November, #13 Death

The Moon of last month moves into the number 13 card of Death. November shakes off the dry bright leaves of fall and nakedly moves into the dark cold stillness of winter. Psychologically Death is a time of letting go of the old to make way for the new, and the unknown. It is a time of deep inner reflection, a time of transformation and renewal of one's deep inner core. There is not much movement...yet. Relate to this time as you would to germinating inside the womb, only here it is the womb of your own inner world. Ask yourself, what do you really want out of your life? Where do you see yourself this time next year...? And, what do you need to sacrifice in order to receive this? It may be an old relationship which doesn't work anymore, an environment that doesn't stimulate anymore, or as simple as a change of wardrobe... let go of what holds you back. Death may be painful at first, but then there is a great release and you will see the light as you have never seen it before

The Moon, October's Tarot card of the month

As The Hermit of last month in September represented the journey of going within, and so The Moon of October is the accomplishment of the Hermit, and the unexpected discoveries of the dark side of the soul. It is being involved with the inner journey and its twisting labyrinth of unimagined revelations, not all positive, not all expected. The Moon is the unknown, and unraveling the unknown. Just as NASA is going to explode a nuclear bomb on the moon for experimentation this month so it holds within this action an unknown outcome, with an unforeseen ripple effect on the rest of the world, if not the universe.

September's "The Hermit"

For the month of September I chose The Hermit of the Tarot to represent our leaving the outward physical summer months and turning gradually inward towards the winter months ahead.
"The leaves start to turn vivid colors and we watch as the sun grows dimmer, the days cooler and the nights longer. The last vestiges of summer drift away and we begin to turn inward again not just physically but mentally. It's time to nourish ourselves with our new growth and enlightenment gathered during the months of the sun and remember our inner selves. The Hermit turns inward on their journey, looking at the year past and the times that have been and the new lessons learned, and what still needs to be learned. It is just the beginning of the journey inward as the season turns inward with us, gradually withdrawing. Move gracefully with the seasons."

August is the month of Strength and the ability to tame the great lion, symbol of our wild nature within. The long warm summer days are at its peak, and so is our physical strength and endurance. We have built up health for the coming winter months, planted new seeds that will sprout and carry us through the dark hours. This is a time of physical reflection and assessment, and with this outer realization comes a new and deeper inner harmony that generates growth in all aspects of our being. Everything that is wanting is now assuaged and our fears are overcome. Health and Fortitude are with us now.

July is the peak Summer month, with the long days that began with Midsommer's eve. The Sun card shows the rising up towards the sun and the illumination of the land. All shadows are exposed and the light shines through not just in the physical realm but in the mental and emotional realm. It is a time for the outer expression of your inner world, and the sharing and community that comes from experiencing the manyfold ways of worshipping the Sun together.

Fremont Summer Solstice Parade and Tarot card "The World"...

My Tarot card of the month for June I chose "The World" and posted it here June 1st on my website:
http://www.tarotofthepomegranate.com/gallery.html
June 21st is the day of Midsummer's eve, the Summer Solstice, and the longest day of the year. The World card is the 21st card of the Major Arcana, and the last card of the Major Arcana, indicating the ending and the beginning of one state of being to another, just as the Summer Solstice is the peak of summer The World card is the peak experience, the final acceptance and awakening into one's full self. It is realization and rebirth. May your Summer Solstice experience be one of light, love and celebration this year!
And only a week ago I decided to participate in the Fremont Solstice Parade and so What will I be wearing? A blue veil over my head just like in the World card, and no it wasn't planned that way at all, I just noticed the coincedence now! I'll be dancing with Delilah's bellydancer's and we're all in shades of blue and turquoise. It'll be quite beautiful as we're representing water, and my charachter is a "wavelette" hence the blue veil over myself.
I will take this as a good sign. It is Nini's first birthday on the official Solstice day, Sunday the 21st, and she will of course be at the parade with her papa! The World card is also the 21st card of the Major Arcana, and the last card of the Major Arcana of the Tarot. My daughter's birthday could not be more auspicious!

(Also this card and day is special to me because Anastassia was born this time last year, right on Midsummer's eve at 5:52pm. The Cusp of Magick and a Magickal day it was indeed!)

Tarot card of the month

I have a new feature on my website on the gallery page. Scroll down underneath the Tarot card links and you will see the "Tarot card of the month". Last month it was the April Fool, and guess which card that was?! This month it is The May Queen. I also include a unique interpretation with each card each month.
Last month's Fool I extrapolated on how the Fool plays the part of the "Holy Fool" for the court, and the King and Queen. This is a character i have always found intriguing. Yes, even the Queens had fools - sometimes they were even female. The Fool, being seen as touched by God and thus a bit out of their senses, but at the same time having most sense than most and always speaking the truth, they could get away with the most ascerbic and many times lewd comments about higher court officials that most people would be executed for. Of course sometimes even a Fool could be foolish and go too far. It's all about playing your trump card wisely!

The Hanged Man

I'm in the midst of painting the Hanged Man, and it's quite a challenging painting! It is nothing like the original Tarot of Marseilles Hanged Man. Though I have based many of my Major Arcana paintings on this ancient deck, I have taken extreme artistic license with this one by truly delving into the deep core meaning of the card itself and moving beyond the simplistic symbology of the Marseille interpretation.
It is a giant landscape, and as you know the Major Arcana are painted on 5.2 x 3 ft. paintings! It's like being IN the painting when you paint at this size and is my favorite medium. Painting is so pleasurable to me and so very very challening. Every painting I've done has had it's own unique challenges and I've grown so much over the 10+ years I have been working on this project.
Am I being reflective? The Hanged Man is all about reflection upon one's life, and looking down upon the landscape of one's journey - inner and outer - I will say no more! Soon I hope to be posting the finished picture to this site, and sending out the latest card to my Tarot enthusiasts all over the world who have bought a deck and await the latest additions.
I am doing all of this while having a friend babysitt Nini upstairs for 1 or 2 hours while I paint down in the art room, or after I get her down for a nap, or up late at night and thus suffering the next day since I am no longer allowed to sleep in...! She is ten months old next week,, is crawling and babbling nonstop - says Mama and Papa and points at everything. She wants to know about this world she lives in now.
One day Nini will be painting and drawing and going to galleries with her mama and papa, and it will be so great to teach her about art and dance and music and to see her grow and expand her own talents. Creating and raising a child is like a huge art project in itself.
I've always called Tarot of the Pomegranate my "life long" project, and now I have added Anastassia "Nini" Magritt on top of that. Just as TOP has taken on a life of its own and will continue to snowball into something more great, so will Nini. It's inevitable, it's life.

Who wants to foster a painting?

Here ye Here ye - due to the lack of space in my new abode I am no longer able to store some of my cherished paintings. These paintings are also for sale but with the state of the economy I'm not holding my breath in selling them anytime soon. Therefore, I have decided to foster out my paintings to caring people with safe and smoke-free homes in the Seattle area. That means you!
The aforementioned paintings are on display on my website at this link: http://www.tarotofthepomegranate.com/Painting%20Gallery.html
( "Realm of the Soul" trip tych and "The Great Inheritance" paintings do not apply. )
The paintings that are available for your foster care are: "Fever", "Black Trees" and "Kashmir" , also I have two other paintings "Dark Angel" and "Visitation" that are not up on my site at this time that also need good homes! (Trust me, they're just as beautiful and mysterious as the other three that are on display.)
Contact me and let me know which painting(s) you are interested in. I've never done this before so we'll work out the details as we go!
Dark Blessings,
An-Magrith

Getting back to painting

I am finally getting back to painting after having my little baby Nini 8 months ago! I have been cleaning out the painting area in the basement in our new house, so Poul and I will both be painting up a storm soon here! I am not sure how we are going to work out the schedules, it will revolve around Nini of course (as everything does now) and her naps! I'm sure i can get my mom to come and babysitt sometimes during the day so I can be downstairs painting. Right now i have the Hanged Man which is almost done sitting there in it's new painting area waiting for me, and my blank unprepped canvas, which will be the Chariot ,next to it.
It's so exciting to have only two more left to do of the Major Arcana!

Lastnight as I was putting paint on my palette getting ready to do the face on the Fool I suddenly get text messaged - and it is none less than my Fool himself Sage! Note: He has NEVER text messaged me before AND I have not spoken to him in MONTHS!
Kwinky dink or what?
Anyway, He definitely is a holy psychic FOOL and it shows in his face I painted in lastnight (from a reference photo I took almost 3 years ago)
I'm so excited to finally start the FOOL!
It is my goal to finish the Major Arcanum before Anastassia Magritt arrives!
To complete the Major Arcana after ten years and then to start a whole new chapter in LIFE at the same time will be most profound.

Good-bye King of Wands!

After contemplating a heartfelt email sent to me concerning the acquisition of my painting "King of Wands" I finally gave in, and so it is worth posting that I've unofficially ended the moratorium of never selling a Tarot painting until the deck is complete.
Truly, when a painting really speaks to someone on a deep level as I only hope a few of my works may do to some people, then indeed they should have it.
Here is some of what the purchaser wrote:
I saw this painting on display last night and it really spoke to me.
I've never really researched tarot much, but there was definitely something that drew me to the painting. I just had an understanding of its intent.
After having read up some more information on the card, I can definitely see the parallels to my own psyche. I've never really expected any
definition or box to accurately represent life, and I don't presume to have any more power then anyone else, but I can't help to but see the connections.
When I saw your paintings this weekend, and there was something about the King of Wands that I really connected with. The chess pieces, the concentrated stare, the Hebrew writing, the smirk, the fire in the dark/cold. He seemed to have true understanding, and pure excitement at the fact that he knew what the next move should be. My friend tried to tell me he was evil, while I tried to explain to her that he was good. If I was able to own this painting, I'm pretty sure it would be my prized possession for the rest of my life. I've always wanted to own a piece of artwork that I have an understanding of, something that truly moves me, would be something to cherish.
This painting is special to me because it is of my handsome devil Poul - and I took this photo of him at our first photoshoot and painted the painting soon after in his loft. Ok I see the real Poul every day so it's not so hard to let go after all.... ;)
Now that I'm $2,000 richer should I invest in a new Mac or sink to the level of Windows..? If I go with Windows I can still have enough left over to go shopping... Mmm

The new deck is similar to the old (so there won't be a big difference for those of you who already own a deck) but the image is a bit larger and the Major Arcana is now numbered. I have also renumbered in Latin numerals the Minor Arcana.
Enjoy!

1. Hanged Man, Magi read, Xtina danced
2. Fool, Maureen read, Magi danced
3. Tower, Xtina read, Maureen danced
What is most interesting is that the two paintings I am working on in that order in my space right now is Hanged Man and Fool! The Tower at the end tells me to get my butt in gear and finish the paintings already!
Seriously when I have been working on a painting this long I feel like I'm going to go crazy if I don't finish them, so the Tower card tells me I'm on the borderline now - Just Do It!

This is what the sign says at Eco-elements where I work as a Tarot reader (yes, I'm the psychic) every Monday and sometimes Sundays and Tuesdays.
Sometimes I can't even believe it myself.
What do people think when they come in and see this sign? Do they automatically think about Tarot? Not really, I mean, I am a Tarot reader and I wouldn't think that if I saw the sign!
Some people come in and get afraid when they see the sign " No way am I seeing a psychic!'
I never identified Tarot and Psychic actually until recently... Now that I am reading for people for a living I have become much more "psychic" or "in-tune" and I am also becoming more and more individuated... as in I am becoming more aware and objective from the human condition.
I also see that the cards unfold perfectly though it "seems" chaotic, just as nature seems chaotic. Actually everything is just as it should be. Is that cloud not perfect? What could you do to make it better?
Are the cards now laid out perfect and as they should be? Yes, they are! At first I would question but now I am so assured in each and every reading there is no question - only interpretation and getting on with the objective here - to find out how to guide and help the person I am reading for. This is my job now and it's an honorable position being the "psychic"...

A bitter artist statement? I'm starting to crack..

I have to write a Bio/ Artist statement for a major show coming up in June in Port Townsend, it is an Archetypes show that I was invited to be a part of and they want my Tarot of the Pomegranate paintings! Yay! It is being held in the museum gallery in this hip artsy town.
Now I have a dilemma..
I hate writing artist statements and usually keep them very short and as impersonal as possible. I consider myself a very private person. I keep my bio short and to the point, I'm from Seattle but I am Norwegian. I could extrapolate on this that I am not just a Norwegian descent but full blooded, fluent and a dual citizen and my whole family lives there and the country and culture subconsciously influences my work.. but I do not I could go off on my many exotic travels around the world and how they affected me spiritually, esp to Indonesia and that is how I got involved in dance and performance art but I don't go there...I could mention I went to the Art Institute before I went to Cornish but why shame myself? I could say I grew up a Rocker chick from Lynnwood and was friends with Layne Staley and so on and so forth but ... truly I don't think anyone fucking cares.
But for some reason I went off on my Artist Statement and for the first time really wrote something unusual for me, is it a good thing? How would I feel going to a show and reading this kind of statement..? Mmm, well, as a painter/artist I would relate but as a normal person..?
I am actually considering sending this statement in. Why not? It's the fucking truth!
So the BIO is my usual artist statement speil, promoting my work mostly - skip it if you wish since this is just a copy & paste, and go on to my long-winded bitter Artist Statement straight from my suffering artist's soul! :P

BIO

An-Magrith Erlandsen is a Norwegian Seattle native, and holds a BFA from Cornish College of the Arts. Along with being an art teacher and serious oil painter she is also a performance artist and belongs to the experimental fusion belly dance troupe “Hands of Kali”, performing regularly in Seattle.
She has been working on her “Tarot of the Pomegranate” oil paintings since 1998 and has a website under the same name, tarotofthepomegranate.com, where she sells limited edition “Tarot decks in progress..” and Tarot prints.
An-Magrith began showing this body of work in 2003 and has shown at numerous different venues throughout the Seattle area since then. There are also prints of this work for sale at “Gargoyles Statuary” in the U-district. These paintings have also been used in various performance art, salon parties and rituals, and is the official deck used by “Hands of Kali” for their Belly Tarot readings which occurs monthly at the Jewel box Theater at the “Rendezvous” in Seattle. My Tarot paintings can also be seen every First Thursday of the month in Pioneer Square’s Prudential Building, as part of “Red Stripe” Art Studios.

STATEMENT

My project “Tarot of the Pomegranate” has become quite a journey and has taken on a life of its own. Not just as a painter have I expanded my experiences but also in Tarot and the power of symbolism, archetypes and the laws of attraction and coincidences that working with such imagery attracts in one’s life. My life has unfolded in profound ways with many great lessons for my soul. Objectively I am grateful for the experience of being able to express my imagination on canvas and share it with others. I am deeply moved by how my work affects people, and not only by the inspiring compliments that I do receive but usually by the attacks. Indeed, I have been attacked for painting “Tarot” in the first place by the religiously ignorant as you can imagine and have been snubbed by not only people who don't know me but life long friends as a result. I have been attacked by both men and women in subtle and not so subtle ways just for being a female and painting in the first place (women you know what I’m talking about). I have been attacked by men who were attracted to me through my art, who wrote inspired poetry about me as an artist and my work, hosted my art on their site and help me with my own letting me know that ‘my work needs to be seen’ etc. only to turn on me later most viciously when I reject them by trying to destroy my character through written word, corrupting my site etc. (lucky I never painted any of these assholes, only the real souls come into the Tarot hall apparently..!) I have been agonizingly snubbed outright for painting something popularly yet wrongly categorized as “New Age” and thus am not even considered for a “serious” art show. Yes, my own glorious so-called “open-minded” Cornish college snubs me time and again from their alumni gallery because I am painting something “new age/ spiritual/intuitive” when “real” art to them is supposed to be a vacuum without any symbolism or meaning outside of something ‘witty’. How and why must we strive to define and categorize ‘art’? Is it not possible to be just present, suspended in time for one moment and just look at a work without the pre-judged stereotypes? It is a rare thing indeed. My work has been called “Goth” (therefore my work may have the power to incite black clad teenagers to murder) by an artistic director when he saw the “Death” painting and therefore is not worthy of further consideration (it may be dangerous!). My work was being highly praised to a friend of mine by an educated-looking older man at one of my Tarot shows where I’d also been performing, and when he was introduced to me and found out I was the artist his face fell and he took on an incredulous look and started to criticize me that I didn’t know what I was doing and have no right to proceed in this work now because obviously I am a young attractive woman and a belly dancer to boot so who the fuck do I think I am?
One woman at a show asked me if I had truly painted all these paintings “by myself”? It’s fascinating how people project their own short-comings and prejudices upon artists and their work. Our society strives to keep people in a somewhat limited vacuum of stereotypes, therefore we learn not see what is right in front of us. I have objectively noticed that this work of mine “Tarot of the Pomegranate” seems to blow people up in some way, they either love it, or hate it, and definitely if they were somewhere in between and they meet me and like me they like my work, if not they hate it. I would like to believe my art can stand alone without the preconceived notion of it being “Tarot” or painted by a “Belly dancer” but whom am I fooling? Women have consistently been snubbed in the arts over the years, and it is still going on today though most people ‘in the know’ will deny this. It is not just men who snub, women too! There is not a "good ole' women's club" where we stick together after all. As anyone who is up on art history knows, that women in the past have written or painted under male names, or just remained Anonymous for otherwise their work wouldn’t even be considered, and when they have been found out by the ‘establishment’ after great success there is a denial, a shock and then usually some kind of justification of it being a lucky fluke followed by a gradual abandonment of further promotion and successes for the female artist (unless she is lucky and has acquired a supportive patron who has his foot in the door of the art world). What a sad and pathetic history us women have in the arts, but why deny it? It’s still going on today. Only it is not possible in this informational day and age to get away with posing as a man. And why should I deny my gender and that I am profoundly connected to my art in more ways than one, especially with this project which has consumed years of my life and steered my life in so many ways? I have used myself as a model in all of the female Major Arcana paintings, it was not planned it just happened that way as with much of the imagery in my work. I have used boyfriends as models in the male archetypes. Each suffering love/hate relationship with the male is in the painting. Each suffering detail in all my work comes out of my own blood and soul. It takes me sometimes years to finish one painting, a few months for another. It depends on the inspiration that pulls me in at first, and how it continues, if I can get through the different stages of creating the work. Some of my work is more “successful” than others and I barely even know the reasons why. Art creates itself and I feel like a vehicle for painting, letting go and accepting one’s role as the vehicle equals a “successful” painting. It is not easy to always let go of one’s ego and shortcomings to be able to get to that point, for to get to that point it feels like life or death “Let Go!” And then life is good, but alas back to the real world eventually and surrounded by people in a world that has no intention of ever letting go or even fathoming what that is. If anything maybe my art can give people an inkling, or just the idea of letting go? That I would find very satisfying.
I sell limited edition signed “Tarot decks in progress..” through my website at this time, but I do eventually plan to get published through US Games, Llewellyn or some other Tarot publishing company. Once I am through with the Major Arcana, which is only a step away at this point, I will pursue the real publishing houses. I enjoy sharing through my website and various blogs my journey with my Tarot project and I hope to inspire other painters as their own unique journey unfolds for them through the canvas.
What do I want to happen to all my canvases once the whole deck is complete? Along with my book I'd like to write about my "artistic journey" I’d like to show them in galleries all over the world, go on tour with my Tarot. In the end they would be housed in their own special Tarot museum, ideally in the Seattle area or in Norway, my home country.
Yeah, I like to dream big and why not? Life is a dream...

Norwegian Tarot Magazine interview!

I was sent a link to a Tarot magazine published in Norway that has been going strong for years, the Scandinavians are into it! Of course it is all written in Norwegian. They have now asked me for an email interview for their next issue about Tarot of the Pomegranate, I agreed and now I received a plethora of questions that I must respond to intelligently in Norwegian, which is difficult since I taught myself to read and write Norwegian by reading magazines ~ I never learned proper grammar that is.
My parents of course spoke only Norwegian to my brother and I as we were growing up and my whole family is residing in Norway still at this time. So I have answered the questions, the first question asked me if I was truly Norwegian and if so, why am I living in USA?
Ha ha ~ why indeed am I continuing to live here..? Because of my Tarot project for one, and others...well, I do have a good life here and not ready to give it up yet though I am sure life will be even better in Norway. That will be the next chapter in my life..
Well, I will be keeping this site updated on my interview, I will translate it of course. Right now my parents are going over my answers and fixing the grammar, ha ha. Of course they are extremely proud of this since it is a Norwegian magazine.
I wonder what they think about my answers - they are very spiritually oriented and pretty out there...being nordic they don't bother to communicate their feelings or thoughts about it, only that there are mistakes that need to be corrected. My dad kind of stares at me strangely I noticed now, since i do mention in the interview that it was his influence that got me started on Tarot!
I'm sure he didn't even know this until last night... how sad.

These are two extra cards in the Major Arcana that were edited out via the ground-breaking Rider-Waite deck with all decks following suit afterwards.
Does any Tarot enthusiast out there have any information on these two "missing" cards?
I have an old Spanish deck that has these cards in them (it was given to me by a friend without the box so I am not sure what the name of this deck is, though it looks a lot like the Marseilles just more illustrative)

Are you the impoverished one, or the one who has enough to share? If you are in need of care, don't be too proud to ask for it. If you see someone in need, don't turn away, for in offering healing and aid, that goodness will come back to you tenfold. All people in need are one.

I am taking down my show from the gorgeous NorthWinds Art center gallery this Saturday - if you are in the area go check out the art! There are six artists in all and all the work is exceptional, not to mention the beautiful space an lighting!
My work has never been this well lit or presented and it is the first time it's been in a REAL gallery besides the Art Not Terminal space.
What a difference to have your work presented so professionally - it beats the club scene anyday...... :P

Spiritus and the Tarot lastnight

Lastnight was a most powerful and magickal Spiritus!!!
I had five Major arcana paintings on display on the stage.
The Devil, The Moon, The Tower, The World and Justice. I was only going to bring four but all I have left at home are these five since the rest are hanging in two shows (Contour and NW Arts Center) and I just couldn't decide which one to not bring.
They fit all perfectly on the stage, in fact I think I will bring six next time since two can lean on the outer edge and four in the back.
As what happened last Spiritus - the audience picked 3 out of the four cards on display from the Tarot of the Pomegranate deck we use.
This time, I brought my two black veils and thought "Oh, I hope someone picks the Moon card for me to dance because it's perfect with the black veils!"
Wouldn't you know? Someone picked the Moon card when it was my turn to dance and I got to do my double black veil dance ~ Perfect!
I need to practice it anyway for our video shoot at Neighbours this coming Tuesday.
All the cards picked for the evening were The Hierophant, Death, The Moon and Empress.
Another "kwinky-dink" during rehearsal yesterday morning we went through Belly Tarot and Kendra and I both picked the Death card to read, and I read it on the cards she has printed out from a book and found the interpretation to be very negative - basically it said "Death means someone you love will die"..!?! Yeah, WTF? It does not mean this.
So of course, when it was my turn to read and Kendra to dance at Spiritus Faye picked the Death card and I did not read it but just told my interpretation. Also, this card was perfect for Faye for some things she is going through at this time.
While I was giving my presentation of the Death card the few Tarot readers in the audience I recognized nodded in approval for what I was saying. Of course, I felt like I was fumbling for words and not as lucid as I could be since here I am talking in front of a large audience. But Xtina assured me what I said was great and right on ` :)
Faye also nodded in agreement which makes me happy, wow!
Also, Sage was in the audience - Sage who is my holy fool and has posed for the Fool card which is underway at this time - he will be our Metaphysical Magician at the next Spiritus! Wooop!
Spiritus is going towards a dark carnie metaphysical twist - that's where we'd like to go.

I finally sat down and counted how many paintings I have completed in the Tarot of the Pomegranate - 30! I have 48 more to go, most of them being minor arcana which are only 1.8 x 2.8 ft. .. I have completed 4 and have 36 to go.
Of the Court cards I have completed 8 and have 8 more to go.
I am almost done with the Major Arcana which is 5.3 ft. x 3ft.,...I have completed 18 out of 22 of the Major, very soon to be 19.
I started painting on the Magician again the other night it's exciting to see a painting that has taken 3 years to finally be nearing the finish line. The next morning after painting on Magician (for the first time in months) I got a call from a curator for a hot gallery in Port Townsend, wanting my work to be in a show about archetypes next year. I'm thrilled! She saw my work at Art Not Terminal's Tarot show in May this year.
Of course she was most impressed with the Death painting - what is it with Death that so speaks to people? Of all my paintings Death has sold the most out of prints, has had the most offers to buy and has recieved the most compliments. None of the people, by the way, are "goths" that are into this painting as you would think, nope just your regular art appreciating crowd.
In Belly Tarot when it's not a "planned" tarot reading performance, I have picked "Death" to dance to - and have in fact performed "Death" 3 times in the past year.
Our next Belly Tarot (where the audience picks the card) will be at the Rendezvous again for "Spiritus" July 27th.
This time I am dancing to two Tarot cards. The last performance an audience member picked "The Empress " for me, I was so glad!
The reading was Hierophant, Empress and Temperance... Did the spirits of "Spiritus" influence the cards here?
Kendra is now reading out the interpretation for the card once it is picked, we are using the interpretations I wrote that are on my website. So for me, this Belly Tarot has become something quite extraordinary and powerful artistically - after all, am I not fusing my love of Dance and Art and Tarot all together here? And now my writing...well, I can say life is good but I fucking worked for it :)
Most of all there's a lot of power in these shows at Spiritus...more than we know

The Empress is the<br>archetype of the Mother. She creates and<br>nurtures life. She represents the abundance of<br>Mother Earth. The Empress is capable of using<br>nature in a productive way. She espouses art<br>for art's sake. Her planet is Venus, and she<br>embodies love of beauty and a strong value<br>system. Here is also found initial sensation.<br>This is the first really physical experience of<br>the world that The Fool has entered. The<br>Empress has a rich understanding of the world<br>based on her five senses. In a reading, The<br>Empress represents pregnancy, actual or<br>metaphorical. She indicates an act of creation<br>and a sensual experience of beauty.

The weird thing is, I have all my Tarot paintings on show at Fenix or Glos right now, all except the Empress...! She is hanging in my hallway, 6x4 and too big for my car.... It is the only Tarot painting I painted this size, the rest of the Major arcana are around 5x3.

What is your experience with Tarot readings?

Tell me about your experience in receiving a reading, and/or if you are a reader how you feel about reading and the service you are giving people. Describe in detail to me your experiences! I want to post quotes on my website from readers and clients alike.
For instance, how do you compare a Tarot reader to a psychiatrist? A spiritual counselor?
How deep do your readings go and how long does it stay with you?
Personally I feel a Tarot reader is like a Shaman, a seer and a counselor all in one..

I have discovered in my journey of learning webdesign on my own, that I can "Save to Web" my images and thus compress them so now it is much easier to look at my site, it loads up faster and for those of you on dial - up, let me know if it is less excruciating to load up my pages. I really want to make my site accessible to everyone.
I have added new buttons on all the main pages for my Bazaar, Tarot readings and Tarot decks.
If you will please check out my site and let me know if it works faster for you etc. and if you are a web master please give me any hints or feedback! Thank you!!

Tarot readings by the creator of Tarot of the Pomegranate....

Is this a novel idea? I have just created a page on my site for Tarot reading via email and pay by Paypal, not so odd just the very novelty of Tarot readings by the creator of the Tarot deck (of course I will be using a full deck when I do the readings).
I know if Lady Frieda Harris were alive today and offering Tarot readings I would be first in line!
So far I offer two readings, Celtic cross and Relationship spread - but will be adding more probably later.
I did a personal reading for a client the other day (one on one, not through my website) and it was the most intense reading I have ever experienced, it blew both our minds actually.
I told my professional Tarot reader friend about it and she was astonished too at the cards that had come up..how it jibed exactly with the situation.
It still haunts me - what a learning experience! And my client called me out of the blue, (I hadn't even loaded this "idea"up on my site yet) I had read her cards over a year ago and now that I am finally admitting I am a Tarot reader and a damn fine one at that, and will be pursuing the realm of Tarot reading professionally, I am contacted and experience the most intense reading ever!!! If this is not a sign that I am thinking in the right direction then I don't know what is...
I was reminded here that the Tarot is indeed very real and powerful...no, it is a CHANNEL for that which is very real and powerful to communicate to us... a channel for our all knowing souls? Our Higher Selves? Our Guardian angels? God/dess? Whatever it is that watches over us as we plow through this physical existence, THAT is what it is.
Scared yet?
Go on... try a reading! ;)
I DARE YOU TO VENTURE TO THE OTHER SIDE WITH ME

The Magician

The Magician is now officially finished!!!! Three years of working on this painting. I have changed the face numerous times, and that has been the most difficult part, though painting faces is my strong point it is definitely the most challenging.
Especially painting one's own face. Painting others is a snap for some reason, and I have so many models to work with now it seems I don't have enough cards in the deck left to fill them all! ;)

Look forward to a picture of the Magician to be posted here later...

Yowza! This past summer, some fine ladies from Elle Empire (www.elleempire.com) in NYC came to Seattle to interview Hands of Kali and film one of our performances, for their documentary film "Crazed: The Bellydance." We just got the goods back today and, sweet mother, this video is BEAUTIFUL. Go watch it RIGHT NOW. Please give it your "greenlight" vote so it can be broadcast on regular ol' TV and share the link with your friends. Thank you! Hugs and kisses to all!

Eris Tarot deck
Eris and Pluto in Tarot and on the Tree of Life

Copyright (c) 2006 by Klaudio Zic, all rights reserved. http://www.lulu.com/astrology

Eris and Pluto

Eris and Pluto are the largest dwarf planets. It has been known for quite a long time in scientific circles that Pluto is not a planet. Now it's official. Our zodiac is confined to 24 IAU constellations and the present set of ascendants is only 16 in number. How can scientific astrology redefine planetary mind, magick and Tarot?

Giant Transneptunian Objects

1992 was a historical year for astronomy and astrology since the first transneptunian discovery happened in that year. 1992 QB1 expanded our horoscopes along with the first centaurs Chiron, Pholus, Nessus and our magickal patron Asbolus. As giant transneptunian objects kept on increasing in size, number and importance, we proposed an universal tarot that would encompass the zodiacal constellations, precessed ascendant, Earth coorbitals, Apoheles, centaur objects, cubewano, plutino, SDO, Sedna and dwarf planets Pluto and Eris. The project was partially published in the form of the slightly experimental "Matrix Tarot Deck" as well as in the form of several book covers.

Tarot and the Tree of Life

Our recent effort deals with the "magickal wallpapers" that form another database for the possible universal Tarot deck. Besides Eris the new tarot cards would show Pluto, Charon, Orcus, Ceres, Varuna, Sedna, Quaoar, Ixion and objects of interest. In our recent "Dwarf Planets on the Tree of Life" publication and USENET article we propose some upgrade solutions for Eris on the Tree of Life. The position would of course tend to affect any Tarot attributions as associated with the Tree of Life.

The reader and Tarot designer is invited to join our forum http://www.lulu.com/astrology
{ http://tribes.tribe.net/eris_astrology } as well as Google groups Eris and Dwarf_Planets.

The Fool painting is now underway, I am painting in the background as of yet, water and crashing waves on a sandy beach with an abandoned boat... the same background as in my Realm of the Soul trip tych from 1998..
Somehow it's all connected, or it's all coming together and starting to make sense.
After the Fool I have the Chariot and the Hanged Man and then I am finished with the Major Arcana!
I was given an idea today on the Hanged Man, someone being strangled by an umbilical chord, maybe a Caul about the head, a dangerous perilous birth, a chosen one into a new realm.
I already shot reference photos for this painting about five years ago with my old boyfriend Bob who modeled in Lovers, Hierophant, Death, Devil... The Hanged man was to have two heads, a male and a female but not literally, the head was to be painted moving in motion and the one head becomes a male and female head on each side as a result.. mmmm all good ideas, and somehow they will mesh and make sense.
Of course, as is fitting, while I near the end of my journey of the Major arcana all of life's difficulties come to smack me upside the head, all the lessons I never learn and repeat over and over, all the demons come back more powerful than ever, like Anne Boleyn I feel like I am surrounded by enemies all round.

The Gift of the Four Leaf Clovers...

My opening this Saturday the 9th was extraordinary for me, mostly because my sisters and I of Hands of Kali performed Belly Tarot with my real Tarot paintings in the background... this was an amazing experience for me as the artist and to see my Tarot being utilized, written interpretations and all! Wow, is it really happening?
(Also I feel I 've come full circle with my tarot.. I've come to some kind of milestone, since it is 3 years to the day that I had my first show with Tarot of the Pomegranate at Mr. Spots Chaihouse, and my opening was with Delilah and the Visionary Dancers. I'd opend the circle to the four directions, the four suits of the Tarot and we had four dancers for each element - Water, Fire, Air and Earth. Delilah was Earth of course, and did her Egyptian Hathor dance (the same dance as at Egyptian moonday of April 2005 when Poul first took my photos of our performance!) Is that not magickal ritual in itself..?
My second show at Mr. Spots the same year, I had Rene Aceves doing Tarot readings and my friend from high school Karyn came to my opening and asked the cards if she was going to get pregnant, her and her husband had been trying for a long time. Lo and behold she gets the Empress card! The Empress is the only pregnant woman in my tarot deck, and is traditionally so in most decks. Well, now today Karyn has a two year old daughter!)
My opening now seemed to have a most intrigued and willing audience which only got bigger as the night progressed. We performed two sets and by the second set it was standing room only.
My parents actually showed up for my opening (gasp!) This was the first time they've seen me perform since 1993 when I was with Visionary Dancers! OMG! This is the first opening my Dad has come to since 1998 and my BFA show at Cornish, and the second for my mother since that time (she did come to my first opening also 3 years ago at this spot).
I think it's great they came to one of my shows and got to see me not only perform but see my work hanging on the wall, and performing to my work via the Tarot deck we use for Belly Tarot. So in a way we got to kill two birds with one stone here.. I don't expect them to come to anymore events now until my whole Tarot is finished and ensconsced in a Tarot cathedral somewhere... ;)
I opened the evening on both sets, introducing myself with my full name as the artist and as a member of the luscious group of Hands of Kali. Everyone looked so beautiful like they'd just stepped out of a Tarot deck or something..! :) Tarot archetypes come to life. The Tarot world opening up, the veil being pulled away through dance.
The first to come foreward and pull a card was my friend Miyou's 8 year old girl, Ruth! She picked the Hermit, which was also hanging on the wall. An auspicious symbol indeed. I read out my interpretation of the Hermit then Kendra did the honors and performed. Then it was my turn to perform, and Poul (who was videotaping ) picked a card for me, it was Justice! Interestingly enough we had been discussing my Justice painting the night before, and I'd said how I didn't really like it and Poul insisted it was perfect and one of his favourite, he helped me see that it is a good painting again. So it was with honor I got to dance it for him, and much more so because Justice holds a sword - I got to dance with my sword I'd brought just in case it was needed. I recall seeing my parents in the audience at this point and gawking. I realized they probably didn't even know I danced with sword! ;)
Well then it was Maureen's turn and she got The Lovers, this is so Maureen's card! This is the card she dances to when we do a pre-choreographed belly tarot performance, she has a beautiful red veil choreography and she got to shine with it that night! Yay!
Xtina got the Moon card (another painting hanging on the wall, next to Hermit) and danced with my Moon platter I'd painted like the face in the painting. This is Xtina's first Belly Tarot performance btw! She rocked!
We ended with tribal and then let the band for the night "Cause & effect" play for about 40 minutes. Our second set Kendra danced to the High Priestess, yay! She is my favourite painting of all. Then it was my turn, the Devil! I was psyched, I got to put on a red veil over my head and grab the chains and dance to one of my favourite songs on the Belly Tarot disk. The next card chosen was "Death" picked by Miyou, who afterward asked me if this was a bad card or what? For someone who is just about to get married to the love of her life, well it can only mean the good aspect of Death "Change and Transformation" and letting go of the old to let in the new. It can also mean the most negative but as a Tarot reader I like to focus on the most positive aspects. Tarot is not written in stone, our destiny is always changing according to our will. Does one will themselves the best in life, the most easiest path? usually not... speaking for myself and my own demons that like to upbraid my life just as it's going well... anyway,
the last card chosen for the night was .... ouch, I forgot! I guess it wasn't important..;)
The most touching moment of the eveing though earned the title of this entry..
The day before the opening I went to mr, Spots and hung up two more paintings, since Poul was at work I had to do it by myself, but of course I didn't have to look far to ask for some help holding the canvas while I wired it up. A regular patron, Sheldon, helped me and even ran home to his apartment to get me some string in case I needed that! he was very intrigued by my work, and we discussed the symbology, including the Hebrew symbols Poul painted in, for some time. When I left he was still staring at my work, and this in inself is a compliment (on average most people only look at a painting for 4 seconds) he was definitley passing the 4 second mark on each of my paintings.
When I arrived to my opening he was sitting there with his friend and he said to me that my art had opened up a whole new vista for him, that he was reading about Tarot and the Kabbalah all evening long on the internet. Then he said " I have something for you" and he handed me a small lite green notebook, on very earthy looking paper and he said that he had collected 52 four leaf clovers and put one on each page in the notebook!
I opened it up and couldn't believe what I saw - four leaf clovers! I thought those were supposed to be so rare..? I remember as a kid rifling through the rare clover patches on the playground at elementary school trying to find a four leaf clover and not succeeding. Then one girl saying she found one but one of the leaves had fallen off as she held it out broken in her hand for all of us to see, but we all knew she'd plucked it off another clover. Then someone saying they'd pay their allowance money (those lucky enough to have an allowance me not included) to have one. That's how desperate we were to find a four leaf clover!
Now here I am 30 years later and I have a book full of four leaf clovers, given to me by an almost complete stranger. The best part is, he never asked for my number! :D He actually just respects my work, got something out of it, and in return felt he must give me something back. How beautiful is that?! I'm in awe of all the adventures my Tarot of the Pomegranate has taken me..and I am reminded it is the little things that mean the most, are the things I will remember.
Things I would like to remember to overcome: Not to be so selfish, not to be vengeful, not to hate, not to listen to the demons..
Things I would like to learn: How to love, how to forgive and to give, how to be unconditional and free.

I spent all weekend updating my site instead of at the beach as planned! It's so frickin' hot out my god. Luckily my house is in the woods so we sat in the shade in the backyard. We prepped two canvases also this weekend outside, the three layers of gesso dried in no time, it's 90 degrees in the shade what do you expect?! Poul is going to start the "Tree of Life" so he is going to paint that on one of my major arcana sized canvases. But we found it to be too frickin' hot to paint this weekend. The "Tree of Life" will be on the back of the deck. I am going to get on it with redesigning my "Tarot deck in progress", that is, after I send in my Alumni show submission for Cornish that I just got in the mail - has to be in by the 31st. I hope they will accept a disk with my images on it, and not accept only fucking slides as they request! Slides are just outdated and a pain in the ass. Why do visual artists, "Painters" to be exact, have to suffer with getting slides together while "digital artists" can get away with submitting a disk of jpegs..? Feels like the art world is still stuck in the past. There are high res digital camera's and computers now - we don't need f'n slides and slide projectors so there!!
That is my rant for the day, besides the fact I taught a class in West Seattle this morning, had to drive down from Edmonds in a non-air conditioned car to enter a non-air conditioned school and try to keep awake as my little art students scribbled away.
Now I'm sitting in my satin slip in the shady loft tyring to recover... ahhh theres' something to be said about brick, it's nice an cool...
Anyway, I am excited about my site - especially the opening page where I created my first gif animation! (with help of course) check it out now!!! www.tarotofthepomegranate.com :)
I can't wait to animate some more stuff. I am gradually learning web creating, this is a great tool and addictive - hence sitting on the computer all weekend instead of hanging out at the water's edge (which is where I'd like to be right now)......

SPIRITUS & BELLY TAROT

Spiritus was lastnight (July 20th) and Hands of Kali performed. Maureen and I both danced to two tarot cards. The first card picked by an audience member was "The Emperor", Kendra read out my interpretation as I took to my new sword, It was my chance to use it! I did my first solo sword dance ever, it felt fantastic. I believe Richard who was sitting in the front row took some photos ( I ran into him later at Confessional at the Vogue and was introduced for the first time!) Faye actually started to speak to him during the show about his spirit guides etc... I'm still waiting for Faye to speak to me, sometimes I feel like she will for I feel this weird lightness about my head, like my spirit guides are coming through.
The second card I danced to was the Chariot. I danced with the bronze tray this time, and walked off the stage to interact more with the audience who seem politely stunned by the spectacle but quite open, you've got to be if you are into this event in the first place, and expect the unexpected.
I love these Belly Tarot dances - they are magickal, spontaneous and surreal! Next time I will put some cards out about my Tarot deck, since it is the deck being used in Belly Tarot. Kendra is gracious enough to let the audience know this fact. A bellydancer and a painter and Tarotist..?! No wonder the men are all frightened and only women come forward to pick the cards.... :P
I even managed to paint later that evening (after Confessional) on Magician, and the pomegranate the monkey is eating has transformed into a human heart... Don't take these cards "literally" - these cards are symbolic and whatever that means to you is how it is. There's something about the Monkey ( I am born in the year of the Monkey) Monkeys are cute but at the same time scary - they can become vicious in an instant, unexpectedly.
I know personally because I was bit by a monkey in Indonesia, it was playing with my hair all cute and when I pulled my hair away it bit my finger, even breaking the skin. Luckily I didn't get any weird crazy monkey disease... probably the Malaria pills I was popping at the time fended it off ;)
Oh, now Spiritus has moved to the second Thursday of every month. I feel the Spirit is with us, or spirit(s).. and each time inbetween sets I feel more in tune, more aware.. it is helping me too. I am not just a performer there, I have been to every event since it first began in April, there is more going on here on a personal level if I want to admit it or not so it is..
So MOTE IT BE

Tarot Art Not Terminal show runs May 6- June 1st (Come check out my Tarot paintings!)

The opening on the 6th was great! There were six Tarot readers set up within the gallery, and all the Tarot work was beautifully lit.
I've never seen my paintings so well lit - esp. impressed with how the warmth comes out of the Devil painting!
It is great to see Judgement hanging for the first time - and to see it from a long distance, I'm pleased with the results, esp. since this painting took almost three years to complete!
I have seven Major Arcana paintings up (5ft. x 2ft.) If you haven't seen my work in real life yet here is your chance to see them, and actually well lit up for the first time! :D

The Magician and Judgement

Spent four days painting the Magician this weekend, and listening to Dune "Battle of Corrin" on audiotape (that's 17.5 hours long) as I painted! I have been working on The Magician for three years, same as Judgement (which I just finished two weeks ago)
It's an unbelievable relief and release to be finishing these paintings now - I'm ready for the Fool next.
After these three paintings I have The Fool, The Hanged Man and The Chariot to complete and VOILA the Major Arcana is finished!!
Yeah, just like that...eight years later.. But as they say it is the journey that is the most important not the end goal, and I have learned this to be quite true. If I had not ever chosen to create this Tarot project I would never have met certain key people in my life, or experienced the both frightful and wonderful things I have - or earned the inner growth I have not been able to avoid as a result of this sort of creative and spiritual exploration..
yet - I have only scratched the surface of what the Tarot is, sometimes I feel like I am this empty vessel channeling forces I don't understand or don't have the capability to even try - if I get even a quarter of what I see in my mind expressed on canvas I've done something exceptional.

I am currently working on the Emperor! It is to be in the Winter Solstice Feast this year as part of the Tarot meditation walk... apparently all the Tarot paintings have been found through various artists except for Emperor..
It's my job to finish this guy in two days...! I'm almost there...
Anything is worth getting into the Winter solstice feast - an amazing event (put on by the Fremont Arts council) that you can only get tickets for if you "participate" somehow in creating the event in my case by being part of the an art installation.
This is how I got in several years ago when I showed all the major arcana I had finished as part of a dance ritual space.
Painting the Tarot has been the key to opening many interesting doors! And..it's only the beginning :D
