Hello group :) I need some opinions..
I'm scheduled to begin work on my very first tattoo on the 28th of this month. I am getting the 7 chakra symbols running the length of my spine and have always pictured them in all color with no black lines, but am looking for others opinions. I have minimal tattoo experience and what I picture in my head is awesome, but I'm wondering if I'd be better served to do a grey outline, or go black and have them filled in their colors. Our tattooer is a black and grey kinda guy and did not at all seem thrilled at the all-color, absolutely no black concept. I know it'll look amazing either way (he's an absolutely amazing artist) but I guess I'm just looking for some opinions from people who know more than I do. I've been searching everywhere online and am having a real hard time finding pics of all one color tattoos like I had envisioned for mine. Here's a link to the chakra symbols I am getting, for reference..

Re: I need an opinion or two
Mon, February 16, 2009 - 7:38 PMPersonally? I'm usually not crazy about tattoos without outline. I see it alot, usually when people want to go for a 'painted'/'watercolor' effect. Nine out of ten times I think that it would just look better defined with outlines.
With that out of the way, your piece *might* look cool without outlines. If nothing else, you can always do it without the outlining and then add it in later if you come to the conclusion that it will strengthen the piece. -

Tue, February 17, 2009 - 4:12 AMI, personally, do not like the color book look. Now, old school and new school NEED that line for the type of art it is...

Re: I need an opinion or two
Tue, February 17, 2009 - 4:09 AMWhat you can do is the Chakras in color and a gray wash around / under them. It gives them a raised, shadowed look if done correctly. Ask the tattooist to gray line or blood line it in. -

Re: I need an opinion or two
Wed, February 18, 2009 - 8:27 AMI think colors are fine...and I like non-outlined look for new school looking tattoos...my concern would be that you'd lose detail over time if you didn't use some contrasting element or outline (even if only in a darker color than the symbols rather than black). -

Thu, February 19, 2009 - 1:25 PMDo not let the artist talk you into black lining if you don't want it!
My very first tattoo has some tribal around it. I'm a color fan too and I wanted the tribal to be purple rather than the standard black. During the tattoo the artist asked me 'How bout I just outline it in black? It will make the purple stand out more.' And I said sure whatever. I really wish I hadn't. I think it would have looked cooler with just the purple :(
You can always add black or grey shading later. You can't go back and get black colored over.
My next tattoo is comming up next month, I will not be getting black outlines, I may get some watered down grey work in parts tho. I like that look better. When I shopped for my artist, I specifically looked and asked for someone that did great color work. I would be nervous going to someone who doesn't like working in color. But if he's a great artist and is willing to give you what you want, his speciality in blacks/greys may not be an issue. -

Thu, February 19, 2009 - 2:10 PM"You can't go back and get black colored over. " ~~ Yes you can.~~
"I may get some watered down grey work in parts tho." ~~ Like I said, a wash. When using black it's called grey wash." -

Re: I need an opinion or two
Thu, February 19, 2009 - 3:27 PMYou can get black colored over? Wow, I didn't know that, I thought there were certain colors that you were limited on what you could get done over them and figured since black was the darkest it would be the worst to color over.
Regarding your web search for 'blackless' designs, this guy does excellent color only tats(among other styles). Caution, its image intensive so I hope you don't have dial up...:

And holy crap, I actually found one of a gal with the chakras going up her back with NO black in his galleries....

So this would be a good one to look at to see if you think it would be better on you with black. I hope you don't find it deflating to see your idea on someone elses skin(if your like me at least), but it is quite a unique version that could be easily varied so that you stay original.
