  • I'm not female, I was just wondering something.
Have you thought at all about permaculture or just canned food? I honestly don't mean to offend you or anything. I suppose with your training thought you might be the kind that could walk into a desert with a knife and come out with new clothes and a few extra pounds.

I also have raised bed gardens, and, I am beginning to look at a 40 acre area in Northern Arizona, to build a shelter of rock and concrete.
You are right,....... I can live off the desert,....... and easily.
I used to teach certain classes in the desert survival areas as well.
In Special Forces, we had to go out for a week with just a knife and a compass and survive. Luckily for me, I was educated in a lot of the plants that are edible and have medicinal value. (comes from having a Cherokee Mother!)
Not sure about gaining the pounds though, most of the desert critters are pure protein and not a lot of fat/carbs.
But ,I can make a heck of a drink from prickly pear cacti, as well as really nice preserves!
I never cared for eating those cattails though!
      YUCK!

Now, I did spend well over the aforementioned amount on those canned goods....
My 1st trip was $225.00, the 2nd one was $453.00......!
        $678.00 total on foods!!!
Then there was the 2 cases of T.P., = 192 rolls of wondefulness!
Then, it was off to get additional items for solar power and comfort.
I do NOT believe in JUST surviving.....
I believe in surviving in comfort!
No sense in going off and becoming a REFUGEE!
I'm NOT Mad Max, and this ain't NO THUNDERDOME!
        Not yet anyway!
Check back in about 2-3 months and I'll see what has taken place, and revise that!

    • At the present time we are now considering 6-8 greenhouses, with raised beds.
Due to the elevation and the cooler temps, we are considering an underground, forced warm air manifold system to keep the plants from freezing.
I am also in contact with local county ag extension agents regarding varied types of plants that will grow and proliferate in the area.
So far, apple trees seem to be one of the best!
Strangely enough, there are NO pine trees, NO pinon trees. Only 1 type, juniper.
But they are doing really well in that area.
Even the local javelinas seem to exist ok on the berries.
I'd hate to taste the meat from one though, probably 100% gin flavor!
The plan is to have several gardens and tree groves, with a variety of fruits and nuts.
Recent temps dropped to a low of 28, and the humidity was at 76%.
The winds average 25-35 mph, but nat'l weather service records shows high wind speeds of up to 65-70.
Now, it would be great to find some one with homesteading experience, or at least the ability to can foods!
I have a dehydrator with 12 racks, and a vacuum sealer unit already and have put them to good use.

      • Recently, I took a group of people out to the desert, and in one afternoon they learned where to get water, find needles and thread, soap, and assorted other items.
I was amazed at the amount of misinformation people get from watching tv!
I watched as people tried to find water inside a barrel cactus.
        Now that was funny.
I did stop them before they attempted to drink any of the slime, as they'd soon vomit ,and then become severely dehydrated!
Not what you want out in the desert.
1 individual from New York, got quite thirsty, and on the way back into town asked that we stop a a convenience store.
        We did.
        He gorged himself on gatorade.
Then we had him transferred from there by ambulance to the nearest hospital.
"IF" you get that thirsty, you need to drink water only, and slowly, not gulp it down, and NOT ice cold!
The gatorade was full of electrolytes, which can be good or bad.
The additional influx of sodium, suddenly caused his system to shut down and he went into shock!
A valuable lesson, that nearly cost that man his life!
Some people will just NOT listen!

Just completed work on and tested a LARGE solar stove/cooker unit, mirrored interior, holds a roaster size pan, or 2-3 smaller ones at once....
Also, completed: a 4-2 liter bottle, "solis", water purifier unit.
Now working on a solar, water tank heating system, and a water recycling unit, to use non-sewage waste water, for re-use to water plants and trees.
Building framing sets for large raised beds for gardens, from 2 x 12 lumber.
    Ordering 4-6, 10ft x 12ft greenhouses as well.
To build a home, that is totally self reliant, off the grid, and out of harm's way ,so to speak.
    Sound interesting?
I am also having satellite hook-up for internet services, and have multiple radio and cell phone communications in place.
