Music

topic posted Sun, April 13, 2008 - 4:16 PM by  Nikki
This thread is in response to Nathan's proposal to bring DJ equipment, though I'm sure there are plenty other matters that fall under a "music" heading to discuss here as well.

First thoughts on that topic, that I hope to hear from Mostky since he's our resident logistics guy...

Sunset spins sound absolutely lovely, since it's a time we all tend to eat, gather together and share drinks, get ready for the night time, get excited, etc. We had a resident DJ last year who was able to use the equipment next store a few times and spin at a couple other camps. If he makes it back, I'm sure he'd be thrilled to see someone spinning in camp.

That being said, I think it's important we keep camp a fairly quiet place in the bedtime hours... It's hard enough to sleep with the Deep End nearby as is...

Also, as we've opted not to stage any real public events, it's important that, if we have a music set up, it doesn't cause people to come trapsing through our personal spaces and our bar stash too frequently. This makes placement an important issues-- buried in the heart of stag or accessible to the street??? Our communal area is primarily a sit down, chill-out and talk affair, so I think it'd be best to have a separate area, wherever we place it, for your equipment and for dancing. That guarantees that people who want to talk can hear each other and that people who want to dance can do so without tripping over lawn chairs and camo netting...

So, absolutely, that sounds like a wonderful contribution to our family home. I've never heard a stagger say no to anything that could be done safely, respectfully, and self-sufficiently. Get talking with Motsky about your footprint and how your space needs might interact with the layout of the camp, and I'm sure we can get something going!!!

Welcome aboard! Love your enthusiasm!

thanks, i definately don't want to spin at night, im out and about then. just thought it would be fun. definately don't want to bug anyone, i know there are people who hate the boom boom. my speakers aren't very loud and i just want to have the experience of spinning at sunset on the playa.

      Nathan and Nikki,
I've actually been thinking of a camp layout that could accommodate this. I was thinking that we might need two shade spots one more toward the center of camp that would be the chill place with bountifull shade lawn chairs and most likely the bar as it would be more secure. The second shade would be near or right on the street and that would be the PARTY space for music precussion and general amped up mayhem. It would also host a sunset mix of perfection that would make the Ibiza crowd melt in appreciation. This fits in perfectly for my master plan that resides only in my head now. This would not be an inherently secure area so all equipment that has value might have to be moved in and out of place as necessary. I am totally down with low volume but still groveable levels and I will bring my records if I can pretty please play for a little bit.

By the way I can't log in to eplaya anymore no matter what I try so for now Tribe is it for me.

I say music is cool with me as well and I like the idea of a chill zone and a party zone in the camp... will be interesting for sure... hey might give danny a place to make his bar that he was talking about last year.... that sucks about you not being able to log into e-playa... oh and hey as for the bike Mots yeah it is dead not only the derailer mount but it took out a larg chunk of the wheel mount as well no way to weld it would be to weak.... so I am stripping it down keeping what i can and then going to buy a new frame.... :( at least it is $300 cheaper then a new bike but it still $300 over all so :(

of course you can spin, anyone within reason from the camp is welcome to spin records. Just not in a dust storm. I plan on keeping the tables locked up unless they are being used. glad that there are other djs in the camp

          Hey Family,
Your idea of a quiet,in-camp,space that will be a little more private, and a party place sounds juuusst right! ha ha You guys are so awesome, i can't wait to get home. i am not a welder, architect,or d.j., but, sister and i are willing to do whatever to make our camp a home! i have my man on alert for any carpets he can get from jobsites he works on, and sister and I are thinking of something like a kiddie pool filled with big cushions, we could put in the chill area, we even talked about putting the "old fashioned" type water bottles filled with ice in amongst the cushions during the day...cool nap! If this sounds o.k. let us know! Also, since we want to save on the 5th wheel awning, we bought an easy-up 10x10 to set just outside the r.v. and we will have a big circle shaped chaise lounge chair under it!! I see a toe nail painting party with cool drinks and treats!!
          much love

I think music is a great idea. Last year alot of people talked about bringing some sort of music to camp. So much so that everyone thought everyone else was bringing it and we had none. Kind of like the shower setups. Thank you Mots, for bailing some of us out on the shower thing.

You know what is awsome.. Masson Jars... I love them so much lol i just figure out how to make soup in a masson jar... now if i can figure out a way to freeze it without breaking the glass i will be set... cause then i can bring soup to the playa in jars and just put the jar in hot water and poof.... instant soup... it is very cool and then when i am done using it for storing stuff i can use it as a drinking cup :)

Motsky master plans that exist only in his head are the best. Knew he'd have some idea for a balanced layout!!! Oh, Stag 2.0, already big enough to need two chill spaces... ;) Can't wait to hear what ya bring, Nathan.

                  Nathan,
What are you thinking of bringing for a power source?
My generator is going to be tied up on the Space Yacht but could serve as a back up when the Yacht is in camp.
I can't wait to demonstrate my limited skill on the turn tables!!!!

                  Nik,
                  Thanks!
All the knowledge I have gained in this sometimes frustrating life is perfectly suited to Burning Man and it is by far the most rewarding thing I have to work on. For the love of the Burn, our camp and my fellow human I power forward. I just had to say that. ...I'm feeling quite pumped up now!

its a 6.5 horse power genny i just got with my student loans. not sure of the wattage can't find the manual right now had a house party this weekend and the house is in a terrible state. i'll find out. the thing i could use is another set of speakers. I have one set that are fairly good. but in the event of a prob. could use a backup. the genny should be big enough. and claims to be quiet and eco friendly? don't know hoe true that is but will know after memorial day weekend as we are taking it out to the mountains to party. can;t wait to hear you tunes

                      04/15
6.5 HP should be more than adequate. If it is one of the quiet honda ones then yes it is an awesome generator.
I only have small home hi fi style speakers. I can bring them if you would like me to. I have my mixer plumbed in to them now through a unreliable yamaha amp. I could also bring my DJ stuff but it is really low end. I should have bought the good stuff when I had the chance.

                        04/15
not necessary. my speakers are fairly big we could rock a small dance floor. I have a small sub for my surround, the genny is great it can power some lights as well do we need carpet for the dancing? probably don't want too much dust on the equipment. hehe know the will be a ton anyway. Im getting a reverse blower thingy that will help. i only hope i can get a uhaul hook up thingy to fit my car so i won't have problems otherwise i might need help with a table. i think i can fit all the rest in my car, if i go by myself. will be tough over the mountains from denver to home

Joe- sister has a great mason jar soup recipe. It is all dry ingrediants and then you add water and heat it up. I like the frozen idea, just be careful of fast changing temps, I have broken a few jars in the canner doing just that!

                Well hot damn.

I have some lights strands that pick up bass currents in music and alternate accordingly. Pretty cool, especially when intoxicated. I'll see if I can't dig those up.

I'm a bit late to this thread, but I've been dj'ing downtempo and jazz for years now. Obviously if I brought my vynl I'd end up with a black, solid puddle of heartbreak, but if someone brings cd tables I'd be happy to burn some great tracks and spin em.
    • Re: Music

      05/10
my vinyl was fine the last time it just has to not be stored in direct sunlight. should be fine got to avoid the dust though. i kept mine in the crate, and in a garbage bag. no warpage or melting. everybody brings their vinyl take my word for it or contact some other non-virgin djs. don't blame me if anythignhappens though bm is at your own risk, says so on your ticket. hehehe...

Assuming that I will be coming by vehicle other nthan motorcycle, I will be bringing a full complement of percussion equipment, some mics and cables, and in all probability an M Audio Ozonic interface. it would be fantastic if we could somehow manage to mix live percussion with spun stuff on the fly.
        • Tim posted, on Wednesday, May 21:

So i know we have at least a few folks looking to DJ this year, myself being one of them. Im wondering what sort of equipment everyone was planning on bringing, maybe we can save someone space by only bringing 1 PA system, etc. What kind of gear do you use and what will you be bringing with you?

I currently have 2 numark tt1625 turntables, a hercules dj console/sound card and a gemini mixer (not sure what model)...not the best top of the line equipment, but it does what i need it to do right now! I also use a laptop loaded with 17000+ songs, & with Sony Acid Pro 6, fruityloops & virtual DJ, & generally use virtual vinyl & recording software to make my mixes. right now im looking for a decent PA, but I could have one by the time August rolls around. I also have a few tube blacklights, strobe light, and other assorted x-mas type lights for effects. i have an amazing dj booth, but its a heavy black marble topped bar and probably will not be coming down with me :-(

          Nathan replied, the same day:

im bringing my tech 12s and a good mixer, it however does not have leds for the levels on each channel, just for the master, so you have to use your ears to hear where the level of the record you r bringing in is through the monitors. i don't have a pa, just an amp and some fairly good speakers which i was planning on using as both monitors and a pa. if you get better ones that would be cool. we however are not a sound camp, and can't crank it all night long. everyone in our camp is welcome to spin. i however have some concern over the safety of my equipment and will have to keep it under lock and key when im not there. we are not going to be spinning all night, i was planning on some sunset sets, maybe a few daytime ones, and basically play it by ear. we will have to make sure we aren't bothering any neighbors, etc. i also have a big fold up table that should be good for a comp etc. you should be really careful with the comp as playa dust can get in every nook and cranny. i also have a great genny which will power any lights etc, which i don't have any of. so it would be great to give us some atmosphere.

          Motskyroonmatick chimed in:

I'll be bringing some records to spin and could bring a spare basic mixer if necessary. I have turntables but they are so bad that they are not worth bringing. I will definitely be bringing my mini beat counter as it is the only way I have any chance at beat matching. I'll bring my techno/dance, multi decade pop and some rarities that I like. I'm terribly out of practice so please don't kill this DJ. I'm looking forward to this and thanks in advance for letting me spin on your gear!

Lonestoner added, on Thursday, May 22:

I'll be bringing some good tunes, Klaus Waldeck and Parov Stelar are two of my current favorites. I'll try to get my hands on a strobe light and/or maybe a smoke or bubble machine.

angryeunuch posted, on Monday, May 26:

Records seem like a pretty bad idea in 100+ heat. I lost an entire crate of my best vinyl by leaving it in the backseat of a car. If you've got a plan to keep em' cool though, go for it. I've been spinning for years, though only in the last year with cd tables. I don't own any, but I like em, and they're easy to use. That's probably the best option for the burn.

          Nathan added, later that day:

again, ive brought records every time, if you keep them out of the direct sunlight, and out of a car they are fine.more worried about dust.

            Chiefdanfox advised:

"'ll be playing bass with another camp, meaning I am bringing a bass, but no amp. It is very possible that my boyfriend can bring his PA system. It's a 1500 watt 16 channel Mackie Onyx, and 2 15" yamaha club speakers. (the speakers are less likely than the PA system)

Mackie.... oh.god I need a cold shower. Mackie rules. Official confirmation- while I do not have the means to complete my art-car project, I will for certain bring all my drums and a bunch of other purcussion equipment.

        • Re: Music

          07/28
I have to think that will shorten the life of that Mackie pretty rapidly. What about just getting one of those super cheap Behringer boards, like the eurorack ub502? It is about $30 (at MF), and doesn't have sliders, one mic input, and two line inputs + a tape input. Just a thought. Mackies are really nice, but unless you can keep it sealed most of the time, I have to think the dust is going to be a killer down the road, and it would probably cost you more to have it serviced than the cost of that Behringer. I have used some behringer boards, and they would be totally adequate. Of course I am assuming your speakers are active.
