ello all!

so i've looked around symbiosisgathering.com, on their FB page and also on the camp mather site, and i'm confused about the food situation.

does anyone know: is this event totally food free, so food can only be purchased through the vendors?
or do we have access to the bear food lockers?

thanks!

see you thursday <3

No, the event is not food-free. You can bring food and are even allowed to bring a propane stove to cook with, just no fires or BBQ pits or anything like that.

Although I am not sure about the bear situation. I know they recommend you tie your food up to a tree but to me that sounds a bit difficult, not to mention I'm not sure if there'll be enough trees in the camping area to hang EVERYONE's food from. Seems like a lot. Plus if it happened to rain that would ruin everything. I guess you could put your food in air tight containers so it doesn't give off as much of a smell to attract animals, and then attempt to keep it stored in your tent, but other than that, I'm not sure. I have a cabin to store all my food in so I'm hoping that will be enough to keep the bears away.

I was wondering, though, do they expect the smell of all the cooked food from the vendors to not attract animals? It would suck to be walking around getting food, and then see a bear creeping around a vendor booth... Scary. Lol.

I'm reasonably confident that the loud, non-stop reverberations of a half-dozen stages (or however many there may be) are more than enough to drive away most, if not all, of the fauna in the area.

      ...the smarter ones, anyway.

Haha yeah. That's true, I didn't think about that.

ya know I was wondering what I was going to do about the food situation. I thought that I read that even camp stoves were banned, like no fire absolutely. I was thinking smuggle in my stove and make coffee/ food on the DL.

I was thinking about just bringing sandwich food and keep stuff in a cooler. Maybe some canned stuff. You would think that thousands of people and huge sound systems would keep the bears at bay. They are generally on the shy side and in my experience and hit isolated food or spots on the outskirts of an event.

yah i definetly thoguht that all of the sounds, music, voices, etc. would keep them at a distance, but at night, when things quiet down i was unsure.
            thanks everyone <3

I'm pretty sure that things aren't going to quiet down at night. If anything, that's when it's going to get the loudest. Just don't camp on the very outskirts of the festival, I think if you're around a bunch of people and noise the animals will stay away.

I had to check the website to get the word on camp stoves. It seems that stoves are allowed. here it is from FAQ:

can I cook my own food during the Gathering?
While people cannot use the Mather bbq grills, propane operated stoves will be allowed for cooking. No charcoal, fires, tiki torches, open flame lanterns etc. Sorry if there was any confusion about this… see you soon!
