I just got the invite from Danger Chicken to join the Documentation Posse, recording every element of the Center Camp Cafe Set-up. I'm very excited about this, as it involves writing, interviewing, and photographing. My favorites. Awesome. Also,...
I'm heading to the playa on the 8/19!!! Early access baby! This is a whole new world of radical self-reliance... being on playa without Opie??? And, honestly, I'd rather have other Staggers there than not...
So, for a million reasons-- the most important of which, of course, is giving back to the community-- get your butts signing up for volunteer groups and get your booties out there early! Two burns in one!!!

Re: Land Grab
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 4:41 PMI will see my brother this weekend in Sac. We are going to the Scottish Highland games in Woodland. Thats when I will know for sure what our plans are.He still hasn't told me if he is going or not. Either way I will know more next week. Nikki, you are in the PRIMEST position to get us a good spot. I wish I had a real talent . All I know how to do is opperate heavy equipment. My brother has a degree in photo journalism. If I ride with him, we will work together on something to volunteer with. If not I will try to do it myself. Remember, 8:45 and F - G -

Re: Land Grab
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 6:00 PMShel,
From what I have heard DPW needs equipment operators and also CDL drivers to bring trailers and containers to the playa and back to the work ranch. I think you have all the qualifications and more... and then there is your fantastic attitude. Really!! DPW is heavy on muscle but light on really qualified people. If I had my CDL I would be so there. Alas I only have my farm endorsement that actually allows me to drive absolutely anything within 150 miles of the farm. No training and no hazmat. Crazy!!
Nikk,
You go Girl!!!
I just might have to put a care package together for you for the land grab. I'm so jealous and happy that Stag is getting involved with nuts and bolts of the event. I truly believe in what all the volunteers do. It is good work and it is the heart of the event. -

Re: Land Grab
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 6:55 PMShell-- you definitely have the quals... I filled out the basic volunteer application form, and it lists all the various tasks people do... They need people for everything. The actual building of Center Camp and the ice structures and the Greeter's Station-- there's so much stuff that needs to get built. They want people to help put art out on the playa. The Playa Info people are SUPER friendly...
Anyhow... I will follow Motsky's instructions to a T on the land grab issue, but, if anyone else can get in early to help hold down the fort, it would be GREAAAAAAT. I'd really appreciate the effort! It's going to be lonely all the way out at 845 F/G pre-event. And, to be honest, I'm a little nervous about being out there alone. I was planning on hitching a ride in from Reno with Danny-- now I'm going to have to work on a ride share or something with other early access folk. I'm a little worried about being able to feed/care for myself so alone for the first week...
Anyhow, I know I can do it. I mean, for God's sake, I'm going to Africa by myself for two years after the burn... But tips and, mostly, votes of confidence will be appreciated! And company!

Re: Land Grab
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 7:35 PMI will know for sure after this weekend on what I am going to do. My brother is the key. If he doesn't come this year then I will gladley donate what skills i know to help build BRC. I'm just not sure who to get ahold of .

Re: Land Grab
Tue, April 22, 2008 - 10:18 PMNikki,
You will do awesome. All you have to do is remember-Water-Shade-Safety. Safety third that is.
I will do what I can to get in early(er). No promises but I have been thinking of strategizing with Robbidobbs about how I can lower her huge work load by starting the potty project earlier.
I would camp with the cafe crew for sure surroundings and to be in on things. I'm pretty sure they camp together and then split off for the event. You could do the land grab some evening after work or if they give you monday to settle in. You should be fed at the DPW commissary and crew leaders should supply you with tokens for meals as soon as you start working. There is always a vegetarian main entree at every meal. As long as you are working your water and food should be provided. If things fall through in a major way with ride share you can fly out here, stock up and take my pickup to the black rock as a back up plan. You might have to leave a shopping list with one of us for your burn week supplies. With your magnificent preplanning skills I'm sure all bases will be covered!!!

Tue, April 22, 2008 - 10:38 PMnikki,
wow, so cool to be out there early. doubt I can do that but if you need me to bring you any stuff just let me know.
if you do the land grab be sure to register the location on the computer so we can find it. assume around 8:45 and G.

Re: Land Grab
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 5:13 AMThanks all for your votes of confidence! I already feel better. And, as always, Motsky's logistical skills/insight are an invaluable fucking asset. Thanks. ;)
Shell, I would LOVE to have you out there. Of course, I would also love to have your brother with Stag!!! Since I don't know which to cross my fingers for, I'm going to watch the universe unfold her ever-brilliant plans... Were you, or anyone else for that matter, to want to try it out, fill out the "Volunteer Questionnaire" at burningman.com/participat...unteer.html with lots of enthusiasm and wait for the responses!
You are all SO generous in your offers to help bring me stuff, cause that's mainly what I'm worried about--- hauling two weeks worth of stuff in with no vehicle, especially because this necessitates my own shade structure, which I was going to sneak by without if I entered at the same time as yall... Motsky, I am really touched by your offer. It might be the missing link, if you're really comfortable with that. I learned to drive on a Chevy Blazer... Will you help me brainstorm as things get closer? I am also going to want all your brilliance on how to secure the land--once grabbed--if I'm camping with the cafe crew... Because it will be marked but uninhabited...
I have Monday night off and will land grab then for SURE. The crew has an air conditioned office trailer, so that'll help tons, and, they have electricity!!! I'm sure I'll find a way to send out word as soon as the grab is accomplished. I might bring a computer, just because I need the Peace Corps to be able to get in touch with me...
Wow. Who is this girl talking? Sure sounds like she has an exciting life!!! Anyhow, off to work so I can come home and costume ever-harder... Two weeks worth of playa wear!
More love and gratitude than you all can imagine.

Wed, April 23, 2008 - 9:11 AMSigh…Nik I envy you and am happy for you. I have always wanted to do early service but for me that just isn’t possible so I will have to live vicariously through your experiences. And with all the others please let me know if there is anything I can help with in regards to the “Restocking Nikki Rescue Team” we can’t have the first Stagger that hits the playa fall short with supplies. Enjoy a sunrise for me.

I'm sure everything will work itself our somehow. I'm planning to arrive very early this year if not before Monday then the middle of the night.

Re: Land Grab
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 4:41 PMHumm tried to think up a way to secure the land while your not living there... you could bring signs with you and just steak them into the ground with rebar so that way our whole area has like stag signs on it so nobody takes it :) did anybody here about the fact that they are making the space between the streets bigger and they are expanding the esplinade? can anybody conferm this i saw it on another tribe... think it was the BM tribe or on e-playa somebody saying they changed the city so it will be bigger living spaces between streets.... -

Re: Land Grab
Wed, April 23, 2008 - 10:37 PMI just applied for the Doc Posse as well, I hope I get this one it's a perfect fit for both of us! I was sorta dissed by the DPW but they have waaay more people than they need, so it's cool I guess. I don't give a shit if I have to wash dishes in the fucking commissary, I just want to arrive early, help create MY CITY, and get into the mix as much as possible. I can't help it, when I love something I try to learn as much and get as involved as I possibly can. It's a ridiculous notion, but I feel like if I'm not there to help create it this year, BRC just won't be as cool as it could have been. Since I'm officially a Stagger now, I'd be happy to participate in any land grabbing activities! On a side note, is it too late to register Stag Camp, it seems we're going to be fairly large and although we're not technically a "theme camp" we are still providing a valuable resource for first-timers who would otherwise be camping alone. (Not that there's anything wrong with that!) -
-
Re: Land Grab
Thu, April 24, 2008 - 7:55 PMHey Lonestoner--
See the thread "to theme or not to theme" on stag 1.0, before we moved over... We're pretty much all in agreement that it's not in our camp personality right now to register as a theme. I'm sure the land grab will go swimmingly-- the stars shine on Stag.
Side note, did you fill out the Volunteer Questionnaire on www2.burningman.com/people/ ???
No one can volunteer without getting this formality out of the way... I mentioned your interest to Danger Chicken (one of the Doc Posse coordinators)-- she said she hadn't received emails back from anyone she contacted. That being said, she fears some of her emails got snagged by spam filters. For anyone who's seriously interested, it's a shit ton of work--all day every day all week before the burn--but it sounds like a fabulous way to learn about the nuts and bolts of Black Rock. (That's what they do, literally create user manuals on each nut and bolt of Center Camp, with diagrams, pictures, inventories, tips, etc., so that future burns, when they are built by new generations, have a blueprint to start from.) I have permission to pass her email address along. No guarantees that I can getcha any farther than that, but it's a start!!! -
-
Re: Land Grab
Fri, April 25, 2008 - 6:33 AMOf course I filled out the volunteer questionaire silly girl! On Friday I got this email from Marie Camille:
"Howdy Pardner,
YeeHAW! Doc Posse's saddlin' up and rearin' ta go! Y'all are receivin' this here email because ya wanna be a part of the Posse and here's the straight shootin' truth.
We need well organized people who can: multi-task,keep track of many projects, document the activities of their assigned team, and communicate between team managers, Doc. Posse leader and each other. Below is a short description, if you are interested answer the questions below and we will send you more info.
WHAT WE DO:
During set up week the Doc Posse team writes down and photographs the set up process for the Center Camp Café. We are creating an extensive instruction manual and archive. Why? To make future set ups go as smoothly as possible. And during tear down, we inventory everything from each department.
We also interview the team leaders for each department on a daily basis. We want to know what went well, what didn't, and what can be done differently next year.
We want people who are approachable, friendly, and know how to ask great questions. We like people who like to pay attention to the details. We need good listeners who can draw out deeper information to get to the core of what we need to know. If this is new territory for you, or you're a bit shy. Never fear. We want to play to everyones strengths, and there's plenty of stuff that needs to get done. We will find a spot for you.
TIME COMMITMENT:
During the set-up week (August 18-23rd) it is necessary that most of the team be on playa. Obviously, ya gotta be here to see it, write about it, photograph it, and discuss it.
During the tear down week (September 2-5th) we create a detailed inventory for next year. Yes, we count screws -and even categorize them by type and condition. It is a necessary evil, but rewarding work and a lot of fun. (No, really, we have a lot of fun.)
WHAT WE NEED FROM YOU:
(please reply with the answers to these questions in # order and you'll be on yer way to some rip roaring good times!)
1) Legal name?
2) Are you up for the task at hand? Tell me a bit about your skills, your time commitment and why you would be a good documentation posse member?
3) Are you volunteering with another Café sub-team or any other Burning Man team?
4) Do you have your own digital camera you can bring to the playa?
5) Do you have cowboy regalia?
7) Do you have your ticket in hand? Is it at Will Call? "
I emailed back but have yet to receive a reply. I just sent Danger Chicken an email, and I'll send another from the office, just in case I did get eaten by the spam filters. Thanks again!

Re: Land Grab
Sun, April 27, 2008 - 5:04 PMI posted this in our old tribe thread and thought it would be fun to have here.
The Stag land grab stew requires few ingredient some prep and a little elbow grease.
Ingredients,
Early Entry(can be substituted by first in gate but only in the case where early entry is unavailable)
Target area info with contingency plan
Signs for street sign posts (3 or 4)
Signs for camp area (9)
Twine to mark camp and camp access road
Length and width needed to accommodate all staggers (last years figures were # on tribe times 630sqft and then square rooted. Then the numbers are adjusted to take in to account the width of the block)
Solar powered lights
Instructions,
First-Take early entry and use it. Then select camp area using Target area info--substitute contingency if need be. Measure out length and width pulling twine and placing signs as you go. Remember counter clockwise like everyone circling the man after he falls. Signs on corners are 45ed to the street away from camp. Layout and mark camp access road last. Place solar lights to illuminate signs on the road closest to the man and the turn in sign on the camp access road. Then place signs on sign posts directing from the outermost road to Stag Camp 2.0 Then you are done.
Special serving instructions,
This dish is best accompanied by Tecate or Pabst Blue Ribbon. -

Re: Land Grab
Wed, April 30, 2008 - 10:19 PMMotz, what about the bike anchors for the twine stratedgically placed around the parameter, and instituting the stagger camp interrogation techniquies for any potential tresspassers... aka the "secret code"..... You are the land grab guru.... hands down, : ) -

Re: Land Grab
Thu, May 1, 2008 - 5:48 PMDamn!!! I for got to mention the concrete and rebar stakes in my recipe.
Well just so you all know(I'm so forgetfull)
Perimeter signs take 2 stakes each and the signs for the way in have handy U bolts so you just need a wrench.
I may be passing the torch to someone(s) else on the land grab this year. Not because I don't want to do it but because there will be staggers other than I first on playa. I'm really glad I got to do it last year and will be offering all sorts of insight as to how it can be done to the SFOP(Staggers First On Playa).
Its good to be the guru. We will have to work out the code system as I couldn't remember specific names by the time other staggers joined Somnivore and me last year. Interrogation will be by the dreaded beer bong method. Take a hit or take a hit! Um.. no not really. -

Re: Land Grab
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 5:52 PMOk everybody...Land grab Strategy.
By earlier general consensus we are going with the same strategy as last year.
Last year target area was 8:45 and F with camp extending through the block to G.
Last year we hit 8:45 and G to H. There were some camps next to and in our target area last year so I put the camp in the clear on G.
If the city plan is the same as last year it will put us one block closer to the Esplanade which I think is a good thing.
We may need to change things up if the width of the blocks is increased from last year so that we don't end up farther out than we were. There is also the issue of where the portapoties are placed. They seem to change on a yearly basis. We don't want to be too close or too far from them. I'd say a good target would be no closer than 3/4 of a block and no further than 1+1/2 block away. What do you guys think of that? Also there is proxcimity to big sound camps and historically the deep end has been close to where we want to camp. I propose that we camp no closer than 1/2 block plus street separation if we are on the back side of the speakers and 1 block away if we are on the front side of the speakers. I think the deep end will probably be off of 9:00 again but you never know how it will be until the list comes out. Who knows where placed theme camps will extend to so we will have to take that in to account when placement comes out.
I am looking forward to when the design and map of the city become available because then we can adjust things if need be. -
-
Re: Land Grab
Mon, May 5, 2008 - 9:58 PMYes to the .75 to 1.5 blocks from toilets (last year was perfect). Doubt we can plan it but the coffee place being close by was really nice in addition to the pancake place. A supper nice way to start any day. As far as possible from the big speakers (hopefully they will be insulated/elevated off the playa. Closer to Esplanade is fine but one block closer is not a big deal to me if it isn't possible. For me 8:45 was ideal to escape to the playa either out the end of G at 10:00 or up 9:00 toward the Man. Thanks for engineering all this stuff. Good work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tue, June 10, 2008 - 8:24 PMI applied to work for the DPW and got a responce (thanks Mots)
The only problem is they wanted me on the1st and I can't get
that much time off. The man I spoke with has a really soft voice and the background noise
from the shop was really intence that day. I told him I could come out on the15th and he
said he would email me with the details. That was over a month ago.
Without confirmation, I cant take an extra week off. I won't show up early unless I know
for sure I'm on the early entrance list.

Re: Land Grab
Wed, June 11, 2008 - 7:00 PM"I'm terrified of fucking it up royally! ;+} "
Is exactly what I felt when I took it on last year. It turned out to be an easy decision even in the fog of no sleep for 36 hours. I will be indoctrinating in the land grabbing staggers the needed methodology and technique for a successful land grab. It is fairly easy and goes something like this.
1, Go to target area and check it out for having the right square footage for camp and already being occupied by a reserved theme camp or other camp. Adjust if necessary.
2, Check out the distance to the porta poties and nearby large sound camps. Adjust nearer or farther if necessary keeping account of #1
3, Measure and mark camp edges and camp access road.
4, Install signs to direct people to the camp access road on the road sign posts from the outer road to camp.
5, Determine the exact address of Stag Camp and post it in the database at Playa Info.
There is a bit of research and calculating to do but that can all happen in August. This is going to be a team effort this year so don't sweat it.

Re: Land Grab
Wed, June 11, 2008 - 8:51 PMmy plan right now is to try and be out there pre-event - this is confirmed via email with BMH but more data will be coming in the future to seal the deal. so the plan is to be ready to support the project on 18 August, the centercamp documetation project that Nikki is planning to work. I have been told we can begin to set up camp pre-burn but obviously it will be subject to more intense wind with fewer people around and being out at 8:45 somewhere. I'm thinking the whole thing over to ensure I've got all the logistics down. Perhaps set up dome at stag (land grab area) without the cover then set up a smaller tent near center camp to stay in then as the week draws to a close gradually move everything down to stag and cover the dome. I am really looking forward to this experience and solving the problems and challenges inherent in the whole process. I may need to bring a small trailer this time around but have not booked that yet. If I do will pick it up in Reno then reconfigure the load as I bring on water and supplies. As we get closer we can share the final details of SC so we have all the stuff we need to secure the spot.

Re: Land Grab
Wed, June 11, 2008 - 9:05 PMSerg, that's really cool you are going to be working with us on the Doc Posse, that means 4 Staggers are on the list for early entry, plus hopefully the Plowman will get on with the DPW! Should be an interesting pre-event week, I can't wait to watch it all come together! Mots, no worries, your land grab recipe has been invaluable, you're going to be a big part of the land grab without even actually being there! Oh, and again, really nice work with the camp layout, it's going to be SO sweeeet...

Re: Land Grab
Sun, June 15, 2008 - 10:10 AMDue to these rumored and most possibly true factors--
There is one less street than last year.
The man is going to be farther from the Esplanade.
I am beginning to adjust our land grab strategy. What is happening it seems is that the city is being made bigger and by increasing the size of the Esplanade so the city will be expanding allot. This means that F street will be further out in distance than maybe what is optimal. Also the named streets will be longer from say 8:30 to 9:00. I think what all this might mean is that the theme camps and the places that we like to be near to are going to move a block in to the city due to the new space there.
In short what do you guys think about keeping everything the same but moving up to E street? -
-
This is the maximum depth. Additional responses will not be threaded.
Re: Land Grab
Sun, June 15, 2008 - 4:08 PME Street has a nice ring. And, in relation to where we were last year, I'd rather risk being a little closer than ending up a street farther out. I liked the energy. -
-
Re: Land Grab
Sun, June 15, 2008 - 8:30 PMI think "E" would be nice, maybe even "D" if we could get it .
But I think 8:45 should still be our target cross section. -
-
Re: Land Grab
Sun, June 15, 2008 - 10:01 PMYah thats the idea. We will know allot more when the map and theme camp placement comes out. I'm trying to stay ahead of the game.
