Saturday, April 4 Workshops:

"Layering 101"
12:30-2:30pm :: $35 per class or $60 for both pre-reg /$40 per class at door

Learn the basics and concepts in the art of layering. With the tools and knowledge you learn in this workshop you will be on the way to becoming a pro. The class will cover specific techniques to overcome the difficulties that arise when trying to layer, along with different drills to accompany the technique. At the end of class a short combination will be taught that includes layering, of course! Be prepared to challenge your brain and bring a notebook. When you leave the workshop I promise you will want to add a shimmy to everything you do.

"The Slow & Subtle"
3:00 - 5:00pm :: $35 per class or $60 for both pre-reg /$40 per class at door

This workshop will focus on slowing down and integrating the core to initiate those slow, gooey movements. The warm-up is yogalates based and will concentrate on core, balance, and strengthening exercises that will be applied to the dance form. In the workshop students will drill various slow movements focusing on the core and learn how making subtle changes to the simple movements translates to noticeable beauty. Students will also learn Steven's Atash Mayan stylized gooey combinations that can be used in an improvisational situation or in choreography.

Tonight, just 9 minutes in to the show - there were a few delicious seconds of Steven in full make-up and costume in the waiting room, listening to his ipod. Sadly they didn't even have the sense to interview our Beautiful Boy , nor use his audition on the show.... sniff :(

After our Steven packed his car for Tribal Fusion Faire last weekend, it was broken into and he lost everything: all of his tribal costuming, jewelry, MAC makeup, music, iPod, everything.

New Pick-up Class

Stevens Pick-up Class begins on the 12th and will be held at City Ballet.

8:00 - 9:30pm
The class is set to train dancers how to learn and perform in a fast paced manner not dissimilar to an audition.
The ability to pick up a set of movements and show them is an ability that is learned for most people, so this class is to help dancers tone that ability.The class will help dancers train the skill needed to learn a last minute set, or relax a bit more during auditions or solo performances. It is a (see and do) class.

The best students for this class would be ones that feel it takes time for them to absorb a set of movements Beginning or advanced. It will help them avoid the "Zone out" that happens in auditions and when it's time to solo and classes while learning combos and choreography. Like meditation keeping alert in the moment takes practice so this is what this class will strengthen.

Belly Dancing Fire Fan Workshop with Steven:

In this workshop we will cover fire safety and costume strategies, basic movement, fan handling techniques, as well as original fire fan dance combinations that can be incorporated into any choreography or improve situation.

Steven Eggers has over 6 years of Belly-dancing experience. When he moved to San Diego in 2005, he joined the prestigious Atash Maya Dance Company where he performs and teaches their own unique style of Tribal Fusion and American Tribal Style Belly Dancing.

Please bring a set of fire fans with you to class. Silk fans may be substituted, and those variations will be covered if needed. Fire Fans will be available for purchase by “Fire by Trick Concepts” at Abundant Sugar before and after the workshop.

Dancers wanted for a Live Band

Global Band Oojami are seeking dancers for local, national and international events. Previously they have worked with very high profile dancers such as Khaled Mahmoud, and some of Belly Dancer Super Stars. They are seeking a number of dancers whom they can work with.

Auditions

Dancers will be given a maximum of 10 minutes to audition, 5 minutes of this can be a choreographed routine, and the rest will be improvised to an Oojami Track of Necmis choice on the day.

The Judges : Two musicians and Two dancers

Oojami is Necmis band, so he will have to be one of the panel. Oojami well known in Belly Dancing circle since their first album Bellydancing Breakbeats released in 2002 by the same company runs Belly Danceing Super Star show. He also created platform many for years to Belly Dancers with his own club Hubble Bubble and took Belly Dancing to over 15 countries, big stages and TV shows in many countries.
Shafeek Ibrahim has been working with Oojami for some time now and is well placed to be on this panel as he is a highly trained dancer, has held auditions before, and has auditioned himself, and brings years of expertise of working with live musicians to this event.
Ahmed Mohamed owner of Darbuka was a member of Oojami in the past, and as a highly trained musician has something to offer to the panel.
Anne White will offer this place to a well known exponent of the dance world
What is expected of Dancers who audition

· They must be a natural dancer, who is attractive and presentable

· Who is comfortable on stage and who can improvise well

· Who can communicate with the band and crowd whilst dancing and involve them/connect with them on stage.

· Originality in costume as well as in dancing

· Has a minimum of 2 professional style costumes

Selection Criteria

Any style can be used Oriental or Tribal for example. We are open to all disciplines. You can use props for some of your routine-but no Isis wings as the ceiling is low
Planet Egypt has an inclusive policy so we are not gearing auditions to Cookie Cutter dancers. So if you are in a normal range of age, size, shape etc then you would be welcome
Planet Egypt is hosting this event to assist Oojami and as a service to the wider Dance Community where they have established their reputation. Planet Egypt will not be on the judging panel.
The event will be filmed as a record, but not for commercial gain. All participants can have a copy of the event (perhaps at an affordable price eg cost price). It is possible that footage may be used for PR reasons on Oojamis web site and on Planet Egypt web site
Other Information

In order to help towards transport costs we are selling tickets at £5 per head to cover this event. It also helps to have an audience to create a live experience for participants.

The dressing room is small and we will create a tight running order. We suggest that you come already warmed up and made up to save time and space.

There is no stage or dedicated performance space, and lighting is quite dim. The ceiling is quite low. Seating is on all sides. The décor is oriental and the mood ambient. Shishas are on sale so it might a bit smoky.

We aim to help cover transport costs but we cannot make any guarantees. Please bring proof of travel costs on the day, re-imbursement may not happen on the day it might occur at a later stage. (***tho in England, this is very important that they state this!*** sooz)

If for any reason, you are unable to participate eg as you have a conflicting event that day, submit your form as detailed below, and state that you cant make the audition date. You must supply footage of yourself performing and decisions will be made by Oojami and not the judging panel. Planet Egypt will not be part of this process though; 45b Myddleton Road, London N22 8LY

There will be other events in that week for dancers who are keen….

On Friday 25th May Planet Egypt will be hosting an event with Leyla Jouvana (more details coming soon) and there will be a showcase as usual on 31st May (see here)

To participate in this event, you need to submit this form to Planet Egypt who will give you a scheduled slot for 27th May. After announcing this event we will immediately start allocating times. It will not be an all day event - so priority will be given to those that respond soonest.

Prior to the event you will be contacted by Planet Egypt to inform you of your slot.

Bring a photo of yourself and a video clip or a video tape/cd of yourself on the day. Remember to write your name on the photo and on the video/dvd. Do not use paper sticky notes as they may disappear.

This is Part 1 of the Process, Oojami will take the next step. All participants will be contacted after Part 1 is completed to inform them of decisions that have been made.

All those who are deemed acceptable by the panel irregardless of whether they proceed to Phase 2 or not will be invited to participate at a future Planet Egypt Showcase.

There is an opportunity for some successful applicants to perform live with Oojami at Raqs Britannia.
