Waltz the night away in a beautiful candlelit ballroom with the San Francisco Bay Area’s most glamorous Undead at the 16th Annual Le Bal des Vampires.

Suggested costume is evening dress of the century and country of your “rebirth.” This may include dress uniform, period costume (authentic or fantasy), vintage attire, or modern evening dress. There is no dress code for the ball (We certainly don’t expect Spike to attend in black tie!), but you will see some of the most gorgeous and creative costumes of the social season at Le Bal des Vampires.

This year there will once again be simultaneous dancing on two separate floors:

Our band in the elegant upstairs ballroom is the stylish but always dashing chamber ensemble Bangers & Mash. As usual, haunting waltzes dominate the program, but the evening will feature a variety of dance music from across the centuries – from 18th century Baroque contredanses to 19th century Victorian rotary and Viennese waltzes, polkas, and mazurkas; to elegant early 20th century tangos, blues, and fox trots and even some classic rock and roll Swing. Please note that the band’s first dance set will start at 7:45 pm sharp – 15 minutes earlier than usual. The dance sets will be unusually long, even by Bangers & Mash’s high standards, so if you do plan to dance, please be certain to wear shoes or boots you can actually dance in.

For those preferring a more modern style of dance music and free-style dancing, join us downstairs in Le Bal des Vampires’ Dracula’s Daughter’s Discotheque for a wonderfully varied repertoire of music to stir the blood and spirit from 6:30 p.m. to Midnight. Hosted by our principal DJ, Dark Moon, the disco also features a no-host (cash) bar and light refreshments for our mortal guests.

Our half-time show in the ballroom is a performance by the celebrated Le Theatre des Vampires. Not recommended for the faint of heart but highly recommended for fans of the genre.

For driving directions, public transit options, and costume tips and photo links, please see the ball website at http://www.peers.org/vamp09.html

If you have any questions, please email peers@peers.org or call (510) 522-1731

Swing Goth lands in the East Bay on 7/12

Lessons start at 7pm, dance starts at 8pm.

Blakes serves dinner, so feel free to stop by early to grab a bite, or plan to grab a bite after lessons. If we support the venue, they continue to have us! :-)

Swing Goth is what happens when rock-a-billy meets goth, and is peppered with a little blues, waltzing and a healthy portion of dirty dancing... all to modern music.

For some time now people have been asking when we're going to put on an event in The East Bay. Well, we've been trying. This venue's too chic, that venue's too small, this venue wants too much of a guarantee, the other venue's booked solid... then I was smacked in the forehead with the solution: Blakes in Berkeley (www.blakesontelegraph.com/)!

But, we only get two chances to make a first impression: July 12th and Aug 23rd. Yes, that's on SUNDAY. Yes, it's in the EAST BAY.

Dance lessons start at 7pm and focus on basic partner dancing based on Jitterbug, but taught with modern music in mind. Open dance starts at 8pm.

If you haven't heard of us before, we know we call it Swing Goth, but it's not JUST swing, and we don't limit it to Goth either. They'll be waltzes and slower numbers for blues dancing and we play everything from The Killers to Leonard Cohen.

You can read more about us here: www.examiner.com/x-8398-SF...to-Tuesday

and here: blogs.sfweekly.com/shookdow...oth_a.php

Dance lessons are $5
Admission to the dance is free for the first month!

The problem with press is you don't get to write the article yourself. We dance to The Killers and The Faint as easily as Siouxie, and I teach Jitterbug based lessons instead of Lindy. But... oh well. :-)
ABOUT TELEKINESIS: Widely regarded as one of LA’s best & weirdest stageshows, Telekinesis is a monthly cabaret featuring a rotating cast of the artists, musicians, drag performers, and dancers who define the underground art and nightlife scene in Los Angeles. The brainchild of pop singer and drag superstar JerBer Jones, Telekinesis happens the first Tuesday of every month at Casita del Campo’s Cavern Club Theater in Silverlake. The consistently sold-out shows have a musical-variety format built around a different original narrative theme each month – past themes have included a polygamist family dealing with a rebellious sister-wife and a “March of Dames” telethon to raise money for underprivileged trannies. Tickets and information about upcoming shows can be found at www.robbied.com.

Secret Agents' Ball with Sara & Swingtime - Saturday, June 6

This is not a Swing Goth event but we'll have both Swing and Waltz dancers and a number of Goths in attendance. The ball is a kind of Avengers/Prisoner cross-over homage. Here's our latest ball write-up:

THE SECRET AGENTS’ BALL
Saturday, June 6, 2009
Location: San Mateo Masonic Temple Ballroom
100 N. Ellsworth Avenue (at Tilton), San Mateo, CA 94401
Doors Open: 6:45 p.m.
Dance Lesson: 7:00 p.m.
Dancing begins: 8:00 p.m.
Band: Sara & Swingtime
Advance Tickets: $15.00 (by May 30, 2009)
Tickets: $20.00 at the door
Ball website: http://www.peers.org/secret.html

Swinging on the Riviera one day,
And laying in a Bombay alley next day.
You let the wrong word slip
Through kissing persuasive lips,
Odds are you won’t live to see tomorrow.

Secret Agent Man! Secret Agent Man!
They’ve given you a number
And taken away your name!

Don’t miss the most swinging ball of the season for those spies who live a life of danger and romance. Secret agents, femme fatales, megalomaniac villains and innocent bystanders are all invited to this musical tribute to the Cold War Secret Agent.

Sara & Swingtime play a varied and always suspenseful evening of vintage ballroom dance music, hot Swing, and cool blues, including a few secret agent movie song classics. Dance East Coast Swing and Lindy Hop, elegant fox trots, blues fox trot, and tango, the cha-cha and rumba, the night club two-step, and a number of truly haunting waltzes.

Suggested attire is vintage or modern evening dress or 1940’s through 60’s costume (from early Hitchcock to “The Avengers.”). Day dress is always perfectly acceptable for you innocent bystander types who have just wandered into the adventure and have, perhaps, seen too much for your own good! (Remember “The Man Who Knew Too Much”?!). In deference to Mrs. Peel’s impeccable fashion sense, the ladies may choose to adopt either traditional evening dress or a trouser suit!

There will be a no host (cash) bar, and a light snack buffet (your potluck contributions are very welcome! Even 00 operatives have to eat!). At intermission there will be musical and dance performances by the famous Danse Libre and notorious PEERS Flying CirCUS and dance music provided by our mystery DJ.

To order advance tickets for the ball, please send a check for $15.00 each to PEERS at 2144 B Buena Vista Avenue, Alameda, CA 94501. To order tickets online via PayPal, go to the ball site at http://www.peers.org/secret.html and click on the PayPal icon for instructions. The deadline for advance ticket purchases is Saturday, May 30. Tickets will be $20.00 at the door.

If you have any questions, please email peers@peers.org or call (510) 522-1731.

Be seeing you.

Bowie Ball!

Under siege by the enemies of Music and Fun, and threatening to be closed, Suffragette City Music Hall reaches out across the dimensions to its terrestrial sister club, Great American Music Hall for one night only!

Featured performers are: Barry Syska's Fantasy Orchestra (http://www.myspace.com/barrysyska) and 5 Cent Coffee (http://www.myspace.com/fivecentcoffee) and DJ MzSamantha (Clockwork, The Box). And of course the key ingredient is you, as we all come together for BOWIE BALL!!!

You might have heard of Bowie.

In the 60's he was Davey Jones, a potential British Invader who's name was robbed from him by a Monkey. Still, who can forget The Laughing Gnome?

In the 70's he was Major Tom, The Man Who Fell to Earth and Sold the World, Ziggy Stardust, The Diamond Dog, and The Thin White Duke...

In the 80's he rose from the Ashes, turned into a vampire, was promoted from Duke to King (of the goblins - talk about Scary Monsters!), fell into Modern Love with a China Girl, and we all took shelter Underground as The World Fell Down…

In the 90's he dawned a White Tie, took a step Outside, and became an Earthling.

This is our chance to celebrate EVERYTHING Bowie. All in one night.

It promises to be an event to remember! Come in costume, come to spectate, come to dance, but you'll regret it if you don't come.

Dance lessons for "Absolute Beginners" from 8:30-9:45 consist of two rotations and three instructors teaching Swing, Waltz and Blues dancing. In these lessons you'll learn the basics required to fully participate in the Ball to follow.

$15 in advance, $20 at the door
Buy your tickets now to make sure you get one!

That's right, you read it right, there WILL be a next time. More information will be forthcoming. In the meantime, I hope some of you can join us for our bi-monthly night at El Rio! The best way to stay up to date on all of this is to keep your eyes on this Tribe. Feel free to invite friends to join!

In the meantime, I wanted to thank the 200+ people who came! You're the reason I do this. Seriously. We get the BEST people at our events. From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank you all!

The playlist will be posted here momentarily, and photos will be up soon. You can hear the night here: http://cerebrum.dnalounge.com:8001/audio/2009/04-30-00000.m3u The music starts about 5:40 in.

This was the first time I tried to put on an event this large and I want to acknowledge a mistake and solicit advice. First the mistake. Lee Presson went on MUCH later than I wanted them to. I take full responsibility for this faux pas. I tried to pack too much into one night. In the future there will be two bands at most. It won't happen again.

And now, I ask for your feedback. Anything you want more of, less of? Done differently? I won't necessarily adopt every suggestion, but I WILL seriously consider all feedback provided.

Don't just tell me about it though. Feel free to tell the world. We have a listing on Yelp. Go ahead and review us here: http://www.yelp.com/biz/swing-goth-san-francisco?rpp=40&sort_by=date_desc

We did all this while being up against Ladytron/The Faint AND Swing Flu. It's only going to get better from here on!

Yours on and off the dance floor,
Brian

Frankie manning passed away today. In the middle of National Dance week. He was arguably the founder of Lindy Hop. He was still traveling the country teaching the dance a few months before he passed. The world has lost an innovator. Let his week long wake continue in every dance we do.

Those who know me know I don't really like the footwork for the Lindy Hop, but I do like the moves from it and many of the florishes, and everything else that I do love so very very much couldn't exist without what he did. I morn his passing.

Our Anniversary April 30th and International Dance Week

I just wanted to take a moment to urge everyone who's ever shown any interest in this group to attend our anniversary. I'm for serious. Why? Because it's both more swing and more goth than we ever have been, AND it's @ DNA Lounge, and I've done every thing that I can to make sure that this going to be an event to remember.

Lee Presson (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mTbroDBpeh8&feature=related) is a phenomenal performer, and we're really blessed to have such an extraordinary band based out of the Bay Area (and playing our anniversary). Likewise, The Deephearted (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H26eja-2F-A) is a fledgling goth band with phenomenal promise. This is your chance to say you saw (and maybe even swing danced to) them when...

Then there's the burlesque, I've selected some of my favorite dancers in the Bay Area. Everyone I asked has said yes and is on the bill (aside from one who's currently under doctors orders not to perform, but will be there in support). We have a post-apocalypse belly dance to kick off the event at 7:50, and an performance that's going to need 5 people just to clean up afterward to end of the night.

This is going to be fun!!

Bring a date, bring friends, come alone. It doesn't matter. Heck, if you don't believe me, watch the event at home on DNA Lounge's webcast until you can't help but join us.

Don't forget, lessons start promptly at 8pm. (And why on earth would you run the risk of missing the burlesque before the lessons?)

Yours on and off the floor,
Brian
Singles and Swingers?

Oh my, that title might have gotten your hopes up...

As a lovely, prowling woman of reasonable dancing ability, I'm curious if this is the kind of event where I'll get to dance with someone even if I don't club my own date over the head and drag him there. :-)

Most of the boys I know don't dance. I'm looking to solve that.

I've been swing dancing for years in Santa Cruz, under a class format with forced rotations during the learning portion of the evening, and dancer's choice partnering for the "dance jam" part of the evening. I like this, because it gives me a feel for everyone's skill and outgoingness level before the dance floor opens for the night and all the shy kids start holding up the walls.

Is Swing Goth a similar format, or will I have to rustle up my own companion for the evening if I want to do any dancing?

What's the gender balance like?

Curious, scheming, and longing,
- Alice

You may have heard about the latest sensation, people all over SF are partner dancing to dark modern music... well... if the 60's taught us nothing, it's that every hip dancing party ends up on the beach... in this case, Santa Cruz!

Brian Gardner of Swing Goth - SF comes to The Blue Lagoon for one night only to teach you how to turns, twirl and dip to Siouxie, The Cure, Sisters of Mercy and more! Sometimes people think partner dancing to goth music is thinking outside the box... well... we're proving them wrong! ;-)

(Read about Swing Goth here: blogs.sfweekly.com/shookdow...oth_a.php - please note, Swing Goth SF is preempted this week for Inauguration, but we'll be back up each and every other Tuesday...)

9pm lesson $5
10pm music begins (NO COVER)

First off, thank you all for being part of this long strange journey. We're about to enter 2 years (we started in April 2007) of partner dancing to dark modern music and that's HUGE!

Next, a reminder that we are preempted tonight. If you want to join us, we'll be partying with the Young Democrats and other progressive youths @ Supperclub (not to be confused with where we used to hold our nights, although it often is).

Secondly, if you're not yet aware, we were written up in SF Weekly (http://blogs.sfweekly.com/shookdown/2009/01/club_night_review_swing_goth_a.php). I've kept it kind of on the DL because we're dark this week, and I didn't want to feed into the buzz too much, just to have people come for the first time on the one night we don't exist.

FINALLY, we're booking live bands starting in February. Not every night, but many nights. Feel free to check it out here: http://www.google.com/calendar/render?tab=mc

Best,
Brian - who tries to limit the amount of email you get while making sure you stay informed

PS- If anyone wants 4 day VIP passes to Edwardian Ball, I bought a few extras thinking it would sell out. I'll give you all four nights for the price of 2!

"Baby Dancers" meaning of course that I have only had a couple of swing dance lessons.

Swinging in the Rain and Obama-Rama in early October

Hey gang,

Two things of note coming up in early October, but before I get to them, I wanted to give you all an advanced heads up. There's going to be something a little extra special for the last Tuesday in October! Now, on to the early October stuff that you might find appealing.

1- Swinging in the Rain
I did some reconnaissance over on the PEERS tribe and apparently the band WILL be playing swing circa 1920. Which means that it will be more blues and lindy hop than jitterbug. There will also be waltzes and polkas and such. More information is @ PEERS.org and sample songs from the band are on their MySpace page: http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=211639599
This just in, Lee Presson (of Lee Presson and the Nails) will be DJing between the band's sets)

2- Obama-Rama
This is a fundraiser for Obama, but it features several burlesque performers and a set by Lee Presson and the Nails, so they'll be some swing dancing for sure. It's at The Rickshaw Stop on the 9th of October (from 8-11ish). This should be a blast, and for a good cause!

Videography - SNAFU

Okay, so I got mugged last week and that's thrown a wrench in all of the glorious plans. I wasn't even supposed to be out until midweek, so Alexis was going to be posting this, but I out-healed even myself and got released early. I managed to stop her from writing it just as she was sitting down to do it.

Anyway, I'm fine. I'll be there tomorrow. The reporter, however, won't be. I had to cancel the videographing because:

1- I didn't think I'd be there.
2- Even if I was I knew I wouldn't be able to teach or dance
3- Even if I was I knew I'd have a black eye and some facial scars

I reiterate, I'm fine.

I'm a bit torn about what to do. On other sites (I couldn't post it on Tribe because Tribe was down) I promoted this as (1.5 Year Anniversary - 15 Minutes of Fame). This is actually our 1.5 year anniversary, but the only reason to celebrate was because we were also getting 15 minutes of fame... Kit was going to guest DJ maybe, but I had to call him to confirm, and I didn't get to do that so this is the first he's hearing about my desire for him to be there as well...

Anyway. I'll be there. People will be there. We'll be dancing and carousing and Kit might be DJing part of the night. The SF Chronicle however will be rescheduled to later in the month or next month as dictated by her schedule.

I'm sorry for the late notice, there was a lot of confusion about exactly what had happened, what was happening, and what was going to happen. All beyond my control.

See you soon!
Brian

Hey All,

A videographer from the SF Chronicle emailed me last night and asked if she could come do a video of our event next Tuesday (the 9th). After talking to the people present in class, I replied that the following Tuesday (the 16th) might be better. More information as it becomes available.
Help watch the door and get compensated "well!"

Hi all,

You probably just read the event announcement for Embrace this Saturday the 16th, well it turns our our door person can't make it this month, so I need volunteers to cover the door. It's a really simple, although potentially boring job. If you're willing to volunteer an hour of your time, please email me directly and include which hours you would be available to help out for.

In return you will get in for free, a free drink (thus the "well" in the subject - feel free to reference previous conversation between Catriona and I wherein I explain to the Scot what a "well" drink is), and free lessons if you want them (or if you don't, I'll try to get you a second drink)! That's $16 worth of compensation. Plus you can be part of the event and meet people as they come in! Yay!

Best,
Brian

New moves in September!!!

School''s back in session!

September's 7-8 class will be a "show and tell" structure. Which means Alexis and I will come with new moves to teach you, but we don't really want to teach them. We want you all to step forward and teach each other! Ideally everyone comes with a new move that they've learned from the internet, or from watching other people, but even if you don't have a move to teach, feel free to come along. Alexis and I will be there to support and facilitate.

Pricing structure: $2 if you come with a move to teach / $5 if you come just to learn (which is fine!)

As always beginner lessons in basic partner dancing will be from 8-9 and a free open dance will be from 9-12 (or later if everyone's still dancing!)

I hope to see you all out there!

Best,

Meet Swing Manifesto

So, I'm looking for input on this. It kind of hit me in a spurt of inspiration at Death Guild on Monday, and I wrote it down and have been editing it for a while. Any thoughts?

Like cats, if you expect us to be one thing, we'll probably be the other. Like dogs we will never tire of playing together. So, if you look at us with preconceptions, our stereo may not play your type, but if you don't adhere to them, than you're ours.

What we do is not strictly "swing" and the music we play is not limited to "goth." But what is swing and what was goth? In a world where dance and music evolve through the decades, how is there only one answer to that quandary? And why should we be strict about or limited by anything? Both swing and goth flew in the face of convention, so to confine ourselves and conformity wouldn't be true to either!

If you're willing to look beyond the semantics, the only question that matters is, "Would you care to dance?"

Why "Partner Dancing with a Darker Twinge?"

I was just asked something that I wanted to involve everyone in. Let me know if I'm off-base. To paraphrase and reference Princess Bride, the question was, "Your flyer's say 'twinge,' I don't think that word means what you think it means."

To save you the effort, according to web dictionary searches, what twinge means is this:

> A pinch; a tweak; a twitch; A sudden sharp pain; a darting local pain of momentary continuance; as, a twinge in the arm or side; To pull with a twitch; to pinch; to tweak
> prick: cause a stinging pain; "The needle pricked his skin"
> feel a sudden sharp, local pain
> pang: a sudden sharp feeling; "pangs of regret"; "she felt a stab of excitement"; "twinges of conscience"

My question to everyone is, does this fit for you? Choose your answer now, and remember it. Then continue reading for the illustrative story, and my reason for going with it. Then respond or don't respond as you like...

So... back in the day last year, our first flyers read, "Partner Dancing with a darker tinge." In part because I liked the word tinge. Also, what we were doing was a deeper "shade" of partner dancing.

When designing our second flyer, Jay (who can be quite obstinate as those who know him and love him can attest) changed the word to "twinge." He insists to this day that it was an intentional change, and not a typo. I am prone to believe him, in part because of the genius of the device. No matter it's origins, he convinced me to stick with it, and I'm still prone to, but I am open to other opinions. Here's why it's still on our flyer....

What we are doing is partner dancing with a darker "tweak," or a "twist." Indeed, some traditionalists may feel a sharp local pain at the thought of what we are doing. Many dancers still insist that what we do isn't possible or right. So, "twinge" is an artful way to acknowledge that and it makes people think and question. It's not a word that gets used often, and it's such a lovely word.

Sure, sometimes they think we've done it wrong, or unintentionally as the poor innocent soul whose question has become the topic of bulletin posts on three different sites did, but that's part of the point.... because they've thought about it.... and it's a textual representation of what we do to partner dancing. We may even be twinging (or tweaking) the literal meaning of the word twinge...

So... is it bad? Should we keep it? Should we go back to "tinge?"

Thoughts? Opinions?

(This message cross posted on our MySpace page - myspace.com/swinggoth - and our Facebook group - http://www.facebook.com/topic.php?topic=5170&uid=2313526820#/group.php?gid=2313526820)

T-Shirts on order - UPDATE

If you want to place a reservation now, let me know. It's important to me to have a variety of styles available, but that means that some shirt/size combination's are having a print run of 1. So, failure to pre-order might mean we run out of the style you want in your size if you don't let me know in advance. Unless specified before Monday, all shirts will be black. I mean, like, of course, right?

Hopefully everything will be finalized on Monday, and the shirts will be available in time for Embrace, but I'll know more on Monday.

Oddly enough, the requested previously requested styles are the exact same that I (with the help of my fashion consultants) came up with! This is amazing, it means that given 50+ options in each style of shirt, we all choose the same ones. Go team!

So far I have the following pre-orders:
Mariah - M women's tank
Nick - XS Mens/Unisex T
James- M Men's/Unisex T
Brian- M Men's Leisure (x2)

Prices on the shirts may not be uniform as they will be based on the orriginal price of the shirt + fees for the printing. The range (still subject to changes) will probably be from $25 for a tank or T to $30 for the Mens Leisure and $40 for the Hoodies.

The method for printing will be dye replacement, where they actually extract the original dye and replace it with the new color, so the shirt won't have raised crap that comes off in the wash like a lot of concert T-shirts do. It will be as if the shirt was made with the logo and image on it. I believe all shirts are 100% cotton, and (because I'm green like that) the unisex shirts will be organic.

Lindy Hop in July!!

Hello all, Sue Nelson (who many of you know from the early days of our organization will be returning to teach lesson in Lindy Hop from 7-8pm. The lessons will be $5 each for drop-ins or $15 for the month (there's 5 Tuesday's this month, so that's quite a bargain!). I hope to see some old faces in July, and fully expect to see several new ones! Because of the building nature of Lindy Hop, attendance to multiple classes is highly recommended, but not required.

If you've been out of action for a while, we get 20-30 people pretty consistently every Tuesday night these days, and I've been pre-burning play lists full of various styles and genres. Plus, we have a 50 page request by artist and type of dance, so if you want to hear a particular song, we can get it on! :-)

If you have any questions, or want to state your intent to come, feel free to respond to me personally, or below!

June 3rd - Monkey's Invade Julie's!

That's right... in addition to Catriona's triumphant return, the debut of our lessons in how to dance to slow, grindy and swirly moder music, and a Nick Cave Tribute night, Julie's is being invaded by Monkey's this week. Drunken Monkey's!

I talked to Brian last night and the two Brian's agree that failing any other place to gather while things get worked out with Annie's, we should converge on Julie's. So, it's not an official Drunken Monkey, but it means Swing Goth and Drunken Monkey will once again be together in the same club (for a limited time only)!

And, if there's people there drinking, Julie's will stay open serving! :-)

Door Volunteers

Howdy folks!

So, I thought as of the middle of the week that I had door covered, but the person who was going to do the whole night just backed out because I can't guarantee him enough money. So, we fall back to my original plan, which I had put on the back-burner because I thought I had it handled... which is: Tomas Diablo's wife Sandra works the door most of the night and we give her breaks and fill in with volunteers.

If you volunteer for a shift, of course I'll wave the cover charge.

We need 4-6 people to work door for 30 minute shifts, or couple really enthusiastic soles to work multiple 30 minute shifts from 8-2am. Don't want to pay a $5 cover? Want to help out? Let me know, reply below!

Thanks,
Brian

PS- Working door shouldn't be too hard. You're not going to be dancing all night anyway, and you might as well hang out and talk at the door rather than the bar. Plus, if we're doing really well, George or I might throw in some free drinks.

Pre-Order T-Shirts

So... we can get T-Shirts. Really high quality T-shirts (American Apparel - 100% Cotton) , where the ink is a part of the garment and won't fade, and isn't a raised image or anything. (They actually remove the die in the shirt and replace it with the ink of the design.) We will be able to get all of the detail Matt and Ragani put into the design on good quality material.

BUT, they're not going to be cheap. $25 (or $15 if you provide a shirt you want printed on - see below).

If you order in advance, I can custom order shirts for people, so if you want a ladies T or Spaghetti Strings, I can order that. I can also order specific color shirts (grey, blue, black, red etc). I need to know that at least 15 people will buy them before going to print. The advantage to you is that you get exactly what you want!

Here's what the shirts might look like. I'm open to suggestions, and if you're ordering a specific style and size (you can choose anything cotton from American Apparel - http://americanapparel.net/wholesaleresources/catalog/men.html or provide your own 100% Cotton shirt from thrifting or what-have-you).

FRONT: Swing Goth logo with the skulls as seen on the back of the current flyer. This image will be up in the right side where emblems normally are.

BACK: Pretty much the front of the current flyer minus all the text. So the top will read, "Swing Goth," with the sub-heading, "Partner Dancing with a darker twinge," and the bulk of the back will be the illustration.

The first feelers that I put out said that people wanted high end. I could do lower end for less, but it would be a typical print that might or might not fade, some of the details would be lost, the T-Shirt wouldn't be as soft... etc etc.

If you want a T-Shirt please place your order below. Once I get 10-15 and have everyone's shirt selections, I'll go to press.

Name the Saturday

So, we should probably have a name for the Saturday event... make it something special, you know...

I've come up with a couple:

Sway
Shake and Sway
Ephotic Sway
Ephotic Trimmers
Cimmerian Sway
Cimmerian Shake
...

Any thought from the peanut gallery?

Lifts and dips lessons start in May!

I'm on my way back from coachella. Had a couple long conversations with Matt and Cat (and my mind blown by Love and Rockets). Here's tv skinny. We'll be starting lifts and dips next week. The price for these lessons will be $5 (or $15 for the whole month). Starting in June, I'll be trying to bring in the best instructors from the Bay Area dance community to do month long stints teaching the dance that they know best. I'll be working with those instructors to make the lessons unquely tailored to our venue.

Beginners lessons will continue to be from 8-9, but will startbeing more prompt. The supplimental (sometimes advanced) lessons will be from7-8.

Lifts and dips will work best if you have a partner to work with. If you want to take the class and don't know who to partner up with, just PM me and I'll try to facilitate, or post here! :-)

So, we got the great dancing video threads. I'm putting together tonight's play list, and I've come across some real gems that I believe should be Swing Goth Anthems. I mean sure there's Voltaire's, "When You're Evil," and the old standard, "Violent Love." But I'm talking about real hidden gems. Some of you have shared some with me privately. Anyone want to post some here in public? List the song, and why (in your mind) it's a swing goth anthem. I'll start....

I just got off the phone with Lee Presson

He thinks it's great all the things "us kids" are doing! :-)

I thanked him for his support, and expressed my disappointment that I wasn't able to see him while he was in town last month. "Well," he said, "That's just fine. Because I'll be back in town to play the PEERS Ball, March 3rd. It's got a Chicago theme, and we'll be doing all sorts of numbers we've never done before and we might never do again."

Let me just tell you, OMG. For those of you who are not aware, Lee plays Poe at the Dickens Faire every year, and he's a fantastic improv character actor. For those of you who are not aware, PEERS is an historical re-enactment dance society. Everyone comes dressed in costume and does period dances. The thought of LPN playing a Chicago themed PEERS night is perfect.

"Well, I'm looking forward to that Lee, but I gotta tell you it was rough on me missing one of your shows. Randy told me you played Sing, Sing, Sing back-to-back with Hot for Teacher, and he danced so hard you almost killed him."

"Oh yeah, we normally throw Minnie the Moocher in there to give people a bit of a breather, but we were running short on time. You tell Randy Lee said, almost isn't good enough."

So, you heard it hear folks. May 3rd, it's Chicago gangster theme, and Lee Presson intends to carry out a mafia hit by making his audience dance so hard they bite it.

More Info here: www.peers.org/chicago.html

This Sunday use your Swing Goth Membership card at L Boogie

Subject: Performers for Sunday's L-Boogie Day Party!

These are just SOME of the awesome folks you'll be seeing grace the stage on sunday. It's going to be off the hook!

An evening of all things that swing and shuffle. A night of dancing the blues away.
Not only will there be hawt Burlesque and Standup, there will also be a Silent Auction. Oh, and dancing, lots of it. Performers include Sparkly Devil, Unwoman, Marlo Gayle, Vagabondage, and Cera, with more surprises to come and Kingfish as MC.

Performing:
Walking the dirty streets of the big city and the farm towns, Vagabondage sings you tales of lonely alleyways, late night busrides and unfortunate incidents with spicy spicy food. Comprised of a poet, an actor, a storyteller, a ham, a vaudevillian, an accordion player, two guitar players, a kazoo player, and two singers, this duo will sing songs to make you laugh, cry, and raise your glass and sing along.

Sparkly Devil is a glittering collision of sass, class, ass, and over-the-top vaudevillian entertainment. She first cut her rhinestone-encrusted teeth in Detroit's gritty cultural underground some seven years ago - a whiplash combination of sultry sex-appeal, saucy attitude, and slapstick humor, she cites her primary influences as Sally Rand and Daffy Duck. With her Cheshire cat grin and knock-em-dead curves, you won't know which set of cheeks to pinch! For more Sparkly, visit her site.

People who know better refer to Kingfish as Jim Sweeney, a long-time San Francisco show-producer and entertainer who has been co-creator and M.C. to such Bay Area extravaganzas as "Spectacular! Spectacular!", "Creepshow Peepshow" and "Hubba Hubba Revue."

San Francisco-based Unwoman, also known as Erica Mulkey, creates darkly beautiful music. Her repertoire is a powerful collage of vocals, cello, and electronics. Matthew Heilman of Starvox.net writes, "Her style ranges from a kind of experimental trip hop to swirling darkwave atmosphere with just enough static and noise to give it that extra technical punch."

Marlo Gayle is a moody bastard who smiles all the time so he doesn't have to deal with you people asking what's wrong. He writes naughty short stories, takes pictures of the queer literary scene, and has been known to say and perform things just to fuck with people's heads

Cera Byer has been studying dance, music, and theater since the age of 4. She is trained in classical piano, musical theater, jazz, and blues vocals, and guitar. Her dance experience includes Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Modern, Afro-Haitian, Afro-Cuban, Afro-Brazilian, Kathak of India, Dunham Technique, Salsa, Samba, Tribal Bellydance, classical and contemporary Persian dance, and most recently, Flamenco. In addition to being the founder and Artistic Director of Damage Control Dance Theater, Cera has performed professionally with Shahrzad Dance Company (Classical and Contemporary Persian dance), PULSE Modern Dance Ensemble (Modern), Ultra Gypsy Dance Theater Company (Innovative Tribal Fusion Bellydance), Rara Tou Limen (San Francisco's only Carnaval contingent representing Haiti), as well as presenting her solo choreography in festivals, concert stages, lecture demonstrations, and private events across the Bay Area and beyond.

Thank you all soooo much for coming! We had about 30 people for lessons and approximately 60 people throughout the night! It was spectacular!!!!

Thank you Trista for the cheese cake and the lemon what-ever-they-were, and Nick for the chocolate, chocolate, chocolate brownies. It was great to see some long lost friends, and all of the new regulars and a bunch of new faces!! Just when I think the night is good enough, it keeps getting better.

I love you all. Seriously.

My only regret is I didn't get to dance more.

Hi folks!
I am working in the city until 11pm.
As I'm from East Bay I can't make it tonight ... *unless* ((blink-blink)) some kind soul could drive me back to Ashby Bart.
What say you?
If not -- no worries -- no foolin'!
Have a great time.
With or without the bull.

Cheers,

No Foolin' has plenty of BULL! (Mechanical Bull that is)

In a very fortuitous move, The Cat Club has brought in a Mechanical Bull to ride. For those of you who remember, when we were in the back room of The Cat Club, they used to displace us to bring this in, but this time we've displaced ourselves... down the block... so we can return triumphantly at Midnight to the Bull in full swing.

Boy to I love irony. And puns. Obviously. ;-)

Free lessons + free cheese cake and brownies + 1 huge anniversary party = No Foolin'

Drunken Monkey + Cat Club + Birthday Party = Bull

You + Not there = Lame. ;-)

Ruining a couple of the surprises

Okay, so Sinister Swing is about to enter it's second year, and we're in for a bunch of changes, but as far as every member of this tribe is concerned, it's all good... as long as you pay attention.

First, we are introducing a membership club. Joining the Swing Goth Club is a one-time fee of $5, but is very worth it because it comes with a special gift and grants you access to gifts and discounts available only for members - yes. I said "special gift," I can't give away all the surprises. The $5 is a one-time charge, and will never have to be paid again, after that I'll know who you are (which is as much of a hint as I'm going to give regarding the special gift).

Why would you want to be a member of the club? Well, I'm about to tell you if you'd be patient a minute...

Second, George (the owner of Julie's Supper Club) wants to reward us for being with him through the tough times. He's extending a discount to people who come to our club. For just $5 "Swing Goth Club Members" (see above) can purchase a card entitling them (and only them) to $1 off wells and 10% off of food at Julie's. Period. All the time. This is HUGE of George. He's going to start having Karaoke on Wednesday, and other events throughout the week and the month, including some goth nights and some swing/free-form nights, and card holders will be entitled to $1 off wells and 10% off food at all of these events for the entire month. Also, I'm kicking around the idea of having a special Friday or Saturday Sinister Swing once a month.

THIRD... the price for lessons is going to increase to $5/night instead of $3 starting in April. Don't worry, this is still good news for most of you. "Swing Goth Club Members" will be able to purchase "monthly passes" for $10 (which is cheaper than you pay for four lessons now). I put the word monthly in quotes because really the card will be good for 4 lessons (you can come to two lessons with a partner and count it as four, or you can miss one and fill it in in the next month...). The lessons do not necessarily have to be consecutive or in the same month. I don't want to penalize people for only being able to come two nights a month if they're going to come two nights a month every month and sometimes bring a friend.

"Well gosh," you're thinking, "that's a lot of cards and it's all very complex." To which I answer, "Yes and no." For most purposes it's only one card. But it IS very complex. Which is why I wanted to explain it in a discussion thread to the members of the tribe before I tried to explain it to a bunch of people who just finished lessons at the Anniversary shindig. Speaking of which, lessons at our Anniversary are still FREE. The Anniversary is our night to show the world what we've built. There will be a photographer taking pictures. Feel free to show off, and strut your stuff.

To summarize:

$5 member initiation fee.
$5 optional purchase of card entitling owner to 10% off food and $1 off wells at Julie's Supper Club for an entire month!
$10 optional purchase of 4 lessons (which would now normally cost $20 if purchased individually).

More, less complex, surprises still to come!!!

The floor is now open for questions and possibly feedback or other sugestions....

L-Boogie Day! April 6th at Julie's Supper Club!

Deeply rooted in political protest, L-Boogie is tangible proof that the written word, dance, and debauched drinking can be agents of change. Other influences on the development of L-Boogie also include disparate musical influences like Hip Hop, Electronica, R&B, Rock, Goth, Industrial and other earworms.

L-Boogie Day is a time-honored celebration of the passionate, sexy, funny, and scorching L-Boogie. L-Boogie aficionados rave about the catchy swing blues rhythm and refreshing perspective. Many have faith in L-Boogie as an art form for the forces of good and righteousness.

There is a movement afoot to make L Boogie Day a national holiday and there is stiff competition as it is also Tartan day in both the US and Canada. Come join the movement!

WHAT: A party to celebrate all that is fly and fabulous about Miss L-Boogie!
An evening of all things that swing and shuffle. A night of dancing the blues away.
Not only will there be hawt Burlesque and Standup, there will also be a Silent Auction. Oh, and dancing, lots of it.

WHERE: Julie's Supper Club, 1123 Folsom St, at 7th - across the street from Brainwash

WHEN: Sunday, April 6th from 7pm till Midnight, or they kick us out - whichever comes first!

WHO: You! Those fabulous folks in the know. Anybody who likes to get down and shake a tail feather. Be a do-gooder and have yourself a L-Boogielicious time.

HOW MUCH: $5-20 donation. No one turned away for lack of funds. All donations go to help the L-Boogie Day movement.

Can't come to the party but still want to contribute to the L-Boogie Day movement? Add to the pot here: http://tinyurl.com/yt8kt8

So, as you can see the photos are in (thank you Chris), and the flier is done (thank you Jay) and we're all ready to go!

Soon I'll be distributing full batches of photos (there are 600+ of them) to the people that they are of. Some of the photos were not taken with the proper color setting on the camera. I color corrected the images that I put online, but a lot of what I send out is going to be really blue. Also, I'm sending small versions as the large versions would be prohibitive. If you want a larger version of anything that I send out, just let me know.

Best,
Brian

Sinister Swing is now and until further notice at Julie's Supper Club (on Folsom just up from 7th).

Lessons start at 8pm. Dancing starts at 9pm. The night is slated to end at midnight, but might end a little earlier or later depending on the people there.

Lessons are still $3, the night is still free.

The new venue is great, and we've got some more new faces! The new bar is swank and the bartender is a superb example of a human being. I seriously hope everyone comes out to check the new digs and I look forward to seeing you all on the first Tuesday in April for our one year anniversary if not sooner! :-)

What to do? (Venue Change?)

So, last night The Cat Club's back room speakers were dismantled.

I love the people at The Cat Club, but common courtesy would be for them to tell me/us when technical difficulties are going to cancel our night. I know the people there didn't know themselves until they got there, so I wasn't upset with Brian and Steve at first. Then, several people came for the night, and several other regulars showed up that were there in part because of the night, or at least enjoy us being there. They had also double booked DJ's for the front room. Hip-hop DJ's. If I was in their place, I would have told the DJ's that they should play to our crowd at least a little bit. Also, Kit was there. He could have jumped on for a small set. They didn't choose to do any of this. Instead they played hip hop all night.

Now, the people who came still had a good time, and made the most of it, but this is getting ridiculous. In the end all that one has is one's reputation, and people drive in from the North Bay, the East Bay, and the South Bay for the night, and it's just not respectful to them to have the night uprooted like that. Also, with all the money and time that I've put into promotion at this point definitely at a loss, one would imagine that they'd show respect to the money and time that our group invests in the night.

Obviously it's not my fault that they did these things, but I feel that complacency on my part and allowing them to do it makes me partially culpable. Lord knows it's no added incentive for people to come for something that gets pushed aside and not be even given a partial compromise.

Tempers flared at the time, as I tried to explain that this was not acceptable. It's certainly not the situation I want to continue opporating at a loss under. So, Sinister Swing is definitely not happening at The Cat Club again. We're looking into other venues.

Let me re-iterate, I love the people at The Cat Club. Even the people involved last night. But, I'm just not willing to do it. If someone else cares a lot that we continue at The Cat Club and wants to take up the reigns, that's fine with me. Otherwise, we'll look into other venues, and see what happens. In doing this, it's my intent to start the night a little earlier (say 8pm), and potentially end the night around 12pm. What does everyone think. In my opinion this is everyone's night. Should we just cancel it all together? I think there's sufficient interest to try and keep it going, but we have the chance to start from scratch. In an ideal world, what would everyone like to see moving forward.

I know Tuesday's not ideal, but given that clubs are generally booked on Friday or Saturday (and if they're not they would probably demand more of a crowd then we could draw), I think we probably have to stick with Tuesday, unless people have an idea of another place on another night. We think we have at least one option available for Tuesday.

Do people want the lessons to start at 8 and the dancing to start at 9 if we can make that happen? How late do people want to stay? I'm opening the floor to discussion.

Yours,
Brian

Anyone want to draw a gothy version of this: http://www.alleycatsswing.com/Image%20Production/swing2.jpg
for use on our new fliers? I don't really have money to pay anyone since I still just barely break even.... but I thought I'd ask. And hey, it wouldn't hurt if there was dipping involved. It doesn't need to be filled in. Outlined like this: http://www.socialdancing.net/db2/00186/socialdancing.net/_uimages/img001.jpg
is even better. It DOES need to be of reasonable quality. Which is a weird thing to ask when asking for free... but true...

That means the 15th and the 29th are the only nights in January that Sinister Swing will be officially happening. :-( Hopefully I'll see everyone around a lot, any ideas for a field trip on the 15th?
