Hi everyone,
I wanted to get my feelers out on the St. Louis area. My family and I will be moving there within the next few months. I'm looking for a tribal community in the area to get plugged into. Since I left Miami for Southern Illinois I've been deprived and dancing alone. I'm so stoked to move to a place where I can get plugged into a community again, and it's not just me and one other person!

I didn't want to announce this until I had it in writing from the venue. (The owner has been going nuts with graduation parties, weddings, etc. I spoke to him via cell but had issues actually sitting down with him until yesterday.) I now have the larger space for the Asharah workshop!! Registration for Pops, Locks and Tick Tocks on June 27th has been reopened!! We can accommodate EVERYONE!!!

You may register using Paypal OR you can pay at the door. If you choose the latter, please note that we will only accept cash at that time. The venue has an ATM on site, which is very convenient.

For information on the workshop, visit http://tribeayaka.com.

Update: Asharah Workshops and Show June 27th & 28th - St. Louis

Sought after for her concise instruction, Asharah teaches belly dance around the world. She is highly regarded for her emphasis on clean technique as well as the individual attention she pays each student in each of her classes and workshops. She believes in addressing each student as an individual, highlighting their strengths and identifying areas of improvement.

Asharah will bring the following workshops to St. Louis:

Saturday June 27th - 10 am until noon

Pops, Locks, and Tick Tocks: Tricks to Mechanize your Movement
Experience Level: Intermediate beginner and above.

Inspired by robots, experimental electronic music, and poppin’ and lockin’, Asharah has integrated mechanical movements into her expressive tribal fusion performances. In this workshop, Asharah will lead students through an intense warm up and then will show students how to break down traditional bellydance movements such as vertical hip figure-8s, shoulder rolls, torso undulations, turns, and arm waves into smaller and sharper parts to give your performances a robotic and creepy edge. After drilling these movements, she’ll teach a short combination that demonstrates how these movements can be used in a performance. She’ll also briefly discuss concepts of electronic music, how it is created, and how to listen to the nuances of music made by machines and computers.

Saturday June 27th - 1pm until 3pm

Dancing Your Demons: Dramatic Dance through Emotional Expression (This workshop is SOLD OUT at Tribal Fest 09!!)
Experience Level: Intermediate beginner and above.

Within each one of us is our true, instinctual self, and we often ignore or repress her (or him) in our everyday lives. Our instinctual self is not rational, and yet to dance to our fullest, we must acknowledge our instinct, acting upon it without second-guessing it and while still harnessing it for a clean and stage-worthy performance. Our instincts are raw, untamed and absolutely essential to a dancer who wishes to give a moving and expressive performance.

In this workshop, Asharah will lead students through physical exercises aimed at drawing out instinctual responses to music and other students in class. She will also explain her own emotional preparation process, giving guidelines and tips on how to be “in the moment” before you even take the stage. Students must leave their egos at the door, and judgmental or critical behavior will not be tolerated.

Sunday, June 28th - 10 am until noon

Progressive Raqs*: Technical Bellydance with a Geeky Twist
Experience Level: Intermediate beginner and above.

In this workshop, Asharah will teach some of her signature technical movements while emphasizing grace, fluidity, power, and presence. A self-described geek, she’ll explain the muscles and physiology behind each movement and how each movement can fit in to the larger picture of your dance. She’ll also talk about her sense of artistic and creative integrity, giving you advice and tips for pursuing your own uncompromising path as an artist and dancer. Asharah likes to push herself and her students physically and mentally, so come prepared with water and an open mind.

Registration is now open. Please visit: http://tribeayaka.com/Registration.htm

Reed has been belly dancing since 2004 so he knows how to work the sword. I have taken Reed's workshops and have seen him perform...he is incredible!! He will show you that a sword is more than something to balance. I will update the website soon with a detailed class description. http://tribeayaka.com

Nichelle Lawrence will be here as well to shoot the show. She will also be available for mini shoots (by appointment please). Nichelle has offered to set up a photo booth for your convenience. http://lifephotographybynichelle.com

If this isn't hawt enough, there will be FIRE!!!

I am so freakin' psyched!!! ((bounce, shimmy, bounce, shimmy, bounce!!))

Asharah's Performance Information - June 27th, 2009

The performance will be held at the ClubHouse Inn, 1970 Craig Road - Westport (Maryland Heights) on June 27th, 2009. What's SO terrific about this venue is that it's a couple hundred yards from the workshop location. If you are a guest at the Drury Inn (remember to inquire about the Tribe Ayaka discount!!) you need only to make a right out of the parking lot then a quick left. Voila!!

To get the party started, you're invited to arrive at the ClubHouse at 7:30pm to enjoy catered treats and an inexpensive cash bar (fully stocked). We have reserved most of the main floor AND the outside patio which is beautifully landscaped. Dance performances will begin at 8pm. Then there will be FIRE!!! (I have to feed my pyro appetite!)

If you are interested in performing in one or both segments of the show, please PM me for the deets. As you can imagine, there are special requirements to meet wrt fire tools, insurance, etc.

Hello everyone,
My name is Erin Roark and I recently moved to St. Louis and am looking into starting up some classes. I learned tribal style from Carolina Nerricio back in the 90's and have also been doing Indian dance (Odissi and Kalbelia) for the past 15 years. I have lived in India three times in order to study dance and I learned Kalbelia dance from Gulabi Sapera, the woman responsible for bringing this form to the stage as well as for creating an international following for this style. I am really interested in starting up regular classes as well as performing. If anyone has any suggestions for a venue, please feel free to contact me. Also, if there are only a handful of people interested in classes, I have a small space in my home where I would be happy to hold classes for 2 or 3 people. I am excited to get to know everyone in the dance community here in St. Louis! Thanks!! Erin
of their shows around the Chicago area. She began teaching under the
auspices of Grow in Motion, Gabrielle's studio in Forest Park, and at
the Pav YMCA, developing a student following, and becoming inspired to
deepen herself further as a dancer and a teacher. She developed and
now directs a tribal troupe, Smoke, and a student troupe, Gűlbahar,
rather than just mimicking movement.
One of the core objectives is to increase student awareness of the
connection among art, religion and politics in the near/middle east,

hey hey everyone,

just wanted to take a moment to say mel and myself are really looking forward to coming to St. Louis in June. we've been making a list of fun fun combinations to teach you all and much much more!! we will have a huge time!!
so, let's see, a few fun facts about mel and teresa... 1. we both started taking belly dance around the same time from our teacher, Suzanne Armetta who we both loved very much. Suzanne taught both cabaret and folkloric styles of belly dance. 2. Rakadu was formed around 97-98 as a tribal style belly dance company. 3. Both Mel and I have earned the right to call ourselves "cat ladies", not because we live in Lexington, home of UK Wildcats, but because between the 2 of us we have an unmentionable # of cats who allow us to live with them. 4. Rakadu's roadtrip food of choice are "Cheesy Poofs" washed down with a little Rockstar beverage. 5. we love Arrested Development!!

what else, mel?

We've had a few new members in here over the last several months and I'd just like to welcome them to the tribe.
so welcome all new members! Please feel free to post any topic or question about St. Louis Belly Dance.

Also I just want to remind everyone of something that I'm sure you are well aware of if you've been a member of tribe for a while or any other social networking or bulletin board site. Even though this is a public tribe, your words might end up going to places you would never think they would. Just please be aware of what you are saying on tribe and that anyone anywhere may be able to see what you have posted or it may go anywhere through word of mouth. And since the St. Louis belly dance community is pretty small (even though there are a lot of dancers here), things get around.

No one in here has said anything wrong and I'm not trying to admonish anyone for ANYTHING they've said. I just want you to be aware of this so that you aren't surprised when someone you don't think is on tribe says "I know what you said on tribe." I'm just trying to look out for you!

Morocco Workshop Weekend (IL) **POSTPONED**

It is with great regret that I must announce that the Feb 29th-March 2nd workshop/show weekend with Morocco has been postponed. As many of you know Morocco was the choreographer and cultural consultant for a major motion picture for Pathe Films (filmed in New York, Cairo, Casablanca and Rabat) and directed by Nabil Ayouche (the multiple-award-winning director of "Ali Zaoua").

The movie has scenes that need to be re-shot and location scheduling overlaps with our weekend. I totally understand that Morocco is required to be there and complete her work on this previous commitment.

Workshop participants and vendors will receive full refunds. Stay tuned to shimmychicago.com for a reschedule date!

I haven't been to Haifa's downtown since right after they opened. But I remember it felt like being at a Lebanese family wedding, with all generations. The dancer went on very late (like midnight) and then everybody danced, and the 'regulars' showed us how to do debke with them.

It was so fun! Is it still like that? Does anyone still perform there? I'm thinking field trip with my students if it's still like that!

$200 Buys A Lot in KY!

12 hours of instruction by Rachel Brice, Mardi Love, Zoe Jakes and Tobias (doing percussion instruction). $200!!!

I would LOVE to attend but have serious cash flow issues these days. I would need two companions to make this workshop possible. You would have to commit soon because this workshop will fill quickly. Also, you will have to be willing to travel with my emo dog. She's a sweet dog, but her last trip to the boarders was not a good one; I do not want to place her under those confined conditions any time soon.

The workshop is Sept 15th and 16th. I would like to leave on Friday so we could arrive in Lexington before dark, departing Lexington on Sunday after the last class.

Any takers?
********************************************
http://yogaandtheindigo.tribe.net/thread/3e9986ce-f96b-4f8c-91d3-e86e394df8dd

Teresa is having computer issues and wanted me to post the information here regarding this event:

Rachel, Mardi, Zoe and Tobias will each be teaching 3 hours. That's 12 hours of instruction in two days.

The order of classes will be: Rachel Sat. AM, Tobias Sat. P.M., Zoe Sun. AM, Mardi Sun. PM. Specific times will be provided as soon as Teresa's computer is up again.

$65 per class for early registration (received at least 7 days prior to the event)
$75 per class the week of the workshop or at the door (if space is available)

$200 all four classes early registration (received at least 7 days prior the the event)
$265 all four classes the week of the workshop or at the door (if space available)

You can register for these classes by paypaling the funds to info@meccadance.com. Make sure to put which class or package you are paying for in the comment section. You can also send a check to Mecca Dance 451 Chair Ave. Suite B Lexington, KY 40508

Wanted to share a few comments about the recently brought up issue about rates here:

"Do you think it would be a good idea to post something
on the STLBD web site...maybe just the average accepted
minimum for things like private parties and restaurant
shows?" (This would be an excellent idea!)

"This is a good idea for the St. Louis area. I'd like to dance in restaurants as well but, alas, getting rates has been sort of difficult. I guess the others want to keep this secret. I'd only like to know because, at the very least, I don't want to rip myself off by undercutting which could have a dire effect on myself and for other dancers. "

"What happens when we find out someone is using that public price list to undercut other dancers in the area? I know of dance companies in the area that couldn't even list their events on their website because other dancers would call the event and offer to do it cheaper. How annoying".

General consensus is that standardizing rates are a good thing and everyone actually wants to be on the same page. There is also a desire for a price increase, yes INCREASE!

A few things about undercutters:
If we standardize our rates, stick to them, and still have a few undercutters, they will cut themselves out. How? They will have to work twice as hard to get the same amount of money, will get tired and frustrated, the quality of their work will diminish, and they will quit-saying that "people" don't appreciate all of the hard work that goes into performing. This is where the saying "You get what you pay for" will become self evident.

Undercutters generally fight for the "bargain basement" and if they want it they can have it. In business, you never fight for the bargain basement. You can be the lowest in price, but the problem with that is that someone will always bid under you. While fighting over who can be lowest, the better, higher paying jobs come along and someone else will get them.

The yoga thread in Great Plains BD started me thinking. Do any of you do yoga? What kind do you prefer and where do you go? I'm doing hatha yoga at the Y, but I'm always interested in hearing info on other yoga studios, just to stay informed.

An Evening of Middle Eastern Bellydance in Belleville!

Hi guys, it's me, Lauren! I *just* found out we had a tribe of our own -- cool!

My student show is coming up August 18 & 19. This is more of a recital, in a theater, than a hafla (no food, but cushy chairs and a good view of the stage!)

Performers will include:

- Me! (and daughter Jasmine. For those who watched her grow up, she's 20 now!)
- Hips Afire! Bellydancers (my repertory group) in group dances (including wings & sword!) and solos
- Group student numbers by the beginner & intermediate classes.
- The Weird Kids alternative class, and their instructor Laura

Saturday evening features special guests:
- Salwa of Aalim's Dance Company
- Andrea of Simone's 7th Veil
...and more!

Sunday matinee special guests:
- Diana of DeWolf Studios (former director of Simone's)
- Radhiya Taj and her tribal group
- Nandi
- Nisaa and Madrasat Nisaa

The location is the Southwestern Illinois College theater. MetroLink lets you off right in the parking lot, and the show will only be about 2 hours so you'll be able to get home safely.

*****Get your tickets in advance, last year's show sold out and we had to turn people away at the door *****

So, like I mentioned in the other post I might start making some costumes over the summer. Not for sure or anything, but just in case it would be nice to know what people would want, and what sizes you are and such. Then I can just make random costumes and if ya want them then you can buy them or if you don't i'm sure some lovely customer on ebay is bound to fit into it...

=o) It would basically have to be made with trims and things I can either order online for cheap or buy at walmart...because Kirksville has a lack of good craft stores (or any stores really)

With that said... anyone have any feathers or Native American fabric that would match a beaded hair thing I have (it's white turquoise and red...might have some orange or yellow too, i'll have to look)? I have these turquoise pants that i am wearing in my profile pic, and I recently found this leather beaded hair thing (my mom gave it to me, her side of the family is part cherokee) and I was thinking of making a native american-inspired costume...
