Warm-ups and Strengthening

I've been a little lax in keeping up with some of the "old" strength exercises we used to do in Level 1 and Drills.
– I remember the ones I like, but those are often the ones I don't need as much.

Sahira, if you get a moment, could you maybe list out some of the strength exercises?

Like, plies, plie to releve, lunges, and so on? And the abs, and the back, and the arms/triceps? I want to be certain that I'm working everything, instead of just assuming or hoping that I am.

Thor doesn't like level 2?

We haven't yet had a single week of Thursday night Level 2 when it wasn't pouring down rain… Thursday, of course, is Thor's Day. Add in the rain – God of Thunder – and it certainly seems suspicious.

Or maybe he just thinks we'll work harder if it's gloomy outside?

ahh flails about

So I finally finished writing out 8-count charts (my coworkers think I'm REALLY nuts now) and settled down to start actually doing choreography for this little solo.

I thought, after a half hour of work, to take a break, see how far I'd gotten.

36 seconds.

...I will go insane by the end of this week, when I hope to have this done. If I'm loopier than normal tomorrow, here's the reason.

Woo-hoo! So this Saturday is the Cultural Festival, and the fall session starts next week, and BellyFit starts Monday, and Bellydance Basics starts the next Saturday! Yay!

Costuming

If anyone is in need of fabrics for costuming, here's a lead…

Jo-Ann Fabrics in Peoria's Metro Centre.

The store is larger than the Bloomington store and carries a wider array, especially in ethnics and wedding fabrics. (There is a section called Sari Silks, honestly, right next to the Asian silks.)
Also, there are 2 large clearance racks, which contain everything from chiffons to denims to suede. (Not all are costumable, but there are some nice gems in there if you're willing to look.) One rack is just next to the cutting table (to your left as you come in the door) and the other is in the left corner of the store.
There's also a wide variety of embellishments available in the store, both "clothing" and "upholstery." (As if upholstery embellishments would be off-limits to dancers… yeah right.)
There's beads and jewelry-making goods, iron-on embroidery embellishments, and all that (though I can't say this is the best store to find those items.)

If you need costuming stuff, it will be worth the drive to check it out.

Fall 2008 Bellydance Classes

You can register and buy drop-in class cards online with Paypal, by mail, or in person (there are forms at the studio).

There are a bunch of changes coming in August, so carefully check the schedule! Level 1 moves to Tuesday and starts later at 6:30pm. Level 2 moves to Thursday and starts earlier at 6:30pm. Session registration will be $85 one week in advance or $95 after that. I have not raised my session prices since I began teaching in 2005, but due to inflation since that time, $80 in 2005 is like $89 today. So I'm not keeping up with inflation, but as you can imagine, my costs have gone up in the past three/four years.

Demystifying Choreography Workshop

You've been taking bellydance classes for a while, you really enjoy the moves, you want to put a piece together...and maybe you get stuck. It could be finding the right music, matching moves to the music, adding sufficient variety, or maintaining a certain style. In this workshop Sahira shares her choreography process as well as tips on other methods. We also compare the benefits of improv and choreography, and work with each. This workshop is for experienced bellydancers.

I am offering this workshop because of numerous requests from my students. I’m happy to do this, but I need 5 more students registered for this workshop to go. So if you want to take this workshop, please register asap. Also, if you do register, and the workshop is canceled, you will receive a refund.

A special note to Synergy RaD students: we will be having another Student Showcase during the Fall 2008 session, and every level 2 and 3 student will have the opportunity to perform a solo or duo/trio. This workshop would be a great way to get started preparing for that show.

New Pilates class!

I've just worked out some details with Lexy, so I'm very excited to announce a new mat Pilates class at Synergy RaD!

Pilates is an excellent way for dancers to tone long, lean muscles and improve core strength. Lexy's classes will be held Wednesdays 5:30-6:30pm, starting June 18. You may already know Lexy from Bellydance classes, she took level 1 and then level 2 with us a while back when her scheduled allowed it. Most recently she's been a Pilates instructor at THRIVE. I've taken her classes, and she's fabulous. She offers multiple options for each student, so every person gets the best workout for themselves. I hope you'll give her class a try.

This Pilates class is the first of a bunch of new drop-in classes I'm adding to the Synergy RaD schedule. Drop-in classes are $12 a class, or you can buy a class card: $45 for 5 classes or $85 for 10 classes. Cards are valid for 9 months.

I'm working on more drop-in classes, including BellyFit with Kalianna and Bellydance Basics with Zahra -- both of those will start in August.

New Studio!

Ok, it's official! I just signed the paperwork on a new studio. Starting with the next session, all classes will be in one place, the NEW Synergy Rhythm and Dance studio. I am soooo excited! The location is Suite 216 in the Attractive Alternative building at the corner of Jefferson and McLean in Bloomington. I added a map on the class FAQ page at the web site.

I'll be sending an email out to all folks registered for classes to clarify location and class times.

I'm also working on a small store, a DVD/book/magazine library, and new classes! Stay tuned....

Bellydance for Teens?

I've been tossing around some ideas in my head and I'd like to get your input.

Do you know of any teens (say ages 12-17) who would be interested in a bellydance class just for them? I think it would be a lot of fun, but I don't know if there'd be any demand for it.

At the MECDA fundraiser yesterday we were treated to performances from a couple teen dance groups--they were so cute, so energetic, and just all around great!

SRaD Studio Store and Library

As you can likely imagine, I'm super excited about the new studio.

I'm working on a small store and a library. The store will carry a variety of hip scarves and hopefully some CDs (I'm working on that now). I'll also get some of the cafepress stuff. If any of you were thinking you'd like something from there, let me know--it'll save you some shipping.

The library will have DVDs, books, and magazines from my personal belongings. I'm requesting a $20 security deposit for borrowers (refunded when you no longer want to borrow things), then you may borrow one item at a time for 2 weeks.

I'm also planning on a Grand Opening Sunday August 10 with free mini-classes, raffles, and more.

Summer Classes, DATE CHANGE

America's best dance crew

Ok- so I got hooked on this MTV show- Randy Jackson's America's best dance crew - it has lots of very cool break dance stuff , isolations etc. on it. If you don't get MTV, you can check out the groups on MTV.com - they show clips and some of the shows as well....although you can't see the isolations as well as on tv...
Check out "Kaba Modern" and "Jabbawokeez" - both have incredible dancers....

Showcase videos

I'm an aunt again!

I wish I had a photo already, but my niece is only an hour and a half old. Her papa probably won't go home until the hospital kicks him out when visiting hours are over.

I need drummers!

I had invited some drummers from the local OneVoice drum circle to join me drumming for level 1, I thought it would be good publicity for their group. As it turns out, they can't do it.

I know there are some drummers in this group, so here's what I need:

1 drummer to play the DD D base from the beledi rhythm on my djembe
1 drummer to play the DDtkt Dtkt beledi rhythm on doumbek

You would need to come to our level 1 class next Thursday 6:45-7:15, and perform with the dancers at the beginning of the show on Saturday.

Unity Rally

I just received an email about this. I didn't know that we were getting more hate group paraphernalia in town, but I find it troubling. In case any of you would be interested, there's a rally coming up on ISU's campus.

Due to the increased number of KKK paraphernalia found in the Bloomington-Normal Community and Illinois State University’s campus, “The Enlightenment,” a registered student organization at Illinois State University, is inviting you to “Take a Stand and March for Unity: on February 21, 2008. The “March for Unity” will start at 6:30 pm on the bridge between the University library and the quad. The “Unity Rally” will begin at 7:30 pm in the Prairie room of the Bone Student Center.

The rally’s main objectives will be to:
* Alert the general public of the hate groups in the community
* Create a network of people who will commit to reporting any hate crimes witnessed in the community
* Educate the public about things they can do in the future to prevent these hate groups from thriving in our town.
To support this cause you can contribute by:
1. Financially, by submitting donations to “The Enlightenment” to cover expenses for the Unity Rally
2. By participating in the Unity Rally and showing your support.

Winter 2008 class registration now open!
