**Shiva Shakti Yoga/Belly Dance Year End Revue Workshop**

Kali Yuga Yoga Studio
January 31st.
*12:00 - 4:00pm.
For prices and registration details go to http://www.kaliyugayoga.com/Yoga+BellyDance.html

Director of Kali Yuga Yoga Leah Lillios and I have been conducting a workshop series called 'Shiva Shakti Yoga/Belly Dance'. The concept behind these classes into create a cohesive relationship between yoga and dance within one class. We have given five workshops in this series thus far.

There are three different types of Shiva Shakti Yoga/Belly Dance classes in this series: Full Body, Upper Body, Lower Body. The Full Body classes which we have named 'Soul Body' involve any combination of belly dance movements done with the head, arms, hands, chest/torso, hips, legs and feet. The 'Upper Body' classes focus on movements specifically done with head, arms, hands and torso. The Lower Body classes focus on movements specifically done with the hips, legs and feet. Students learn vocabulary, movement, technique and combinations which is typed out and given at the end of class for continued study at home.

The time has come for Shiva Shakti to give what we are calling our 'Year End Revue'. This workshop will take certain movements and combinations as taught in previous Shiva Shakti classes and fuse them together for a collection of highlights from each workshop. So, if you have participated in any Shiva Shakti workshops to date, this is a chance to reapply what you learned in your class and get the chance to see what you missed in other Shiva Shakti classes that you were unable to attend! If you have not participated in any Shiva Shakti workshops yet and you are looking for a challenge as a new belly dancer, join us! Don't be scared away! This is still a beginner level belly dance workshop. The Year End Revue will just be covering a little more information than in the regular Shiva Shakti classes.
So, even if this is your first class, if you're an eager learner, this is your gig!

**********************

***********************

THE YARD DOGS ROAD SHOW
The Subtle and the Absurd

The Yard Dogs Road Show is a hobo cabaret, a living
patchwork of vaudeville and rock and roll. In the
enchanting land of stage show entertainment theirs is
both pleasant and formidable terrain. They require a
sensitivity to the subtle and the absurd. They lead
the modern hobohemian on a visual and sonic journey
through part of history that may or may not have
existed followed by an ambitious return to the
emotional challenges of our punch-drunk contemporary
world. It¹s a true story on stage: sword swallowers,
dancing dolls, fire eaters and sunset hobo poetry -
all animated by the live sounds of the Yard Dogs
cartoon heavy band. Yard Dogs Road Show is pure visual
and sonic voodoo.

Born from the saloon vaudeville that toured the Wild
West in the late 1800's and slammed into the
underworld of modern American road culture. The Yard
Dogs create a timeless space for the union of ancient
theatrical alchemy and modern pop culture.

The Before Now and How Did

There is some speculation as to the origin of all
this. Not for the want of mystery but for the
difficulty in translating an experience that was
navigated by the overly-romantic and sleep deprived.
Shows came and went leaving very little time to fully
comprehend what was going on. Some say the
carnival-inspired performance art of the Yard Dogs
Road Show began as a three piece jug band performing
in road houses and dance halls and at informal
gatherings, including Oregon¹s modern day acid tests
with Ken Kesey and The Merry Pranksters. Some say they
traveled in a 1967 Ford Galaxy 500 and the evolution
of their show revealed itself in the flames of a
campfire on Dog Creek Road: dancing dolls with feather
fans, an hombre in silver sunglasses eating fire, a
dreamy guitar boy with golden locks, a bearded swami
capable of conjuring the supernatural . Others say
this story is complete hogwash and it was actually the
brainchild of a unemployed ³cowboy² and his faithful
muse transient artists with an incredible talent for
brainstorming impossible ideas while under the
influence of poppy tea and wishful thinking. By
chance these conversations were overheard by an
ambitious young poet who decided to actualize them for
the sake of all impossible dreams everywhere. When the
three finally immerged from their stupor they realized
that they were in show business. An almost homeless
lifestyle sprinkled with moments of outstanding glory
and recognition. But mostly uncertain days. The only
thing they could rely on was the fact that there would
always be glitter under their fingernails and confetti
in their bed. Truly a life of horseshit and confetti.

Either way, that was eight years ago, and the unlikely
troupe of gypsies has been performing on stages ever
since.

The Bread and Butter

In an historical sense we are a family run show. We
endeavor to operate a values based entertainment
business that sustains itself on pure democracy and
creative collaboration. The Yard Dogs are a naturally
occurring phenomenon - favored by those seeking an
unsullied entertainment experience. We are continually
working towards a refinement of showmanship and
musicianship while simultaneously finding creative
ways to embrace our community and the forever present
unexpected.

The Untold and Who Knows

We have many plans that require many miles. Some say
the show will settle down, maybe in your town in a
small theater or even under canvas - just long enough
to flatten the grass and feed the baby. Whatever the
future holds we want you to be there, dressed in your
finest masquerade. Now is the time to alter the
course of our journey and we hope that you will be
there to witness the charade.

Gwyn offers an tribal-based fusion belly dance class with a style that is influenced by Rachel Brice, Zoe Jakes Jill Parker and Heather Stanz, to name a few from the belly dance world.

***********
Gwyn has been studying Belly Dance since the age of 17. A life long lover of dance, she began her journey with ballet as a young child and has experimented in many styles which has afforded her a diverse perspective in dance. She began her formal Belly Dance training in 2000 learning mostly traditional styles of Middle Eastern Dance under Kristina Kelly of Jackson, MS. Gwyn studied and performed there until she moved to Nashville, TN at the age of 25 where she took a short break from dance to adjust to a new town. All it took; however, was seeing Rachel Brice perform one night in a local theater and she was catapulted back into the study of Belly Dance with a renewed energy that changed her life forever. Gwyn began taking classes and workshops all over the U.S. with Rachel Brice and other artists including Carolena Nerricio, Jill Parker, Heather Stanz, Mardi Love and Zoe Jakes of the Indigo, Moria Chappell and many more continuing her dance education as much as possible.

January 2007 Gwyn founded Bodhicitta BellyDance which has been nominated for "Best Performing Local Artist " as well as traveled and performed internationally. Together with her troupe mates, Gwyn offers the world of Belly Dance a unique style layered with history and fueled by passion with a careful need to be respectful of tradition while equally celebrating the evolution of Belly Dance today.

Come down to Alabama for Jim Boz ...

Jim Boz is coming to Huntsville, AL!!!!!!! The Beledi Club of Huntsville will host the wonderful Boz July 18-20, 2008. All the details aren’t on the Beledi Club’s website yet, but here’s what we have so far:

•	Hafla Friday night either at the hotel of choice or The Studio … possibly wandering to my favorite local gay bar just to amuse Jim and show him off to my friends there.
•	Four hours of classes with Jim on Saturday that will be decided upon at the Club’s January meeting. Check out Beledi Club of Huntsville’s Tribe for a listing of what our options are. http://tribes.tribe.net/belediclub and to keep up to date on our progress with planning this event.
•	A few specially chosen vendors … we have invited Faye and Bipin (who just so happen to be friends of Jim’s), plus Linda (local Beledi Club Member) and Belilah (Beledi Club member) who will be selling Eye Kandy!
•	Show Saturday night at the American Legion which will be a benefit for the local ASPCA, a charity near and dear to the Bozman’s heart. There will be a cash bar and a simple menu available to order from (things like burgers, chicken fingers, fries, pizza, etc). We’re considering having a silent auction or something of the sort to help get money for the ASPCA. The Legion gives us this location for free since we do charity shows, so big kudos to them. Tickets to the show will be $10 each or included in your price if you pay for the workshop by the Early Bird deadline (June 1). Performers aren’t expected to pay for the show, but are asked to make a $5 charitable donation.
•	Three hours of classes on Sunday will be a bit more advanced than that offered on Saturday, but not beyond anyone who survives the previous 4 hours with Jim.
•	Prices are going to be great! The Early Bird Price offered is $125 if paid for by June first. This includes your ticket to the show and 7 hours of class with Jim. After June 1st, the price changes to $150. A single day of classes will be $75 if paid for before June 1st or $80 at the door.
•	We’re working on getting pricing for hotel rooms, but that’s still in the works …
•	Put this one on your calendar – you’ll kick yourself if you miss it!!!!!

Possible dates for Taletha From Ky Worshops

We have been discussing what kind of workshop..March 8th
could do 2 hours of combinations in relation to various rhythms and then some Gothic Belly Dance.
Like 2 hrs in the am, break for lunch then 2 hrs for afternoon, then a show/hafla.
Sam and I were going to offer 2 scholarships for 2 people who could use them...I kinda want them to need it...like thier instructor or friends could almost nominate them..then the names will be picked out of a hat or somthing, to be fair...what do you think?
Check out her site and about her page:

taletha.com/testimonials.htm

Also, we have room for out of town guests...I suppose about 8-10

Hafla report.

I didn't post about the hafla, sorry about that. I don't have pictures, but there are a couple of videos on youtube. They are very dark, I've downloaded one and made it brighter, I should do the other and reupload them. They are from a side angle though, so you can't really see the choreo from its best side.

The band Jawahir is better eery time they play, and I love having them there, it gives the show a good feel. I wish more people had made it out, but it was still a good and happy crowd, and we had a good time. If you weren't there, you missed some really good performances--I'm so proud of everyone for getting up there and giving their all, that's what makes the show fun.

Also, if you weren't there, you didn't get to see <lj user=lepidopteragirl>'s bra, and let me tell you, that was worth the drive by itself!

We are trying to work in tandem with Xenia's crowd in Hendersonville, so we will be alternating haflas. Our next one will be in August. I told Patio the 11th, but I think I'll be moving it to the 18th so it doesn't conicide with Pennsic. If anyone has a problem with the 18th, let me know.

This means that the Hendersonville Hafla will be in July, on the 14th at Cafe Fattoush in Hendersonville. I've not been there yet, but I hear it's nice. I'll probably repost the info closer to date.

One put on by our sister Xenia in Hendersonville on June 9th, and ours, as it looks, will be on June 16th! Plenty of time to put a routine together, let me know if you want to perform!

Thank you everyone who made it out to the Durga tour in Lebanon, TN! It was our first time hosting a workshop and I am thrilled with how well it went. Thank you, Rhonda especially, for putting yourself through the stress of hotels and payments, and thanks to Tempest and Ariellah for being patient and friendly to everyone--especially Bill, who will be talking about the visit from the faous California bellydancers for months, I think!

Again, I am inspired by our Nashville bellydance community and the dancers in it!

Buy Tempest's DVD, Bellydance for the Beautiful Freaks, and Ariellah has a DVD out next year!

If you need the choreography from Ariellah's workshop, I am still waiting to hear back from her, but leave a message here and I will send it to you when it comes in.

The Durga Tour is coming to the Nashville, TN area!

Tempest and Ariellah will be coming to the Nashville, TN area on Friday October 13th to present two 90 minute workshops, The Darker Side of Drilling & Dramatic Body Language.

Workshops will be held in the Aerobics room at the Jimmy Floyd Family Center in Lebanon, TN. Pre-registration cost for workshops (Until October 1st) is $30 for each workshop or $50 for both. October 1st the cost will go to $35 for individual workshop or $60 for both.

There will be a special Halloween Gothla that evening at A perfect cup as well. If we have enough support from the community (in the form of pre-registrations) Tempest and Ariellah will be performing!

Tempest will be teaching Dramatic Body Language – At the heart of Gothic Belly Dance is the ability to express deep emotions through the dance in a dramatic style. While in theory, this makes sense, understanding how to make this happen physically is another matter. How does one go about transferring matters of the heart, mind, and spirit into a corporeal expression? In this workshop, we learn to take regular belly dance movements and add Gothic accents to them, focusing on expressing emotion, intent, and power through our steps and presence. From facial expression to fingertips, we’ll be dissecting the accents that give Gothic Belly Dance extra substance, drama, and excitement. You’ll take home movement embellishments and flourishes to incorporate into your own style. This class is especially for any dancer who is ready to perform or is considering it.

Ariellah will teach us *The Darker Side of Drilling* In Ariellah’s workshop, she will drill chest isolations, pops, locks, and snake-like gothic belly dance arm movements. Students will also learn a short choreography, which will incorporate these techniques. Reinforcing fundamentals will bring strength, fluidity and a touch of the darker side to the student's movements.

In the meantime if you'd like to pre-order a Tour T-shirt. You are currently able to pick your preferred size and style, and have it delivered to you at your stop! This means you're guaranteed the style and size you want. The shirts will be black with white printing, featuring the tour logo (Durga on the running camel) on the front, and Tour info on the back, available in regular tee's, baby doll's, ribbed tanks, and spaghetti tanks.
Pre-orders on T-shirts close on September 3rd so order yours today at darklydramatic.com/tempest/...rts.html!

*About Tempest: *
Tempest is an artist, designer, dancer, and writer currently based in the Bay Area of California. Although she enjoys studying what tradition has to offer, Tempest loves exploring the dance through unusual music and creative costuming, pulling on her visual arts background to "paint a picture" with the dance; engaging the audience through dramatic embodied storytelling, passionate expression, and sensuous, mesmerizing movement. She finds inspiration for her dances in many eras, places, and faces, from ancient cultures and spiritual myths worldwide, to the work of silent film star and original vamp Theda Bara, and turn-of-the-century dance goddess Ruth St. Denis. She is most well-known for her Gothic Belly Dance performances and instruction, and is featured on the first ever GBD performance DVD produced by WorldDanceNewYork entitled “The Darker Side of Fusion” and is set to release “Bellydance for Beautiful Freaks”, an instructional DVD, this fall.

*About Ariellah: *Ariellah Aflalo studied classical ballet with the Royal Academy of Dance of London for twelve years, beginning at age three. After a four-year break from dance that included two years in the Peace Corps on Africa’s Ivory Coast, she returned to the United States eager to learn the dance of her Moroccan ancestry.

Trying her hand at belly dance had been a lifelong goal, and was a natural extension of Ariellah’s dance career and life experience. Her pursuit of belly dance began with Janine Ryle, who studied with San Francisco belly dance institution Hahbi'Ru. Ariellah eventually became a part of Janine’s troupe, Danse Maghreb. With roots grounded firmly in the culture and tradition of North Africa, belly dance came naturally to Ariellah. Janine encouraged her desire to learn from as many sources as possible, and suggested that she take classes with Rachel Brice, who is currently touring internationally with The Bellydance Superstars.

Ariellah began studying with Rachel in early 2002 and became a founding member of Rachel’s Indigo Belly Dance Company in 2003. Ariellah is currently busy teaching, performing and practicing. Most recently, she won first place in the Star Fusion category of Sirens In Sanity’s belly dance competition, Enchanted Camelot, held in Benecia, CA in 2004. Also, Ariellah recently founded her own belly dance company, Noor Belly Dance, with belly dance partner Suzan Revah.

Ariellah’s style reflects her personal interpretation of tribal fusion belly dance, which blends the darker side of Middle Eastern, American Tribal Style and cabaret belly dance with Indian and Flamenco influences, while embracing a modern San Francisco flavor. Her style emanates from the passion, joy and contentment that belly dance has brought to her life, allowing her to fully express herself in a unique and beautiful way.

There will be no hafla in June, because Kim-chee and I will be out of town for most of the weekends. The next hafla will be on the 15th of July.

That gives everyone about a month to come up with new stuff to show off! Remember, I hold these things so that we have a place to hang out and perform, to cheer each other on and make new friends. If you have been thinking of testing out a new routine, our haflas are a wonderful place! We accept all levels of bellydance performers, from beginner to advanced.

Anyone who wants to perform need only contact me, here are the rules:

Your song must be on CD and be less than 5 minutes long.

Your costume must be finished and family friendly - do not show up in a coin belt and store bought bra.

Solo or group work is fine, just keep in mind that the stage is very small!

No snakes, fire or extended veilwork.

I know that I've needed to do this for a while, but today it is raining and I'm tired from the hafla last night so I'm putting in some computer time. Welcome to our little tribe.

One of the reasons I haven't done this is because half of StellaLuna is not on Tribe anyway, but that should be fixed quite soon. Rose should have her computer set up next week, and Kim is trying to figure out Tribe anyway. Rhonda and I are old Tribesters though.

Last night's hafla went really well, our choreography that we got together in two or three practices went off without a hitch. There was a moment of dismay when one of the performers had a routine planned to the same song we'd planned to use, but I ended up sticking a long break in the performances anyway, and I don't think anyone noticed.

Onca and Baraka Mundi stopped by and did a little performing too, which was so sweet, I know they are very tired from performing at the Ren Fest all month, but I hope it was fun for them anyway. We loved having them in out little hillbilly hafla!
