i especially like the paper cut-outs of his late period.
now for something completely different. i always enjoy turning new people on to the late great painter Mati Klarwein, so here's his official website:

Mon, January 1, 2007 - 3:44 AMGreat, I always loved those album covers of Santana and Miles's Bitches Brew, I wondered who did them. They guy can really put the psychedelic experience on canvas! -

Re: discuss your favorite visual art & artists
Tue, January 2, 2007 - 6:55 AMWow, where do I begin? This is my field of study, and I have learned to appreciate many artists and styles. I don't necessarily favor something over another, but have phases - latelely I've been interested by Georgia O'Keeffe because of the simple lines and the rich colors, and it's not necessarily the flower paintings that are my favorites (O'Keeffe denied that the flowers were representations of female genetalia by the way). My interest is the way she painted the New Mexico landscape, in part because it is so foreign to me. I also read two biographies about the artist, and it always helps when you know about the artist's personality and personal history to add another dimension to the art.
I do like Baroque, a lot of people hate that stuff because it's overdone. One of my favorite works is The Ecstasy of St. Teresa by Bernini, I just love it and if I get to see it (live) before my life is over I'll be happy. (hmm, idea for a new thread...)
Thanks Holden for this question, good one. -

Re: discuss your favorite visual art & artists
Tue, January 2, 2007 - 10:16 AMCool stuff Holden.
I'm an admirer of some of the artists of the late 19th Century like Aubrey Beardsley, Mucha, Gaugin and Renoir. In sculpture I absolutely adore the work of Brancusi and Henry Moore. -

Re: discuss your favorite visual art & artists
Tue, January 2, 2007 - 11:46 AMnow that Archie has mentioned sculpture, i'll mention 2 of my favorite sculptors: Alexander Calder & Andy Goldsworthy. the official website of the Alexander Calder Foundation:
www.calder.org
as for Andy Goldsworthy... you can find a Wikipedia article on him, but outside of seeing his work in person, your next best bet remains watching the documentary Rivers & Tides, easily available on tape & probably DVD by now too. -

Arbus Meets Moondog
Wed, March 14, 2007 - 8:17 PMHolden- you know, according to the Patricia Bosworth biography of Arbus, she once photographed Moondog.
However, no one has ever seen the results! -

Re: Arbus Meets Moondog
Wed, March 14, 2007 - 9:12 PMMichael, didn't you once tell me that Weegee photographed him also, or no? -

Re: Arbus Meets Moondog
Fri, March 16, 2007 - 12:04 AM"Michael, didn't you once tell me that Weegee photographed him also, or no?"
Right. I think at least one of these photos is available in the book Weegee's New York, and two of them are reproduced in the liner notes of the Moondog compilation album that was recently released, The Viking of Sixth Avenue.

Re: discuss your favorite visual art & artists
Wed, March 14, 2007 - 9:38 PMWendy, i love mandala art too. that site has some gorgeous ones. Carl Jung painted some fine ones, as has Jose Arguelles. i tend to favor ones that have asymmetry as well as symmetry; the asymmetrical element serves to suggest dynamic movement.
check out one of my favorite mandalas, this one by Mati Klarwein, whose website i linked at the beginning of this thread:

Re: discuss your favorite visual art & artists
Fri, March 16, 2007 - 3:48 AMthe jackson pollock site is fantastic! it's one of my favorite wastes of time. i used that site to show my daughter that it's ok to be messy. art is messy. her art teacher at school was giving her a hard time & had told her her art work 'has to be perfect and neat'. that ticked me off, so i showed her that site & she liked it so much she started painting like pollock with her own art supplies & they came out great!

Re: discuss your favorite visual art & artists
Tue, July 31, 2007 - 6:35 AMbig fan of both Man Ray and Hopper...
saw an exhibit of Man Ray's early work...about 5 or 6 years ago. If I recall, he bought a place on the Palisades (some crest of hills overlooking NYC on the Jersey side) and did some work from their, complete with landscapes he saw.
Was an interesting take on him...
