For those of us on Facebook, here's another place to get connected...

And this week, I'll be hauling Big Pink (my mighty red stereo) down to Robson Square to dance the afternoon away on Saturday from 2-4pmish. Come play!

(for those of you who don't know what the Saturday Circus is, it is a weekly gathering of skill toy and circus performers - hoops, juggling, poi, staff, diablos, unicycles, and stilters so far) who get together either underground at the Robson Square rink, or upstairs in front of the steps up to the Vancouver Art Gallery cafe if the weather is nice, from 2-4pm .. and we practice, perform, play and socialize!)

Upcoming guerilla events seek hot performers

Hey there Flamily

I'm organizing two events that need some entertainment involving a riske touch and moves you might not show at family events. We hold these events as fundraisers for PedalPlay ( www.pedalpower.org/ This isn't a particularly erotic request, but we're looking for some fire and or stilt performers to contribute to:

-' Off the Grid, Off the Charts' Sept 1 @ undisclosed location with PedalPlay's pedal powered sound system and DJ Robin Banks, Jim Rebel and some friends (maybe you?) late night party. For this a small group of people who'd like to work with me to create a couple of 15 minute shows to do, possibly in an area with trees nearby. I'm working on finding the Silks woman that was beside our baseball diamond @ Illuminares as well. The fuel is covered for the show, and an small honorarium can be given to the group.

-'Velomutations 07' on Sept 22 (sat.night). Velomutations 2006 was the first event I did fire and stilts for in Van and coordinated Shauna, Fill Freakin and Pest- it was huge, with about 5oo people at the PedalPlay studio. Other performers included the Sprockettes 16 girl dance troupe from Portland Oregon (they use fire now as well, and a carousel) and the Brakes all boylesque bike dance (and strip) breakdance crew locals. Also the BC Clettes will be performing after returning from their West Coast Tour this September. As well, fuel for the show and a small honourarium can be made available. But this also happens to be the best party I've been to in vancouver so far.

That also means FIRE TEX as well. I had a great time working with the Fire Brigade for Illuminares and enjoyed the contributions everyone had to make. Lets do it again. -glenna.

Rumor has it that Critical Stilts at BM will be on Thursday again this year. still meeting at the Red Nose District but it might not be at 2 like last year but rather at 4 or so . Check the Critical Stilts Tribe for up to the min details...I hope to see you all there!

Want to incorporate hoops into your stilting performances?

I'm offering an off-body hooping workshop this Sunday, July 8, 2007!

3:30-5:00pm at the Dance Centre, Davie and Granville St

$30 if you have a hoop, $35 to rent a hoop.

Learn vertical and horizontal hand-hooping, swings and hand-to-hand passes, jumps and skipping, as well as figure-8s, spins, stalls, tosses and turns! Visit the Images page at http://christahoops.com to see videos of some of these moves :)

We will not be practicing any on-body hooping, so using a lightweight kiddie hoop is fine (even recommended, if you have concerns about developing bruises on your hands from hand-hooping with the usual adult-weight hoops) as long as you can still step or jump through the hoop (slow-motion is fine!)

Critical Stilts at Commercial Drive Fest?

How about we do a Critical Stilts at Commercial Drive Fest? I know it isn't really taking over Robson St or anything crazy but it would be a good start and for a fun cause. I know lots of stilters will already be there. It is a big open road and lots of other fun events are going on. All we would have to do is make a meeting spot and time and the organizers could help us spread the word. I'm sure the organizers would love the idea! Critical Stilts?

Well there was an impromptu critical stilts in down town Van on Sat afternoon and may be we should do it again? There is already a regular meeting of Poi, Jugglers and Hola Hoopers at the Art gallery at 2pm on Saturdays now. A bunch of stilters showed up this weekend and we went for a cruise down Robson. We could do it again if people are interested?
What Sat in the coming weeks would work good for you?

i am putting a small group of stilters who want to walk the parade in the colors of the flags.....all we ask is that you commit to costume in an assigned color of the flag...we will be either carrying flags, flying them, or spinning them along the route with Co-op Radio and Sweet Soul Burlesque....This was SOOO much fun last year...

Critical Stilt Mondays?

Well as you can see by the pics we finally got a few members out for a walk on Monday. We hit Robson St hard, going into stores (They have those super tall glass doors!) chatting with kids, blocking some traffic..etc.. it was great. So we think if critical mass bikes is the last friday of the month Critical Stilts should be the last Monday of the month. We will meet at the Art gallery down town Vancouver at 530pm from now on. What do you think? Next meeting would be Monday 26th of June?
(also don't forget about Commercial Drive fest on the 18th)
Thoughts???

Newbie coming out...

So I stood up on my stilts for the very first time today. I feel like im learning to walk all over again, and I guess i AM.
I have wanted to stilt for YEARS! Even since I went to burning man and saw people breakdancing on them! absoloutly amazing. I never believed anyone could do that.... So now i'v got my own stilts....
and feel so very alone.
I live up in whistler where i think i am one of 2 people in town here who would even think about getting up on a pair.
(everyone else seems to like plumiting down steep hills on sticks, not walking on them... sigh)

If anyone can give me any sort of tips or suggestions...
i mean is a really long pole going to help all that much with balance? or is it more for just leaning on?
what about weight distrabution?

anywho. I am just really excited about it I can't WAIT untill im up there and more comfortable and walking around.
I would love to come down to vancouver and check out your stilt events too.

New Stilting Workshop Starting Next Tuesday May16th...

I'm organizing another crew of stilt building the same as Neil P just did (thanks for all the help and ideas by the way Neil, Tammy and Casey) to help build our Critical Stilt Mass. Anyone who is interested give me a shout directly. This will be a cost only build (about $50 per set - depending on manterial costs). Wil probably take 2 weeks (Tuesday May23rd as well)

Stilting at Recompression

Any of youse guys coming to Recompression next weekend? If so, bring your stilts. It's not great terrain for it but I did a stilt building workshop there last year and (if the announcement ever gets posted) am inviting people to bring their stilts back for some practice and fun. Some of the people who built stilts haven't had much chance to get up and walking yet.

If the weather holds I'd like to find a spot outside to practice falling.
