Patrick Duffey - Voice from the Beyond

This is not going to mean much to most of you, but I'm busting with....I don't know what to call it really. Pride, relief, joy.....It's a mix.

Got an e-mail from Patrick Duffey. With whom I haven't worked in over 31 years. And I haven't seen him in about 25 years.

I'm thrilled. First, that this brilliant creature is still among the living, and, second, that he was kind enough to respond to an e-mail I sent him.

Just wanted to share the (slightly radioactive) glow.

I sooo hope I hear from him again, but if it's only this once, I'm a happy lamprey.

Noel, that is so great! I knew you were harboring a not-entirely secret worry, and it'a great to have it smashed. I don't think I ever actually met Duffy but he was part of Court Legend for many years. Glad news.

Most court folks these days don't know what they owe to him.

Rydell (Possum Head) and Merry Maggot:

I was so hoping you two (at least would see that). I knew you'd get what I meant!

          Sharing the Tainted Joy!

Please, please, please forgive me, but I can't hold this back any longer. It's so vain of me, but it was such a huge compliment that I have to bore you (who are in the know) with it. I've already tortured E-Beetle yesterday.

Again, this will mean next to nothing to those who don't know about Le Duffey, but when I prefaced my initial e-mail with the comment that he probably wouldn't remember me, he responded:

<<Of course I remember who you are; who could forget. If my memory still serves, you went from relative obscurity to icon status in a matter of a few week-ends at the northern faire.>>

It really doesn't get any better than that!!!!!! I literally let out a whoop when I read it.

              Glowing!!!!

Isn't Tainted Joy a Soft Cell/Joy Division cover band?

Darling Noodle you WERE an icon ! Aren't you still ?

I am so glad to know Le Duffy is among the hale & hearty !
I saw him in the audience at my last Faire ( '93). I was amazed, but found no one to tell who would have remembered him.
WE remember him, and his deathless line , " If they look at your feet, there's something wrong with your face ! "
I was a kid from ther 'burbs, and he was my intro to alot of the counterculture.
Nilos Nevertheless tells a story of him in the old Sutro Baths, with incredible debauchery all around, and Himself is painting Botticelli - like frescoes on the walls.
God Save the Earl of Oxford !

Morgan, I am indeed feeling a bit iconic at the moment.

But it's more because I feel like I've been run over, flattened, pasted onto a plank, and then varnished. But I'll settle for just about anything at this point!

And it is great to know that the Duffster is still out there, watching over us.

Makes you feel like behaving (or not, as the case may be).

"I don't think I ever actually met Duffy but he was part of Court Legend for many years."

Still is in some ways... Aurie still tells stories of him and his contributions to some of the dances we do to this day. His presence in this way is still with us at least in (Danserie) Terpsichore.

I sooo wish y'all could meet him.

Not sure if he's as ferocious today as in the day, based in part on my receiving that compliment.

His last "compliment to me," in 1976 or so, was, squinting at me "You're a sick little man...." With David Springhorn egging him on. Or perhaps it was David, with Duffey looking on. I those days the two worked in tandem. And I was really too scared to have a clear picture of who was talking.

They were a walking Scylla and Charybdies. You did not want to get stuck between that rock and a hard place, believe you me!!!!!!!

Yahoooo! I'm so glad to know he is doing well and kudos to you, dear Noel, for tracking him down! Duffy the icon! Duffy the mentor! Duffy, my friend! Duffy was so versatile, he not only played a heck of a Nobleman, but he also played the first schoolmaster in my Workshop in the Woods program "The School at Muddleby Ende". You have inspired me to go and find the newspaper article of a fashion show he and I did together in Southern CA and scan it in and post it for all of you. You old timers remember Winkie Warwick's 40 lb famous black velvet dress? Duffy designed it! He is a many talented man and I hope he can be persuaded to join us on tribe! Thank you for the news, Noel!

It's on the St. George photos page with the caption! You were there? Really? We did the whole thing about Mi'Lady getting dressed from the chemise out, then being escorted off to see the Queen by Patrick. He and Kelson were really the ones responsible for designing and building that dress for me. I still have it. I thought if I ever could get the LHC exhibit thing going, I would donate it to that.

I remember the legend and the undercurrent of excitement if we knew he was "on the grounds". Please be sure to pass on to him that your "slightly radioactive" glow is shared by many.

(and BTW - Bill - I haven't heard the word 'kindercourt" in so many years that I feel like an old grandmother. Has it really been that long ago???)

    Love to all, Gret
