became Balasarasati's principal pupil and, before Aniruddha was born, was a well-known dancer accompanied onstage by her mother who sang for her in an ironic role reversal. Lakshmi and Douglas raised the infant Ani in their idyllic New Jersey home on the wooded banks of a river, surrounded by music at all times: his father played the mridangam, his mother sang and danced in her puja room (a shrine devoted to the family gods). She taught a few handpicked American students: India's ancient arts were traditionally taught within the family, not to outsiders dropping in for an occasional lesson. Learning was through constant osmosis, an absorption of culture in the guru's home. "It is second nature to me," Knight says. "My mother performed onstage when she was seven months pregnant with me."

Knight is fluent in Tamil, his mother's language, and spends half a year in India, performing and learning from aunts and cousins who had worked with his mother. He has established a school and an archive of family history in Chennai. (The Smithsonian boasts an archive of Bala's performances, too.) It houses all the records of his grandmother's performances. "The pride of place is held by my great great grandmother's veena [a stringed instrument like a sitar]," he says. "She played it all her life, it's what she valued most. It's 175 years old, we revere it." Then he proudly recounts: "She was the first woman to play publicly, she composed thousands of pieces of music and played them for stalwarts in the profession. She changed South Indian music." Thinking back to these latest four generations of women whose mantle has fallen upon him, he feels blessed. Of his dual Indo-American heritage--when he's not in India, he's performing in such prestigious U.S. venues as Jacob's Pillow in Massachusetts and New York's Asia Society--he says: "It's isolating to identify with two cultures, it creates a split personality. I can never be just one or the other, it's a heartwrenching lonely process. But then, what I have, many don't have." Any regrets? "Yes, I lost my mother who was my friend and my teacher at a critical age. I miss her."

Critics invariably (and unfairly) compare Knight with his illustrious grandmother--at the peak of her career, after she had mastered her famed abhinaya (mime). But Knight is still young, and if his mastery of gesture, rhythm and movement is any indication, that fine abhinaya will come with maturity. What he has first to plumb is the full power of his strong masculinity, for which there is no precedent, as there are no male dancers in his ancestry. In the meantime, audiences are mesmerized by the beauty of his clean and precise movements. That he sings while he dances, anchors him firmly in the Balasaraswati tradition.

Brennan Murphey is known throughout the northwest for his prolific music production, uplifting live psytrance sets, and live flute and guitar work. He was the first performer on the west coast to publicly demonstrate an original implementation of the reacTIVision tangible user interface, whereby he mixes his songs using playing cards in front of a video camera. Originally from the high desert town of Taos, New Mexico, he has preformed his original music for energetic crowds alongside the likes of Osiris Indriya, Sirius Isness, and Rabbit in the Moon throughout the western United States. Epsylon is also a successful promoter and experienced professional music educator, heading up Spun Academy's music production program for over a year before recently founding his own Phoenix Fire Sound School in Portland. After spending several magical years in the industrial rave scene (warehouse spaceships) in Pittsburgh, PA during the middle to late 90's and after promoting about 20 raves during that same incredible mystical time period, I began my expedition as a dj. Actually, it wasn't that glorious, it happened by accident. A friend of mine left on vacation for a few weeks and asked if I would do him a favor and babysit his gear. I promptly agreed and his turntables and mixer sat in my basement for 2 days before I even touched them. I then decided I was going to "play" with them, so I went to a "new" little record store in Pittsburgh called Milk and bought my first tracks on vinyl. I went looking for some deep house and walked out with an arm full of Danny Tenaglia style tribal. After about 48 hours of nonstop trainwrecking I decided it was time to eat and get some sleep. I was straight up hooked on the vinyl crack.

Now seven years later, I am back to my east coast roots spinning melodic, chunky, dirty, minimal techno. I would not dare deny my west coast family a style that suits their tastes as well, so look out for new dubstep mixes with special mc work by Pete Clark. I want to thank anyone who ever danced while I played, you will never know how precious those moments are to me and I look forward to enjoying many more moments where we all meet on higher plane and the world slips away.

THE PROJECT SUMMARY OF:

"Music, Spirituality, Religion, and the Human Brain

Petr Janata, Ph.D. & Robin Sylvan, Ph.D.

Executive Summary

The connection between music, spirituality, and religion is so widespread as to be nearly universal. Since the dawn of humanity and across a broad spectrum of cultures around the world, music and musical experience have been an integral part of spirituality and religion. Strangely, there has been very little scholarly research on this topic. In this project, Drs. Janata & Sylvan, together with a group of leading researchers, will examine the relationship between these integral aspects of human culture in terms of underlying psychological and neuroscientific principles. Their approach is to examine this relationship at three levels of analysis. Accordingly, their project is arranged into three themes.

Theme 1: "Music and Spirituality: A Universal Connection"

A study of the link between music, spirituality, and religion in six study groups which represent a broad spectrum of religious and spiritual experience. Two of these groups are from mainstream Western religions (a Pentecostal congregation and a Jewish synagogue), two are from non-Western religions (a Hindu temple and a Yoruba/West African temple), and two are from non-religious but spiritual musical communities (the rave/electronic dance music scene, and the "jam-band" scene). Personal interviews and structured surveys administered to members of these groups will identify the aspects of music and musical experiences that create and/or shape spiritual/religious experiences.

Theme 2: "Music, the Self, and Spiritual Experience"

A study to examine the factors believed to play a role in spiritual experiences related to music in the context of structured psychological experiments. The experiments are organized into two projects that emphasize complementary aspects of musical experiences. Project 1 focuses directly on the memories, thoughts, and emotions that are triggered while a person listens to salient and non-salient excerpts of music. Project 2 focuses on the role of sensorimotor synchronization in the emotional and spiritual experience of music.

Theme 3: "A Neurobiological Theory of Music and Spiritual Experience"

The experimental paradigms elaborated in Theme 2 are adapted slightly to facilitate the collection of neurophysiological data. The physiological measures that will be collected include autonomic nervous system responses, the electroencephalogram (EEG), and blood-oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signals collected in functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) experiments. These data will be collected to test specific hypotheses about the brain circuits that are active during music-related spiritual experiences. Specifically, the researchers postulate that the medial prefrontal cortex, known to mediate interactions between emotion and cognition and maintain a sense of self, will show heightened activity at times when the subject experiences a strong emotional/spiritual response to the music. This response may come about when listening to a highly salient piece of music (Project 1) or through active musical interaction in the form of tapping along with rhythmic musical stimuli (Project 2).

Signficance

This proposal exhibits scientific merit in several ways. First, it scrutinizes commonly held beliefs about what makes music a potent emotional and spiritual stimulus across several disciplines and levels of analysis. Second, with a simple but clever manipulation of task instructions, it links emotion with a considerable body of research on sensorimotor integration. Finally, through its use of religious and secular study groups, the research allows a well-balanced and controlled assessment of how emotion, spirituality, and religiousness interact in the context of musical experience, which itself is at the core of human experience.

The implications of this research are broad. Religion, spirituality, and music are central aspects of cultures around the world. The public devotes tremendous time and resources in pursuit of them. However, the scientific understanding of these phenomena is weak, given their importance to our species. This project is an unprecedented effort to rigorously examine their interconnectedness.

A Peace Prayer & Meditation was Held on the 4th anniversary of the Iraq invasion.

We had a turn out of a small but powerful group of people committed to holding a space for peace, and loving-kindness for all the people of our beautiful planet - especially remembered in our thoughts: the People of Iraq. Although it was a small, and humble space, our hearts were great with desire for an immediate end to all violence and suffering in the Middle East.

We came up with an online forum dedicated to forwarding the intention we began on March 20th: Communicating our requests of the combatants, our wishes for healing and happiness for all those whose lives are impacted by the violence in the Mid-East.

Dear members of Spiritrave;

I am working diligently on the next phase of conscious dance event work and awareness that has brought us together here on TRIBE. Part of this phase includes a rebranding of the Project itself. As many of you are aware, and as many of you have communicated to me over the course of the last few months, there is some resistance to our use of the word RAVE in our name, despite our intentions and desires to lift the onus of negative associations with this word.

First of all, I want to thank you for standing by what the SPIRITRAVE tribe and project have stood for, despite occasional controversies. You are true warriors in spirit!

And so, the project is being given a new name, which has already been very well received by many in our community so far. This name conveys our intentions more accurately for the greater community. I'd like your thoughts on this name, as well as thoughts about changing the name here on TRIBE. If there is a majority of positive feedback, I will let the name change to THIS tribe stick. Otherwise, I will create another group with the new name. Let me know!

I thought I would share this affirmation/prayer/blessing/meditation in the spirit of empowering the momentum and flow of the beautiful loving energy we channeled at the Indigo Dojo on the 14th.

AFFIRMATION OF LOVE & LIGHT

I love and respect all parts and aspects of myself; body, mind and spirit. I unconditionally love and forgive myself, past present and future. I love and accept myself so easily through the power of forgiveness.

I let the light of wisdom and compassion shine into the very depths of my being, into every corner of my spirit. I let it transform every aspect of my personality, my mind, and my body into a force that heals, serves, and protects the very sanctity of my own life. I let this light be my guide, leading me forward into a future of peace and happiness. I let it fuel me as I walk the path of wisdom, compassion and spirit. I always go forward. No matter what happens to me, no matter what I think or do, I always go forward. I let this light fill me with such awesome energy, and I use it to fill each and every day with VALUE CREATING actions that serve my highest good. I know that when my highest good is activated, the highest good of everything and everyone around me is activated too!

As I continue to unconditionally accept myself, forgive myself, and love myself, loving kindness floods my spirit, healing, instructing, transforming all aspects of my being, past, present, and future. Mystic Vision

I have this idea. It’s a vision really, a dream...something I see, when I look inside... something that moves me. And maybe, this something speaks as well in your heart. Maybe it’s your dream too. Maybe we’re dreaming it together, and now I’m writing it down.

The idea-- the vision-- is this: That there is this place inside each human being that is the source of limitless happiness. Connecting with it invokes an awareness about all the feelings in the world, all the pleasures, all the pains & sadnesses-- that none of these sensations could ever possibly be bigger than this Happiness. There is this quiet voice in this dream, that gently whispers to me, that this Happiness without bounds is the ultimate reality, and that trusting and knowing this on every level of my being, all the way down to each and every cell of my body-- this is my inevitable destiny, and the inevitable destiny of every living thing in the entire universe. This vision is one where we have-- you and I-- caused our minds through vigorous practice to become so powerful, that we can and do always remember to wake ourselves up to this ultimate reality, this limitless joy. We cast off whatever nightmares, distractions, or stories we might have set up, or allowed in, knowingly, unknowingly, that pose as real. We may even find ourselves at a place where we deeply realize that no person, drug, possession, or amount of money can give us the the kind of feeling we get, dwelling in the Ultimate Consciousness. That no person, drug, possession or amount of money can deliver to us the real, and far reaching power that comes from abiding in this Ultimate Consciousness. We know it for what it is, by the miracles and benefits that flow through and unfold, blossoming into our lives. In the core of our being we feel such appreciation and profound love for even the simplest thing, like the miraculous breath of our lives, that rises and falls in our lungs, or the miracle of music and dance that manifests in the world all around us, right now, in this moment.

Looking at anything that has ever seemed to hold us back -- even if it has seemed hard at some time to feel the happiness within-- perhaps we begin to see that the obstacle is not so great at all, not so very real... and that perhaps it is the simple result of forgetting where and when and how true happiness abides in our lives right now, as it always has, and that we have the power to cause it to manifest from what may even appear to be nothing, even as we think, speak, and act.

And so, we find ourselves patient, kind, and forgiving with ourselves, as we remember our happiness. And we find ourselves patient, kind, and forgiving with those around us, as we remember our happiness. We are so surprised that as we let go of the ways of pain we lived by, and move forward just a little, and speak of this light just a little, perhaps saying “I have arrived. In the here and in the now. I am home,” we find that here and now, we are on this journey, together, waking up. The pathway becomes abundant with flowers of radiant color, and wish-fulfilling gems of every kind.

As we each become aware of this very precious life-moment, and this one, and this one, do we see endless, incomprehensible streams of miraculous, wonderful mystery that is our life.

In the vision, my great desire-- perhaps it is yours too-- is that we feel waves of happiness washing through our bodies, coming from inside. Coming from the heart like the light of the sun, that shines eternally from the place where it has always lived. We always feel it in moments just like this one when we at once remember! The light lives and shines in our hearts, in the center of our unique and precious being, always and unconditionally, and that it was only the temporary and fragile veil of forgetting that had covered it up from time to time in the past. Remembering now, how easily it falls away, and the illusion of darkness is dispelled!

Perhaps we also remember that this happiness doesn’t live in any imagined future, nor in the memories of fleeting experiences that once we might have enjoyed. We remember that our true happiness, and the ultimate reality of our being, is that we are the source, generating all possibility for what we experience, including the possibility of experiencing this fundamental happiness residing within us right now. Right now, in this moment that we share together.

As we remember and become aware of our true power to access this ultimate high, this fundamental, healing, loving happiness, in each and every precious life-moment, we awaken to ourselves, understanding that it doesn’t reside anywhere outside of us at all... not in any person, drug, possession, or amount of money. We awaken to the true nature, of our ULTIMATE SELVES, and come into our birthright, our true and limitless power to cause beauty, happiness, abundance, balance, true compassion, and harmony into the very depths of our lives, and into space and time throughout the entire universe. This awakening floods three-thousand realms of existence with light and immeasurable blessings in this single life-moment. In just such an instant you and I awaken in this way, the Cosmos awakens too. Immediately we together begin, in this moment, to manifest limitless peace and boundless joy in the environment directly around us, beginning with each cell of our bodies, and this happiness and peace emmanates outward in waves to touch the ground you gently walk upon, each tree you pass, the people around you as you sit or walk or drive... In this moment, you and I, have arrived. We are home. In the ultimate, we dwell!

Giving Thanks

Today I would like to thank George Bush and his active brotherhood. All of our lives

on this earth fulfill prophecy. Our lives are all a part of the grand plan of the

universe. Slowly but surely we are all learning our roles and the process is speeding

up as we approach the climax of this cycle. I do not see this as an end to a cycle

though, it is one of many beginnings we have encountered before and learned from the

previous cycle. I thank George Bush and his brotherhood because they are playing there

roles perfectly. They play a chaos into order role. We will not recognize our full

potential and appreciate life untill we are backed into a corner and our primal

defenses go up. It is really up to us how long we will be backed into this corner

before we learn the lessons we need to learn. The lesson is a fairly simple one, it

is that all we have to do is love. We must love untill we shine as a being and a

planet so bright that we can be seen from the most distant galaxies and spark wonder

in the minds of a new cycle and universe untill that cycle completes....and

another....and another.....and another.....into infinite. So todays prophecy is..... I

see a day in the very near future with myself and all my brothers and sisters from all

the tribes around the world in a huge gathering of celebration. And among us is the

infamous George Bush. We will all exchange storys of the final tests and laugh at how

silly all of our roles were. And Geoge and his brotherhood will be filled with a new

sense of love and joy they have not felt in a long time. And we will have a great

feast and show our new members the way of unconditional love and compassion. And our

Auras will ripple into the cosmos. I look forward to this day, but do not dwell on

it!

The Emergence Preview! What an Awesome Start!

Our December 9th Emergence Preview was an amazing, and beautiful success!

We had an awesome turnout of the MOST AMAZING PEOPLE.

So many people came up to me and other members of our crew during and after the event to share their enthusiasm, experiences of personal healing and release, revitalization, and heart-felt appreciation for the uplifting energy we all shared in.

All our artists delivered inspired music and performances... You really had to be there. And if you were.... well, you know!

Arcane, our Cyber-Shamanic Digital artist kept us entranced all night long with amazing, magical digital dreams. Thank you to the awesome drummers that helped us open the gateway to get the flow of light started, and who accompanied the nights music!
Our surprise guest-artist and co-MC Evolve (along with Pineapple Head, Drums, and Eric, Guitar) kicked off the night with some conscious flow and funk, followed by Medicus, who opened the dance floor up with his healing sets of original electronica, There was an encore by Evolve and his super-talented guitarist, Eric... after which we experienced some high-tech brain-syncronization, and some words by yours truly about turning dance and breathing into energizing trance states, and healing ecstasy. Eye-Awaken (aka Satyavan Om) provided the sonic framework for this tantalizing taste of what's possible with his inspired chakra-tuned original funkadelic soundscapes. Patricio from Space-Island got people moving on the dance-floor with the massive break-beat energy he is known for. Our sonic wizard, Azmyth (aka B-smarter) concluded the night with magical soundscapes of soul-stirring, ecclectic vibes.

To our artists: Thank you SO much! You were AWESOME!

We had a beautiful healing camp in the back of the space! Our massage and energy healers, and a lovely astrologer, were busy throughout the night, bringing nurture and rejuvination to mind, body, and spirit!

Thank you so much to our healers!

Raw foods, fresh coconut, and hot teas (while the hot water lasted!), sustained us through the night. Thanks to Lisa, Pineapple Head, and Noah for making that happen.

Many Thanks to all of you who volunteered, attended, and wished us well! I wish I could have thanked each member of our crew on the floor... and but for time and a list of you wonderful beings, I would have! So if you assisted with and participated in getting this event off the ground, send me a picture of you, your name, and a few sentences about yourself and what good YOU are bringing to the world (or would like to see happen), so that I can post the LIGHT THAT YOU ARE on the upcoming acknowledgment page on our website!

Peacewalk with Thich Nhat Hanh in L.A. October 08, 2005

While the Peacewalk on October 8, 2005 has come and gone, the energy and intention of that beautiful experience still resonates in the center of my being.

Imagine what it is like when hundreds, even thousands of people gather in one place, especially in a downtown area of a major metropolitan center, such as Los Angeles. One might envision a lot of talking, cell-phones, busy-ness, playing, and so on...

On October 8th, thousands of people converged on MacArthur Park in downtown Los Angeles, aligned with a specific intent, that of being peace. And so this is how it went: The audience of hundreds listened intently as we were guided through a meditation to generate peacefulness and mindfulness. The venerable buddhist monk and peacemaker, Thich Nhat Hahn, gave a brief discourse and instructed the assembly on how to do the walking meditation.

The walk began in absolute silence from the group. Sounds of the city, from the sirens of emergency vehicles, to cars driving by, and the light stirrings of respectful onlookers were not even disturbances. The consciousness of peacefulness was so focused and so powerful, that it was like walking through a dream, and consciousness was born in every step, and in every breath.

Only once during my hour-and-a-half walk did I hear a cell phone ring. Only once did I hear an infant child's brief cry.

"Peace is Every Step is a peace project, sanctioned by Thich Nhat Hanh, and developed and supported by the Sangha (community). Its purpose is to bring many peace organizations together to form one voice for peace in the world from a non-violent, non-angry heart. We are not trying to make peace, but be peace. There is no way to peace, peace is the way."
