Shrewsbury meal partaking?

Please sign up for meals you plan on eating at Shrewsbury so the cooks know how much to prepare.
Plan on $5.00 per meal and the cooks can let you know if they're cheaper.
Please be specific in your reply (e.g.: all, Saturday dinner only...)
If you sign up be prepared to pay the cook even if you don't eat - after all they bought & prepared a portion for you.

Menu:

Friday dinner - Mulligawtany
Saturday breakfast -
Saturday dinner (I think Becky mentioned chicken soup? Becks?)
Sunday dinner -

Lunch is on your own either in the guildyard or purchased

I think the cookie bake-off will cover desserts :)

I just copied this from the Renaissance Faires NW tribe:

The Avery Renaissance Festival today announced it will debut on October 4th & 5th, 2008 at Avery Township, near Shelton and Olympia, WA.
Hours are Saturday and Sunday, 10am – 6pm. Afterwards, on both days, from 6pm to 8pm, there will be a family-oriented “Concert on the Green” where guests can sit down and have hamburgers and hotdogs while enjoying a range of entertainment.

Car Pools...

I wasn't sure what post amounted to the most current updates to Shrew plans, so I'm making a new one devoted to transporting our sorry carcasses down there... and our not-so-sorry carcasses in the case of our fairer comrades. As for my carcass... 'tis pretty sorry at the moment, alas.

(We'll see if Tribe crashes again before anyone can read this, LOL, the things we put up with)

Daf and I went through some more annoying, frustrating - though ultimately fulfilling - car shenanigans this weekend, got stranded, rescued and ultimately procured a new vehicle (or perhaps it is a bumblebee... the jury is still out) which can haul all that we will need to haul to Shrew.

It doesn't have a name yet, but it's Babe's successor... It seats four (the handbook says five if they're small and good friends) and if it's just Kris & I, would fit the wheelbarrow if anyone wants me to bring it. If we don't bring the barrow, we can fit two more Rennies plus their stuff into the back (plus the roofrack if we need to...) in fact we might be able to tuck a few more people and the barrow in there, I haven't tried yet.

So, anyway, does anyone want I should bring the wheelbarrow?
Anyone want to carpool on this commute? Save gas? Etcetera?
We're planning to leave Friday, probably morning to midday (so we can hit the fabric stores in Portland)

Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Foodwise: We will be driving out Friday but don't know how long it will take us to get there, especially if we are picking up passengers or shopping.. So I guess put us down for chipping in money for Saturday breakfast and supper ("we" (aka Calabash) luncheon at the venison sausage vendor... mmmm) and then we usually escape Sunday after the faire closes to make it back for Monday work so Sunday breakfast too.

I just got a confirmation e-mail today about a 13'x10' Tent! Brion fessed up to ordering it for me to have for Shrews =D

So Mel, I hope it doesn't screw up the tenttetris too much, but my tent size is now 13'x10' (With a 6' center! Now I can stand up when I dress!)

After Hours Show
At 7:30-ish (depending upon dark, and gathered strength), an open stage will be available for you to demonstrate your
talents. Come sing, dance, make merry. Your act need not period, just fun for all. Please limit your performance to
5 minutes or less. Sign up during Friday and Saturday at the Main Stage. Other surprises await. Enjoy an evening of delight.

Shrewsbury Renaissance Faire has contracted with the Benton County Sheriff's Department to provide on-site officers during the preparation and operation dates of the Faire. Say hi to the Officers and thank them for thier assistance.

Quiet Time is 10pm - for those who actually like to sleep

Phil informs me that new stage awnings are prepared and that show watching will be even more comfortable this year. Also, the Pie-Powder Court will be back with us this year, presided over by the Lord Mayor of Shrewsbury. Stop by and see justice (or something vaguely like it) done!

Shrewsbury - we've been officially accepted

Jay & I got the official acceptance letter for Shrews.

We will be listed as Hearth of St. Brigids/Pleasant Pastymes

Just a note in case people didn't read the rules of play - Shrews doesn't allow pets.

We've also received permission to hawk the lord of misrule badges for donations. Lord of Misrule badges were sold by the youths of the village in period to collect money for village festivals. Something like the folk life buttons they sell today. I printed paper badges with Lord of Misrule and Mistress of Mayhem. We can cut them out and sell for donations. They can be attached with a safety pin. All donations will be used to buy more supplies for future giveaways. I'll have them at the guildyard, anyone can sell if they'd like to.

from the info sheet:

the Barley Mow Inn is for gatelisted participants and is a rest & play area

the Buttery is a participant off-stage area in the Barley Mow, free snacks & drinks available

Every is welcome to join the opening and closing parade

Saturday Night after hours show - at dusk on the Main stage - music and betime stories. "Bring some coin to reward our gracious Players."
Family Friendly acts

Songs of Trade

I don't know if any of you have songs for your trade/ you use when hawking, but my former guild at Shrews encouraged such ideas. I never could think of a song - especially since Emily became the strumpet of the shire, but I was going through and learning some songs online, when a Strumpeting song/verse popped into my head: (keep in mind that the first verse is tailored to Shrews)

Down at the Shrew and Thistle, Let me hear you whistle
Pay me a penny for a roll in the hay
Now whil your wife is praying, I'm the one you're laying
England's Forever, But Scotland's Depraved

*smirk* I find it amusing, any thoughts? Or anyone else wish to share their song?

Group camping plans for Sept. 26-27, 2008

Scenic Beach group camping area is currently open the weekend of Sept. 26-27. Their picnic shelter is on a first come first served basic, so if some of us elect to camp we'd be there first thing in the morning to claim it.

Group camping accomodates up to 56 people and is $132.72 per night with the $7.00 reservation fee.

We could split the cost per person, per tent, per family unit - whatever we decide.

Anyone want to commit to the weekend. I'll put it on my credit card if enough of us commit to share the cost.

We could do Friday night only, if people want to and then clear camp and spend the rest of the Saturday in the day use area
or we could camp both nights.

Once we have a core of St. Brigids-P/P et al, we can open it to other guilds for camping to help split costs.

I figured the picnic feast would be opened PAD wide.

If we want to actually do this - I will need to make reservations soon or we may lose the group camp area. (Manchester was already booked for this weekend.)

Any firm takers????

From Amy...

"So, yes! Ron said tonight that for sure there is a second weekend camp-out sort of thing on the site at Belfair. There will be extra port-a-potties and such, bringing a small donation would be nice. Water is VERY limited, please bring your own. There will be a BBQ for those interested, if you want to partake, just bring something to share. Or, take care of food on your own. Be in costume if you want, or not, it's mainly just a social thing. Go ahead and forward this to any WRFF participants that you think would be interested in attending. :)

Cheers,
Amy"

Amilynn's Carpool

I'm unsure of how things will pann out, but another Family issue is on the rise again. My mother might have to have surgery during the week right before Shrews, so I most likely will be coming down top Gaston for that to take care of her, then leave around noon when my Dad gets home from work. The part I feel terrible about is the ride for Amilynn - there's a good chance I won't be a good carpool candidate. Can she carpool with anyone one of you?

Please don't think my irresponsible - I love Faire, and usually go out of my way to do stuff for it and with my guild. But this year has delt me some nasty cards on the side of my family. Next year should go smoother for me.

Manchester Group Camping Area fees

Okay breakdown of prices for group camping area at Manchester:

1-50 people - $121.66 per night
51-75 $181.66 per night
76-100 $242.21 per night
101-125 $202.77 per night
126-130 $363.32 per night

at 25 paying people it would be less than $5.00 per person per night, 20 people would be about 6.10 and 15 would be 8.12

The Torpedo bldg picnic shelter would be an additional $184.00 for the day, at 20 paying people that would be and additonal 9.20 per person (and we could work this out per family depending on the numbers.)

So for a two night stay with picnic area with 20 people it would be $21.40 per person.

Unfortuately they are not available (or there is something else planned) the first three weekends of August.

We could plan other weekend, but I need to know who's really interested which means you would pre-pay me before I put it on my credit card (its basically unrefundable). Also we would not have to reserve the picnic shelter - we could set up pavilions in the picnic area and still play in the public area. Or we could just reserve the picnic area and not camp.

I also need your weekend availability from last August weekend through early Oct? What say you?

This can be PAD wide, but I want to gage my two guild interest first.

Don't Miss/Forget @ Shrews

As I staed in Mels thread, don't forget sunscreen and drink plenty of water/lemonade and eat pickles & pretzels. In doing the eating and ddrinking, definately check out the Barley Bowl - not hard to miss the big ole signs that say "participants only", it gives you a chance to refresh and relax out of the public eye. =) I recomend the jousts (duh!) I'm not sure if they have the Knights of Avalon or the Seattle Knights. There are also three stages on the green, they have amusing shows. Ig you spot the dear Gaffer Applewright, ask him how he cuts an apple. Gaffer is hard to miss; looks like father christmas with one hell of a personalility, also, his staff has an apple atop of it. If you are of age, check out the Shrew and Thistle (alegarden) located next door to mainstage. The Reeves always have fun goings on in their guildyard, as does another guildyard, I forgot their name, but usually are next to the path to the wedding bower. Ummmmm Dragons Breath ale is great to try - they serve root and cream "ale", orange cream, and sasparilla (sp?) They allow you to refil your purchased bottle (still use mine from 9 years ago) as well as your tankard for a few dollars (not sure the current price) Ask the villiage idiot for an insult, they are quite funny. The revelers (my old guild) run a games booth. And ofcourse Lord Chamberlin's guildyard is always nice for a rest (I LOVE MARY AND STEVE!)

AFTERHOURS there is a show on mainstage, I also tend to wander around as well with beverage in hand. I've spent a time or two in the Coon'A'Noon campsite - is you make it there, ask if there are any Cherry Bombs *giggles*I've heard stories about their maze game sunday night, involving the ruin castle maze in the dark, a fifth of some specific bottle of alcohol, and a game of tag.

I don't recomend leaving the site when it's dark, or even driving KV Highway at night - it's really bad for deer. I hit one in '05, or rather its hoof hit my tire and ditched my car =( I do recommend waving to the video camera when the nosey neighbors are filming at the top of the road.

and

DON'T FORGET TO PLAY FAIRE!

revised gatelist:

Mel
Jay
Scott
Kristin
Charles
Marissa
Michael
Barb
Jillana
Mark
Kelsey
Becky
Ahna (Emily)
Ezra
Amy

Jane sent regrets, Alex/Marisa have theatre tickets (have fun guys), I checked with Guy and he is unavailable that weekend.

I will bring Mulligatawny for Friday Dinner (no msg:)
Becky is taking Saturday Dinner & a breakfast
Barb is cooking a breakfast

Jay & I will bring Kamp Kitchen & guild pavilion & shade
Scott/Kristin will bring back wall or tell us we need to get it to someone else to get it down there

No one asked for any special props - though I assume Mike will want Flossie and will try to stuff her in - besides she's become our unofficial mascot.

Jay and I hope to be onsite by 1:00 p.m. Friday

Jay and I will be filling out the Shrews application today.

I have a graph paper map for tent placement so Jay & I can mark off an appropriate amount of camping space.

Everyone needs to bring food for lunch or money to buy food, water for guild & camp area, snacks to share, beverages for yourself for the weekend.

a few people need to bring propane bottles for cooking/water heating. We'll get a detailed sign up when we get closer. Shrews is out in the boondocks and it is not easy to run somewhere to get what we forget.

Also, there is no cell phone coverage (at least for verizon) so be sure you know where you are going before you leave.

Anything else I'm forgetting or info the newbies need to know?

State Park Group Camping Plans

okay - so Illahee & Belfair don't list group camping areas. Scenic Beach & Kitsap Memorial are booked.

http://www.parks.wa.gov/

above is State Park website. You can check availablity of individual camping sites online. Kitsap Memorial looked like it had 4 spots sorta together if people want to reserve spots individually for the first weekend.

I'm passing the torch. If anyone wants to pick a park, and post that they're reserving a site for the first (or another) weekend - please do. Those that want to follow suit may do so.

I'm not giving up on a group camping weekend, I now have prices and will check availablity for early autum. Maybe then, Scott & Kristin will feel better and be able to join us.

Recipes!!

Here is the recipe I used for the little half-moon shaped Shrewsbury Cakes:
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 cup flour
1 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
1/2 tsp. vanilla and
1-2 tsp. rosewater
1 egg

Sift flour with sugar and nutmeg. Then cut in the butter and sprinknle the rosewater and vanilla over the resulting dough. Beat the egg until it is very frothy and pour that over the dough. Barely mix until it is just moist. Sprinkle flour on a board and roll out until it is 1/4 inch thick. Cut out 3-inch circles and put on ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.
This recipe originally called for just vanilla without the rosewater and omitted the egg, but I thought the egg gives it more substance and the rosewater makes it more authentic. I bought my rosewater from a grocery store in Tacoma called Metropolitan market. They have the neatest stuff there. It is like a gourmet grocery store, and you can find just about anything there.
So, there's my recipe, anyone have any others? *ahem apple cake ahem* ; )

Going to Shrews?

The Shrew sent Jay/Scott the Shrewsbury application. Jay and I have been given the Lord Chamberlain's spot at Shrew. Pleasant Pastymes will bring the black round pavilion (Raven) and P/P blue & white for shade. We will need the burlap back fence, but we have hooks and cording for the front. P/P will also bring whatever furnishing and props we can fit in the van.

We need to get the application in. Jay and I will do it unless Scott particulary wants to? - Scott?

Jay and I will get there Friday around noon. Will mark off the camping area (same spot as last year if we can get it) I'll work our tent tetris on paper to see what size we need. I'll bring shade pop-ups for camping if they can be squeezed in.

So - who's planning on going? Dead line for the application is soon, so please respond if you're a maybe as well as a definite.

Shrews is only 2 months away.

Practice Day/Dress Rehearsal/Feast Day

Faire or no faire (which is rather akin to 'Rain or Shine' these days) we will be lighting the firepit and hauling out the irons, setting up something pavilionish and laying out the various and sundry accoutrement for the making of a fine feast. This SATURDAY is the day! If you want to be WRFF 'gatelisted' (pptimism all the way) attendance is mandatory (for St Brigid's Guildmembers, to be clear).

FRIENDS WELCOME! It's a big enough yard, come join us! It's basically a ren-themed picnic, but we do ask that you come in costume if you can or we shall cast you in the role of patron. Last year, Cassie was our Designated Patron and I think she had some fun with it. (Mayhap we'll get a cameo appearance from Lavinnia this year?)

What will YOU bring?

Fruits -
Breads -
Cheeses -
Pottage -
Handpies - Becky (?)
Meat #1 - Scott (The ever-popular Cauldron Stew)
Meat #2 -
Drink -
Drink -
Pies or tarts -
(Water provided)

Did I forget anything? It's okay to buy what you bring if you can't cook. Bread, apples, pears, cheeses, mead, beer... whatever.

I plan to have a fire going to cook my stew and my cast-iron period-ish grill will be available for the heating and grilling of things (Prior notice on that one would be appreciated).

BRING YOUR OWN FEASTING GEAR! Tankard or Cup, Bowl/plate, and Utensils. Just as we expect of you at faire, this is a dress-rehearsal anyway. $2.50 at Goodwill and you've got a bowl and a wooden spoon, so no excuses. Put your name on anything you bring, especially feast gear. See our website if you're uncertain what to purchase to achieve that peasanty verisimilitude... http://stbrigidshearth.googlepages.com/thepennywisepeasant

Keep in mind that - basically - most feast gear looks the same, one wooden bowl looks a lot like the next one, and anything without a name or initial or some identifying mark will be suspected of being mine and treated accordingly. (Unless it's Mark's in which case the identifying Mark gets to take it home...)

;o)

THIS IS A DRESS-REHEARSAL! As much costuming as you have done, wear it. Plan to be in character for at least a couple hours as we
prepare, consume and clean up after the meal. We will have some activities planned, but we want to do things up as we would if we were holding this feast during faire. (BFA all the way. )

Looks like it might be hot...
BRING SUNBLOCK!!!
WEAR A WIDE-BRIMMED HAT!!!

It will probably be a little buggy...
WEAR BUG-REPELLANT!!!

LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION... Kristin and I are hosting again this year. Come see the fabled sewing room of song and story and the library of forgotten lore (some of it best forgotten, some would say).

If you don't know how to get here, I'll email you the address. PM me or contact me at leakytankard - at - gmail

Keep your chins up, folks! Come what may, we're friends first and foremost, so why not join us in a pleasantly peasanty repast?

See you then!

Ok, so I've was pretty depressed for a few hours, but if I keep dwelling on it I'll never get out of my funk. Let's start looking ahead and planning some fun stuff.
Saturday is the feast day!
Shewsbury is only a little over a month away!
What about taking one of our "faire" weekends and getting together? Camping? Any ideas? I'm pretty sure we all have those weekends free.

Hi everyone!

Please, if you're in Mel's Camping group, please bring your share of Citronella candles. I think we need to bring at least two each or (if my garden is any indication) we're going to get eaten alive at the campsite. Luckily they seem to be sold mostly in two-packs so it's fate, I tell you, fate!

As far as during faire? May I direct you to His Lordship the Duke of "Off"?

I mentioned this to Amilyn, but I thought I'd give a shout out to the rest of the guild as well. I'm planning on spending this weekend sewing like a mad woman, as it's my last full weekend before faire where I have absolutely no outside obligations...faire, family, friends, work, etc. If anyone needs help on a sewing project please feel free to swing by.

Barb...I think you mentioned something about Jilanna's bodice that I FUBAR'd last time. So come on by Sat if you want & we can fix it...plus I think Willy misses Jilanna(or is it the other way around).

Let's meet Sunday 7/6 early morning so Barb can be there and we can get started before the heat of the day.

I will try to find the many tarps I have so we can lay them down (closest size) and see how the layout looks.

Who had the tape measure?

What is a good morning time?

Campsite Tent Arrangements

OK, I've put photos up on our tribe site to show where everyone is going. Mel & her tents plus Kamp Kitchen will all fit in the lower terrace....hopefully we'll be able to wedge a shower tent down there too. Barb did mention about looking at a smaller tent, but she can't go much smaller then she already has because of Jilanna. We did have to move Scott & Kristen around to where Marissa & I thought we were going to go, but we widened & leveled that to the best of our ability today. We've lost a bit of the gathering area in the front...plus some grass...to my tent, but there still is a smallish slopey area right-right at the entrance that should be able to fit several chairs. Plus the arangement of Barb, Marissa & Scott's tents will leave a trangular gathering area in the middle there.

My only concern will be access down to the lower terrace. I've tried to leave walking space around all the tents, but the extra tent for Guy might block the stairs that Scott built around the party tree. We'll have to see when that one goes up if we can angle it to allow access.

I decided not to go to Tall Ships in favor of staying home and doing some sewing. I've been so blah about about sewing projects lately, that I've done almost nothing for faire....plus I've been pretty dman busy to boot.

Anyhoo I got quite a bit done yesterday. I did all my layout & cutting...2 skirts one in black & one in red, 1 square necked smock, an extra fleece cloak for after-hours, and a back laced bodice in red using the Tudor Tailor pattern I bought. And on top of that I made about 25 yards of linen bias tape in red and black. My idea is to make a red & black outfit, and trim the whole thing in contrasting colors. I also want to put some trim on my existing skirts.

So now that everything is cut, all I have to do is sew it together...and that's the easy part!

Becky gave a good heads up about citronella candles for a mosquito problem at the new site and it got me wondering about the new site and its bug challenges. I haven't been out there yet. Would the citronella candles only be used after hours? At the old site, we all knew about the hornet problem and people used different methods to deal. I bought one of those blown glass hanging hornet traps to bring this year. Has anyone used them to good effect? Keeping uneaten food thrown away and lids on trash cans helps. Any other suggestions to discuss?

The last regular meeting of the year (next month's meeting is the *mandatory* full dress rehearsal) is Saturday. It will be held at the home of your humble guildmaster & mistress. (That almost sounds naughty) Most of you have been here before. If you need the address and directions again, email me... leakytankard(at)gmail(dot)com.

Coffee & Chaos starting at noon (as usual).
A Short Meeting starting at 12:30 or 1:00

A cookout/barbecue to celebrate Kristin's Birthday commences immediately upon completion of guild business.

This is a Pot-luck.
If you want something to drink that isn't soda, bring it.

We'll have sodas, water and chips as well as hot dogs and the makings of S'mores. Probably beer depending on whether Scott finds time to make it to that particular store between now and Saturday... Fancier fare I shall leave up to you.

Gifts always appreciated, but not necessary. Our friends' presence is gift enough for us.
Non guild-members are welcome as well.

The e-mail Mel forwarded put this in my mind. We need to get another work party together to get our own camp site cleared out & some grass planted. Sunday's work best for me. Who's in & when?

If you have not made your two required meetings or meeting-plus-equivalent-events, plus practice day, you will not be gatelisted. If you have yet to get up to two on your tally (see below), this weekend is the last chance to make that second meeting. As discussed at the first meeting of the year: MANDATORY PRACTICE DAY IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS TOTAL!

Point Total Primer Refresher (for those who don't remember)...

Monthly Meeting = One Point
Daffodil Day Parade Special Event = One Point
Sewing Day = 1/2 Point
Flyering = 1/2 Point
Sitework (full day) = 1/2 Point

This is intended to reflect the necessity of the social aspects of being a village of characters who have known one another their entire lives. If you don't make your two meetings, or equivalent events/sitework/etcetera, you will not be gatelisted with Saint Brigid's Hearth.

Contact me if you have questions.

I'm going to Portland on Saturday. I NEED to get to the fabric stores down there. I have so many things going on in the next year that I really need to start taking care of projects one by one.
First one on my list is going to the Portland Fabric stores, Fabric Depot and Mill End.
If anyone wants to go with me or would like me to keep an eye out for something particular let me know. I am leaving at 7 am so that I can get home in time for Andrea's party.

Anyone else see this? The site for Port Gamble Medieval Faire (aka 'JuneFaire') has moved to 'Uplands Port Gamble'... whatever the hell that means. Anyone have any info on where that is, parking, etcetera? Their site promises 'more info soon' but has yet to deliver 'more info soon' and it's... well... soon.

31 May -1 June to be exact.

Yeah, really early this year, not the same weekend as the Gig Habor Maritime Parade as of old.
Oh well, there goes that tradition... sigh. Is nothing sacred?

OT: Why do you do Ren Faire?

I thought it might be interesting to take a moment out of our busy lives to reflect on why exactly we reenact a time so long ago. It takes a lot of effort, to say the least, it doesn't make very much money, there's always somebody trying to "ruin the party", so why go on? I believe it goes much deeper than a history lesson.
For me, it's like that window of insanity in life to keep me sane. It's living out a childhood fantasy, and going back to when life was much more simple than today, at least technologically speaking. It's also a chance to really let go and be free, because during Faire you're someone else. This will be my first faire volunteering, but the visit to Faire last year left a deep impression on me, and like all the arts, I believe it is just as important to a person as air and water.

I just heard a distubing (Rumor). I was told that Faire had not gotten a permit from Mason County to have the faire, that only a state permit has been issued. Does anyone know, the news flying here is Seabeck and Belfair is that the faire won't happen this year. I have been asked by several people what I planned on doing since there would be no faire. Anyone have any news for me. I told them all that as far as I knew that we were having faire and everything had been taken care of. Would be good to be able to refute the naysayers. Thanks

I am trying to plan a house/mortgage warming party at my place next month, but keep running into conflicts. The 7th is the Gig Harbor Parade & was thinking about doing it later on that afternoon, but it conflicts with SIFF for one of my friends. The 14th is Andrea's graduation party, then the 15th is Father's Day. The 21st is the meeting/birthday BBQ...I could do it on the 22nd, but I don't really want to do it on a Sunday.

So Sat June 28th...anything going on that day?

I have Scott's approval to take this under my wing. I finally got an e-mail with specifics of payment. The event is on Saturday May 17th, 1000-1800 (6pm), which is also a meeting day. Maybe we could turn it into a rehersal? It would give us public interaction. Now ON TO THE

Hi Everyone! Please forgive the cross-post...

REMINDER: Due to all of the events that seem to have congregated on the same weekend, there will be no St Brigid's Hearth meeting this weekend.

All members of St Brigid's are actively encouraged to attend all of the fliering events and sitework parties they can make it to. If you attend a site work event or a fliering event, you will be given 'credit' toward your meeting total (under the formula discussed at our first meeting) which goes toward your inclusion on the SBH gatelist. If you already have your two 'points' I would naturally encourage you to go anyway, because it'll build character... literally. ;o)

Everyone have a great weekend! I'll see you out there... somewhere?

Tall Ships-Tacoma Actors needed -$$Money to be made

Greetings and Good Morrow!

Up and coming is the 2nd Tall Ship Festival over the 4th of July weekend (Thursday July 3rd through Monday July 7th). Great information on this event is at www.tallshipstacoma.com.
If you've never been, we highly advise it!

Imagine more than 32 Tall Ships as they grace the Commencement Bay waterways! On land, three themed villages will be available for guests to enjoy entertainment, food, beer gardens, arts-and crafts, hands-on activities, children's activities, and the sights and sounds of being on board a sailing vessel. A performers application has been submitted and approved for the WRFF PAD.

What this means is that Washington Renaissance and Fantasy Faire PAD is going to have an awesome opportunity to get out there and not just pass out flyers but really promote faire and show folks from not only our state but all over the world just what they've been missing. It will also be a great opportunity to let people know that we are going to be at a new location and the opportunity to garner financial support.

Unfortunately we cannot do this without you. The reason we are writing today is to encourage folks to commit to at least 1 full day of the festival. The festival runs from 10-8 each day (except July 3 when the time is noon to 6 PM). If you cannot do the full day, at least commit to five hours - either 10:00AM until 3:00PM or 3:00PM until 8:00PM for full festival days.
You will need to be in garb and be prepared to have fun.

We will have a booth set up so props, etc can be stored - flyers picked up, boards with Faire information, promotional items to be sold, etc. We will need at least 2 people to be in the booth at all times to answer questions and give additional information. Others will be expected to entertain the crowds in line waiting to board the ships or strolling the villages. This is a great opportunity to give a large crowd a taste of what they can expect at Faire.

The event committee is really looking for lots of costumed performers to give the illusion of a village.
We can do this and reap the rewards!

Now the benefits of committing to this event are as follows. Each person who commits to an 8 hour shift will receive $50.00 a day, each person who commits to a 5 hour shift will receive $25.00 a day, your camping fees for faire will be waived (this counts as a flyering event!) a peasant lunch of bread, cheese, nuts and fruit will be available ….and…. you'll get to practice some of those short skits, dance moves and songs you've been working on all winter. Last but not least, you have the opportunity to be a part of and to witness an incredible event. In addition Tacoma puts on an awesome fireworks display if you are there on the fourth of July!

Please respond to this email (the email address is pyrdog@yahoo.com) and let us know which days and shift you can commit for. We are limited at this time to 30 people each day. It will be first response - first signed up. Children are welcome; your child will be your responsibility. Only those 17 and older will be paid by the Tall Ship Festival. Hurry and pass this along to any you think might be interested, have appropriate garb and a strong desire to have fun - don't forget to respond... we need a head count as quickly as possible to make this happen.

Sincerely,

I've got a whole weeks vacation coming up starting 5/19. I've got some painting & yard work that I want to do, but I'd also hold a stitch & bitch if anyone would be interested. Any day except 5/22 as that's when I plan on signing my final loan docs for my house & likely standing in line to see Indy...the house officially becomes mine on Fri 5/23!!!

If anyone is intersted...lemme know what date/times would work.

That's the name of the sewing maching I am now inlove with, and I don't want to give her back! See, my Mom ordered a sewing machine off HSN (or QVC, I forgot which) because she wants to learn to sew. This machine is 90% computerized, and far more advanced than one would need who doesn't sew. Well, Mom says to me, "I know you have to redo your skirts and stuff before faire, so why don't you take the sewing machine for now, until I need it. Learn how to use it then teach me." Well, I haven't got to sewing my skirts yet, because I noticed the hems on my cloak, and how horrible they were. SO I took mostly that apart and just finnished sewing the hood. I got creative and used an "embordry" hem (little flowers and leaves) It's such a nice touch! The cloak is dark green, and the thread is black, so it wouldn;t really stand out. SOOOO PRETTY! I think I will use the same for the two hems running down the front. I'm rambling, I'm sorry. ANYWAY, back to the point, Gretel and I have bonded...

If anyone needs a place to change before the meeting, you are welcome to come to my house and change. I live 8 blocks from the parade and we usually walk down the hill.
Just be warned that the walk UP the hill is brutal! I'm not kidding, it's tough!
April meeting will be here after the parade.

I got confirmation from Ron that we will have flyers for the Daffodil Festival.

Scott will need to get the Daffodil & meeting after plans posted. Once posted I will cancel the reservation on the apt. commons for April.
Jay and I will not be available that date.

Are we meeting at Scott & Kristin's for June as well? - Kristin wanted to but I didn't hear the final decision. Please let me know so I can release that date if we're not meeting at the apt.

Ron is going to forward what he has on area events, I will continue to update dates and post.

What's everyone's availabilty for a site work day on Saturday April 5?

This would be for faire site work - (not camping this time)

I've been told bush needs to be picked up and moved, so it doesn't require a great deal of skill.

Please bring - good work gloves, wear warm work clothes, and bring Loopers if you have them.

Those who wish to have larger household camping sites will need to devote some time to faire site work as well as clear their own camping site.

Please respond if you're available and willing to come out and I will let Amy & Ron know to expect us.

feel free to come early before dialogs and knock on the apartment door (beware apartment is a disaster, I've been trying to sew) or plan on staying after the meeting. Anytime 11:00 a.m. or after is okay for early :)

I don't think we have any plans except copying patterns after meeting for the lost girls -

So if anyone wants to go to dinner - hang out - we don't have a lot of choices in Port Orchard, but we can find something.

The Grab Bag improv class in Seattle (X-posted from WRFF)

So last week was my 1st session for a class offered by Unexpected Productions called "The Grab Bag" . It's a 5 week course with 5 different teachers. They watch you perform anything from open scenes, to monologues and games. This is followed up with comments and feedback designed to make you a better improviser. There are 4 weeks left, and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND that anyone who wants to polish their improv skills take this class. If you're afraid you don't have enough experience I wouldn't even worry about that..

It's offered Sunday form 3-6 at the Market Place Theatre (near the gum wall) in Post Alley (Pike's Place). There are 4 weeks left and you don't have to take all the sessions. You can pay as you go. Sessions are $25 each. If you want more information check out the site: http://www.unexpectedproductions.org/special_classes.htm

Again if you have the slightest tingle of wanting to be a better improviser I totally recommend this class to start.

Or non work day as the case may be. I apologies to everyone but I have been slammed at work and it looks like I am going to be working on the weekends for a while to keep up.

So, if anyone wants to volunteer to host the St Brigid's Hearth work day this month and can start on making the benches please contact me and we can go over details.

If not, no worries, hopefully I can find a day in April to have it.

Kristin and I are both ill and will be hermiting this weekend while we recuperate. Ergo, we won't be making the meeting.
(Mmmm doctors and tests and blood-sucking hematologist... fun!)

Please continue with the meeting as planned, discuss your characters a little and do your acting exercises and let me know how it goes.

I'm making one nice pleated skirt, and I just wanted to make sure about the placement. Are all skirts worn at the natural waistline, or do some bodices come slightly further down and therefore the skirts are worn more at the top sections of the hip? Is there a preferred standard, or is it just whatever suits your fancy?

February meeting

February's Meeting:

Saturday, February 16
Orchard Park Apartments Commons Room
Port Orchard

I spoke with Scott after the meeting and we decided to revive the Acting Interactive Theater exercises during the Guild meetings.

February's meeting schedule will be as follows

11:30 - Elizabethan Dialogues (this is optional, but if you plan on attending let me know so I make enough dialogue copies)

12:10ish - coffee & chaos

12:30 - meeting - business first

1 or 1:30ish - Acting exercises (90 minutes to 2 hours this will eventually turn into rehearsal as well)

It is to the actor's and the guild's benefit to attend as many meetings as you are able in order to hone your skills for faire.

Master Scott - pipe in if I've forgotten something.

The script, casting, et al...

Just to keep everyone abreast of things...Some of our ideas for shows didn't pan out, so we're taking a different direction, writing something from scratch. The NEW script is in the early stages and being worked on via email collaboration By Mark, Charles, Mike, Ray and me in our spare time.

The premise is: Virtue. (Chastity, Temperance, Charity, Diligence, Patience, Kindness, Humility) And we can hopefully play it for funny by casting against type.

If you want to be an actor, you speak up now or you WILL NOT get lines.
If you want to be an actor, you have to attend the rehearsals or you WILL NOT get a role.

I don't want to sound like an ogre, but that's the way it is. The script is being written as a framework around which to improv, not as lines to be memorized and delivered by rote, so that will help. Even so, improv takes practice too, so we will be rehearsing at the monthly guild meetings. That means there will be FIVE rehearsals (minimum, we'll schedule extras if we decide we need them). We want everyone to be in on the fun, and get involved, but we can't put together a show if we can't count on you to deliver on your commitment. So if you know you won't be able to make it, don't volunteer. We won't hold it against you.

If you have ideas... please pass them along. Bring on the funny!

I was just at Hancock fabrics in Tacoma and they have their wools on sale 40% off. It's a decent variety, at least better than Joann's, and a variety of colors and textures.
I think they are suppose to be onsale until the 13th of Feb. At least that's what the sales lady, but I'm not sure their staff is that well informed.
I'm going back soon to get more!

As promised, but very late, here are the links to the projects.

For the table the one on this page looks good and period: http://www.bloodandsawdust.com/sca/campstuff.html
For the benches these ones look good http://www.greydragon.org/furniture/benches.html
I was thinking of using Tusk Tenons to hold them together instead of wood dowels. Looks more period Pdf on that: http://www.bloodandsawdust.com/sca/tusktenons.pdf

Wood: After some more research I found they did use pine. Pine is light and sturdy (and cheep!) so that is our best bet.
The oil we would use on these would be BOILED linseed oil (less sticky when it dries).

Dates for the builds. Unless someone wants to take the initiative and lead a group in February, the first day will be in March. With the car situation I have to much going on in February.

Please bring to the feast (for those who are coming)

Yourself in garb (if you have it otherwise just yourself)
A drinking vessel (tankard, goblet, flagon, beaker, anything remotely period will do)
beverage for yourself
bread for your party (every 2 to 4 people should bring a loaf)
an eating knife (a steak knife will do in a pinch, I have some, but not enough)

- if you have a period type serving dish for your offering, so much the better, but I do have some

don't forget your entertainment offering :)

Of good manners... etiquette for the feast

Of good manners learn so much as thou can;
It will thee prefer when thou are a man.
Aristotle, the philosopher, this worthy saying writ,
That manners in a child are more requisite
Than playing on instruments and other vain pleasure;
For virtuous manners is a most precious treasure.

from Seager's School of Virtue

Hail and well met good friends!
It is the glorious era of the end of the renaissance.
The Tudors did not use the word "etiquette", instead they used the word "courtesy."
Table manners were seen as part of the whole code of behavior considered suitable for a well-bred Christian.

Before the feast begins, ceremonial hand washing is performed by all. A prayer to all mighty God is offered and the first of three courses is served.

The tables are set with bread, napkins, trenchers, spoons, and salt cellars. You will have brought your own drinking vessel & knife. Forks are new curious things and not much to be seen in our little village.

Good manners dictate that ye napkin is to be placed over your left shoulder or wrist. (It seems that woman sometimes placed their napkin in their lap.) Courtesy also says that ye knife nor meat be not dipped into the salt.

To take salt you were expected to clean your knife on your bread and then take the slat onto your knife and then to your plate. I have provided small spoons to take the salt (or pepper) onto your plate.

During the interludes between courses we will be entertaining ourselves with songs, readings, stories, and short dramas.

When the feast is complete, a final prayer is said and entertainments may continue.

Alas, in Tudor Times there would have been plenty of servants to wait on us, but in this day we have to do the job ourselves. Therefore each of us will take a turn at serving or clearing.

attn: Mark - recipe for hedgehogs(meatballs)

I made these for the last Celt's feast I attended - they were pretty good, but hard to get the almonds on to make them look like hedgehogs and the almonds mostly fell off after they were cooked. Another recipe you might use is the modern porcupine meatball recipes (the rice in the mixture makes it look like porcupines.)

SAUSAGE “HEDGEHOGS”

2 2/3 lb bulk pork sausage
1 tbsp ground cinnamon
1 1/2 tsp ground ginger
1 tbsp brown sugar
2 tsp salt
3 oz slivered blanched almonds

Mix sausage with spices, sugar and salt. Form into elongated shapes; place on a shallow baking pan. Insert slivered almonds along back of each “hedgehog” Bake at 350 for 30 minutes. Drain on paper towels.

Found a photo of Mark at faire that had been lost all this time. My faulty memory was jogged just a moment ago and I want to post it. The story that goes with this photo is kind of funny and is a testament to Mark's acting ability. Ella and I were standing down by the gate watching Scott doing something weird and Mark approached us with the box. She and I did not know who Mark was at this time nor anything about his character. After he told us about the box and some other stuff, Ella and I were very polite and made our retreat. She remarked, 'I think he is mad don't you mom?' I said ' I don't know but I think he's nut's.' It wasn't until much later on tribe's and on St.Brigid's Hearth home page we read the rest of the story. We still laugh about it. I'm glad I found the photo to share with everybody.

Please no farthingales, no room in the room :)

Online Society Basics - for newbies & others

For our newbies and anyone else who has been avoiding the research -

First, go first to:
Saint Matthew's Guild
http://www.stmatthewsguild.org/
click on Education
read the paragraphs starting with Religion on down through the rest of the list. (they're short)
This will give you a quick overview of Society.

Another good quick overview site is
Renaissance Web Reference
History/Daily Life
http://jackytappet.tripod.com/barfhistory.html
They even have a quick test at the end.

The Tudors at
http://www.historyonthenet.com/Tudors/tudorsmain.htm
This site give you a bit more background on the early Tudors.

Of course, most information is set in England and we play Scotland. Do read The Story of Mary Queen of Scots (its short) you don't need to memorize it - its just an overview
http://www.marie-stuart.co.uk/story.htm

Then as time permits, peruse the following websites:

Life in Elizabethan England A Compendium of Common Knowledge
http://elizabethan.org/compendium/index.html
concentrate on the articles that your character would be familiar with

Elizabethan Era
http://www.elizabethan-era.org.uk/elizabethan-era-sitemap.htm

and visit

Shakespeare's Life and Times
http://elizabethan.org/compendium/index.html
especially the Society, Background ideas, and some of the History (Middle Class, Crime and such)
Again, concentrate on things that your character would know.

These are all set up to be about a page of information at a time. You can learn a fact or two every day or so.

Happy researching :)
