hi :) we've started a new program at FIRE on saturdays in conjunction with the kalamazoo farmers market. we are looking for performers to line the walk way between our building and the market. if you are interested, please contact michelle at 269.344.6659 or email her at fire@thisisfire.com
we are also looking for vendors and artists who wish to sell their goods and services!

What is Market Saturday?

It's Fire brunch catered by Bites featuring Executive chef Howie Peak (formerly of Fandango, R. Stanley's, and Food Dance), working his culinary magic in Fair Food Matters Community Kitchen, cooking food fresh from the local farmer's market for purchase to Fire guests!

Come out and support Fire as we support the Farmer's Market, Fair Food Matters and local artists

We are holding the Market each Saturday and are looking for folks with cool things to sell. Booth space and tables at reasonable rates.

Also , know any artists to make a trail on the street from and to the Farmer's Market to create some real live street art on Market Saturdays? Seeking quiet traveling musicians, magicians, mimes, stilt walkers, jugglers etc. Contact us if you want to be an artist or vendor.

now that i'm not working at the hotel, i'm not stuck in a tiny cave with plenty of time to play on the internet! sorry i've been nearly non-existant here on the tribe.

so what has been going on?

now that i'm here in kalamazoo and have started finding my niche, i have a lot of news to share! the biggest news, which most of you already know, is that i've started my own troupe! our name is boheme and you can visit us at http://www.myspace.com/bohemetribal ... our next show will be in ann arbor on may 31st, with unveiled bellydance and kami liddle. then we move on to tribal revolution in june!

i am going to start teaching classes for the first time here in the kalamazoo area beginning in june! they will be on monday nights, from 6:45 til 7:45. they will be held at fire, which is an awesome space here in town! the people there are amazing and certainly lean toward my ideals of community. check them out at http://www.thisisfire.com

now that i'm settled here, i can actually set the free skill shares into motion! i have some amazing space that i think will be perfect for this project. it will also be *the best* hafla space you can imagine! more details once i hammer some things down. please pm me to let me know if you'd be interested in teaching a 1 hour free class. if you're traveling from out of town, we'll pool some dollars to help cover your gas expenses!

to help make ends meet, i have been making some tribal costuming to sell. if you have a bra, belt, headpiece, panel skirt or other accessory you would like to be brought into existence, let me know! we can work something out! my prices are extraordinarily reasonable!

hope to see everyone at the kami liddle workshop on may 31st! if you can't make it, perhaps we'll see you at arabian nights at the wayside on june 8th! na'imah, sabrina, and channon will be performing this time around! there is an open dance floor and a middle eastern dinner and/or hookah will be available to purchase for your enjoyment! we always have a hoot at these things!

hope everyone made it through the long winter with no problems and spring is finding you happy and healthy!

*free* belly dance skill shares!

time to reopen this topic, now that the crazy summer has passed and i have a little more time to organize these days!

what days/evenings work best for everybody?

saturday afternoons? wednesday evenings? anytime?

would an hour of free instruction be worth your travel time?

sabrina parshall will be the first teacher. she has alot of amazing talent, so it's hard to pick what she should teach. she has impeccable technique (drills) or has uber-great stage presence. what would everyone be interested in first? we'll set her skill share for a date in november, once everyone lets me know what days/times work best.

we need folks to volunteer for december & january's skill shares! do you have a skill you'd like to offer? fire dance, costuming, choreography, drumming? let me know! i really, really want to build some community amongst the dancers in this area!

Downtown Kalamazoo bellydance classes on Tuesday nights!

Safira (Kim Patrie) is opening up shop downtown Kalamazoo in the Mall Plaza! She is holding two classes at Carrie' s Fitness Studio on the third level of the Mall Plaza, which is on the old Burdick Mall between Michigan and South Street. The studio's website is www.carriesfitnessstudio.com. The street address, for those of you who Mapquest, is 157 S. Kalamazoo Mall, Suite 370.

She will be having two classes on Tuesday evenings. Level 1 is from 6:00 - 7:15. If you're a little more advanced, come for Level 2 from 7:25 until 8:40. Classes are very inexpensive! You can preregister (as I do) for a six-class session for $60, or you can drop in when you wish for $12 per session.

Safira's Myspace is http://www.myspace.com/safiraraks. I think she's a great teacher, and the classes are small in size so you get a LOT of attention. She's awesome, so is Maeve, who is soon to begin teaching the beginning class, I think. I would be so pleased to meet new members of the community as well as keep the wonderfully supportive and fun vibe that Kim and Maeve foster.

So, I'll see you there?

- hosting blue lotus tribe workshop & warm your heart benefit show on feb. 23rd. this is confirmed. they'll have two sections... one of which will be blue lotus tribe style combos. i'm thinking the other will be something more technical. i still need to decide! we have some great vendors lined up as well, although i'd really like someone whose majority of merch is tribal related. if you're interested in performing, vending, or participating, drop me a line.

- a series of belly dance skill shares. sabrina is teaching the first one. it'll be in november, we still need to set a date for it. haamid has offered to teach a few as well... dance, stage make up, costuming. he attended a prestigious fashion school in nyc, so i bet he has alot of awesome knowledge to share!

- mehndi party. when i put out the word for the belly dance skill shares, several people messaged me back with an offer to do a mehndi skill share. since there are so many, i thought we could turn it into a party, have drummers, snacks and maybe watch some bolly wood movies! this could possibly turn into a christmas party as well.

- gypsy caravan *the movie*. i'm currently talking with the distribution rep for this movie. i'd like to host it at foundry hall, probably sometime after the first of the year. if you're not familiar with the film, visit http://www.gypsycaravanmovie.com for more info. it's a gorgeous movie with tons of gypsy dance & music, as well as romany history and culture.

Schedule

10am-4pm with a 1 hour lunch break
(plenty of restaurants on the same street.)
Location

Unveiled Dance Studio
36 N. Huron St
Ypsilanti MI 48197
Certification

The program trains students to become complete bellydancers versed in dance movements, history, music and culture. Dance certification by Suhaila provides students with formal recognition of their dedication to and hard-earned proficiency in Suhaila's challenging style. The certification program encompasses five dance levels: Level 1 (Basics Breakdown), Level 2 (Fundamentals), Level 3 (Intermediate), Level 4 (Advanced), and Level 5 (Teaching Certification).

Each level provides training in identifying and isolating muscle groups, belly dance history and culture, rhythm identification, finger cymbals, movements and dance combinations, as well as the Jamila Salimpour format appropriate to the level. Every level is a vital piece in the dance mosaic, providing specialized training within a logical, cumulative sequence

Due to the physically intensive nature and duration of this workshop, we recommend you prepare for at least 2 weeks in advance of the workshop date:
Twenty hours of class over 4 glorious days with optional level 1 testing after we're all done.

This intensive is open to all levels of dancers and no previous experience with Suhaila's format is required. All participants are encouraged to work at their own level and pace.

As with all workshops taught by Suhaila the objective is for each dancer to understand the format both mentally and physically. This is achieved through verbal break down and demonstration of the technique, drilling, and choreography integrating the format into dance, as well as a chance to ask questions and discuss the format.

Suhaila's format contains NO STYLIZATION, but instead is entirely technical. What that means is that these classes are valuable for all styles of belly dancers from cabaret, to classical Egyptian to tribal to tribal fusion. Regardless of your level, from absolute beginner to professional dancer, your dancing will be taken to another level each time you study with Suhaila.

October 6th
8pm
422 Eagle Street
South Haven, MI 49090

Confirmed performers:
- Joette Sawall
- Tribal Corps
- Maeve Quinn
- Channon Mondeaux
- Aminah of Chicago's Twisted Hipz & Blue Cat Tribe
and of course, myself! (and maybe mr. khaled, with a little nudging)

I'm awaiting confirmation from several other dancers, circus folk, and spooky performers from all over the midwest!

If you're interested in performing, send me a private message! The more the merrier!

Keep your eyes peeled for more information, including a possible tribal workshop with a special guest instructor!

For those of you who didn't know of Tribal Revolution or couldn't make it, you really missed out on a great time. The classes were anywhere between good to awesome and the shows were just simply powerful. The chance to get together with people who all shared similar interests and remind us what it is like to be community felt really good. Blue Lotus Tribe has already put up the plans and location for next years Tribal Rev. I seriously recommend those who are beginning to discover this very wonderful form of dance to look into going next year, you won't regret it.

so, i have this crazy idea.

belly dance skill shares!

we have all these talented and knowledgable dancers in the area. i hear alot of us speaking about building community. i think that once a month, we could organize a free skill share. one person could be featured per month, teaching whatever their heart's desire... dance skills, sewing, make up/hair, costume design, middle eastern language, cooking, music... what-have-you! maybe it's the radical anti-capitalist in me, but i wish knowledge didn't have to cost so damn much money! i know we all are trying to make a living at this (or at least trying to pay for our dance addiction), but i also think that this could strengthen our local community and possibly draw more folks into the fold.

it is possible that not all of us feel that we have something to offer. we don't only need teachers to make this work. we need places to host the events, food to eat, promotion.... your living room might be just fine! bring a pot of soup to share! just bring your witty and charming self and learn something!

so here's the tricky part.... tell me what you'd like to learn! what would you like to teach?

I was just wondering what is everyone currently working on as far as costumes go? Myself, I am trying desperately to get something put together for Greek Fest and Tribal Revolution. I really just need a fringe/tassle belt at this time to tie into a costume. I currently am working with a wonderful looking olive green medallion japanese Barocade fabric for panels. But I need to find green tassles to match. Anyone know where to find some?

Vanaja is the 14 year-old daughter of a poor, low caste fisherman, struggling with dwindling catches and mounting debt. When a sooth-sayer predicts that she will be a great dancer one day, she goes to work in the house of the local landlady, Rama Devi, in hopes of learning Kuchipudi dance while earning a keep. She is hired as a farmhand, and her vivacious ways and spunk soon catch the landlady’s eye. To keep her out of trouble, Rama promotes her to a kitchen underhand, where she comes up against the old, crusty and extremely loyal Radhamma – Rama’s cook. It isn’t long before Vanaja gets herself invited to play a game of ashta chamma against Rama. Seeing that losing isn’t the mistress’s forte, Vanaja deliberately gives up her game, a fact that doesn’t go unnoticed, and which eventually secures her the landlady’s mentorship, first in music, and then in dance. Vanaja excels at the art, and seems to be on a steadily ascending path when Shekhar, Rama 23 year-old, handsome son returns from the U.S. to run for local political elections. Sexual chemistry is ignited between Shekhar and Vanaja (still a minor at 15), as flirtation and innuendo bloom. But, the situation suddenly turns ugly when Vanaja’s superior intellect pits her against Shekhar in a public incident. Matters escalate and she is pitched into a tale of class and family from which there is only one escape.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Rajnesh Domalpalli comes from Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh in South India. He spent his childhood in small rural towns associated with dam construction projects where his father worked as a civil engineer for the government. After completing his education he worked as a Computer Engineer in California’s Silicon Valley before deciding to take up Film at Columbia University in New York and graduating with an MFA in 2006. Vanaja is not only his first Feature but also his Thesis at Columbia. Rajnesh loves writing and dabbled in penning short stories during his spare time. One of these, The Dowry, was eventually picked up and broadcast by BBC’s World Service in Sept 1984 and Aug 1989.

Want a good excuse to go to New Orleans?

Want a good excuse to go to New Orleans? Here’s what I’m proposing……

MEDA of Louisiana is hosting a workshop by Amel Tafsout on July 21 and 22 in Lake Charles LA. I plan on going. I think it would be a lot of fun to get a group of us from the north together and go spend a few days in New Orleans then go to the workshop. It’s a great opportunity to have a mini vacation and the workshop is a perfect excuse to go.

Interested??????

For specific information about the workshop visit www.meda-la.com (they’ve been updating things so it might be under construction). If you’re interested, please contact me at sabrina@sabrinaparshall.com. I have information on the workshop, hotels, and of course I know tons of great things to do and great places to shop in the city. There is also the possibility of car pooling if anyone feels like making the drive instead of flying. I hope to hear from you all…. It would be great to have a large group. Please pass this message along to anyone you know that might be interested. New Orleans is a place like no other and they could use our support.

since several of us have taken classes and workshops with aida, i thought this might be of interest to you all :) it's from the may newsletter that suhaila salimpour sent out.

**********************************

Guest Article

by, Aida Al Adawi

What kind of dancer are you? Tribal? American Tribal? Gothic? Fusion? I am a dancer in progress. I will always be a dancer in progress. I am a “working dancer.” If you don’t work, you don't eat or pay your bills. It was and still is my “real job.” How on earth did this happen? Does one start in the beginning and continue or start now and go in reverse? I guess because life, just like one’s art, is an ongoing process, it really doesn't matter.

My parents taught us that to be a different color, religion or nationality meant you were special. They were scoutmasters and active in the PTA, band boosters and any other organization that was important to my sister, two brothers and me. When I was 2 my music career began in rhythm band lead by the founder of the Junior Bach Festival, Tirzah Mailkoff. When I became 4, I started piano lessons, using a telephone book to boost me up. Beginning in the 8th grade, I studied bassoon with Walter Green, the principal bassoonist of the San Francisco Symphony. Through high school I played bassoon in the Young People’s Symphony Orchestra. Summers were spent at scout camp and at Cazadero Music Camp. I taught the San Francisco boys chorus under the direction of Madi Bacon for a couple of seasons and worked on a regular basis with the San Francisco Opera company.

In 1969 I graduated from Cal State at Hayward performing both instrumental and vocal music. My career was heading toward a career in opera and the symphony. In the summer of 1970, some musicians were in need of a tenor shawm player for the Renaissance Festival. I was given two days to learn the instrument and music before we started rehearsing. Bal Anat followed our show at the festival, and if I didn't leave before they started, I couldn't leave. Hilary Lorraine, a member of Bal Anat, encouraged me to come and study with her mentor and as fortune would have it, Jamila started teaching at Cal State after the festival. It didn't take long before I was taking classes in Hayward, San Francisco, Marin County, Berkeley and anywhere else she taught.

I saw Jamila as a mentor and sensei. She truly encompassed what an artist should be. It was not about her, but her craft. Her teaching was an ongoing process of refining what we now know as her format. She started giving names to help identify the steps and techniques. Frequently they were named after the first dancer she saw perform them. Her incredible natural musical ability manifested itself with her elaborate finger cymbal patterns.

I remember studying a bit of flamenco from Rosa Montoya, being in the back of the class trying to make sense of rhythm, arms and feet. Nothing was broken down. It was jump in and sink or swim. If you wanted to learn badly enough, you kept coming back, and slowly, if you were lucky and practiced a lot, you might make some headway. Much like the Oriental dance, the tradition had been handed down for generations.

Jamila was not only a creative teacher, she was drop dead gorgeous. She had charisma and a presence that was mesmerizing. Her stories were as wonderful as her teaching. We were not allowed to take notes in class, so I would sit in my car after class trying to remember everything we had studied. Little did I know that years later I would be following her around the kitchen reading them aloud so she would correct them. This lead into her teaching manual, which made its debut in Lansing, Michigan.

At that time I was still in my symphony mode. Being a double reed player made me the perfect candidate for learning to play the mizmar, a Middle Eastern oboe. Since I left the Bay Area in 1982, I have worked all over the U.S., toured Canada with Holiday in Greece and toured South America with Rana and Naim. I have never stopped teaching and am constantly learning.

All those years ago, if I hadn’t been recruited to play in a Renaissance group, I would have never seen Jamila and my life would have been very different. While here in Michigan I was blessed to meet Thomas Andrew Aston, who founded the theater department at Oakland University. He taught and performed mime. His expertise included set designing, lighting, playwriting, juggling, and performing the role of Shakespeare and Igor at the Michigan Renaissance Festival. The best 17 years of my life were spent with him raising two boys. A year and a half ago, out of the blue, he was diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia and “crossed the river” into the greater universe. He was the one person in my life who loved and respected me as an artist. He would ask me what my legacy would be. It took many years to have an answer for that: It is to archive both of our extensive collections.

Suhaila and I have kept in touch all the years that I have been gone. As she has come into her own as an artist, teacher, wife and mother, one thing has remained constant. It is always about the “process” and not about becoming self-absorbed. She has remained just as down to earth as she was when she was little. This kind of honesty in one’s life is what real artists are made of. The fact that she too has found the “love of her life” fills my heart with such joy. Every time I write to her, it ends up opening another window in our past. When she asked me if I would consider writing for her newsletter, it was the perfect time.

When I read about our days in North Beach, I am stunned with some of the things that are written as fact. For example, I didn’t get fired for wearing a Bedouin dress 24/7 and I am not Jewish, not that it really matters in the large scheme of things. What is important is sharing our experiences, and even more important is honoring those who have paved the way for us to exist in this field of dance. Achieving a level of proficiency is not the end but the beginning. If you disgrace either your art or your mentors, you can be stripped of your titles. Accountability is important.

A couple of months ago I was in the Bay Area and shared a wonderful lunch with Jamila. As I said in the beginning, she is my sensei. I wanted to thank her for bringing me into a life that has been so fulfilling. As we visited, I had so many questions about her continued studies. She shared her research and newest finger cymbal patterns. It was a very special day.

Over the 36 years I have been proud to be a part of Jamila’s school of dance. I have saved everything I could, not realizing that archiving was to be my legacy. When Suhaila came to our home, I showed her boxes of videos, audio recordings, flyers and pictures I am in the process of cataloging for posterity. Now I know for sure they will all go to her. So will my extensive library and collection of artifacts. The circle will be complete, and it will all come back home where it belongs. The goal is to make it available to all those who come after us. I have so many stories and memories to share, and I am so honored to now be a part of Suhaila’s legacy as well.

With Love to our dance family,

i snagged this from her profile :)

********************

This is an invitation for everyone to come see me perform at the May faire Renaissance Faire in Marshall, Michigan; the Derbyshire Renaissance Faire in Muskegon, Michigan; and the Lake Superior Renaissance Faire in Ironwood, Michigan this 2007 season. Mayfaire is May 19, 20, 26,27,28; Derbyshire is June 16, 17, 23, 24 and Lake Superior is July 14, 15.
I will be performing a high-energy, light hearted, Gypsy belly dance show that showcases a dance style of many influences. Most prominantly, Egyptian and Turkish belly dance as well as western dance styles. The show incorporates and assortment of props swords, veils, and canes, trays of candles, fans and I even dance standing on martini glasses. I work with a live drummer and the dancing as well as the music are completely improvised which gives the show a new twist every time it’s performed. For more information my website is www.sabrinaparshall.com. I hope to see you there!
