I got my hands on a pretty old (I think) HMC performance dvd.. "bellydance at its best".

I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE - no ADORE - your "Aswan dances Music intro" performance.

It is breathtaking.

The best American bellydance performance I have ever seen, one of the few dances by an American bellydancer I find "complete", with emotion, softness yet perfection.. amazing.

I would love to see more of you!!!

Are you not planning to make more instructionals? I own your rhythms for IAMED; and will certainly be getting the vol. 2 as well.
But I would love more instruction by you!!
On stylization, expression, Egyptian raks sharki.. your technique and secrets :)

PLEASE do more! an entire performance dvd of restaurant or stage shows would be another thing I would be gettting within an instant!!
much love
You were here in Vancouver last month. I only got to attend one of the days of your workshops but I really enjoyed it. I have been a fan of yours for a couple of years now so it was a great opportunity to study with you in person.
And I am actually working on the choreography you taught.

Everything seemed so quiet - what a flurry of emotions. Sadness that everyone was gone, relief that I could go home and sit quiet after it all... This was my first time organizing a workshop, and Tamra-henna made it a wonderful experience. She was very kind, professional, and has a very effective method of teaching both technique and choreography.

The turn-out was very good for both the workshop and accompanying show - I want to thank everyone who attended. You all made this a very positive and memorable experience for me.
I got to try out some new teaching techniques and topics today in the workshop, which was really fun and informative for me. For those of you who don't know, we covered the stylistic difference between Raks Sharqi and Raks Baladi. I thought it went really well and could definitly see those differences in the participants movement and emotional expression. Exciting!

This could be a really dumb question so forgive me, but - there are numerous songs that I love that are Saidi rhythm - (in fact, probably most everything I love is that rhythm).

But here's the question: I remember someone saying one time that "such and such song is silly to perform without sagat." This may be a no brainer to everyone but - how does one know if the "bellydance police" will give you citation for performing to song without your finger cymbals?
Naturally, I try to avoid playing them at all costs but I'd hate to make some kind of faux pas.

I think it's clearer when you should grab a cane for a song, butI'm not so clear about sagat since so many songs could have them incorporated.

I've never seen anyone dance so fluidly, elegantly and seamlessly in step with the music. And really looking like she was enjoying herself, too.

So, Tamra-henna, I have a few questions for you. I assume that because it's a live band (and a very good one, too) that they have plenty of tricks up their sleeves. How much of your set is choreographed, and how much is improvised? How do you anticipate changes and other artistic flights of fancy? Are you always following the band or do they ever follow you?

With rhythms like Wahda and anything really I guess that moves more slowly in terms of tempo - you've got some time between dums or the ability to "dance over" the dums if you don't want to hit them all in every measure.

Are there some good guidelines for what to do for those "between" moments. For example do I need to make sure that some movements don't suggest a beat if it's not actually aurally there? wahda is 4/4 right so technically there are 4 beats per measure....but maybe it's bad to use a movement that is too "accent" related.

Tamra-henna, and anyone else wanting to chime in on this - it's clear that not all students are going to embody the style and look of their teacher - due to personality, skill level, etc.

But, are there some things that we as students need to come to grips with from a limitations due to phsyique standpoint?

For example, I am not built like you at all and things that look really great when you do them may not really look terribly good on me (okay - there's that perfect technique thing at issues!).

Is this me making excuses, or in fact is there something to figuring out what needs to be modified to fit one's physique or is it really just skill level? I'm sure there are no easy answers...it'd be nice if there were some general guidelines like - "if you don't have a long torso, you probably don't want to do x, y, z move...." Not a great example but maybe you get my drift.
I was watching your Raks al Assaya performance again. To me it seems like you have a different approach to cane dance than most, or is it my imagination?

Also - someone asked about the history of cane dance on bhuz and with belly dance there are usually 95 different explanations for everything along with 95 explanations of the nuances!

So aside from feminized Tahtib - what is there to know? (or is that a bad two-word summary?)

Just thought I'd pop in and let everyone know that I'm here and I'm available to answer whatever questions you might have. Also, thanks to Dani for starting this tribe! Just to get things going......

As you know, I lived many years abroad while pursuing this art form. For me, the experience of dancing is very intertwined with travel. Raks Sharqi has allowed me to travel the world and live in many different cultures. In the day to day aspects of my career, I do not always get a chance to share some of the interesting places I lived, the people I have met, or the sights I have seen. I thought I'd take this opportunity to share some of them. I will be posting some photos and stories. Feel free to ask me about any place that interests you. I will be adding on to this over time, so keep checking back !

First post coming shortly......

The others that seem to be on my favorites for the past 6 months are on Wash ya Wash Vol. 2 - I'm crazy about Baaiya Elhawa, that version of Tamr-henna, and Lamone Elnas.

A couple of questions - I take it there are many Tamra-hennas out there (ha ha and no joke considering there are two on this tribe already!) - but the most popular version I hear people dance to seems to be very different that the Wash ya Wash version....so what's the scoop with that song?

The other is - and apologies this is a bit cliche - if you had only a handful of songs that you could perform to from now on - what would you choose?

I am selling my gold authentic Madame Abla along w/ viel & skirt for $425. It's in great condition, and has been worn about 6 times, for not more than an hr. each. The costume is fitted to me, but nothing has been cut, so it can be adjusted to any size. It is size large, so it could fit a petite person such as myself, up to size large. Ablas sell for $600-700 new, and the fakes also sell for this price at Turqouise International.

Pix are on my website, www.melindadance.com (currently the only thing on there).

I live in West LA, and will be in OC in the summer if you would like to pick up.

What was the hardest thing for you to learn in M.E. dance?

and conversely, what is the hardest for you to teach students? do they relate?

I haven't figured out what the most difficult thing is for me yet - certainly I feel challenged by not knowing what lyrics are saying and often feel I'd dance better if I knew! I think my biggest challenge right now is consistency with posture & balance.
