gravel and sand

Part of the goo that holds it all together. Got the first load of gravel yesterday afternoon for the foundation of the metal shop building/garage. It is a modest affair, being 20x20 feet, but it will serve well as a place to work from and store building supplies as the building of the home progresses. As the rainy season is fast approaching i hope to get the foundation poured and building up in next two weeks.
I prefer mixing and pouring my own concrete as I never have been enthused about concrete trucks crashing around, and the drivers, while sometimes helpful, are impatient to dump the load and go. I don't like being rushed in that manner-makes for mistakes and a bad job. Besides, the cost for the small amount of concrete I need would be ridiculous.
I still have not decided whether to pour a perimeter foundation for the house or pour foot pads with cast piers on top-similar to pier blocks. So...for now, off to move some firewood and start building forms. It begins.

just make sure that you get your concrete mixed n poured quick enough or you will wind up with cold cracks (i think that the right term) in your floor

Quick is not a problem. I am taking a day and "vanishing" so i can be left alone to pour the foundation. Borrowed a nice older mixer from a friend. Have a bit or rain due for next three days, but clear again after that.
