Can any of you Cheetas out there tell me what
Johnny Weissmuller was saying to the elephants
when he went "ungahwah" not sure of spelling.

    "Ungawa!" Tarzan shouted, and Cheeta bared his teeth and screamed, "Where's my banana, Ape Man!"

    It might be Swahili. But it's probably a made-up word that sorta sounds African.

      well as usual, google solves the problem

      funny history-

      Tarzan's "ungawa" was strictly a made-up word when it first appeared in the movies. But by chance, it's also Swahili, with a couple of meanings, depending on inflection. "To unite" or "to join" is one translation. It also is a kind of ground grain. Or maybe it's Labrador retriever for "sit."

        Funny how a Hollywood fabrication turns out to be a eal Swahili word that might actuall work in the dialogue. I think I Googled the same thing you did...see my new post - Ungawa, and other such fun words.
