Tanja and L'Anonyme Collective are really picking up momentum as a force to be reckoned with in the bellydance world with the debut of their new material alongside some of the biggest names in dance at this upcoming event.

Coming into its fifth year, the ultimate bellydance afterparty has a new name--Nouveau Nights--reflecting the event's focus on spotlighting new material. This year's 2-night event (Friday, March 16th and Saturday, March 17th in the SF Bay Area) features more than 10 debuts, including new pieces from bellydance superstar Zoe, the re-emergence of a new Lapsus, and the live debut of a number from Ariellah's upcoming DVD. Red-hot Unmata is a first-time performer and has created a controversial new production just for Nouveau Nights. Of course, many of the best elements from past shows are also on board, including the new-look Ultra Gypsy. With many talented fresh faces, Jill Parker's veteran troupe promises to surprise even their long-time fans. zaghareeting~

Why does it seem that cabaret belly dancers don't zaghareet or get zaghareeted at as much as tribal dancers? I know it's certainly not a difference in the appreciation of the dancer! I'm thinking it *must* be a bd culture thing... an american bd culture thing.

Is it because zaghareeting is more of a folk-sy thing? and cabaret is distinctively 'not folk-sy'?
Is it because tribal and tribal fusion dancers are just "noisier", ie it's part of the "tribal bd culture" that is just so american?
(or is that just me being the noisy one?)
Is it because I'm in a primarily tribal/tribal fusion bd world and I'm totally missing something?
or is it just me and all in my head?

origins of belly dance~ cabaret opinions vs tribal opinions

Alright, another thing that has been on my mind for quite some time...

I know the history of bellydance is extremely vague.
This, in conjunction with the fact that I like to ponder the differences between tribal and cabaret (given that they have the same movement base and all)...

It has always struck me as interesting, that *in*general*it*seems*, tribal dancers look to the Roma peoples as where belly dance started, and cabaret dancers look to Egypt as where belly dance started.

I do know that there are Roma in Egypt, like the Ouled Nail and the Gawhazee, as well as all over the Silk Route...
and certainly there are the folk people all over North Africa and the Middle East with their respective folkloric dances...
and there are the cabaret dancers that dance in the nightclubs in Cairo, Marrakech, etc...
and most certainly there are different social classes that dancers belong into (in N Africa and the ME)....
and given that the tribal styles (as well as a lot of US cabaret styles) are descended from Jamila, who learned from various peoples & dancers & musicians & whatever she could get her hands on...

All "styles" aside, how does one reconcile the "origins" of the same movement base?
i.e. the basics of the dance.
Why "Egypt" vs "Roma"?
Is it a class thing?
