I'm heading to the playa on the 8/19!!! Early access baby! This is a whole new world of radical self-reliance... being on playa without Opie??? And, honestly, I'd rather have other Staggers there than not...

So, for a million reasons-- the most important of which, of course, is giving back to the community-- get your butts signing up for volunteer groups and get your booties out there early! Two burns in one!!!

Can't wait to return home to Stag Camp; spent the better part of the weekend dreaming, costuming, and missing you all, old friends and new. I'm finishing up (in June!!!) a long delayed degree in English. I began at Tulane and hold a deep love for New Orleans, spent two interim years living on an olive farm in Israel and then working at a Chicago law firm, and now I'm finishing at DePaul. Within weeks (or possibly days) after this burn, I'm departing with the Peace Corps, most likely for Morocco.

My horoscope in "The Onion" this week was: "After months of backbreaking effort, you'll finally finish your first novel. Now, imagine how difficult it'd be to actually write one." That being said, it is my greatest aspiration.

I have printed out at least 200 pages of good info as I find it - then keep it around the house to read as I have spare time. The idea of the survival pack type thing that you carry everywhere got me wondering...

So I had this idea. I was thinking about working with some of the other graphic designers here to create a card kind of thing that would include a Stag Camp logo, and then blank spaces to fill in our playa address (because we're not positive that land grab gets us to 8:45 between E and F or thereabouts), and our default world address info. I can get these printed in advance and bring them with me. If someone else could bring a small laminator - then we could have Stag Camp hang tags for our CamelBak/daypack. Also the concept of clipping one to your person that says - if you find me in a bad way - help me stagger back to Stag Camp - or something like that.

So, we're getting close to go time, tribe is always slow around the burn, and a lot of us are going to try to be gleaning important information from these threads--and from portable devices with unreliable internet connections--as we get on the road. It's really kind of important for usability that we keep this thing for total entropy. If people could post discussions under the appropriate thread, I think that'd help everyone get around the site better. ESPECIALLY, in David's "Roll Call" thread, which he is going to be using to do a lot of math that will determine how much land we grab. Let's make things easy on him.

I feel like, since Emily made the Hitler joke, an internet Nazi, and I don't want to stifle anyone's posting creativity. I really hate deleting and moving posts, but I'm trying for a delicate balance here between keeping our tribe functional and being freeflowing. I'm sorry if I've irritated anyone. I promise that if you put jokes, asides, and shorter questions in general discussion, or another appropriate thread, people will still read them.

Again, thanks and apologies. I've even irritated myself.

Stag Camp 2.0 is planning to build an art project to be part of the Temple of Community's installation.

Here is the challenge from Sacramento Valley Burners tribe and some of us have already been communicating with )'(Skirblah)'( and Gothalot.

Hello fellow Theme Camp organizers (and others).

The Rue Morgue and Temple of Community would like to offer you a challenge of a different ilk. Some of your crew may already be on this project but we'd like to see a represented piece from your camp.

When we found out that Best wasn't doing a temple this year we started to embark on creating one for the community that each camp could be part of.

We are building a 20 - 30 foot origami crane from wood to burn. It will a place of mourning, deep thought and release. To say goodbye to loved ones that have left this world.

We are asking various camps to build their own 5 foot version that can be placed next to the main structure in a circle to show that no mater how different we are together we are a community.

We will be happy to send you scaled down drawings but in the end its your art piece and we'd like you to make it yours. Use the skeleton as a base.

If you are interested in this challenge please contact me or Gothalot.

THIS OFFER IS OPEN TO UNREGISTERED AS WELL AS REGISTERED THEME CAMPS.

FOR Temple of Community INFO or to JOIN us go to: tribes.tribe.net/templeofcommunity

We also need financial donations to make it happen!

Thank you for your continued support.

As a service to those persons interested in joining the stag camp family, and would like to know what Stag is about and the general guidelines of being a "stagger" this post is for you. A brief history- Stag camp was originally founded by a small group of core members, (Mots,Steve,Plowman, Somnivore and others) who were attending BM in '07 with no affiliation to a theme camp, mainly coming solo, and wanted other people to set up camp with and still be able to remain autonimous at BM and still have other people to socialize with, and look out for each other at BM. On E-Playa, the Stag family blossomed to around 50 people who were also flying solo, many of which were first time burners and enjoyed the prospect of being in the company of other solo campers who were seasoned BM vets to support a basic camp support network. The camp was an incredible sucess and formed lifelong bonds within the Stag family and is projected to nearly double in size this year. The great sucess of Stag Camp can mainly be attributed to the ideals and phiosphys of it's founding fathers (..and mothers) that will, and must, be embraced by all Stag brothers and sisters for '08. Again, this is mainly meant to paint a picture of what you can expect around Stag camp and from the people within it, as well as what is expected of you. So- Here than are some guidelines-... 1- Absolutely no violence of any kind will be tolerated at Stag. We are a family, and even if your goofy uncle annoys you, you do not use violence twards that uncle..( I am being metaphorical here, but you get the picture..) 2- Absolutely no type of harrasment will be tolerated at Stag camp. Stag was 50% female last year, and part of all people feeling comfortable was that we show due respect to the opposite sex as well as each other at Stag. We are brothers and sisters first, husbands, wives, lovers and partners an extremely distant second. 3- Respect each others personal space. We all co-exist at Stag in a small space, and though someones space may look inviting, that does not mean you are invited into it. We will have our "public" chill spaces for all of us where we can enjoy each others company, but we don't pop into some one elses tent unannnounced. 4- All Staggers are entiteled to complete autonomy. No one is under any obligatin to join in any event, discussion, outing, or the like. We all come and go as we please. 5- Watch out for your family. As a basic philosophy Staggers look out for each other on the playa as well as camp. This means when some brutal sand storm rapes camp and you are caught out on the playa, don't worry your family will make sure you stuff doesn't get blown away, but by the same token if the same event occours and you are in camp it's your duty to your family to pitch in and help batten down the hatches. 6- Staggers are self reliant. No camp member is required to provide food, supplies or shelter to any other camp member, though it is extremely common, and all Staggers should arrive with whatever they need for the harsh envionment unless other arrangements have been made. 7- Common area's are common responsibility. If you use a common kitchen, clean up after your self unless you are bringing your mom solely for this purpose. 8- Be considerate to your other camp brothers and sisters at all times. Yes, we all at one time or another will stagger (..no pun intended) into camp at 3a.m. to resupply and go back out till sunrise, but just assume someone is sleeping and be considerate in this and all other applicable situations. 9- Be prepared to be open and honest. Part of what makes Stag such an incredible group of people to be among is that we all are approachable by the rest of the flock so expect to slide your doors of communication wide open. These are just the basics of Stag Philosophy. Hold them close to your heart, and they will serve you well. WELCOME TO THE BEST CAMP ON THE PLAYA!!!

Redwood Resurrection:
A Corrective Ritual Sky-Art Performance Sculpture
Burning Man 2008
Wednesday 6pm to Sunset
The “American dream” has been fueled by many things, one being the destruction of old growth
forest ecosystems across the US. Only about 5% remains. With the notion that the reason it is called
the American dream is that one has to be asleep to buy it, we will be doing a corrective ritual of
waking up, in this case, literally calling back to life the destroyed forest.
Mass Enactment: With 1000 people or so, we will be creating a life-size redwood tree about 200 ft
tall. It will be stretched out across the ground and formed by human bodies. In the trunk of the tree
people will be naked. For the branches, folks will be clothed. About 200 people will outline the
entire tree wearing dark colored clothing. The tree will be ritually cut by a man with a real chainsaw
(minus the chain . . so no worries!) It will “fall” to the “ground” leaving only the stump and roots as
is. After lying smashed on the playa for a minute or so, several musicians will rise from the
branches with instruments and play along with the enchanting music coming from the sound car
near the crane at the base of the tree. The beautiful music and a couple of fire dancers will lead the
rise back upwards of the tree back to it’s original position. After holding the shape for a minute
everyone, will begin dancing to the song Redwood Tree by Van Morrison and another more tribal
style tune as 32 fire dancers dance a descending ring around the tree from top to bottom and back up
again. From beginning to end we will all hold the thought that what we are doing is powerful, that
the trees of the world will somehow be empowered by this performance and that the American
people are now waking up from the dream that has held them spellbound and caused so much
destruction.
Sky Captains Guide the Fall and Rise: We need about 50 sky captains who will lead the fall and
the rise back upwards of the tree. They will form the borders or “container” of the entire tree. The
sky captains will be responsible for a particular 10 ft. section of the tree and for two people on each
side of them whom they will instruct about the procedure. Since the top of the tree, in its fall and
rise back up, will be moving a lot faster than the bottom of the tree, it will be really important for
everyone to try to hold the shape of the original tree together. This will be a fun challenge and will
look wonderful from above in film, no matter how “perfect” it works. Perfection is NOT the goal
here. Once it falls to “ground level” which will be marked with flags, it will pause for a minute or
so and then, after musicians play for a minute, a signal will be given to rise, and the other side of the
tree will lead the resurrection upwards. The whole process of standing beautiful, falling and
resurrection will take about 10 minutes.
So far we have about 15 sky captains. I am hoping that some of you can recruit your friends or
camp mates that are leader types . . . AND . . . four others as well to be at your side forming the
border of the tree. No worries if you can’t . . . we have lots of time and I am sure others will show
up as this thing builds and gathers momentum. All Sky Captains and the two on each side of them
should wear dark colored clothing as they will be the border of the tree.
Fire Dancers: We need 32 competent fire dancers and from this group, two who feel they can lead
the movement that will happen, and train the others in it. A very key element of this whole thing
will be the magic circle of light that will begin to hover “over” the crown of the tree, and then
descend to the bottom and back up again. From above, it will look like a ring of light like or halo
will appear above of the tree. When it moves down to the actual top of the tree, the oval-like circle
of dancers will split in two, and each group of 16 will maintain their half of the oval, ring shape and
move, in tangent with the oval circle of dancers on the other side of the tree, to the bottom . . . . and
then reverse the whole process back to the top and above. The event will end when they are back
where they started. The fire dancers should rehearse this movement before hand as this is going to
be an especially beautiful and powerful part of the whole event!! I am hoping that two of you in this
group will offer to be the leaders and choreographers of this event.
Musicians: My assistant on this whole event is Kris Deelane who is lead singer and musician in the
band SweetJuice in Portland and in training to lead Art For the Sky programs. She will be working
on this part and we will have more info later on the actual music. Basically, a hand full of musicians
will rise from the branches of the tree playing along with some music coming from the sound car.
We have one trumpet player, who has agreed to also wield the chainsaw (love the metaphor!), and
he may have an appropriate “rise to the call” trumpet tune in mind to begin the tree’s resurrection
after it’s fall. The musicians will meet the morning of the event to rehearse the tune they will play.
WE NEED A POWERFUL SOUND CAR! If you know of one who like to participate, please have
them contact me.
Film: The entire event will be filmed from atop a 110 ft crane. I will be up there along with another
cameraman who is a part of a team doing a special Burning Man Documentary shot in super high
resolution format similar to IMAX. My short film will be put up on youtube as a tribute to old
growth forests and the transformation of the so-called American dream.
Directions: We will have a sky captains meeting the morning of the event at a time and location
that will be announced. Other than the fire dancers and musicians, there will not be any rehearsals.
The Sky Captains will be on site at 6:00 PM to help place people when they arrive. The shape of the
tree will be lined and flagged out on the playa. I will be in the crane, hovering low over the site with
a megaphone directing traffic somewhat. Each Sky Captain will be responsible for about 10 ft of the
border of the tree. If everyone does their part, the whole thing will come together a lot easier than
you can imagine. (a bit of a metaphor about the power we have if we work together and each do our
share!). Basically, with the sky captains being the containing border of the tree, the mass of people
“inside” forming the heart of the design, need know nothing other than to follow the borders of the
tree as it falls and rises (the most stoned will not screw things up a bit . . . but Sky Captains, please
be totally coherent! Please distribute this document to all your friends and campmates that you think
will want to participate. The more that know the details the better.
Location: 800 feet from the 2:00 edge, between streets e and f. You will see the crane . . . .

Who knew unincorporated camps were... <deep breath> "less than." (Wet Hot American Summer reference, anyone?) I know we have a bunch of people working random shifts at various places and thought this might be a good place to post general volunteer stuff up. That way anyone enterprising might write it down, if they feel compelled to visit. I'll certainly print this out and bring it to the playa...

I know Serg has a few shifts scheduled with the ARTerty during the event, and Lonestoner at the Cafe. Joe and a few others were talking about the airport, etc. Will you post up your scheduled shifts, guys?

I'll be at the Center Camp Cafe from 11am to 3pm on Wednesday and Thursday...

Also, Red had posted in the "Greeter Shift" thread the following information that I don't want to lose, so I'm reposting it here. It's a really valuable way to help the city...
I had the great pleasure to meet, do some volunteer work for, and party with Robbi Dobbs, who oversees the porta pottie collective of volunteers including our own Motski. She is in need of Porta Pottie Patrol volunteers during the event to restock TP and other miscellaneous duties. I told her our camp is chock full of eager volunteers and would pass on the information. She needs your body and soul for a 4 hour shift and in exchange will feed you and provide you with a special t-shirt. I helped her with making the t-shirt stencils that reminds peeps about the baby wipe issue. If you are interested in volunteering for this necessary and worthy while cause, here's what Robbi wrote today for me to share.
Hi Red,
Thank you for all your help and getting back to me. The best way to send volunteers my way is for them to post on the ePlaya message board (Get Involved >> All About Participating in the Pottie Project). We'll work out the details from there.

Thanks again,

This thread is in response to Nathan's proposal to bring DJ equipment, though I'm sure there are plenty other matters that fall under a "music" heading to discuss here as well.

First thoughts on that topic, that I hope to hear from Mostky since he's our resident logistics guy...

Sunset spins sound absolutely lovely, since it's a time we all tend to eat, gather together and share drinks, get ready for the night time, get excited, etc. We had a resident DJ last year who was able to use the equipment next store a few times and spin at a couple other camps. If he makes it back, I'm sure he'd be thrilled to see someone spinning in camp.

That being said, I think it's important we keep camp a fairly quiet place in the bedtime hours... It's hard enough to sleep with the Deep End nearby as is...

Also, as we've opted not to stage any real public events, it's important that, if we have a music set up, it doesn't cause people to come trapsing through our personal spaces and our bar stash too frequently. This makes placement an important issues-- buried in the heart of stag or accessible to the street??? Our communal area is primarily a sit down, chill-out and talk affair, so I think it'd be best to have a separate area, wherever we place it, for your equipment and for dancing. That guarantees that people who want to talk can hear each other and that people who want to dance can do so without tripping over lawn chairs and camo netting...

So, absolutely, that sounds like a wonderful contribution to our family home. I've never heard a stagger say no to anything that could be done safely, respectfully, and self-sufficiently. Get talking with Motsky about your footprint and how your space needs might interact with the layout of the camp, and I'm sure we can get something going!!!

Welcome aboard! Love your enthusiasm!

Hello all,
I would like to give one admission ticket to Burning Man 2008, The American Dream to anyone who would be willing to supply me with some equipment during BM. I will be flying into SF from Ottawa Canada and driving a van out from there so won’t be able to bring much from home. I’d like to use a stove and/or BBQ, cooking pots and pans and utensils, a stable shade structure to cover two small tents, some seating (for two), maybe some coolers if I can meet you in SF before hand to fill them… Don’t know if all that is too much to ask for… let me know what you think… I’d like to make very firm plans with someone ‘cause I can’t afford to arrive without this stuff. If this can’t workout, I’ll simply sell the ticket and buy the equipment I need in SF then try to sell it off in SF before I fly out.

Fat SAM wrote on June 25, 2007:

"How many folks are going stag this year? My girlfriend and I had a tough time of it last year together because we had such different notions about what we wanted to do at the Burn that we decided to go seperately this year. I've never gone alone and I really enjoy camping with people, but I like the idea of being self-reliant, too, and not having to participate in anything formal. Sometimes it's just nice to know that you can go back to your camp and sit down with people that you've gotten familiar with rather than eating your corned beef hash and granola bar all alone.

Is there anyone out there who'd like to collaborate on a group camp of stag folks? Men, women, gay, straight, smokers, drinkers, tolerant nons, breakfast makers, dinner makers, artists...anybody whose camp fell through or who is just going alone but would still like company...It's not a registered theme camp, so much, as I figure that's all done with but maybe just a group of people who'd like to meet up and camp together."

Plowman responded, almost immediately:

"A loose knit camp? One where everyone just hangs out when they are not doing their own thing? One where everyone puts their shade together in the middle for communal comfort and socialization? A camp that is all togther and individual at the same time? A camp where you don't miss breakfast, lunch, or dinner because you were'nt back in time? A camp where you bring your own food and cook, or not, and eat, or not, when you want? A camp where everyone is welcome? A camp that will help and assist anyone in camp who needs it?A camp where you can meet new friends? A camp where, if you are straight, gay, lesbian, bi, or whatever, it doesn't matter? Because everyone has a right to be who they want to be?
If thats what you are looking for then I'm in!!!!!
But it doesn't sound like Stag camp to me..... more like "UPHORIA"!!"

And the rest was history.

Stag Camp 2.0 will be back in action on the playa in 2008, based on the same premises and the same three rules: no violence, no theft, and no moop.

Mr. David Opie relayed to me the idea of a Stag 2.0 tribe over rum and cokes and reminiscences. This allows us to clean up our threads a bit, avoiding the confusion of so many '07 posts without having to delete them. Especially in the "Introduce Yourself" section, an '08 thread will provide a better picture of who'll be with us, as well as a more accurate head count. And, for those of us returning staggers, it allows us to reintroduce ourselves. Hell, people change in a year!

I will start an '08 "Introduce Yourself" thread. But, beyond that, we should stick, for the time being, to eplaya, as much as possible. (Also Mr. Opie's sound advice: If we keep a hyperactive thread on eplaya, we'll attract even more of our wonderful newbies.) When the time gets closer to seriously plan, tribe will play a greater role.

Until then, once again, much love and welcome home!
