Dancing with a new tattoo????

topic posted Sun, July 20, 2008 - 10:45 PM by  Ashley
I have a small tattoo I got recently and am going to get another larger one this week. I work as a fitness instructor (yoga and dance) and am a professional belly dancer and polynesian dancer as well.

Any advice on after care? I plan to scale down the first week...but I'm curious to see what the veterans' opinions are. I can only imagine that sweat negatively effects the healing process. What about stretching? This one will be on the upper back, but the next one will be on the abdomen so I'm concerned about twisting.

Thoughts, advice, personal experiences???

  • Good question, I've been pondering it myself as mine may still be in healing stages at the next 'dancey thing'.

I guess as long as you keep it moisturized so no scabs crack or anything you'll probably be okay. I'd lay off the triangle series for awhile tho ;)
    • As a fitness & BD instructor with tatts on my back, shoulders, torso, hips, rib cage & wrists, the thing that bothers me most about the healing process is selecting clothes. My shoulder tatts did not bother me at all with any clothing except my bra staps (do racer back). My torso did not bother me during twisting, but waist bands bothered me for the hips & the lower torso tatts. Make sure you wear elastc free clothes for the abdomen tatt. No jeans for sure. Relaxed skirts & yoga pants without binding waists. Sweat did not ruin the tatts either. Actually nothing I did ruined the artwork. As Lori said, keep moisturizing several times a day, make sure you wear sunscreen & keep your fresh tatts out of the sun.
  • I danced with a new large foot tattoo. It was tough and I couldn't do everything but it only bothered me a few days.
    • For aftercare product dont know if its available in the US but if it is use Bepanthen. Its actually a diaper rash ointment. Its clear helps with the itch and depending on your healing u will get either no or paper thin scabs which dont crack like a white cream would.

On the itchies too, try patting next to the itchy area.

I have a full belly tattoo, see my profile pic. And I just wore soft hipster pants loose tshirts and tried to stay cool. Sweat does make it itchier so natural fabrics are a godsend. I am a slow healer and mine was 100% healed in about 10 days
